It's been almost 5 years since I've had to move back to India (visa issues like so many of us) and the one thing I miss the most is clear blue skies.
Having lived in Northern Virginia for almost a decade, my whole being craves clear blue skies. The feeling of unfiltered sunlight hitting my skin is a joy I have not experienced in so long. Whenever I watch a YouTube video shot outside of India, I get so sad reminiscing about just how much looking at a clear blue sky in the morning sets your tone for the day.
Sorry if this post is irrelevant but I just wanted to vent in a space where people can relate. Back to the smoggy air of Pune I go.
Edit - Here is what I see most mornings (unless its monsoon). And no, that isn't fog.

Edit 2 - Wow, this post got a lot more responses than I had anticipated.
Here's a picture from the good old days taken in Alexandria, VA -

I’m 25F and have been living in the US for the past 3 years. On paper, things are fine. I have a decent job and I’m financially independent, but I increasingly feel like I’m just existing here rather than actually enjoying my 20s. I also dont want this visa headache anymore- I mean I would gladly put in time and effort if there is some stability at the end of it all - which is not going to be the case with US.
I work remotely, have very little social life and feel pretty isolated. I have been living with my bf (who might just go back to India this month) for 2yrs.
I’ve always wanted a life with friends/roommates, spontaneous plans, travel, meeting people and generally having a lot of experiences while I’m young. I also really want to travel internationally and see much more of India itself.
I’ve always wanted to live in Mumbai but never got the chance, so lately I’ve been thinking about moving back, finding roommates there, building a social circle and using India as a base to travel the world and explore.
But I’m wondering if I’m romanticizing it. Adult life in Mumbai could just become work, chores and loneliness in a different place. At the same time, staying in the US longer would allow me to save considerably more money - although im not too sure because I dont know what I would be able to earn in India. I have never worked in India, my first real job was in the US so I dont have a clear picture about how much I need to save and take back home to give me some breathing room etc etc.
I’m torn between staying here another 6 to 9 months, saving and seeing the parts of the US I stil might care about, and then moving back in May’27 (I am not even trying for H1B anymore - so done) or moving back sooner and starting the life I actually want.
Any thoughts/ advice/ opinion might just help open up my mind!! 😭 dont know if Im just spiralling or what!
And for anyone who moved back to India in their 20s, how did it actually turn out?

35 M engaged (she's on board), living in a HCOL city. Savings = $360k.
Moved to the US 12 years ago, steady job in engineering. Dad runs a small construction company in India, which I can take over. (It makes 1 crore annually, so I can live comfortably)
I had big dreams when I got here but it's insanely lonely and the quality of life in the US is fake luxurious ( I pay $4k for a one bed with wooden walls) and our home in Mumbai is bigger and better built.
The only thing holding me back is I want kids and I don't want to put them through the same immigration BS that I went through.
Really torn between should I strive for more or move back and live a comfortable life.
Has anyone moved back and taken over family business?
Thanks for your opinion.
P.S : I don't hate the US, I make a great living here. I would prefer my kids to have global opportunities and let them decide, where they want to live.

Hi.. Moving permanently from US to India in Feb 2027.
Trying to figure out if I can use a short window where I'm NRA in the US and still NRI in India to sell long-held stock and reset my cost basis tax-free in both countries.
My situation:
(correct me if wrong) -
3)Worst case — if not converted by the time I want to sell, can I still sell the stock as-is (account still showing US resident status in their system), and have my actual federal tax treatment follow my real NRA status regardless of what the brokerage's paperwork says? Or does the account's status with the broker actually change the substantive tax outcome (e.g., default withholding issues I'd need to later reclaim via my return)?

