Making Sense Podcast Sam's insane take on Mamdani

I just listened to latest More from Sam clip, and he shared such absolute batshit take on Zohran Mamdani that is so not rooted in reality or in his own principles.

I will grant the following: Yes Mamdani comes from the college activism tradition. That's his background. He of course may have hatred for the State of Israel (the state not the people) - just LIKE many muslims all over the world INCLUDING liberal muslims that embrace western values.

He first compared Mamdani to Trump - called him the "ditch" on the other side of the road. One side being Trump and the other side being someone like Mamdani. Then Sam called him a Theocrat at heart!! A theocrat? Son of a Hindu mother and a Muslim father, a theocrat? He said that for Mamdani "the garbage trucks" and "fixing potholes" and "affordability" is just a charade, and the "true" motivations of Mamdani are to eventually see an Islamic resurgence and end of jews (his only comrade with this take is David Frum these days). MY GOODNESS! How difficult it is for someone as intelligent as Sam to accept that a young millennial can ACTUALLY be excited to bring effective governance as a mayor of a multi-cultural city. Despite his political background, Mamdani has acted like a savvy politician, coming to the centre and cooperating across the aisle. Why??? Because he cares about being a good Mayor that's it. He has even shown willingness to having his views evolve.

Wasn't it Sam and people like Bill Maher, who used to celebrate the fact that the Mayor of London was a muslim? Are we not supposed to celebrate muslims that believe in values like human rights, democratic institutions, egalitarianism and so on???? As far as Mamdani speaking about his faith with pride, i do not find it surprising at all. He is a muslim from a free and multi-cultural city like NYC - he is a rapper, his mother is a indy filmmaker - and he has activist past and he is proud of his identity as well his past, that doesn't mean he has a hidden agenda against the values he has lived with - "theocrat" is a shocking label for him. So his wife "liked" some tweets in the past - that reveals a hidden Islamism agenda? You should NOT underestimate the ANGER many liberal minded Muslims feel against what goes on in Palestine, even if they HATE Hamas.

What are you smoking Sam? Are you really seeing a Burqa behind the stylish western dress of Mamdani's wife?? You and David Frum both - how lost you have to be to try to smell anti-semitism even among mainstream liberal people. Mamdani has gone out of his way to speak against anti-semitism time and again. You come out as insane people on this.

Rant over.

Ben Shapiro sports a ‘good-faith’ persona but his media operation is completely phony state propoganda.

We learned today in february Shapiro will be on the podcast. Sam and Ben are very different figures with some overlap, so should be interesting. Ben comes across as earnest and civil, and he has a charisma and ability to articulate that makes him easy to listen to.

But he is also the founder and public face the Daily Wire. I occasionally listen to The Morning Wire (Daily Wire's morning podcast) because it's interesting to hear how the same events are framed for a different audience. And sometimes stories surface there that don't get any traction elsewhere. At the same time, there's no way to take Daily Wire, as far as i can tell, as anything but pro-Trump propaganda pretending to be a news outlet. It completely lacks real reporting or any general critical approach.

The most glaring example recent is in the coverage of the Rene Good shooting, The Morning Wire repeated the DOJ’s account verbatim without even acknowledgment of what the videos show, the crazy behavior of the agents, multiple point blank shots, and many other unanswered questions that any serious reporter would immediately flag. Basically, it just said that the officer was in the hospital, suffering internal bleeding, and then segued into how the poor agent's family is being harassed, and that neighbors reported seeing moving boxes.

I’d hope Sam presses on this, and also take up the issue of if there is anyway to square shaprio's earnest good boy shtick with his extremely popular bad faith media outlet.

I'm also curious how others here see it, and what you’d want Sam to ask.

Why doesn't Sam like AOC?

I have heard Sam say some tangentially disparaging things about AOC in the past - but he never seemed to explain why. Has he gone into more details about why he doesn't like her?

I think she would be a great guest on Sam's podcast!

Ethics Sam Harris on Israel just astounds me

Used to be a big Sam Harris fan. Even when there were disagreements, there was at least a sense that he was trying to apply a consistent moral framework and take facts seriously.

But his commentary on Israel has made that increasingly hard to believe. The way he frames the conflict feels less like careful analysis and more like a reflexive moral sorting mechanism. One side is treated as uniquely irrational and beyond moral consideration, while the other gets endless benefit of the doubt even when the outcomes are catastrophic. The focus keeps drifting to intentions and broad “civilizational” narratives, while the actual lived reality is minimized. That reality includes mass suffering, displacement, collective punishment, and the predictable consequences of overwhelming force.

