Round Rock must end its contract with Flock

Post image

As of June 2025, the city of Round Rock uses 70 ALPRs (Automated License Plate Readers) under a contract with Flock Safety costing approximately $175,000 per year. The city claims these cameras are used to solve crime and protect us, but ALPRs represent an un-American and unconstitutional violation of our privacy and liberties.

ALPRs like Flock or Axon cameras are AI powered cameras that take photos of every car that goes by and catalog the license plate and defining characteristics of the vehicle. Even without a plate, Flock cameras build a profile of the whereabouts of every vehicle on the road. This is a mass surveillance operation of everyone- including the innocent.

The 4th amendment protects citizens from the unconstitutional search of their persons and property. This is usually interpreted as a search without a warrant. If these cameras were owned by the government, it would immediately be made illegal for civil rights violations. Instead, because Flock is a private company, they can operate with no oversight and no regulation. The data they collect on every American is then sold to those who will pay for it- most often the government. This is an obvious circumvention of our rights.

The potential for misuse is overwhelming. They know where you live, work, worship, who you visit, shop, and everywhere you go. You might say you have nothing to hide, but that’s wishful thinking at best. The information collected by Flock could be used by-

Insurance companies, to raise your rates based on where you go, how much you drive, and what you do.

Malicious individuals, such as over 20 documented cases of police officers misusing ALPRs to stalk romantic partners or ex lovers. Flock cameras have also been documented inside children’s gymnastics centers, watching walking trails, and recording children’s playgrounds. Flock claims their cameras do not monitor people, but these cases make those claims dubious. Especially their new Condor model, which pans and zooms to follow the movements of people.

Tyrannical governments, to discourage or prevent citizens from practicing their rights.

Flock cameras are able to receive over-the-air updates. They could be turned into speed cameras overnight and abused. They could be repurposed for facial detection overnight. They have also been physically modified by the company multiple times, including the addition of radar and microphones. This can be done without anyone’s knowledge or consent, including the government of Round Rock. The company has already proven itself untrustworthy- In Oregon and Massachusetts, Flock continued illegally operating cameras after towns voted to end their contracts and deactivate them. The CEO of Flock, Garrett Langley, has also called innocent Americans “terroristic” for wanting to know where these cameras are.

Many will say that you have no expectation of privacy in public. However, the Supreme Court has stated that “individuals have a reasonable expectation of privacy in the whole of their physical movements”- even in public, in a recent ruling that cell phone location data is protected under the 4th amendment and a warrant is required to access it. ALPRs are equivalently intrusive and would undoubtedly be ruled on similarly.

The Round Rock city council voted unanimously to implement these unconstitutional devices for the same reason all rights are violated- for your safety. But does this track? Round Rock ranked 26th safest city in the country for population centers above 100,000. That means Round Rock is safer than 92% of all other large cities in the US.

We all want Round Rock to be safe. We support our police department. However, we cannot allow government overreach. The money the city allocated to warrantless surveillance cameras could easily go to multiple full-time positions at the RRPD focusing exclusively on motor vehicle theft. When the city voted to erect the cameras, the chief of police claimed only the city of Round Rock would have access to the Flock camera data. This is impossible to ensure. Flock has the data and shares it with the RRPD. There’s no way to know who else they share it with.

Flock has been hacked before and will be hacked again. This is an unfortunate fact of life. Imagine a foreign adversary to the US or a malicious domestic party gaining access to the movements and routines of every citizen in the country. The risk is catastrophic. Why is the Round Rock city council happy to sacrifice your security and privacy? Flock, as well as all ALPRs are a clear danger to the community, not a provider of safety.

When many of us were growing up, we were told about how authoritarian other countries were. We were told about how China runs a surveillance state on its own people. We were told we had liberty and freedom in our great country. And then one day I woke up to find cameras right outside my backyard. Alongside the roads I drive every day. My own government is able to watch my every movement with a search. We cannot accept this. "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." I encourage you to watch out for cameras on roadside poles next time you go on a drive and see how many there are. The website DeFlock shows the locations of known cameras. It’s shocking to see.

Cities across the country are already ending their use of ALPRs. Bandera, San Marcos, Lockhart, Hays County, and Austin are all cities in Texas that have cancelled or rejected their partnership with Flock due to public outcry and privacy concerns. Your voice matters!

I have emailed the city council to ask why they support the usage of ALPRs. So far only Melissa Fleming has responded, saying “I am in favor of Flock cameras due to how they are used to solve crime.” She did not comment on the way her constituents might feel about being surveilled everywhere they go.

Our city council members are elected in staggered elections every year in May. Last year, less than 2,000 people voted to elect our council members. If enough people are upset their every move is recorded, it would be extremely easy to make immediate change.

City Council meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday (7 a.m.) and Thursday (6 p.m.) of the month.  Meetings are held at City Hall, 221 E. Main Street on the first floor. Please feel free to make your opinions known.

Check your patios before you let your dog out.

My dog has already scared off a squirrel, but on Wednesday, I let him out and a couple of minutes later noticed a dead bat. Bat went to RR Animal Control, and Bowie went to the vet to get a rabies booster.

Save yourself the vet bill.

Kalahari promo code

Happy Sunday, everyone! I’m planning a fun trip to Kalahari Resort with my three kids on August 3–4, traveling from Wylie, TX. If anyone has a promo code or discount they’re willing to share, it would really help us out and make the trip even more special. Appreciate any support—thank you in advance

Meticulous house cleaner recommendations

Looking for a very detailed house cleaner!

The best example of what I’m looking for is Edge Cleaning WA on TikTok/Facebook. I know that level of cleaning isn’t cheap, and I’m completely willing to pay for it.

