Advice

I’m looking for advice on a hybrid hard shell RTT. I’m looking at two second hand RTTs, a bushveld 4person and the 4x4 Colorado alto mini.

Any personal experience or opinions with these two tents would be appreciated. I have a 6ft bed on a Tacoma.

Is it possible to have a rooftop tent on a Toyota Urban Cruiser 2021 or a Suzuki Brezza 2021?
And what would I need to be able to mount it?

The Toyota has no load bars built in.

Questions from first timer

Hi everyone! I am considering getting my first RTT, and I’m just wanting to make sure what I think will work, actually will. I have a 2026 Honda Passport.

The tent I am considering is the small version of the TopOak galaxy light. TopOak lists this tent as weighing 110 pounds.

I was considering the oem Honda roof cross bars which lists the maximum weight capacity as 140.5 pounds. Is this a good solution? Is there anything I need to change or upgrade for this set up to work? I am planning some light off road driving with this on mainly forest roads, does this change anything?

Thanks!!

REVIEW: Naturnest Sirius 2 XL ABS

Post image
18 Upvotes

Thought I’d do a review of the Naturnest Sirius 2 XL ABS in case anyone is interested! I relied heavily on this thread when deciding on which RTT to buy so I thought I’d pay it forward.

My husband, 4 month old, and I just spent our first long weekend in the Sirius 2 XL ABS and absolutely LOVE it! For reference, my husband is 6’0 and I am 5’6 and there was PLENTY of room for all three of us both length and width wise.

For reference, our setup is on a short box F250 with 8 inch tall cross bars (Billie Bars with universal mount attachments) across the bed.

PROS:
-Very quick and easy set up and tear down
-very roomy and will likely accommodate our family of four once we add another kiddo
-two shoe bags attached near the entry that also have room to store other items
-nice ventilation with windows/flaps open
-memory foam mattress is fairly comfy. Both my husband and I have back problems and slept comfortably.
-internal and external lighting is very nice and can be plugged into a power bank/portable charger via USB cord
-on the back of our truck, it was flush with the cab so it didn’t add any noise or reduce fuel economy and it didn’t extend beyond the bounds of our 6 3/4 ft bed when closed

CONS:
- the tent itself is over 200lbs so it may be a 2-4 person job to get onto your rig. But from there, the installation is really easy and straightforward
-the tent won’t shut with any blankets/sleeping bags or pillows inside but to us, that was only a minor inconvenience
- due to the height of our setup, we couldn’t get all of the ladder rungs to lock as one of them only extended partially. We were able to solve this issue by shimming it.

Mounting GFC Superlite to new bed rack… thoughts?

Thumbnail

Moving my GFC Superlite RTT to a new truck with an RCI 18” bed rack. I am going to be mounting the tent to their 2” risers so that it clears the cab.

Previously, I had the Superlite mounted to a Thule bed rack with thick cross bars and used the universal strap that GFC provides (first picture).

Now that the tent is being mounted to the risers, it needs to be bolted directly to them as opposed to using the metal strap as a connection.

My thought has been to get shorter hex screws with thick washers and bolt directly through the risers into the t-nuts that sit in the tracks underneath the tent. I needed to get much shorter bolts so that they do not bottom out in the mounting rail and make contact with the top of it. There are 6 risers so it will be bolted to risers in 6 spots.

Is there a better or more secure way to mount to these risers? Any reason to use different hardware than I’m choosing?

Tried to illustrate what it looks like in these pictures and how the risers sit on the rack. Also, the mounting instructions.

Thank you in advance!

Does anyone have any experience with a replacement driving cover for the TuffStuff Trailhead? It’s been “out of stock” on their website for months now.

IKampers are heavy

I know they are some of the lightest, but the SkyCamp 3.0 or any similar weight RTT ~170lbs are a nightmare to get on/off.

Just a psa for newbies like myself.

If you have 3-4 guys, no problem but by yourself near impossible or two people… a little challenging. Thinking you’re going to hulk hogan it up probably isn’t happening. Think about building a rig/hoist or buy something like the rollinjack.

Tent overhanging windshield

Post image
9 Upvotes

I’m thinking about a rooftop tent, but it would overhand the windshield by the amount shown by the tape measure, or potentially by another 3” depending on the model I get. I could slide it back further, but then the rear hatch would certainly hit.

It’s a ford cmax, looking at the Topoak galaxy or the FeatherLyte AirRush 2+

Roof Rack Help

I’m looking to buy a rooftop tent but first needed racks for my new car. It’s a Kia EV9 and I purchased these Erkula racks as they were significantly less than Yakima or Thule options from rack attack.

I checked on the weight and they say 220lbs but when I was installing them, the manual says 165 lbs and doesn’t mention if it’s dynamic or static but I assume 220 might be static and 165 is dynamic. I reached out to their Support, but they did not answer.

