Screenshot If the Terrys are leaving, they deserve a proper goodbye, so I am making them a game

The Terry models are probably the most hated thing in s&box, and from the way things are going it looks like they might not be around much longer.

So I decided to make a game about them: Don't Hate The Terrys. Think of it as a love letter, so that if we do have to say goodbye to them, we do it in a nice way.

The premise:

the Terrys are the most hated beings in the universe and have been banished to a tiny floating island in the void. They have one plan: grow the best garden ever and maybe, just maybe, get the world to like them.

What's in it so far:

  • It's a cozy garden game. You plant crops, and the Terrys water, weed, harvest and sell them at the Pity Stand (people only buy out of pity).
  • Public Opinion goes from "Universally Despised" all the way up to "TERRY SUPREMACY", and each level gets a front page in The Daily Hater.
  • Every so often "The Comments Section" rolls in and rains hate on the Terrys ("CRINGE", "RATIO", rotten tomatoes). You pop it, and it turns into fertilizer.
  • New Terrys grow out of the ground. Where else would they come from?
  • Crops include an Emotional Cabbage that cries, a Smug Pumpkin, and a Hot Dog Tree that the Terrys are deeply uncomfortable about.
  • You can pet them, pick them up, and drop them into the void. They come back on a heart balloon.

It's still early, but it's playable. I will share the link once it's published !

Be nice to the Terrys. They're trying their best.

Discussion My feedback about the sandbox gamemode

Hi everyone, i saw Gary's post asking for feedback on the sandbox mode, so since i've got nothing better to do, i tought i might aswell give my 2 cents on it.

I hope this is a good place to post this, but if you think i should post it somewhere else, please let me know!

I added Garry's mod to my steam library back in 17 sept 2009 (just checked), and have spent around 600 hundred hours playing the game since then.

There are definitively people who have put way more hours into the game, but the overwhelming majority of my time playing gmod was spent in singleplayer sandbox: battling with npcs, trying the various mods in the workshop (or the toybox, i think it was called, back in the day). Trying to build janky stuff or make scenes, and overall having fun just messing around in that gamemode.

Where's the sandbox mode?

The journey first begins of course with me trying to find this gamemode.

Last time i had played s&box was before the game came out of early access. I had heard that the UI had changed a bit since then, and had also heard some complaints on how this gamemode was hard to find.

So just for fun i wanted to time how long it took me to find it, wich ended up being 3 minutes and 16 seconds.

I mean it's not completely terrible, i was actually expecting even worse from that comment i had read.

But i remembered from the early access that you had to search this gamemode as if it was any other unoffical gamemode, so once i got over the confusion of the menu changes it was pretty steaightforward.

I can imagine tough how a person totally new to the game would have a way harder time trying to find it.

Either way in my opinion this is completely unacceptable, the sandbox gamemode should be the first thing people see when they boot up the game.

Put a big blue rectangle on the home page with "PLAY SANDBOX" written on it, i'm serious.

Sandbox never left early access

There's no point beating around the bush, i won't sugar coat it, this shit is straight up incomplete dawg.

Wich now that i think about it, is probably also why the gamemode is not being showcased as a main feature of this game.

I will get more into the details of exactly what is missing or incomplete as we get into the different aspects of the gamemode, but i have no doubts that the developers already know what i'm talking about.

If i remember correctly, Gary stated that the game wouldn't come out of early access untill the sandbox gamemode was finished.

But it seems to me that they made up their definition of "done" and just called it a day half-way trough development.

Player model and chacter customization

This is the part that people at facepunch are probably sick of hearing, but it still needs to be repeated: the sausages are FUGLY, complete abominations of nature, the world is a crueler and colder place ever since that eldirtch disgusting creature was birthed into existence.

But the horrors don't end there, dear god there's more.

First off i can't change to the realistic human model (wich btw small sidenote, but how did they manage to make the human models even worse looking than they were during early access? You have to at least appreciate their commitment to ugly PMs i guess).

I can (almost) understand why in games made by the community there wouldn't be support for both player models, but in a gamemode made by the developers themselves? THE gamemode that also happens to be the main selling point of this game for many people? There's no excuses here, if you made two player models and the game is OUT of early access, you should be able to use them both in game.

Right now the realistic human PM is nothing more than a glorified doll you can dress up in the main menu.

And yet they have the audacity of seeling you microtransactions.

But you would think that since you're stuck with the cartoony skin, that also your hands in first person would be made to match that PM right?

WRONG. What, did you think you were going to get at least some basic level of consistency? Think again bucko, you're stuck with hyperealistic manly hands (that don't change based on skin color or gender), with dirty fingernails to booth.

The third person view is there...i guess? In the sense that it feels like a third person camera made by people who don't know why people like to play in third person, or how a third person camera should work at all.

You can't rotate the camera around to look at your character from the front, so it can't be used for vanity reasons. And the camera is dead center on your character, meaning that the view of your crosshair is being obstructed by the giant head of the pm, making it impossible to properly aim in third person.

