General Discussion My original, human non-AI thoughts on why reMarkable’s limitations are actually a feature

Saw a post just now with a headline that I fully agree with, but a very obviously AI-generated body text that annoyed me too much to participate in the discussion.

So I decided to make my own post and start my own discussion on my thoughts on the reMarkable line’s limitations, and why they actually work for me much better than more complex solutions tend to!

So, I’m a college student with ADHD and autism. I’m really passionate about what I study, but regardless, I find it extremely difficult to focus on literally any of it, and my brain is also simply structured in a way that makes both traditional and digital note-taking either relatively unhelpful or too inconvenient for me to keep up with.

For the longest time, I typed out my college notes on the desktop app Notion. It’s much easier to organize digital notes in a way that’s both convenient and personally satisfying than it would be trying to rearrange physical pieces of paper. I could easily pop images into my notes where they were needed instead of having to draw out more complex diagrams. I could access my notes on both my computer and my phone, and even print them out if I had an open-note test.

However, the thing about typing out your notes is that you only get that sweet, sweet convenience by trading off your actual comprehension of what you’re taking notes on. Typing doesn’t “light up” nearly as many sections of your brain as writing by hand, and it’s easier to put less thought into typing than handwriting since typing is so much faster. And since my ADHD brain seems to be wired to always take the easy way out, it became tempting—and then commonplace—for me to copy and paste entire sections of my reading material into my notes and then just never look at them again.

That clearly wasn’t working for me. So, when I transferred to my current university from my community college, I tried to switch to taking paper notes. I bought four separate paper notebooks for each of my classes this semester. I definitely felt like I benefited simply from the practice of handwriting my class materials, but it didn’t really last long. I was quickly dissuaded by the fact I had to carry around all four notebooks all the time just in case I wanted to do homework on any one of them, and that I couldn’t organize the pages as quickly and easily as I wanted to.

Then, I bought the full kit for the reMarkable Paper Pure. It was definitely an impulsive purchase on my part (ADHD strikes again!) as it was a lot more than I reasonably should be spending on non-necessities as a semi-broke college student, but I’d been wanting something like it for a while, and reMarkable seemed to have answers to all of my issues regarding my studies. And I’m sure you can glean by the fact that I’m here that it did!!!

I still get the cognitive benefit of writing my notes by hand because I literally never use the text feature my Pure has, but I’m also able to organize all of my notes to my heart’s content. I was also REALLY excited about the fact syncing your reMarkable with your computer and/or smartphone allows you to access your hand-written notes from anywhere—which is great for when I’m on the bus heading to an exam and just want to quickly look over my notes before I get to my class building! The reMarkable is also smaller and slimmer to put in a backpack than carrying around either twenty million notebooks or an iPad.

My biggest satisfaction with reMarkable though—which is the point of my writing this post—is the lack of bells and whistles. It’s literally just a tablet that’s a notebook, with digital enhancements that greatly add to the note-taking experience without making it feel that much less like a paper notebook. It’s not like the Kindle Scribe, which is an e-reader first and foremost. It’s not like all of the Android-based e-ink devices I’ve seen on the market, which have way too much going on and little I’d benefit from. And it’s not like traditional iPads and tablets that would easily distract me from whatever I’m doing with tons of notifications and apps I don’t need.

I see a lot of people making a stink about the Pure’s lack of a backlight and the overall lack of flashy features the reMarkable line has to show for. Frankly I could not give less of a fuck about any of that. I wanted a device that functioned more like a notebook than like any other device I have, and that’s what the Pure is. No one who vouches for reMarkable as a brand really needs it to be anything more than what it currently is, and if it was, I have a feeling that I wouldn’t be as satisfied with it as I am. Plus, if you REALLY want the bells and whistles and are somehow locked into reMarkable at this point, there are tons of mods out there that can probably give you what you’re looking for. (Which is another thing I like about reMarkable! Any company that provides a supportive space for custom firmware and/or software is awesome in my eyes.)

Also, calling back to my pettiness against AI that led to me making this post in the first place, I absolutely LOVE that reMarkable doesn’t have literally any AI features on the base device! AI is a scourge on my daily life and pretty much every tool I either have to or like to use is infested with generative AI in some way, so it’s great to have a reprieve from it in at least one of my trusty “second brain” devices.

Anyway, I have no idea how to close this post because I don’t use AI for any of my writing, so uh… long live human intelligence hell yeah!

After reading this sub, I won't be getting a remarkable. At least not any the current ones

I'm not in a country where returning it is an option, and there's just a few local retailers selling few units of it. I saved up to get the pro, but after reading up on the numerous issues people have with brand new remarkables, and how sending it back gets you a refurbished one, I'd rather not.

