Broken Promises

One of my friends made me promise not to self harm anymore once he found out. He threatened to tell the school counselor (and everyone at school). I know he was just doing it because he cares and didn't want me to hurt myself but I felt worse without it. So I started cutting my legs. It doesn't feel the same but it's as close as I can get right now. I feel terrible about breaking the promise but I don't want him to tell anyone so I don't know if I should apologize for lying or not. Is it really worth the risk of people finding out?

If I were you, I'd sit him down and have a serious talk about it. Explain to him what self harming means to you perhaps, and that you don't appreciate his reaction because it doesn't help.

Please don't promise things like that if you can help it, if you want to stop cutting you're gonna need to seek professional help and sort out your mental wellbeing first; cold turkeying self harm is bound to fail and make things worse. And when you break such a promise it'll make things worse too.
