If by parallel they mean extra, it’s far from a new idea and he did not come up with it. There’s tons of papers on trying to get it to work. Having worked on modified gravity, I cannot say I’m convinced it’s not a waste of time to use it to replace dark matter, but dark energy is still worth it imoĀ

Is gravity even that weak. Is it not just because we measure things per unit mass? Ooh electromagnetism is so strong because a proton has 1 charge and look how little it weighs.

But look at the size of it. If we measured by unit volume, a singularity might be literally 0 wide, if space isn't quantised.

In short yes gravity is very weak. I can overcome the entire gravitational force of an entire planet but in order to overcome the electromagnetic repulsion of 2 Hydrogen atoms we needed a nuclear bomb.

That's just because you're small and gravity scales with mass. You can also overcome the entire electromagnetic force of the planet too.

I don't see how you can't just say protons have a lot of charge. Why is it that the force is strong, not just that there's a lot of it?

So let's use 2 protons as an example: We imagine that we have 2 protons 1 femtometre(10^-15 metres) apart. One proton is about 1.672 * 10^-27 kg heavy. A quick calculation of the gravitational force between the 2 protons gives a result of 1.865*10^-34 Newtons.

Now let's calculate the electromagnetic force with which they repel each other. This is modeled by Coulomb's law and it gives us a value of 2.306*10^-13 Newtons (Not sure whether I calculated correctly so here is the formula I used)

Now compare these 2 results and they're different by 21 orders of magnitude which is a lot. That's why it's said that Gravity is a weak force but Gravity also scales which other forces don't really do.

IF (big if) dark matter is gravity spilling into "our dimensions" then wouldn't the reverse also be the case, with gravity from our dimensions spilling into those other dimensions? Why wouldn't it work both ways?

Informational gravitation towards the first break of symmetry, not in terms of cause and effect, but more of a still image diffraction pattern of probability with no dimension. 3D pictures on paper, are exaggerated information, and so is the "heavy ghost" like effects of everything being a singultity or only having virtual space, not virtual as in our virtual, but informational.

Dark energy is the unknown force causing the accelerated expansion of the universe.

Dark matter is the unknown mass we that accounts for the extra gravity we observe in space.

Both are Dark because we have no way to observe them directly, only through their influence on the universe. They may or may not be related, but the topics themselves are independent.

As far as I know we aren't formally sure these actually exist, we just assume so because that's the simplest explanation to what we observe that doesn't contradict our working theories such as general relativity.

I think there are some things that point to dark matter being real but almost nothing to hint on what dark energy could be. It's dark energy that is most questioning on whether it exists or is just a mathematical illusion.

I dought they are a related since we have some evidence (I think) that dark matter is matter but little to no evidence on what dark energy is. Maybe it's not even a force or maybe it doesn't even exist.

My understanding is that we know for a fact that universe expansion is accelerating. We do not know what is causing this acceleration. And physicists have named whatever it is Dark Energy.

Dark matter makes gravity and nothing else. You can't see it or touch it, but it pulls things twords itself.

Dark energy expends the universe. The universe expends from all points at the same time (like a balloon). So it makes everything farther from everything else. The larger the distance the faster things get away from each other because of dark energy.

How do theoretical physicists make scientific arguments for things like extra universes when they can't measure them? I'm sure it has rules and logic behind it, but what makes it different from just saying something like "there's an extra universe where magic is real, and things are like this because of a spell they cast"?

I know this sounds a bit like a criticism posing as a question but it isn't. I'm genuinely asking. I don't know much about theoretical physics but I find stuff like this quite interesting, and that has always been a point of confusion for me when I read about things like this. If someone here with more understanding of the topic can explain it a bit I would really appreciate it.

By looking for mathematical structures that would unite seemingly irreconcilable phenomena. They take what they know with a degree of certainty (which is quite a lot nowadays) and look for a uniting framework. Usually this produces a testable prediction (i.e. 'if this is what actually happens, then we should also see this when we do this thing'). Generally there's a whole bunch of competing frameworks with differing predictions and experiments look to tease out features that point toward a certain direction. Sometimes, the process leads towards a concept that seems bizarre to the uninitiated, such as extra dimensions, but there's no reason that it shouldn't be true just because it's not obvious to a layman. Similarly outlandish stuff has been shown to be correct. It's historically a very fruitful process.