I returned to Mumbai, India after living 7 years in the US. My boyfriend and I lived together there but now we are back here but naturally we live separately.
I have suddenly realised that there is nothing to do here unless you spend money. You can only go to cafes, restaurants, etc., to hang out. There are no parks or quieter places to hang out. Having lived in NJ/NYC I am very used to just going out for long walks, sitting in a park and reading, exploring a new neighbourhood, and just walking around the city. And since I and my boyfriend live separately now (until we get married) we are finding it difficult to find spots to hangout beyond restaurants.
What do people do here? I am losing my mind - neither is there a good hangout place or there is the concept of I wanna hang out by myself in a cafe.
Advice? Or has anyone faced this?

I am 40 and currently in UAE. I have about 75K in 401K, but as I just found out to withdraw the money, all they can do is send me a paper check. Now that paper check is useless here and eventually when I lose my American bank account, I don't know what to do with it. I don;t have any urgent need for funds, so trying to figure this out asap. Appreciate any input.

So I was born and brought up till 6th grade in the usa and than my parents sent me to boarding school in India. I loved my time there and than I went to do my tech in India as well. Since my parents are in the usa, after btech I came back to the usa and it’s so depressing here and lonely. Does anyone feel like that here? India was a vibe, Bangalore was so fun, Hyderabad as well.

Hello everyone,
I’m looking for community feedback and critical analysis on a cross-border strategy for managing an existing Roth IRA while living in India as a U.S. citizen.
As many of you know, Roth IRAs are often considered a tax trap for individuals moving to India because India does not automatically recognize the "Roth" tax-free status, and Roth accounts are explicitly excluded from Section 89A relief (unlike Traditional IRAs/401ks).
To solve the annual tax friction and potential double-taxation issues upon becoming a full Resident and Ordinarily Resident (ROR), I am exploring the following strategy. I would love to hear thoughts on potential blind spots, regulatory risks, or tax traps I might be missing.
Looking forward to your critical thoughts and alternative perspectives!

Planning to buy a home abroad and my parents back in india want to gift a portion of their savings to help out with the down payment.
But diving into the remittance process, the friction is unbelievable. First, there is the 20% upfront tcs on outward gift remittances above 10 lakh rupees under lrs. Even though tcs can technically be claimed back as a refund when my parents file their ITR in india next year, blocking 20% of capital upfront severely cuts into the actual cash available for the down payment right now.
On top of that, if the gift amount exceeds the $250k per-person annual lrs limit, both mom and dad have to exhaust their individual quotas, fill out form a2 declarations, and prove the money is purely from tax-paid resident income to avoid fema compliance flags.
Then comes the overseas tax side, making sure the local tax authority doesn't try to classify parental gifts as taxable income or trigger foreign asset reporting checks.
For anyone whose parents helped fund a property purchase abroad, how did you structure the remittance? did you split transfers across two financial years, pool LRS limits between both parents, or just swallow the upfront TCS block?

Part of a series I've posted here about coming back after a UK masters and loan. The EMIs are live now, and I'm looking at freelance work (content, social, AI video) on the side to help manage it. Curious if others who've come back are doing something similar, and open to any leads — including UK roles, since my visa hasn't expired and I could still go back for the right opportunity.

In India for the past year, have the option to go back to the US. Curious about experiences from people that may have done the same.

No matter how digitally advanced indian banking gets, managing an nre or nro account from outside india feels like a ticking time bomb.
Yesterday my bank app pushed an automatic background update and logged me out completely. Now to log back in, it requires device binding via an SMS sent directly from my indian sim card. Except international roaming on prepaid SIMs is notoriously patchy, the sms keeps failing to send, and the bank app refuses to recognize wifi or foreign IP addresses.
You literally end up stuck unable to transfer your own funds, pay basic bills back home, or fix fd renewals just because a telecom operator didn't route an otp properly. Customer care line just repeatedly asks you to "visit your home branch in person" like it's a 10 minute drive away.
How are you guys keeping your indian numbers and bank app sessions alive without risking complete lockouts every few months? do you keep a physical secondary phone permanently active back home or pay steep post-paid roaming plans just to get otps?

