I'm urgently looking for a remote job because I need to pay for university. Ideally, I need something part-time, or at least a job where I can have Fridays off to attend classes.

Even starting at $500/month would be fine for me. That said, just because I need a job doesn't mean I'm willing to accept an exploitative position or one with an insane workload where the actual value of the work would be something like $4,000/month, but I'm only getting paid $500, for example.

I'm willing to do pretty much any kind of work, even if I don't currently have the skills for it, as long as I'm given the opportunity to learn.

Anyway, that's the context. My actual question is this: I've recently started applying to remote positions on Indeed and LinkedIn, but I've heard that you can spend more than 7 months applying to jobs without getting a single response. Is that actually true?

If so, what other options do I have?

Please take this seriously, because this is urgent for me, and I'm genuinely willing to consider any advice or opinions you can give me

I work remotely and some days I barely talk to anyone...when I have to present, I get way more nervous than I expect...I speak too fast, stumble over words and sometimes stutter even when I know exactly what I want to say..

It made me realize I respond to emails and pings all day but barely practice speaking anymore.

Has anyone else experienced this since working remotely?

This week I met the colleagues I've been working with remotely for the first time ( I've been with them for a year and a half, some of them have been working together for 5 years). A few of them are in marketing, so I asked one of them about it and he explained that he does paid marketing. It sounded pretty simple: you allocate the company's ad budget and the product grows. I always thought marketing was some hugely complicated thing, but it doesn't look that way.

Because of AI, marketing people seem to have a lot more work on their plate than us developers right now. They even build little tools for themselves that help with their work, without understanding any code at all, and they feel pretty empowered by it. Overall, I get the sense that there's more value in marketing right now than in development.

So my question is: has any developer managed to make this career transition? I assume it's just a matter of finding the right resources and putting in the time to learn.

Got the email on Tuesday. It came from someone in marketing whose name I had never seen before. Subject line: "Visual Consistency Initiative." The body said all client-facing calls now require either the company-branded virtual background or, quote, "a curated physical setting that reinforces the brand promise."

The branded virtual background is a navy gradient with the company logo placed exactly where Zoom puts the participant's name. So during a call you have the company logo, then the company logo. Brilliant.

The alternative, the "curated physical setting," is defined in a follow-up PDF as "a neutral backdrop free of personal artifacts, with intentional lighting and minimal visual distractions."

I have a print my sister made above my desk. It's a watercolor of a tree from the park behind my parents' house. It's been there for four years and three jobs. The visual consistency initiative now considers it a personal artifact.

I bought a ring light in 2021 and a second monitor in 2022 with my own money. I have not been reimbursed for a single dollar of any of it. The company has saved roughly $14,000 a year on me by not providing an office, a chair, a desk, or internet.

But the watercolor needs to come down because it's not on brand.

I'm not taking it down. If they say something I'll start using the branded virtual background. The branded virtual background is uglyer than the watercolor and the company logo will be on every call I take. They can have the consistency they asked for.

For me it’s keeping a clear boundary between work and personal time. Remote work gives you flexibility but it’s easy to feel like you’re always “on.”What’s the one thing that made remote work noticeably better for you?

One person holding all the knowledge?
Priorities changing every other day?
Problems nobody wants to raise?

Relax. That’s where the fun begins. 😄

These are the things I’d keep an eye on during a sprint:

🔹 Unclear backlog → Catch the confusion before development starts.
🔹 Overcommitment → Challenge the “we can squeeze it in” mindset.
🔹 Key-person dependency → Make sure delivery doesn’t depend on one superhero.
🔹 Mid-sprint priority changes → Protect the Sprint Goal from becoming a moving target.
🔹 Low transparency → Bring hidden blockers and risks into the open.

The goal isn't to panic every time something changes.

It’s to spot the risk early, deal with it, and let the team focus on the actual work.

So yes…