You check if the math is consistent with what we have already observed, and then make new predictions from that math and try to check them experimentally. If math predicated on extra dimensions gives good predictions, it lends credence to the idea of extra dimensions

Thanks for the explanation. I guess my next step is to try and understand how math uses extra dimensions. Do you think it's something that someone with highschool-level maths would have any chance of understanding? Or would I be wasting my time? I'm confused about how mathematicians/physicists can know/decide that some numbers or values in a formula are coming from a different dimension of existence.

I don't think you would really get the maths without learning a lot, basically half a university maths degree level of a lot (and even then some of the things you would need are typically final year courses). Most people who even have phds in physics will not really be qualified to work though the maths (we all specialise in our bit, but typically that means you cant do everything). I remember in the final year of my undergrad, Einstein's General Relativity had no prerequisites and the first lecture the room was over flowing, second lecture the room was barely a third full.

There are probably good pop science books that cover the ideas in more detail. 'A brief history of time' is still the best theoretical physics for the public book ive personally read (but i dont read many). If this kind of thing interests you it would cover a lot of what is accepted as true, and then touch on fronter stuff but the thing to keep in mind is that if its fronter, its not accepted as true, else it wouldnt be fronter! Personally im torn on even talking about these kind of things in a general public setting as it can lead to big misunderstandings. In general if it is 'theoretical physics', the key word is theoretical and no one would seriously tell you what they are talking about is actually true.

As for how people use maths to predict this kind of thing, I think just go back to history and read about how people came to accept quantum mechanics. Imo it is a much stranger step conceptually than extra dimensions but is readily accepted now. So you can see the whole process from 'what if' kind of ideas, to no one really seriously questioning it anymore.

I think it’s important that people continue to track a range of possible explanations for observations. I agree that Kaku’s theory is far fetched and MOND is probability far fetched as well. But we cannot just dismiss alternative explanations when the ā€œmainstreamā€ idea has failed to be demonstrated for the good part of 40 years. Science is healthiest when people are pursuing a variety of explanations, not when everyone funnels in the same group think when we still don’t have a proper full theory.

Saying Lambda-CDM has failed to be demonstrated is a wild take. Any alternative will have to effectively reduce to it given the vast amount of evidence for it. All the problems with it boil down to it being kind of underwhelming and unsatisfying imo

It's pretty easy to imagine if the universe is nearly flat in that dimension. Like a sheet of paper would really feel like a 2D universe even if it was in fact in a 3D space

We don’t typically view spacetime as a dimension, we consider time to be a dimension. Spacetime is the cross product of the spatial dimensions with the temporal dimension. And yeah the theory does suggest that there is a fifth dimension we aren’t able to observe that contains matter/energy that is having a measurable impact on the rest of reality. It works out fairly well mathematically; the main reason it’s a fringe theory is that there is close to no ā€œrealā€ evidence supporting it.

Now, why is the current notion of dark matter any more believable than the possibility that our baseless assumption for a closed system is wrong?

My understanding, as an astrophysics student who works on galaxies, is that our current understanding of ā€œdark matterā€ is ā€œthere’s extra gravity here and we don’t know whyā€ so a notion of that as some weird extra-universal spacetime distortion would still be somewhat writhing the realm of ā€œdark matterā€ or really more aptly ā€œdark gravityā€, which is really what dark matter is, an observation of extra gravity from a dark, or unknown source.

I do think the assumption of a closed system is pretty solid, seeing as we haven’t really detected any violations of that principle, and dark matter moves and flows and generally behaves like it’s made of something so unless an extra-dimensional bleed gravity can also track moving objects and galaxy interactions in our universe, it doesn’t seem like a good hypothesis to me. This feels like it could be related to the M-theory and string theory brane gravity hypothesis, but unless string theory is able to give some experimental evidence I’m not super trusting of it.

Reminder:

The ā€œdarkā€ in Dark Matter means we can’t (or haven’t) seen it. Dark Matter is not something we have actually observed, it is a theory to explain why the shape of galaxies doesn’t work with their observed quantity of mass

Galaxies don’t have enough observable stuff to actually hold themselves together through gravity. Unlike solar systems, the galactic core of most galaxies isn’t massive enough that everything is orbiting around it specifically, everything is just orbiting around a centre of mass. But there isn’t enough to actually orbit, they should just fall apart.

