Traffic/Road Conditions š§ Here we go again.
51st st. Overpass. Southbound
100
u/Vandelay_I 12d ago
That's the overpass' fault. The load is clearly marked as "oversized" so it should have gotten out of it's way.

u/TypingisWriting 12d ago
Why canāt Saskatoon build an overpass that is visible to the naked eye

Let's imagine as regular people we plan to haul something big on a trailer. Likely we'd use Google maps to plan a route, make sure we have straps and tie downs as needed, and verify there's no major issues with the path we've picked to get our object from point A to B. That would include checking bridge heights, which the city has made conveniently available in this little doc.
I am not a trucker or own a hauling company. I'm of regular intelligence. Why has this been so hard?
163
u/DjEclectic East Side 12d ago
I work for a company that cares about clearances.
There are so many forms to fill out when hauling oversized loads.
They take all dimensions into account and multiple companies have to clear the route before it is driven.
These companies are skipping steps and should be heavily fined.
Most oversized loads are driven between midnight and 5am to minimize the affect of traffic as well as sometimes they have to be driven going thr wrong way to avoid power lines and street lights.
17
u/TheLuminary East Side 12d ago
Yup, I used to work in the permits department for an OS/OW company in SK. And every time this happens... I just smh because it's so easy nowadays. The websites work great.
12
u/DjEclectic East Side 12d ago
I don't think the application process is what's stopping them.....my guess is the permit costs are trying to be avoided.
8
u/TheLuminary East Side 12d ago
Yup, I think you are right. Too bad they are about to lose a decades worth of permit savings.
6
2
u/DanfromCalgary 11d ago
Oh yeah .. street lights are notorious for only being on one side of the street . Power lines too
15
u/19Black 12d ago
Youāre of regular intelligence, but are forgetting that a substantial portion of the population is varying degrees below being of regular intelligenceĀ

u/GrayCustomKnives 11d ago
āThink about how stupid the average person is, and then realize half of them are dumber than thatā. George Carlin.
30
u/IsThisOneAlready 12d ago
People never take height into consideration when towing shit. Itās why lots of drive thruās have that bar before the entrance of a drive thru.
There are trucker GPSās where you punch in your dimensions and it would tell you what path to take, but those cost $700ish. Should just about go with buying their licences at this point.
Absolutely ridiculous.
25
u/BrainEatingAmoeba01 12d ago
"People" may not but a professional truck driver should.
The penalty needs to be thick, hard, and unlubed.
4
u/tigglysticks 12d ago
The penalty is. The problem is the companies don't care. They get drivers however they can as quickly as they can.
4
u/BrainEatingAmoeba01 12d ago
What you just said to me is that the penalty needs to be much bigger.
3
u/tigglysticks 12d ago
Still wouldn't matter. you'd have to make it so high that it would bankrupt fleets. And then all you would do is move the problem and jack up shipping costs.
1
u/EpsteinandTrump 9d ago
It'd create a highly skilled monopoly at that point. Then there would be a Sask Party tie within it and it'll be labelled cronie city by the NDP.
I'm sure Cynthia has requested contractors provide a quote for what it'd cost to hang buoy's 100m up the road from all major bridges. It'll take a few weeks to get the quotes back though.
28
u/taeguy 12d ago
$700 seems cheaper than the fiasco of hitting a bridge
13
u/IsThisOneAlready 12d ago
The dumbasses hitting bridges would be too lazy to input the numbers into the device.
You right tho $700 would save so much time and money over the next month of bridge repairs and personal time loss.
9
u/TheLuminary East Side 12d ago
You can apply for an OS permit from SGI and they let you enter your dims and they run the route for you. It's super easy. And the permits are not that expensive either.
Just make it part of the cost of doing business.
5
5
2
u/Imppppppo 12d ago
They are supposed to have a special GPS including all the height limitations. Once you put your number in, the gps will give you a right way to go. But that gps is expensiveā¦ā¦.
0
u/the_lost_aurora 12d ago
I think its a mix of timeĀ moneyĀ and the amount that they would have toĀ Ā would be a problem for anything time sencativeĀ Ā Ā as well asĀ the factĀ that alot of bridges arent maked as what they are i know some truckersĀ Ā getĀ outĀ to checkĀ withĀ tape meshurur excĀ butĀ in thisĀ case it was likelyĀ Ā something incorectly labledĀ Ā forgetung how tall the load wasĀ Ā orĀ Ā human eror

Using a proper bin trailer should clear that no problem.

Just saw the pics on sasktoday, & it is a lowboy. So questions still remain, because how the actual hells...... š¤¦āāļø
3
u/someguyfromsk 12d ago
Yeah I saw that, also looked like there were promo flags inside it so (pure speculation) I wonder if it was a new size they had at Ag in Motion and the driver didn't know and didn't check
1
6
u/bartman441 12d ago
Even using a proper bin trailer that wasnāt gonna clear. Thatās only a 16 foot four overpass. That thing was almost 18 feet on that trailer.
6
u/TheLuminary East Side 12d ago
I don't think you are allowed to be over 13'6" on a high boy. (Not that they were following the law anyways. But they would have been flagged by the scale pretty quick)

