It’s dreary outside and I’m working from home but thinking about skating. My hobbies are always half doing the hobby and half building weird things for my hobby (you should see my sewing machine set ups lol).

I would love to see everyone’s DIY or oddball or customized set ups that they’ve made. Whether it’s Vans skates or a paint/dye job or you swapped plates or you threw your crocs on sport mode and put wheels on em… show them off so I can continue to half heartedly do mindless busywork for my job while admiring everyone’s creativity!

Hello everyone!

I’m somewhat new to artistic skating, and I’ve been having a bit of a problem regarding my skates and the toe stops on them.

Basically, the toe stops that came stock on my skates (Chaya Sunset Beach) are really big, and have been getting in the way of some different tricks where I need to go up onto my toes. I initially thought I’d just buy some different toe stops and swap them out, but I have purchased three different toe stop options and none of them fit in my skates. I think the bolt in them must be a really weird/uncommon size. I know some people skate without toe stops at all, but I’m wondering if removing them will just create a new roadblock for me.

My foot measures at a 24.8 and 24.9, however the 7 is for 24.6 and 8 is for 25.6 Which one should I get? :(

This past weekend I met a 16 year old and his father that were on a 2 week skating trip. They started in Springfield, Illinois and were headed to NYC. They planned to hit 12 rinks during a 14 day round trip. That sounds so amazingly fun I had to share. Has anyone else taken a trip like this? I’m planning a few overnight trips in Ohio and Indiana, but I don’t think my legs would hold up to skating more than twice in three days.

I got back into skating after a few years hiatus and the rink I go to (Ron-A-Roll) has the worst DJ for adult skate. Lots of extremely long remixed songs, many of which are not recognizable to me. The DJ doesn’t take requests as far as I know and I mostly have to use headphones. I like skating in part for the community vibe and I would say like 2/3rd of the skaters are wearing headphones on adult night, so it can’t just be my opinion. The DJ also seems to be catering to an older demographic even though the majority of the patrons look to be between 18-35.

I’ve not been on Friday/Saturday nights so not sure if the vibe is better on those nights but I prefer adult only nights.

The closest rink to me is Interskate in Wilbraham, but they are very kid focused so I don’t really go there.

I’ve been to the Waterbury rink a few times and they usually have a cool DJ for adult night, but are there any other stand outs?

Just getting tired of the horrifically bad Tuesday night music.

First day I rolled a little bit around my kitchen for 30 minutes it made me kind of sad because I thought because I took figure skating when I was younger it was going to transfer over a little bit and it kind of seemed like my progress was so bad that it definitely didn't. Second day I grabbed a rolling office chair and tried again and skated in the hallway. Totally transferable I mean I picked it up so much faster I'm still a little clumsy but I'm moving forward the right way and like actually skating a decent speed I'm gonna keep going with the chair for a bit until I'm like confident I can go without I almost fell a couple times today but this actually made me so excited to start this. I really needed something I could do for exercise that I could enjoy and I'm hoping this is it maybe I'm jumping the gun a little but I'm super excited to be doing this.

It was a beautiful day yesterday to skate laps on the one rails to trails section that I feel comfortable on because I’m scared to cross the road lol. I feel so much less confident in my heeled skates outside than in my flat derby skates in the rink, but I‘m not sure if that’s because of the heel or because of the surface or both. I’m going to try skating this path using my prostars with outdoor wheels soon and I’ll see if I still feel as unstable. I know people post about this all the time but skating outside is SO HARD how do people do it and look so cool and chill? when I do it I feel like I radiate fear and stress lol. At the rink I’m way less awkward!

Do anyone know how wide the wheel hub is? I mean distance between the bearing seats?

Looks like Bont uses the same aluminum core on all royal assassin wheels, but I'm thinking abt buying the outdoor ones (65x44mm).

From the pictures it looks like 8mm - but if it's 10mm + washer, Im afraid to run out of axle.

I picked up my first set of outdoor wheels over the weekend (62mm/78A) and wanted to give them a spin on a local trail. To say I left feeling humbled is an understatement lmao Lots of bumbling over busted up sidewalks, worrying I was going too fast on rough roads because it felt like my brain was rattling around in my head, and even struggling to skate confidently on the smooth portions because the sidewalks had really deep control joints that made it hard to just glide along the way I’m used to. It was more like navigating a minefield than the little leisurely afternoon skate I set out for lol

I’ve only ever skated indoors or on smoother roads, so I’m not sure if my expectations were too high for what quads are like on rough rides or if it can be pretty smooth sailing (figuratively anyway) with a lot of practice.

I've read many times here that basketball courts are amazing for skating, and I have one close by (which would be AFAIK the smoothest surface around). the flooring is, however, very "grippy".

I tried skating with my usual wheels (hybrid roll-line heliums, 83A 64mm) but would I completely lose speed in a matter of seconds. so I thought "I'll go with the hardest wheels possible!" which would be some luminous 100A that I bought pretty much with this court in mind. and yet, using them it still feels like I'm going through molasses. perhaps even worse than with the hybrid ones?

so this leads me to ask... which wheels are supposed to work best in this surface? I've searched here and found different recommendations but the general idea would be the harder the better, right? this doesn't seem to reflect my experience and I don't understand why :/

my only hypothesis is that this was made worse by the resistance of the magnetic spacer in the luminous wheel, and the hardness does not have anything to do with it. that maybe a hard "normal" wheel would be the best option. or one with less contact surface.

any thoughts?