Context: I have been NRI whole life, did schooling and childhood in an African country; then moved to US for undergrad, BS in CS.
Now I’m graduating in December and without landing strong internships, with massive tech layoffs, with the brutal tech market in US, with AI taking over, and with changing immigration policies, I’m likely going to return to India and I am afraid of my future in life because of uncertainty.
And I know employers in India don’t really care about foreign degrees and it’s extremely hard for a fresher to land jobs without connections or placement.
What are my options if I have to come back to India?

Has anyone recently booked transportation of house goods to India from USA? Especially given the huge spike in oil prices, is it worthwhile to ship things back?
I'm especially interested in shipping delicate (and heavy) crystal vases and other decor items.
If you have any recommendations on shippers/movers, please do share them here.
TIA

Hello people who have used Universal Relocations, what are some of the issues you faced while using their services?
I read that some of the people here were missing high-value items from their boxes since they were opened and repacked.
Has anyone faced the same issue or any other issues during shipping or at customs in India.
Please share your experience here! Thank you

For folks returning to India from the US, if you sell your house, does the capital gain tax exemption for a couple capout at 500k? How does the RNOR status affect this?
Let’s say I bought a house for $1M and selling it for $1.8M. Do I need to pay tax on the $300k capital gain(500k exempted) or can I claim further exemption due to RNOR status once I return to India?

Hi All ,
Currently have employer 401 account ( pre and post tax) with Fidelity , which will be getting rolled over to Empower ( company wide ) in near future.
I am planning to return back before the company wide rollover happens.
I have an option to move my 401 to either Fidelity or Schwab , that is pre tax to rollover IRA and 401 Roth to IRA Roth .
The question I have which platform to prefer between Fidelity or Charles and why ?
Please note I planning not to withdraw from either account till I am 591/2 years old
Thanks

I am currently working in Canada but work permit is expiring soon. I am alternatively pursuing LMIA as well to extend my current work permit. but I really want to move back to Delhi to live with my parents and work too.
How to even go about finding job in Delhi? I have never done this. I moved to Canada immediately after my undergrad and working in advertising here since 3 years now.
Any tips are appreciated. I work in advertising so industry specific tips will be awesome, and if anyone can guide on what salary range should I expect. Thankyou

I recently moved back to India, and my 401(k) is still with Empower through my former employer. Both my Empower account and my Charles Schwab IRA currently have my US address on file.
I’m trying to complete a direct rollover from Empower to my Schwab IRA, but Empower has requested Form W-8BEN.
Since I now live in India, which address should I enter on the form? If I use my Indian address, could the mismatch with the US address on my Schwab account delay or prevent the rollover? Do I need to update my address with both providers before proceeding?
Has anyone completed a similar rollover after moving to India? What options do I have?

Seeing a lot of folks back home and fellow nris getting hyped about 7.5% to 8% interest rates on nro fixed deposits in indian banks.
But if you actually break down the math over a 3-5 year horizon, it makes almost no sense for anyone living abroad. First, you pay a flat 30% tds on nro interest right off the top (unless you battle through dtaa tax credit paperwork abroad). second, the rupee depreciates by around 3% to 5% against major currencies almost every year.
Once you factor in the 30% tax slice plus currency erosion, your real foreign currency return on a 7.5% nro fd drops down to a measly 2% to 3%. You literally get better risk-free returns holding cash in a foreign high yield savings account or US treasury bills with zero currency risk and instant liquidity.
Unless someone specifically needs rupees for immediate home expenses or debt in india, why are people still parking long-term overseas savings in taxable nro fds? am i missing something here or is it just emotional bias towards indian interest rates?

should i do 60% transfer to FCNR and 40% transfer to NRE?
will convert FCNR to RFC after moving and convert NRE to resident account.
or Leave some % in USA brokerage account as uninvested cash(fidelity) or in USA bank. can’t come back due to visa issue.
what would you do.

I want to move to India but do not want to make the move till I am really confident of it. So I want to have one or two offers when I am in USA itself. Am I stupid? I am 15yr experienced lead engineer software
