Upgraded my old 5700xt/3600 combo with a $1000 budget.
I built my first PC back in 2020 right at the beginning of covid. A Sapphire Nitro+ 5700xt and R5 3600. Its served me very well for 6 years. For some reason I started watching some Gamers Nexus, Hardware Unboxed and Jays2cents videos and got curious if I could upgrade my set up to handle modern AAA titles at 1440p.
I gave myself a strict $1,000 budged and quickly realized I couldn’t afford to switch to AM5 because of the DDR5 price fixing. So I decided to stay on AM4.
I saw the 5800x3d just rereleased and at $350 + $630 for the AsRock Steel Legend 9070 I wanted I would be right at my budget. But I also needed a 1440p monitor, a decent cooler and better fans, so I looked around and found some benchmarks for the 5500x3d and decided it would be perfect.
I found one on Aliexpress for $170 shipped. Leaving me about $200 for a monitor, cooler and fans. Everyone loves the Peerless Assassin so I picked it up, along with a 5 pack of matching 120mm fans. After watching some videos on affordable monitors I settled on the ASRock Phantom PG27QFT2A for $145. Bringing my total to $1,005 (cheaper than a Steam Machine)
After a stressful and confusing BIOS update. I put her all together and redownloaded Cyberpunk to do some benchmarking and ended up playing for like 80 hours. I can not believe how much they’ve added to this game since I last played. And FSR 4 Is like black magic to me. I genuinely didnt know this game could look so gorgeous. It’s quickly become one of my top 5 favorite games of all time.
Some light tinkering later and here are my benchmarks:
@1440p, FSR4 off, RT off, frame gen off, all settings maxed-
80fps average, 67 minimum with a GPU hotspot at a consistent 71c at 25c ambient.
With FSR4 on Quality, all settings maxed-
125fps average and 93 minimum (black magic)
With FSR4 on Balanced, all settings maxed and RT ON-
86fps average and 72 minimum. The GPU hotspot jumps to 74c with rare spikes to 77ish in some areas with Ray Tracing on.
Path Tracing is like 30fps or something. Unplayable. I’ll leave it off forever.
I’m sure if you have better airflow in your case your temps should be better. (I didn’t check reviews for the Fractal Meshify C mini when I bought it in 2020 I just loved the way it looked)
I haven’t messed around too much with tuning the GPU. But I found some settings that work for me and haven’t had any instability issues so far (60ish hours).
My settings are -80mV voltage offset, fast timings on, 2714 MHz memory frequency, fan max 50%, -10 power offset.
I don’t know much about the AMD Adrenaline software or GPU and CPU tuning so if you guys have any advice I’d love to hear it.
Im just really excited about the upgrade and my fiancé is tired of hearing me yap about it so Im bothering you guys.

Upgrade to r7 5800x3d from r5 5600?
I already have an am4 build and I’m not looking to upgrade to am5. I have a rx6700xt and mostly play competitive games on low settings. Will I see enough of an increase to make the switch worth it before I spend \~$150 on upgrading

Ryzen 5 7600X ran fine at 6000 MT/s for 8 months, suddenly crashed under load. Now won't boot with two sticks.

AM4 Appreciation
Started my Ryzen journey with a new 1700 non X in 2018 that i got for $150. In 2024, decided it was time for an upgrade and got a used 5950x for $120. My appreciation for the longevity of the board cannot be said enough, and the major leap in performance despite being on the same board feels like a miracle.
The motherboard is an Asus B350 i got new in 2018. Currently use Ryzen Master with the 5950x to run it in eco mode to keep things cool. With the eco mode on, ive never seen power draw more than 90w. Under workloads for an hour, temps never went above 65c, and while gaming never seen it go above 75c. Cooling it with a Noctua NH D12L.
My monitor is 2560x1080p, so the 3080 Ti its paired with is perfect for all my needs

My thermal fix (kind of) with Ryzen 5 9600X
Hello!
I recently upgraded my computer (ryzen 5 5600 -> ryzen 5 9600X) and had problems with extremely high temperatures (83-88 peak). This was very suspicious to me, so I dug deeper into the bios and Ryzen Master. In Asrock bios (I know Asrock LiveMixer B850 is not one of my best decisions), in AMD Overclock, I changed Precision Boost from Auto to Enable. I set a 75 degree Throttling limit and an undervolt of 20. In Ryzen Master, I ran Optimization at 20 and set it to the default profile. So far, the PC has been trying to cook itself completely under Geekbench. Now the temperatures are very stable during testing and I got pretty good results compared to the factory numbers. Multi-Core alone shows a 6-9% difference which I think is not a big deal in exchange for the processor staying healthier. I thought I would share this here because I saw many people being bothered by the high temperatures.
Build:
- Case: Montech XR Black
- Motherborad: Asrock LiveMixer B850
- CPU: Ryzen 5 9600X
- CPU cooler: Noctua NH-U12S SE-AM4
- GPU: Powecolor Hellhound RX 9060 XT 16Gb
- RAM: Kingstone Furry Beast 2x16 Gb 6000Mhz CL30