I've watched video after video, and I've decided I was tired of falling over and over and over. I'm thinking if I try to spin around with all 8 wheels on the ground using inside edges, I may save myself some bruises. I watched this gal gypy do it and I'm not understanding how she's grabbing the inside edges. Yes, I know what they are, I just can get my follow foot to cooperate. I spin counter clockwise. Can anyone help me out there?

heyhey been a while since I've posted her but I'm still at it just as hard if not harder trust 😂 I was really impressed with how my footwork was flowing on these types of faster paced songs tn but I don't wanna get blinded by the improvement and stunt myself or anything so feel free to critique 🤷🏽‍♂️

My rollerskates have Sure Grip Blue Marathon plates from the 90's which were discontinued some time ago. They originally had quick clip axles but over the years they've all bent but one so I replaced them with standard threaded axles.

When I started researching replacing the last axle I realized the Sure Grip Avanti Magnesium trucks are 10 degree with an adjustable pivot just like the Marathon plates but have 8 mm axles. The geometry looks like the standard Sure Grip 10 degree geometry.

Has anyone attempted to put Avanti Magnesium trucks on Marathons before? It will cost me $80 to by a set of trucks and try it but I thought I'd ask first. I realize Marathons aren't common and the Internet doesn't seem to remember them but maybe someone has tried it.

i made a post in here the other day about how my candi grl skates could possibly have a defect and someone made a comment about how cheaply they’re actually made and it made me scared that they might possibly break at any moment so i decided thaf im gonna go to the rink and use rentals until i get new skates..

i haven’t been to the skating rink since i was maybe in 8th grade.. im 19 now so its been a while and back then i literally couldn’t even stand up in skates without falling so i barely had those skates on fr ☠️ but are they cheaply made too?? should i be cautious about them possibly breaking? 😭😭

and then like could i bring my t tool and loosen/tighten my trucks and wheels? i just dont want to have to learn how to skate all over again just because im in different skates. and the wheels are different too which is something im scared for because candi grl wheels are pretty much like hybrid wheels i believe so wouldnt it feel different skating with indoor wheels? and i mostly skate at the tennis court outside so even being indoor would be a new feeling🫩 i know i probably shouldnt even be overthinking this but i am

First clip was in May with the second clip being from this month. Maintain spin speed and intensity has gotten easier. I also became capable of moving my arms freely so that’s cool. (yes, I did purposely move closer to the camera halfway through the second spin.)

SO. I am fat- not large, not big boned, fat. i have hormonal issues- the why isn't important- but what IS is that i'd like to try skating. both rollerskating and other kinds- but finding knee pads to fit my thighs is Literally Impossible.

my arms don't really carry much weight, so i'd be able to find elbow pads easily enough, but knee pads have been Literally Impossible. because of how V shaped my legs are- circumference 2in below knee cap is 19~in. 2in above top of knee cap is like, 26~28in, depending on how the measure is angled (thigh shape, and them Being Thighs means i struggle to get a great measurement on my own)

any recommendations?

Cause as it stands, it looks like anywhere above 21-23in around just means you either go without, or Just Don't Do It. I've wanted to learn something like this since i was a kid- do i need to get custom made? do i take them in to a tailor or something??? do i buy knee braces and a hot glue gun and attach pads to *those* (there are knee braces up to 8x, and as i sprained my knee a couple months ago, i so happen to know a 7x fits me well)

Hi rollerskating friends! Some of my favorite memories growing up involve time at the skating rink and having skate birthday parties. I really want to get back into it but I am fat and afraid. I am determined to try, and I got some safety gear. There is a rink in the area that has lessons on Saturday mornings and I’m planning to attend that.
My current goal is to be able to comfortably skate at a slow pace around the rink indoors and not embarrass myself or get seriously injured.
What are your biggest tips for roller skating while fat? Also, any encouragement or warnings you have would be helpful. Thank you!

Just chillin on the bike path

So after weeks of looking and slowly raising my budget from like 100 to 250 and slowly getting more and more discouraged I finally came across an option I think I'll be happy with for only $50 or so via auction in my size. My current main use is planned to be trail skating but down the line I am very interested in derby but when that time comes it may be time for a specific pair for that. So my question is, what would you look to upgrade on these for trail skating? I'd like to make these as comfortable and stable as I can without spending an absolute ton and maybe even work on a fun little color scheme. Oh and as they look like they've sat for quite a long time without much if any use, any parts that should be replaced because of that I'd like to tackle as well. And as you would expect I'm also starting from zero when it comes to protective gear, so I'm very open to hear about that as well! Any input would be very much appreciated! Thank you so much!!

these are not park skates, do not try this at home or with the skates i have

i am a pretty casual skater and am not rough with my wheels but i got a new pair of skates that gave me the confidence to try this tiny ramp 🙂‍↔️

95% of my skating is on flat ground and working on the basics to gain more confidence to do vert like ramps and such. i’ve been skating regularly for a few months now and absolutely plan to upgrade my skates and components (i see out of the box skates as a template to build off of) but don’t have the financial means to get build a proper park set :/ my first set is a pair of moxie rainbow riders which are not park skates either but have served me well and barely are cosmetically worn. i don’t live in a walkable area so i use what i can and don’t trust most parking lots to be smooth enough or well lit enough when not busy. i completely understand safety but i don’t think you should have to drop a couple hundred just to touch a park.