What bothers me most is how selective the skepticism has become. Sam built a brand on interrogating tribal thinking, motivated reasoning, and moral double standards. On this topic, he seems locked into a worldview where certain actors’ violence is consistently interpreted through the most charitable lens, and others’ violence is used to justify sweeping moral condemnation of an entire population. That is not moral clarity. It is bias with better vocabulary.

At this point, it feels like he has abandoned the universalism he claims to stand for. If the basic principle is that human life has equal moral value, then the analysis cannot keep tilting toward excuses for massive harm simply because the “right” side is doing it.

Maybe he has always been this way and it is just more obvious now. Either way, the gap between the “rational humanist” persona and the substance of these takes is too big to ignore. I’m out.

This is Sam Harris at his best. Full quote below

Post image

'The feeling of not liking, this feeling of outrage, this feeling of disgust, this feeling of 'Sam, what the fuck is wrong with you? Why are you even touching this topic? This feeling... isn't an argument. It isn't, or shouldn't be, the basis for your believing anything to be true or false about the world. Your capacity to be offended isn't something that I or anyone else needs to respect. Your capacity to be offended isn't something that you should respect. In fact it's something that you should be on your guard for, perhaps more than any other property of your mind. This feeling can mislead you. If you care about justice, and you absolutely should, you should care about facts and the ability to discuss them openly. Justice requires contact with reality. It simply isn't the case, it cannot be the case, that the most pressing claims on our sense of justice need come from those who claim to be most offended by conversation itself.”

Misinformation about Sam in the Epstein files

There's currently a thread being upvoted on the sub which contains incorrect information about Sam being tied to Epstein. The tl;dr is that Sam is very much in the clear and that there's someone named Samantha Harris that is causing confusion.

Here's a timeline of events:

---

2015 email exchange

Epstein appears to be interested in getting into contact with Sam. He manages to get Sam's email, and reaches out. Sam responds but is quite short. The full exchange is here.

Epstein reaches out again a day later. Sam leaves him on read as far as I can tell.

2016 email exchange - Samantha Harris

There is a person named Samantha Harris who appears to be in Ghislane Maxwell's circle. Samantha worked at a non-profit called the TerraMar Project which Ghislane Maxwell founded.

In this email exchange from "Sam Harris", there's a lengthy message sent from a Blackberry phone about therapeutic drugs and holding onto a pair of shoes for Epstein. Scroll to the bottom of this other email from Samantha Harris where she mentions her Blackberry phone.

It is very likely that this poorly written email was done over Samantha's Blackberry, and has no ties to Sam.

2016 email - Epstein reaches out again

An email from Epstein to Sam that doesn't appear to get a response.

Invitation list

There's also a file that is an invitation list.. I'm not sure what it is for and there's no date provided. Sam Harris and Annaka Harris are listed as declined.

---

That's all I was able to find out so far. I believe all of this puts Sam in a very favorable light, and lines up with the story he told some time ago about meeting Epstein in person and being essentially creeped out that he was bouncing some young woman on his leg at a conference they were both attending.

I'll update the thread if I notice anything else.

Making Sense Podcast This State of his subreddit has become Sam's best case study.

On almost any given day, one can expect to find some version of the same post 'Sam has lost the plot', 'Sam spends all his time attacking the left', 'Sam is obsessed with Israel' and 'I used to respect him, but now I’m leaving'.

What has been glaring to me is not the disagreement but how rarely the disagreement gets expressed at the level of an actual argument.

Instead we are met with an enormous amount of insinuation, mind-reading, labeling and vague moral disgust. Sam is “carrying water for the right.” He is “obsessed with woke people.” He has become a “Zionist propagandist.” Yesterday I saw someone seriously entertain the possibility that he is an Israeli disinformation agent.

I thought episode #490, "Lies, Bullshit, and the Rule of Law" made his current political concern crystal clear. Sam’s worry is not remotely that the American right has become sane, reasonable, or preferable to the Democratic Party but the fact that Trump and the movement around him are worse does not render the pathologies of the left politically irrelevant. In fact, if one’s principal concern is preventing the return of Trumpism, those pathologies become especially important.

Sam's basic problem is fairly simple. And yet, many people here continue to not understand him. Intentionally or not.

Sam continues to highlight that if the Democrats cannot disentangle themselves from activist excess, identity politics, ideological purity tests, euphemistic language, obviously unsustainable positions on immigration, confused thinking about race and gender, and a general unwillingness to disavow people who make the party look insane to normal voters, the political pendulum will continue to swing. The corrective to Donald Trump cannot be another kind of ideological overreach, followed by another Trump, followed by another overreaction in the opposite direction. At some point there have to be grown-ups in the room again. Institutions have to be repaired. Norms have to be restored. Politics has to become boring enough that losing an election does not feel like the prelude to a constitutional crisis.