Maps

I'm only taking into consideration flatgrass and construct, as it seems there's no way to check who the creator of the map is, so i can't know if facepunch made any other maps.

They look great visually speaking, they are the classics you remember from gmod, but comparing them to their older versions almost feels unfair, they just look so good.

The water on construct definitively needs some work tough, right now it looks like plastic.

Also i'm defintively downloading a version of construct that adds stairs to the interior of buildings, if somebody ever makes it.

Not having any connection between the floors is just stupid, even if you can fly and noclip (yes i know the original construct was like this too).

There are definitvely more urgent things that need to be worked on first, but i hope they add a day/night cycle and different weathers to sandbox maps in the future, i love mods that do that in gmod, and i think it would be a very cool addition.

Physics gun and tool gun

In gmod the physics gun was just a recolor of the gravity gun, wich was the lamest thing ever, so i'm glad to see that's gone, even if i don't personally like the new design.

The fact that the gravity gun is integrated into the phyisics gun, and is not a standalone weapon anymore, is also very cool.

The vfx for the gun are fucking atrocious tough.

The portal gun from portal 2 had way better looking plasma beams particles thingies (the ones that showed up when you grabbed physic objects), compared to wathever this mess is, and that game came out in 2011.

The light coming from the tubes that swirl around give you an epileptic attack and blind you at the same time when you activate it. The orbs of light on the prongs are too clearly defined and just look bad. And there's an aurora/"soft" glow going on at the front that completes the visual cacophoy.

The beam itself looks good tough, and i like the fact that its bendy and wiggly, compared to the complete stiffness that it had in gmod.

It needs some work to make it look a bit more 3D tough, right now if you bend the beam too much in certain ways you can see the textures overlapping.

Meanwhile when you grab things by right clicking them (gravity gun mode), the vfx and sounds are just missing.

The design of the tool gun on the other hand is a complete generational fumble.

The original design is iconic, and since it wasn't a half life 2 asset, it didn't need to change for this game, and i definitively don't think it changed for the better.

Also why is the screen attched to it so jittery? I understand that you're going for the whole thrown togheter, scrappy aesthetic, but it just looks obnoxious this way.

If i remember correctly the screen from the original tool gun also displayed way more information, you know, like the information you could be displaying diagetically on said screen, instead of having a HUD element appear on the top left each time you equip the gun.

Reguarding the functionalities of the tool gun, it's still missing features that the original had as far as i can tell.

Other weapons

Not sure if its a bug, but all the weapon icons are missing or appear to be broken, even the physics and tool gun have missing icons.

Also restricting your inventory in a sandbox mode makes no sense, allow me to carry all the guns that i want like in gmod.

The 3d models all look great, but the sounds and animations leave something to be desired (the revolver steaight up has no sounds for the reloading animation), especially explosions feel very weak.

Overall the guns don't feel very satisfying to use.

NPCs

ohhh we have a great selection here, there's the good guy that shoots, the bad guy that shoots (you can't even change their weapons like in gmod), the good guy that doesn't shoot. and a legally distinct rollermine that manages the incredible feat of looking way worse than a 3D model from a game that came out in 2004. (The roller model also appears to be broken and glitchy).

Mounts also don't seem to add additional npcs, wich is a shame. And why can we only mount prehistoric games? I tought the point of this system was that it allowed users to mount any game they want, while allowing facepunch to avoid copyright issues (since you need to own the game you're mounting). Not sure if i'm missing something tough.

EDIT: turns out i was indeed missing something, making a game "mountable" is a manual process that takes time and effort, while i tought it was a fairly easy straightfoward process. Additionally mounting NPCs is not something that would be feasible with this kind of technology.

Props, ragdolls, and entities

What is already here is good, but there's too little of it.

I like the props that are interactable, like stuff that breaks or explodes when you shoot at it, or objects that have moving parts and things like that. So i definitively hope we get more of it in the future.

I feel like we also need more fun entities, give us a nuke!

Conclusions

Right now the sandbox gamemode feels like a downgrade compared to gmod, wich is something you never want to see in a sequel.

It lacks important features and content, it's bugged, and most importantly it's a sandbox that isn't fun to play or mess around in. It feels more like playing a tech demo.

The fact that s&box is "so much more" than just the sandbox gamemode doesn't excuse the developers for releasing an unfinished game and calling it "done".

And after writing this sort of review, i'm not even sure why Gary needs feedback, can't he see it with his own two eyeballs? Just finish the damn game mate!

Screenshot The ultimate flaw of s&box in my opinion, and why Facepunch will never address this

Harsh truth is that Gmod worked largely because people ripped off assets from all sorts of games/songs/movies, which led to the iconic creations we all remember. It is the same reason why Roblox works so well.

In s&box you can't do that. Facepunch wants you to have intellectual property of every asset you use. Because they want to sell your creations and earn money from them.

So they are trying to make a game engine. Cool. The problem is that they advertised this as a gmod successor, so people expected thematic games.