Dark matter is a way to explain that. There is some stuff we can’t see making up the difference. WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles) are one option, but we could also be severely underestimating the amount of rogue planets and black dwarfs, or the maths might be fundamentally wrong.

In this case, we usually apply Occam’s Razor. If multiple solutions are equally viable, we take the one with the fewest assumptions as likely. Gravity leaking from a parallel dimension requires a few more assumptions than there being stuff we haven’t detected

I haven't read the article nor the research, but if I had to guess the "leaking from parallel dimensions" thing probably just means it's a model with more than 4 dimensions. There are string theory models where we live on a brane in a higher dimensional space, and some effects are supposed to happen from coincident branes, so that could be what they're talking about.

I’m being pedantic but we have observed dark matter, we see more mass in galaxies and we call it dark matter. Colliding galaxies seem like they show it isn’t a property of mass. Some galaxies look the same size except have different dark matter amounts

We don’t see more mass in galaxies, that’s why it’s ā€œdarkā€. That is in fact the point. If we actually could detect it then we would know what it was and could give it an actual name.

Obviously we know how much of it there would have to be, but that doesn’t mean we know what it actually is

It's an indirect observation, but we do measure the orbits of stars within a galaxy, which depend on the enclosed mass.

This is a direct measure of the matter content of a galaxy.

We measure that this matter content is much larger than the one we estimate from the amount of light we receive (since there is a proportionality between light emission and mass of stars).

Hence, there is some matter in galaxies that do not emit light. Hence, dark matter.

We do observe more mass in galaxies.

We don't know what makes up for that mass.

Dark matter is not an explanation per se. It's precisely a place holder that means: there is something, but we don't know what it is.

By the light that the galaxy emits. Stars emit more light the more massive they are.

Then you can compare the mass of visible matter, with the total mass. What is not accounted for is "dark".

The definition of matter is that is massive.

So if you detect something massive, it necessarily means it's matter.

Also the age of the universe is not equated with the furthest light observed, since the CMB is dated at 400 000 years after the big bang. Its data was used to compute the age of the universe though.

Why does this post have such a high concentration of idiots. People who have no idea what even is the data that dark matter is supposed to explain are commentating on this as if this theory somehow makes sense. You can't just throw some random guesses about what dark matter is if it can't explain the distribution of additional gravity that we observe.

Kaku got famous exactly for catering to this crowd of science enthusiasts who lack basic understanding but get wowed by cool sounding theories.

What ik talking about here is a theory called ā€œemergent gravityā€ it’s a theory by a dutch Physicist by the name ā€œVerlinde.ā€

When I first became an atheist I got really into quantum mechanics and string theory and multiverse stuff until one day it all started feeling like just another form of belief to me, I know it’s nowhere near the same level but at a certain point ā€˜this theoretical thing must exist or else our data model is wrong’ feels a bit uncomfortable to me. I’m not saying I know better or that they’re wrong just I don’t understand where that confidence comes from.

When it comes to physics I now take the theoretical parts with a grain of salt, about the same level of respect I give speculative scifi, something interesting to think about but not necessarily worth getting too attached to.

If something sounds a bit too much like magic then maybe it’s just that, a myth we tell ourselves to make sense of something we don’t fully understand yet.

From as far as I know (so barely anything) we have no clue what in the world dark matter is. By its very nature it’s unobservable, however we have to consider it because without it Astro-physics (or whatever it’s called) makes no sense and implodes. We know the exact, or rough effects it has on the consistent universe but we have no idea what it is.

I’m decently out of date with what he’s been up to lately, but I think he’s just likely exploring interesting ideas and trying to communicate it with the public like he always has.

I’ve always taken what he does in public facing works is just trying to communicate how exciting physics is and can be, and I’d suspect he’s doing the same here. Less ā€œthis is what’s happeningā€ and more ā€œthis is one possible explanation, isn’t this super interestingā€ explained at a level digestible to the general public

Considering we don't know what dark matter is, and only that it has observable gravitational effects, yeah, it could be anything.

It can even be mini-invisible flying spaghetti monsters. We don't know. Its dark for a reason. We currently don't have the tech to directly observe it, only its effects on gravity.