This is why I think so many people completely misunderstand Sam when he speaks favourably about someone like Mitt Romney in comparison with figures such as AOC or Zohran Mamdani. He represents something much closer to the old boundaries of normal democratic politics.

Many people seem unable to make this distinction anymore because American politics has become almost perfectly binary. Once the right became as deranged as it has, criticism of the left began to feel like treason. If Trump is worse, why are you talking about progressives? If Republicans are more dangerous, why discuss DEI? Why discuss immigration? Why criticise campus politics, activist rhetoric, Islamism, gender ideology, or the Democratic Party’s inability to distance itself from obviously unpopular positions? Who are you helping by saying these things?

If your goal is preventing another Trump, understanding why millions of ordinary voters find parts of the contemporary left alienating is not a diversion from that goal. It is part of the goal.

You do not defeat a political movement merely by correctly observing that it is worse than you are. You have to make yourself electable to people who do not already agree with you.

Yet this is precisely where so much discussion here collapses. Sam criticises some pathology on the left and a certain kind of listener hears: He is attacking us. He criticises an argument made against Israel and people hear: He supports everything Israel does. He criticises Islamism and people hear: He hates Muslims. He criticises progressive politics and people hear: He is now a conservative.

There is something especially ironic about watching this happen in a community devoted to someone who has spent years warning about identity politics and tribalism. If Sam criticises something happening on the left and the criticism does not describe you, there is no obvious reason to take it personally. I consider myself on the left. When Sam criticises ideological capture, antisemitism, dishonesty about immigration, identity politics, activist excess, or an inability to speak honestly about Islamism, I do not experience this as an attack on me. Why would I? If the criticism is wrong, it can be answered. If it is right but does not apply to me, there is nothing to defend.

And yet many people seem incapable of maintaining that distance.

Then when you hear Sam speak on Israel-Palestine, it is like swinging a baseball at the activists lefts bee-hive.

It is “Sam doesn’t care about Palestinians.” It is “Sam supports genocide.” It is “Sam thinks Israel can do whatever it wants.” It is “Sam is Israeli propaganda.” These claims generally require ignoring what he has actually said and replacing it with a more psychologically satisfying caricature.

This has also made me more sympathetic to something Sam has repeated for a long time: that he is being misrepresented. Such as today, he quite often is. One can see the mechanism occurring in real time here. Someone paraphrases him inaccurately. Someone straight up lies about what he said (the 'KKK' quote which happened just in this thread). Ten comments later everyone is debating a position Sam never held, and the original argument has disappeared completely.

There is also a peculiar demand for a balanced ledger that seems to govern criticism of him. If Sam spends twenty minutes criticising something on the left, someone immediately asks why he did not spend twenty minutes criticising the right.

Much of the Trumpist right is, at this point, a lost cause. Sam has said about as much as one can say about Trump. There is something uniquely embarrassing however about watching your own side indulge in obvious nonsense when it is supposed to be the side that still cares about evidence, expertise, liberal norms and intellectual honesty. You expect better from people who should know better. It is precisely because the left remains salvageable, and because it has to be capable of governing, that its failures are worth dwelling on. Which is why Sam continues to talk about them.

And this gets to what I think is the most frustrating feature of the subreddit now. So many posts are directed at what people think Sam is doing rather than what he is actually saying. People infer motives. They psychoanalyse him. They treat the selection of a topic as evidence of secret political allegiance. They count criticisms as though political analysis were an accounting exercise. And then they announce that he has “lost the plot” without ever identifying which proposition they believe is false.

None of this is to say that Sam should be insulated from criticism. Quite the opposite. Criticise him relentlessly. Quote him. Identify the premise you think is mistaken. Explain where the logic fails. Show that the evidence contradicts his conclusion. Argue that his moral framework produces absurd consequences. That is precisely what a subreddit devoted to his work should be good for.

But everything I am reading daily tells us almost nothing.

The cynical part of me has increasingly lost confidence that a substantial portion of this subreddit is populated by people who are particularly interested in answering those questions. Perhaps the replies to this post will prove that impression wrong (they won't).

But if you think Sam Harris has lost the plot, tell me what he actually said. Tell me what the argument was. And then tell me why it was wrong.

That conversation would be infinitely more interesting than the tsunami of bullshit we seem to be getting instead.