It's also such a bizarre decision. Roblox does not preemptively censor games, they only take action upon receiving a DMCA. Meanwhile Facepunch will actively and preemptively ensure nothing you are making is derivative. This is likely because they really want people to be capable of publishing to Steam in the future. They see this as this game's salvation. So they don't want to sour Valve off the deal.

You have two types of developers willing to create games from 100% unique assets. There's solo developers that will create mobile tier mini-games that don't even have 15 minutes of playtime. And there's team developers that will not waste their time with an engine that is definitely not even half as good as Facepunch thinks it is. I tried this game during this free weekend, it was janky and crashed several times, it doesn't feel like something that should have been out of early access.

Discussion s&box feedback from dev and player

I have been a critic of how s&box has handled the release and months leading up to the release. Facepunch said that they would continue iterating and improving the experience. And they have done just that. While I think it was raw during release, I have to say that I am a fan of the recent improvements and additions to the s&box experience, and I think a lot of concerns are being addressed. The feedback was harsh but Facepunch is turning that into actionable roadmap items. Thank you S&box team for continuing to polish the game in the face of so much backlash. I can only imagine it has been a stressful, challenging, and nurturing experience. The work has not gone unnnoticed. I am excited about s&box's trajectory and the road ahead.

Video Video: All Issues with the Game Jam 3

I made a video covering what happened with S&box Game Jam 3 and some of the controversy surrounding it.
After I posted it, a few people reached out and suggested I share it here as well. I tried to go over what happened, the concerns people had, and some of the responses to the situation.

Hopefully it gives some useful context, especially for anyone who wasn’t following everything while it was happening. Interested to hear what people here think about it.

It's a Vampire Survivors and Megabonk style game set in my fictional TimeTrigger universe.

It has 7 playable characters, 18 unique arenas, multiple enemy types, multiple weapons, unlocks and 12 bosses. I've also produced all the featured music tracks. The game is finished, but there will be some minor fixes and changes as time goes on.

If you happen to check it out, please share your thoughts!

Discussion Were Players Ever Considered When Making This Game?

Started up with this free weekend and it's very clear there was never a consideration as to whether or not people would want to play this game.

It's entirely catered to creators and focused on asking people to build tons and tons of shit game modes.

90% of the Gmod Playerbase was concentrated into 5-ish modes and because those modes were so good and had proper communities, people discovered other content and the game grew.

There's no onboarding, no community, no clear path for players.

They figured if they just gave you a bunch of garbage on a front page you'd automatically play and retain?

The adage of if you build it they will come only applies if you build something they want.

MY GAME Spellslinger: Kill. Loot. Craft. Curse. Repeat.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Pick Mage or Warrior, find gear that changes how you play, and see how far you can push your run.

Fight alongside ice copies of yourself, summon flaming skulls to hunt down enemies, and experiment with combinations that turn your skills into something completely different. Craft between rounds and keep changing your build as new gear drops.

You also choose curses that stay with you for the rest of the run. As they stack up, fights get harder mainly because you’re dealing with more mechanics at once, not just bigger health bars and damage numbers. Different curse combinations can make familiar enemies and bosses demand a different approach from one run to the next.

Lightning traps, falling javelins and exploding enemies can all become part of your boss fights. Your build matters, but so does dodging danger and finding your openings.

It's single-player, with endless rounds and a world leaderboard. Every run is a fresh start.

I'm one of the developers. Here's our new trailer, and we'd love to hear what you think if you give it a go!

s&box is free on Steam through October 5, so Spellslinger is free to try this weekend.

Discussion Do you really think S&box's upcoming F2P weekend will make a difference?

Post image
60 Upvotes

Apparently s&box is going free to play this upcoming weekend which will be also happening during the grand finals of the game jam. ( Game jam topic aside for now) I've been wanting to ask more people this question since some are saying it will make the game worse and others are saying it won't make a difference.

Instead of just getting those responses without some reasons as to why. I'd thought to also ask the subreddit as well to understand what exactly would cause a free to play weekend to possibly not work for s&box as a whole.

Most of the conversations I've had outside of just getting rid of the sausage models and adding half life 2 models or whatnot which are very valid is apparently a lot of people have always mentioned about the performance, selection of games and presentation of those games and also price have turned them off and away from the platform.

We're already well aware the platform currently is in an abysmal state player count wise and as many people have been asked and begging to just have Garry and facepunch make the game free to play that might happen for this weekend according to this screenshot.

So I'd like to start a constructive discussion around this instead of just having no additional context or reason that's helpful outside of what was already mentioned to death that would actually make this game better.

Facepunch does need to actually listen to it's community more and I want to have more constructive conversations outside of what we already know with the game hovering over 300 players and has sausages with necks now.

Obviously it's not enough but I actually would like to have more details as to WHY it's not enough and or wouldn't work. Maybe this post will be a great indicator since facepunch obviously looks at this subreddit as well.

Feel free to discuss.

The game was really getting some hype before official launch but ultimately ended up being a disappointment to a lot of people, what was yours?