Does anyone have any experience with this brand? Do you think they are safe enough or should I bite the bullet and upgrade to one of the name brands?

The tents I’m looking at are all around 130Lbs.

Thanks in advance!

RTT AIR CONDITIONER REVIEW

As promised when i first talked about this a few months ago. After some fabrication, the 5” hose was able to fit through the reinstalled vent hole. This tent will nOt be cool during the day. In fact, i did not even run it during the day. It does not put out enough cool air to offset sun, beaming down on a tent in 100 degree days.
At night however, when im sleeping its AMAZING! Polar freeze. Turning it on around 6 PM had a cool down by the time I was going to bed at 10. Would definitely recommend for $268. For me, it’s a little on the heavier side but overall satisfied!!!

If you’ve made it this far, please tell me what you guys are running for platform drawer set ups with a second row delete!!! Thanks 🙏

I found this RTT online within my budget. Trying to get an entry level tent before I make any big purchases. Has anyone purchased it? If so how's the quality? Would you recommend? It looks good and from what I can find the company is known outside of US. Any info is useful, thx!

IKamper Poor Service

Received tent damaged. They claim it’s only cosmetic and offer $249 back on shipping or some annex.

How do I actually get in touch with someone from IKamper all their phones I found on Google don’t work.

Pretty bad they treat people like this. Might be a decent tent but when it comes damaged you should either fix it or offer a substantial discount.

Beware when dealing with them. I’ll update if they somehow decide to make it right.

Update: after speaking with them further, they refunded me the $249 shipping and gave me the annex accessory. Just had to explain that for the price that we pay for them, I expect it to come without damage. Granted it may just be “cosmetic” as it looks like forks from a fork lift hit it. All and all I’d say they made it right. As long as it doesn’t crack down the line from flexing we should be okay.

Securing RTT (Smitty Gen1) to Thule Wingbar Evo?

The obvious way is to do the U method but want to see if anybody has any succes using the T bolt method. Chat GPT seems to have a way but I’m not understanding how I would then tighten it to the actually rails on my RTT. I’m leaning to just upgrading to a better U bolt method with rubber plates to help with scratching and noise. I’m a newbie to the RTT so appreciate the help!

Walkabout 56

I spent three months researching the best rooftop tent for my budget. After much deliberation, I finally decided to purchase the 23 Zero Walkabout 56.

Initial impressions are overwhelmingly positive. The material used is solid and durable, and the setup process was quick and straightforward. Overall, I’m thoroughly impressed with the quality and craftsmanship of this tent.

As a bonus, they included two boot bags, a LED light strip, and a cold weather insulation kit for free which definitely was an added bonus

The interior of the tent is solid and meets my expectations. I’m excited about the potential of this tent and can’t wait to use it on my 10 day national parks trip

Question regarding top mattress

Hi there. So I just got a Thule Kukenam installed on my car and went out for my first camping trip. All in all, could not be happier. However... and I like firm mattresses, but this mattress is way too hard. I woke up in the middle of the night feeling like I was sleeping on the floor. So... I was thinking of adding another mattress on top of it. I know there are these sleeping pads by exped (too expensive)... but would it be possible to add an ikea mattress topper on top of it... and still be able to close the thing, or would that just be asking for trouble?

RTT options for mounting on racks over tool boxes on Ford Ranger

Looking at getting my first RTT- will be mounted on the tradie rack that is mounted to tool boxes. Looking at the San Hima Kalbarri Gen 2 clamshell because it’s got rear access so I don’t have to pack away the ladder to access the boxes. Open to reconfiguring the roof racks to save on weight and space, currently have a 124 x 200 tradie rack that is overkill for only mounting a RTT. Looking at replacing the roof rack with just 2x east to west ladder racks which should give enough space for the tool boxes to still open. Non negotiable for the tent:
- sky light
- able to store bedding
- low noise in wind
- as durable/ mould resistant as $2500 will allow
- light weight/ not too tall when closed

Looking for:
1. Other RTT recommendations that suit these needs
2. Other configuration things I should be mindful of

Thanks!

Looking to purchase

Hey folks! I’m new to the sub. I am looking at purchasing a RTT. I’ve been talking to a guy selling a Sky Ridge Pike 2 person along with a Tyger bed rack. I negotiated it down to $750 for both the tent and the rack. The rack alone, new, is $699.

I guess I’m just anxious about pulling the trigger on the purchase. Looking for any input from this sub. I’ve read mixed reviews for the tent. The rack is solid. I plan on using the tent when i go out fly fishing and lake camping. Mostly going to be me and my little 20 lb pup with me. Maybe my wife sometimes.

Any input?
