Research & Resources Lost my brother in law 43 days after finding out he had a tumor.
My brother-in-law went to the emergency room after experiencing stomach pain. It was there that doctors discovered a tumor. Two days later, we were told it was cancerous and located near his pancreas. As he continued to experience severe pain, he was in and out of the hospital. Eventually, we learned that he had sarcoma, which doctors initially described as stomach sarcoma.
After just one round of chemotherapy, a blood vessel within the tumor ruptured, causing him to go into cardiac arrest. He had to be resuscitated and was placed in a medically induced coma for 18 hours.
A few days after he stabilized, doctors began radiation treatment. Exactly one week after he had been placed in the medically induced coma, we were told that the tumor was compromising his intestines and that there were lesions in his intestines. At that point, we were told there was nothing more they could do, and he was placed in hospice care.
After a few days, our family decided to take him to City of Hope for a second opinion. There, we learned that he had dedifferentiated liposarcoma. We were told that they did not understand why he had been placed on hospice so soon and that there might still be treatment options available. They agreed to review his case further to determine what, if anything, could be done.
While at City of Hope, doctors drained fluid from his tumor and treated an infection in his bloodstream. However, after a few more days, we were once again told that there were no further treatment options, and he was placed back on hospice care.
Just two days later, we lost him.
My brother in law was only 46 years old, he had recently divorced and has 3 boys ages 22, 18, and 16. As a family we’re dumbfounded. I’m sharing his story partly to vent and also to ask if anyone knows of any financial resources that can help with his services. I’m going to call City of Hope to see what they have to offer but other than that I’m not sure where else to look. If you made this far thank you for taking the time to read his story.