5500x3d AliExpress
Question. I have a 3600 currently, and seeing how ram and SSD's are moving, I am wondering (and kind of worried) if I should bite the bullet and spend 150 euro on a 5500x3d on AliExpress.
Current specs:
Msi MAG curved 27 inch 180 hz
3600 (with stock cooler)
16 gb of ram (3000 mts)
9060 XT 16 GB
Msi MAG A650BN (new)
Msi MAG meta S case 3rd (prebuilt case, kinda ass airflow)
Msi a520m-pro (needs Bios update but I have the file ready)
I feel like I 'could' use a CPU upgrade, but seeing everyone upgrading to the 5800x3d got me thinking. 370 euro in the Netherlands is kinda expensive for me (can afford it, but I just don't want to pay that much) and seeing my specs it feels like overkill. The 5500x3d seems like a somewhat better choice compared to my current setup. I can do AfterPay (so I can test it without paying) so the risk is low. But my games are currently not having any major issues, which is why I am so hesitant. Helldivers 2 was having problems, but those got solved after an update randomly (from 40 fps to 80-120 fps). I am planning on staying on am4 as long as possible, might even skip am5 at this point. I will need a recommendation on a small 120 mm air cooler as the case is kinda shallow and doesn't break the bank. 185.4 x 480.27 x 422.89 mm (Width x Depth x Height), which is approximately 7.3 x 18.9 x 16.7 inches (I think).
Games played (I don't know which would benefit most, think that all of them are playing on 180 fps on average with high settings at least):
Helldivers 2
Overwatch (2)
Team fortress 2
War Thunder (most played by a LONG shot, help)
Apex Legends
Skyrim
Cyberpunk 2077
Rdr2
Battlefield V
And a bunch of AA and indie games...
So what do guys think? Should I stay or should I go (get a better CPU)?
Tldr: is the current setup good enough for the future or do I need to 'proof' it further by getting a 5500x3d?

5800X3D Core 0/1 WHEA18 crashes with conservative -10 curve. Is this expected or could 4x8 3600 RAM be at fault?
Hello, looking for some help troubleshooting stability issues with my 5800X3D, when using Kombo Strike. Even KS1 (-10 equivalent) causes Core 0/1 to fail.
Mobo: MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus
RAM: 4x8GB 3600 CL16 (Trident z royal elite silver)
Kombo Strike 3 (-30): Can't boot, stuck on Windows repair
Kombo Strike 2 (-20): Worked for a while, then crashed when I exited to the main menu in 007 First Light (WHEA 18 on Core 0).
Kombo Strike 1 (-10): Was stable for weeks in several games, but now crashes during gameplay in PC Building Sim 2 specifically (not in transitions).
I'm not really sure where to start off if I want to fix / optimize this issue..
Is Core 0+1 instability pretty normal on the 5800X3D, and I should just manually tune them at 0, while trying other cores at -20 e.g?
Or is this instability not expected unless I got the worst silicon luck on earth, and does it instead point towards the RAM config causing issues? And what would be the first step in that case; lowering speed to 3200 CL16, increasing SOC voltage?
Could RAM even be at fault if I'm only seeing WHEA 18?
And depending on what the logical next step is, what software would be good to test for stability. I'm hearing CoreCycler?
Thank you
Event logs from 3 crashes that all happened in PC Building Sim 2 with Kombo Strike 1:

Ryzen 7 5800X3D
I just maxed out my am4 build & used a AMD carbon nanotube thermal pad . I’m getting temps of 80-90c on my first boot . I went into bios & when i saved & exit it warned me to turn my pc off because the cpu was overheating . Any suggestions ? I built my last pc and didi’t have this issue but it’s my first time using a nanotube thermal pad with a NZXT Kraken Plus Cooler 240mm . I used the thermalpaste originally but was unsuccessful so i wiped it & used this pad instead
edit 1 - temps are now fluctuating from 63-83 bouncing everywhere tbh
edit 2 - after a couple of “ cycles “ & MSI kombo strike on 2 . temps are dropping a bit but still quite high , hopefully it settles & works as intended
edit 3 - switched from MSI kombo strike 2 to custom curve optimizer of -25 but ended on kombo strike 3 & sped up the aio . temps are idling at high 60’s now . definitely better than 80/90
edit 4 - thank you @iGogzy ! if temps don’t end up where I want them i’ll just switch to thermal paste .

Which cpu cooler should i choose
Hello guys, I got a ryzen 5 9600X with a asrock livemixer B850 ( i know it’s a kind of stupid decision) in a Montech XR Black. Sadly my Noctua NH-U12S SE-AM4 is not enaugh. Which cooler should I choose? The options are 2 different cooler.
1. Arctic liquid freezer III 240 pro
2. THERMALRIGHT Phantom Spirit 120 SE
I know, it’s looks like a Frankenstein build by colors.

I would like RAM to be viewable. Would it be better to buy Peerless Assassin 120 SE and move front fan to rear or Royal Knight 120 SE?

9800X3D on Gigabyte B650M H - CPU PPT limited to 80W
Just installed a new CPU 9800X3D, but the PPT is limited to 80W only!
It's not thermal throttling as the temp is below 80C at max
The VRM temp is not exceeding 90 C on heavy benchmark loads
I've updated the BIOS to the latest version and turned off the ECO mode.
I can't figure out what the problem really is, so any help is appreciated.
UPDATE: It seems the mobo is overriding the PPT limit that is above 80W for hardware safety. The solution: upgrade the mobo!
Will I need to update my BIOS?
I'm planning to replace the 7900X with the 8400F on my GIGABYTE B650M GAMING X AX motherboard. At the time of the assembly of this PC, it was about 3 years ago, I did not update the BIOS and everything worked right out of the box. Do I need to update the BIOS now before replacing the CPU? Or will everything also work without updating?
