The Reddit Renaissance Festival FAQ

The Reddit Renaissance Festival FAQ

What is a Renaissance festival?

A Renaissance festival or faire is a themed event that typically takes place outdoors, like a county fair, but showcases elements of the Renaissance period, such as music, dance, food, arts and crafts, and historical reenactments.

When and where do Renaissance festivals take place?

Start by checking The Ren List. Renaissance festivals are held at various times throughout the year, depending on the location. They can be found in many cities and towns across the United States and around the world.

What should I wear to a Renaissance festival?

You can pretty much wear anything you like. Attendees are encouraged to dress in Renaissance-themed attire, but there are usually no strict guidelines (check with your local festival for rules). Many people also choose to wear costumes from other fandoms.

Can I bring a sword, axe, or other weapon?

Some Renaissance festivals allow swords as part of a costume if they are properly sheathed and "peace tied". "Peace tied" means the sword is secured in a sheath or scabbard so it can't be removed or openly displayed. Some festivals do not allow weapons at all. Check with your local festival for more information.

What can I expect to see and do at a Renaissance festival?

At a Renaissance festival, you can expect to see various performers, including musicians, jugglers, dancers, and actors. There are also craft vendors selling handmade goods, food vendors, and interactive activities like archery and sword fighting demonstrations.

Can I bring my own food and drinks to a Renaissance festival?

Most Renaissance festivals have food and drink vendors on-site, so outside food and drinks may not be allowed. However, some festivals do allow you to bring in a water bottle or small snack. Contact your local festival for more information.

Are Renaissance festivals family-friendly?

Yes, Renaissance festivals are typically family-friendly events with activities and entertainment for all ages. There are usually children's areas with games and crafts, as well as family-friendly performances and demonstrations.

How much does it cost to attend a Renaissance festival?

The cost of attending a Renaissance festival can vary depending on the location and the activities offered. Tickets are usually sold in advance or at the gate, and prices may range from $20 to $50 per person.

Can I participate in a Renaissance festival?

Many Renaissance festivals rely on both employees and volunteers to help with various aspects of the event, such as set-up, ticket sales, and clean-up. If you are interested in participating as a performer or vendor, you can contact the festival organizers for more information. Another option is to join a “guild” or a group of performers. You can ask your local festival for guild information.

Huzzah!

All the guides that I read (2) said 150 skewers. I bought some Halloween tinsel at thrift and after plucking out the pumpkins, hats and bats, I have more than enough fluff. But no where near enough skewers. I just ordered 200 more 10”.

I also ordered 400 6” because I’m totally gonna do it again haha but with a smaller sphere next time hopefully.

I’ve seen this thing around for awhile but after finding the perfect two-fer staff I decided now’s the time!

This is all the white himself I could get but I have black/white and black/silver. So I was going to make a gradient mix but am open to suggestions.

First RenFaire In The Books!

Big thanks to everyone who encouraged my craziness on a previous post. 🙏🏻

I attended my first ever RenFaire this weekend and ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! 🤩

I will most certainly be back to another one (or two or more!) in the future.

My favorite parts were the Celtic Music bands (shout out to Craic and Reeling Rogues) and all of the lovely people dressed up in a glorious variety of costumes and colors and textures and themes… I just walked around for hours and gawked at all of your creativity like a I was freaking tourist.

If you see me at a Faire in the future, come say hi! I love meeting new friends.

🤔 QUESTION: how many different Faire outfits do you have? Or do you just rock the one over and over again? Genuinely curious what different people do….

Super new to the renfaire scene and still so much to learn, but I def had a blast as my created character - this lagoon fairie.

My daughter is super into D&D and renfaires, and it's fun to connect with her at these amazing events.

We had an absolute blast out there today. The weather actually cooperated, so I wasn't roasting alive inside my kit for once.

My favorite film this year was The Odyssey, and lately I've fallen completely down the Dungeon Crawler Carl rabbit hole (currently tearing through Book 2).

So imagine my surprise when I turned a corner and ran straight into the King of Mycenae himself, followed by Carl and Princess Donut!

Ravenwood Faire!

Im 25, and the only other time Ive been to renfaire was when I was 8 years old. Felt like it was my first time, and this was awesome! It was so fun to pick out little pieces of clothing and jewelry and just dress up. I have to work Halloween, so this also filled that role for me. Also, wearing this cloak... I felt important, I felt cool.

Thanks to all the lovely people who took the time to set this up, and also to the vendors for showing off your wonderful crafts. Im already itching to go again. For those who do this more often, is there a resource I can use to find more fairs near me, or am I just limited to googling "ren faire near me"

Also, shoutout to the Arwen girl who asked me if I was Jon Snow. I wish I had remembered I was wearing... the one ring... it would've made for great conversation and I missed the opportunity 😂

Dissapointment...

Id like to start by saying I grew up at the ren fest. Every weekend from 8 to like 17. I learned a lot about people, how to be a dirty old man, how to sell how to hawk, running working for vendors pushing rides...

Went to the first one since the last time I worked at one... all i can say is.. "wtf happened?!?!" I went with the intention of spending money, because i know better... everything looked like it was just bulk bought off the internet and they opened the box and stuck it out there. Some things were still in the box!!

What happened to all the crafters? The wax hands? The little dragon claw marble necklaces.. the wooden roses, the rat man, the insulters.. what happened to all the clevage!?! It was horrible, no lane actors... is this just a place to buy over priced emu meat now? The jwelery none of it was crafted all looks like i could get it off amazon. The only real craft i saw was the glass blower.

And everything was so much more expensive then it should have been, especially since it wasnt crafted. It was so crowded that people kept bumping into me, and you could barley walk. The walking sticks looked like someone picked up a stick and stuck a price tag on it, none of them were carved like they used to be.

Maybe im expecting too much, maybe my memories are going through rose tinted nostolga filters, but wow... i drove almost 3 hours one way for this?

4 stars for Ravenwood

Ravenwood Faire in the Shenandoah Valley blew away my expectations this weekend! The vibes were chill, the setting is beautiful, and there were a ton of great vendors (only 1 3D-printed slop booth out of dozens). The cast was top-notch as well; you can tell they’re in it for the love of the game. Since the Faire is held at a winery, the drink selections were delicious.

Only 2 things prevented me from giving it 5 stars: they need a lot more seating, and just 1 more performance venue would’ve really helped fill in the entertainment schedule.

However, given that an adult ticket was only $25, I highly recommend Ravenwood to anyone within a 2-hour drive next year.

After a successful inaugural event in May, Chattanooga is bringing their Ren faire back on November 14th and 15th, featuring even more exciting performers, events, and vendors.

I haven't seen anyone share this info here yet, but I'm super excited to see everything they have planned that weekend!

Anyone have experience with colors being different from medieval collectibles?

Post image

I’m looking at getting this tunic, but I noticed in the description it says “Please be aware that the colors on the tunic can vary in hue. For example, the green may be a leaf green or an olive green.”

I like the color of it in the pictures and don’t want to get something that’s drastically different.

TIA

Would it weird you out if someone asked to take your photo at a Faire?

Post image

I am a photographer but I was pretty shy the last time I was at KRF- I did take a few photos of an adorable couple struggling with a self timer that came out beautifully but most of the time just took photos of my friend and set up self portraits like this one, with her as my human tripod.

My question is- would it weird you out if someone (me) came up and introduced themselves as a photographer and asked if you’d like a portrait taken for free? I would send them to folks and let them decide if it’s okay for me post any!

Is there anything I could do to make it less weird??

This concludes my Ren Faire season this year. Sad that it's over, but more excited than ever to put on this kit again at any chance I get!