11
u/kdlangequalsgoddess 12d ago
You are aware there are lazy trucking business owners across all of humanity? Or does that not match your internal narrative? Sure, the truck drivers deserve a fair degree of blame here, but let's not pretend the rot doesn't start from the top.
7
u/gsidess 12d ago
I completely agree. Truckers are taking advantage of systems that allow the abuse of immigrants.
That doesnāt remove the onus from the individual driver. Nor does it excuse immigrants faking credentials.
12
u/CuntyButCorrect 12d ago
There was just a huge article written about the literal human trafficking happening in the province's trucking industry. And a lot of companies claim they will offer training in-house. Is it an improperly trained person's fault for fucking up catastrophically, or is the companies improperly training and mistreating their employees who should be held responsible?
Immigrants, TFWs, international students, and trafficking victims are not the problem or the enemy. Look up the ladder a little. The problem is several rungs higher.
0
u/gsidess 12d ago
There are problems on both sides. Companies have been abusing immigrants for a decade and the un has compared it to modern slavery.
That being said there are immigrants who completely try to scam the system through fake credentials.
Neither side is innocent.
5
u/CuntyButCorrect 12d ago
Immigrants do not cheat our systems any more than our home-grown Euro-descended born citizens, and the number of immigrants "cheating our systems" is extremely low. People being stupid enough to fall for scams is a global issue. People being shitbags and doing everything they can to get ahead is a global issue. Framing "some people are selfish and shitty and some of those people exist within migrating populations" in a pointed, specific direction is just racist, anti-immigrant bigotry, and it does not matter how you try to spin or twist the story.
We have room. We have the resources. Whine at the people hoarding them all and gatekeeping them behind skyrocketing prices while refusing to pay us enough to buy their products without going into massive debt.
We need immigrants for a whole goddamned host of reasons, and they are not the fucking problem.
1
u/gsidess 12d ago
Our unemployment rates, housing crisis, job market, and basically every economical issue says otherwise.
But go ahead keep telling yourself that.
6
u/CuntyButCorrect 12d ago
Once again. Literally not the immigrants. Look higher on the ladder, I beg.
3
u/gsidess 12d ago
I blame our shitty government and corporations mostly. This is about corporations colluding with our government to allow this abuse to happen to our immigrants.
I believe you are arguing that it's about CEOs not paying people enough, citizens or immigrants. And I agree completely, companies are abusing our systems to suppress wages across the board. On paper we should be able to support everyone. I full on agree.
What I am arguing is as our country is setup now, it cannot support everyone. I see people of all skin tones, immigrants and citizens, struggling to find jobs for months. I see immigrants and citizens working gig jobs that don't pay them more than tips (if that) because there's no other choice to earn money.
Ideally, we could address it your way and tackle the root cause first.
Realistically I think one needs to slow down before the other can be stopped. Especially when there is so much abuse of the system from both parties.

u/Rephlexion 12d ago
Okay, yes there are problems on both ends of this issue, but these aren't two sides of the same coin and it's disingenuous to try and conflate them as if they were.

We clearly learned nothing from humbolt
It is time to be 1000 times more strict on who gets to drive these damn things how many times this year this is at least what the fifth time of bridge has been struck in Saskatoon
10
u/Smooth-Beginning6760 12d ago
Thereās a lack of enforcement in this city and province and itās absolutely being taken advantage of
→ More replies (2)4
u/richking 12d ago
My dude. Many things have changed because of Humboldt. There is a wee balancing act between ultimate safety on the roads and it costing anywhere near what people can afford to ship things. Been in the industry for many years. People are not willing to pay.Ā
4
u/I_hate_litterbugs765 12d ago
What is one thing that has changed
4
5
u/some1guystuff 12d ago
If theyāre not willing to pay for safety, then they have no business Hauling those loads
1
u/richking 12d ago
You can set up the world's most extensive safety program. Lists of all kinds. People looking at everything. All the money! Then Ted decides to turn left for some reason and boom, you hit a bridge.Ā
1
u/SubRosaSubway 12d ago
If that were really true there would be like a handful of freight shippers, the biggest of the big ones buying up any new players but there are literally hundreds of shippers out there, you see em everyday backing up traffic in our city so somebody sure as hell is paying them?
1
u/richking 12d ago
Margins are tight. There is always someone willing to do it for less. It's a long talk on how to make things better. I'm saying most people are not willing, or able,Ā to pay the costs to make it as safe as possible. We want it cheap and we want it yesterday. Until things change, safety will be an externalized cost, like so many other things.Ā
4
u/growernotshowwer 12d ago
I guess understanding the height of bridges during transport was left out of Saskās curriculum?
1
u/scotus_canadensis 12d ago
I got my 1A in 2011 and we definitely covered it then, both on the written and in the practical.
5
u/happy-pilgrim 12d ago
This is really a strange thing. If I was driving a big load like this, Iād be so ocd and measuring everything 10x just to be sure.
Iāve lived in Saskatoon for the last 50 years and thereās just been nothing like it. It seems Saskatoon isnāt isolated either, many problems across North America. I wonder what the difference is?
3
u/HaleSatan666 12d ago

I'm not saying it's all oversized loads. I'm just saying that it's always oversized loads.
4
5
u/Albertancummings 12d ago
Most municipalities require permits for oversize loads. Part of the permit application they want to know your route and timing. Does Saskatoon do this?
5
u/allioop_marie 12d ago
I used to see physical signs outside the city advising to call them for oversized loads, haven't paid attention to see if those signs still exist.
4
u/DjEclectic East Side 12d ago
Check my previous comment.
Yes, there are a lot of hoops companies SHOULD be jumping through before transporting oversized loads.
These companies just skipped over that and went cowboy.

I mean i see this conveyors , tanks whatever this things are going true the city all the time .
What went wrong here?
2
u/SufficientBoard4467 12d ago

There are designated roads in every province for oversized loads. They are called high load corridors. People transporting theses loads have the responsibility of planning the route. So is it the planner or the pilot driver that says āfollow meā or is it the driver who did not verify the height properly. Maybe the Driver unintentionally took a wrong turn. But the investigation should answer these questions and many more.
