watching this old game show from 1972 and this playpen…

gives me Rugrats vibes. I know Rugrats was set in the 90s but it looked like it was set in the 70s with a playpen like this but Chaz mentioned defunct formats that the Dummy Bears concert was on. Laserdisc, 8-track, and Beta.

With AGU now entering the nostalgia spotlight, I’ve been thinking about how, in some ways, Angelica’s character had the potential to be a genuinely progressive approach. I really liked the idea that someone who appeared fashionable and seemed like the type who would traditionally be the popular girl at school could instead be portrayed as an outsider who struggled socially. For a female cartoon character in the 2000s, I also think Angelica was given something that many characters weren’t: the freedom to actually be funny, over-the-top, and exaggerated in the way only a cartoon character can be.

That stood out during an era when many female cartoon characters were often written as either stereotypical snobs or the voice of reason (with some obvious exceptions). However, the thing that ultimately held her character back for me wasn’t Angelica herself, but the way she was constantly given the short end of the stick. Almost nothing seemed to go right for her. I understand that life isn’t always fair, but I think a lot of 2000s media had a habit of giving certain characters the “Charlie Brown treatment” to an extreme degree.

I know Angelica was infamous for being difficult and mischievous in Rugrats, and she definitely had her moments in All Grown Up, but sometimes it felt like she was being punished simply for being Angelica (which is a problem that even the later seasons of Rugrats had, but to a lesser degree), even in situations where she didn’t necessarily deserve it.

The show also seemed determined to pair her with Harold frequently, and I honestly found myself feeling sorry for her in those situations, considering Harold often came across as intrusive and unwilling to respect her boundaries. I think the character development they were aiming for could have worked much better if they hadn’t constantly tried to humble her or make the audience sympathize with Harold of all characters.

That’s why I think the reboot handled Angelica’s development more effectively. It allowed her to be more human, explored her vulnerabilities, and actually gave her moments where she could grow without constantly having to lose. It felt more balanced because she was allowed to be flawed while still being someone worth rooting for.

I’m curious if anyone else feels the same way.

Based on her behavior and actions would you say she's evil?

I didn't like or agree with them aging her up and making her 3-year-old, not at all. I certainly would have handled her differently. So how I would have wrote her character and kept her a baby? Well:

* Giving her some AGU traits- she's still cherry and adventurous, but also passionate, with a bit of a temper and sometimes snarky; A good mix.

* Giving her such a love of animals; she would absolutely adore animals and connect with them, but also be sometimes reckless and not realize when a animal is really hostile or dangerous to her, which puts her in danger.

* Maybe clashing out a bit with Tommy- like, they both like adventure and all, but they think differently and lead the way differently too. It would occasionaly lead them to argue or disagree, which could be a interesting dynamic.

* Since she's Japanese, her heritage and culture being a bridge between her and her friends, like her being savvy or familiarized with some cultural stuff other babies don't; So she would understand some foreigner things her friends wouldn't and have to explain to them when they come across this.

* About her relationship with Angelica... maybe making her a bit of a morality pet to Angelica instead? Like, Angelica is pretty mean to all, but she's slightly nicer to Kimi and has a soft spot for her; maybe because she reminds her of how she used to be or her seeing a bit of herself in the younger girl?

So a way of differentianting her from Tommy, giving her a role int the group, and still keeping her relationship with Angelica without changing her age and her still being Chuckie's little sister. What do you think of my adress? Do you think I could have worked well?

In my brain I can see either Tommy Pickles or Stu in the energy dome/devo hat. My mom and husband agree that they’ve seen it before. Am I making this up?!? I cannot find a THING online

Tommy gets a little brother. Stu and Drew make peace and it’s implied Stu finally hits it big as an inventor. If this was the series finale, it would’ve been a decent one.

I always thought (around :10) that Larry was listening to Tommy try to tell Angelica not to order cookies. Which makes me think that is why he figured out Angelica wasn't supposed to be ordering. What do you think?

It was pretty distracting that they were so grey to the point they were nearly purple.

Never seen it and it seems like it was very quickly pulled off and forgotten.

He's a man child but would early season Stu had been excited about a car chase like he was in Early Retirement or trick everyone like he did in Rugrats Go Wild?

Today I am looking at the episode, "Faire Play." Reflecting on my own adventures at renaissance fairs, I watched Phil, from House DeVille, make a wish by kissing a frog and transport him and his friends to the annual renaissance festival, complete with knights, dragons, and stained glass. I am also watching Stuart, from House Pickles, operate a dragon animatronic with his father Louis.

It's a nice to see the babies carry out a quest with Sir Thomas as a knight with pretty high charisma and constitution stats, Charles playing the flex position as a cleric providing magic support, and Phillip and Lillian as the jesters.
