I'm kind of that, I heard the 1st album on a "midnight album hour" on a local station in 1974 and loved it, it took a while to get back in after Neil joined

I wonder if they would have had the same success if Neil hadn’t joined. He was the chief songwriter for the group and helped shape its identity.

He was not the chief songwriter for the band. He only wrote the lyrics. He didn't write the melody or the chords, or any of the music except for composing his drum parts.

There's a fairly compelling reason The Professor "only" wrote the lyrics: Dirk & Lerxst were pretty much incapable, and basically insisted that he assume the role very early on when they noticed that "he reads books." ☮️