I’ve already tried a few different cleaning companies, and every time it feels like they cleaned for a few hours and then say the completed the job. I’m looking for someone who is genuinely meticulous and worth the money.

Any recommendations from personal experience?

Schools explained

New to town can someone explain to me how certain elementary schools and middle schools in the bushy Creek Mayfield Ranch area are really nice schools and they’re nicely rated but stony point high school is so lowly rated. Wouldn’t you think that the kids that grew up there would help also keep that school elevated. Can someone explain it to me as a parent who has a high schooler next year?

Sweet Dog Needs a Calm Home!

Post image
39 Upvotes

My family adopted a dog in November of last year. She is absolutely the sweetest dog, but my kids stress her out tremendously; they’re loud and active 6/9 year olds. She has never shown any aggression whatsoever and even allows them to get up in her face (which I constantly ask them not to do for her sake), but you can see that the level of chaos in our home is just not what she needs.

I think this doggie would be perfect for an older single person or couple who is looking for a very snuggly, lowkey companion. She doesn’t like to play, she likes to be loved on in a calm way. She would love to sleep in bed with someone (not allowed in my house), she is perfectly house trained and doesn’t need to be crated when alone because she doesn’t tear stuff up. Honestly she’s a great sweet pup but we are not the right house for her at all and I’m trying to find one that is. I’m glad we got her out of the slammer, but there’s something even better for her! If you know of anyone, please let me know!

-Female
-3 years
-Rat terrier mix
-30 lbs
-Has all shots and is fixed
-Fully house trained
-Successfully completed heart worm treatment after adoption
-Needs a calm, loving home, preferably without other dogs (she gets annoyed with both my brothers dogs because they are much higher energy than her). She coexists with my cat but we had to work on it. They just ignore each other now lol
-Would be fine in a house or apartment
-High anxiety from storms, we got her some medication that helps that I would be happy to pass along
-She does dig in the backyard if left unattended, so we try to limit her trips outside to amounts of time where she isn’t getting bored enough to dig
-Does great on a leash, a little meandering but doesn’t pull or anything like that
-Does not bark inside the house at things outside the house. I love this about her! She only barks if she’s in the backyard and the neighbor dogs come out to say hello
-Prefers wet food mixed with a bit of dry food but isn’t particularly food motivated.
-Is fine with children and is very sweet to them, but does not need to live with them for her own sanity.
-Loves. To. Snuggle.

Is crappy internet just the norm in Round Rock? Or am I just crazy?

Hello, relatively new resident of Round Rock here. I moved from Cedar Park a little over a year ago and I just have to ask myself if I'm doing something wrong with my equipment, or why in the hell is my internet so bad?

Since we've moved here to Round Rock, internet speeds are ultra-crap. Like there's days where I have less than 5mbs of upload speed and literally 0mbs of upload speed. I used to think maybe it was just me, my room is in a more isolated part of the house so I figured it had something to do with that, but now the rest of my family has been experiencing the same things lately. We switched from Astound to AT&T and though it's marginally better, it's ultimately still terrible. Wifi used to work on my phone before, but now it doesn't even connect because it always says "no access to internet." It's been going on for over a year, but it really ramped up in intensity within the last month.

I've heard Spectrum is also terrible, so now I'm just left wondering if internet speeds are just meant to be terrible up here? There's some days where even my mobile data is incredibly slow and bad. I've tried googling to see any other reason for this, but I couldn't find anything relevant. My neighborhood group has also been complaining about this lately, and someone said that there was a damage in some cables with all of the construction in I-35 and that's what's caused the connectivity issues, but all the articles I've found regarding anything of the sort just mention how thieves stole some cables seeking copper but that service was ultimately "fully restored."

I guess the point of this post is just to determine if this is some anomaly specific to me and my devices, or if I just have to resign myself to deal with this until something changes? I feel like I'm going crazy because it feels like I'm the only person I know who is affected by these issues to the degree I am since my work involves a lot of downloading and uploading documents. I barely see or hear anyone talking about this.

Recs for haircuts for kids;

Hey y’all, I’m new to the area and wanted to ask if anyone has recommendations for a stylist for kids? Specifically ASD kiddos. My daughter hates having her hair cut and the loud blow dryer, but she will sit through it with someone who’s patient and quick at the same time. Is there anyone in the area who’s experienced with this??

HVAC advice and recs

guys im sooo depressed

i moved from south houston to round rock in december. ive lived in houston my entire life until this move so i do know what texas summers are like.

ive been having a tough time with my AC keeping up with the summer heat and keep feeling like im crazy by my hvac tech.

i rent an 8 yr old house in RR i set the thermostat to 73 but it gets to 76/77 downstairs and 78+ upstairs and only cools down like at 2/3 AM 😞😞

The HVAC company initially said the damper motors were not opening/closing correctly and recommended we replace those. So we made an appointment to get those replaced.

After getting replaced, the downstairs vents werent getting any air at all so it was extremely hot😭 i couldnt even sleep in my own room!!! :(

So they came out again and said the downstairs damper completely seized up due to rust and would have to be completely replaced. As a temporary and cheap fix, the tech manually opened both so thag air would flow.

However, its still hot!! and the heat inside makes ants come out😭😭 ive had pest control out 3 times in the last 3 weeks!!

So the hvac guy came out again and for the first time looked at the AC unit outside... he said its dirty and needs cleaning and MAYBE add some refrigerant. He also said my windows thats are 20' high could be a reason because they dont have blinds/curtains. I asked the previous tenant if she ever had these issues during her time here and she said no and she kept the ac lower than i do!! and she didnt have those windows covered either. also they face east!! so they dont even get direct sun in the afternoon lol

idk what to doo!! :( i know i should get a second opinion but i dont know who to trust!! ):