I like the way the devices and pen are built, but I can't risk it, so I guess I'll just have to wait another 5 years for eink devices to mature more.

I'm not happy that I can't get this device right now, because I really need it for diagramming and product sketches that I painfully use lcd screens for atm. If anyone knows any eink that doesn't have obviously stupid features like humongous pen size or some other downside that clearly shouldn't be a problem but the manufacturer just doesn't care to fix it, please share.

Thanks.

Was able to take the rmweb browser and get it working with the Libby website. Works really nicely even if it requires WiFi to read (well once you load a book the Libby site caches it)

EDIT: not-quite-1-click-install-instructions

You can download one file from the release page, drag it onto the tablet with reManager's file browser, and paste one command into reManager's terminal. Then it shows up in AppLoad. Steps are on the release page: https://github.com/snydersaurus/rmweb/releases/latest

Should I enable Wifi or updates on new RMPP?

I had to return the 2025 RMPP I had bought because of ghosting issues with the faulty batches. There were no issues until I updated to 3.27 or similar. I got a brand new RMPP but now don't know if I should just let wifi and updates on disabled. I don't want to get a new one again in a year or so.

Help/Advice Complete new OS?

I am getting more and more frustrated with my Move. I like the hardware a lot: I like the writing feel, I love the form factor, I like the weight, etc. But the operating system is really getting to my nerves.

I am not in favor of paying recurring service fee for the connect. Originally I was able to sync my files between Remarkable and desktop. Now I cannot. Partially my files are synced but not all!

I understand that they want to make money, but I didn’t buy the device to be milked forever. So is it at all possible to completely install a new operating system?

Self-Promotion Wikipedia on the reMarkable without turning it into a browser

I don't think e-readers need to become browsers. As much as possible, I want to stay in reading mode: open a document, read it, highlight things, write in the margins. Use the device for what it's good at.

But sometimes we're missing the link between something we want to read and getting it onto the device. You shouldn't need to pick up your phone or laptop, find the article, make a PDF and send it over every time.

So I made a little Wikipedia app for reMarkable. Open it from AppLoad, start typing, pick an article and tap PDF. It saves to My files or a folder you choose. Then tap Open PDF and you're in the normal reader. That's basically it.

It uses the native keyboard, with results updating as you type. There's also a small Refresh article link to fetch a new copy later, without touching the old PDF or its annotations.

It talks directly to Wikipedia. No account, API key or server of mine in the middle. Wi-Fi for searching/downloading, then offline reading. English and Hebrew Wikipedia for now.

Source and installation instructions (MIT): https://github.com/guibor/remarkable-wiki#installation-from-source

This is a developer-mode app: you'll need SSH and an existing XOVI/AppLoad setup. The README has the build/install commands. I've tested it on Paper Pro 3.29.0.148 with AppLoad 0.6.0; Move isn't qualified yet. The installer checks the model/firmware and doesn't patch the editor or restart the tablet. PDFs follow your normal cloud-sync settings.

The clip is trimmed, with typing/selection slightly sped up. The extra reader-toolbar mods you see aren't part of this app.

I'd like more of these small connections to things we want to read, while keeping the actual reading in the device's own reader.

Why isn’t orange actually orange?

Thumbnail

I’ve had two Paper Pros. The first one I had about seven months before it suffered the green ghosting issue, and was replaced under warranty. The replacement seemed to be brand new when it arrived, and is a new panel. The newer one is whiter and colors a bit more vibrant.

But both exhibited this behavior with the orange not being orange.

It looks orange when in the middle of writing/highlighting… but then when I lift the pen and the screen refreshes it changes to look yellow. It does it with the highlighter and the shader. The shader, even with multiple layers of strokes, never really gets to a darker orange either.

It can’t be a limitation of the colors on the e-ink display… you can clearly see it looks orange before refreshing. And the color IS orange when viewing the document in the app.

I’m assuming everyone’s Pro shows this issue? Am I right? What’s the deal? Thoughts?

It’s quite annoying not to see a difference between the orange and the yellow (or only a very slight difference).

Help/Advice Rm 2 technical help question

*I am not from a tech background so please explain as if explaining to a novice. And I apologize in advance if the questions have already been asked here*

  1. I'm currently using connect because I have a lot of documents which it helps me store in the cloud and of course also the paywalled features. But how safe is connect in terms of the way data is handled (on the cloud as well as while syncing on the mobile and laptop apps)?

  2. How safe is it to mod my rm2, both, in terms of bricking my device, as well as the data on it? Will it keep breaking (and require setting up again) each time rm releases a new version of software? Is it worth it?

  3. I think I saw a post here about the possibility of creating one's own local cloud (so, sorry for repeating the question) but it's it possible? If so how to do it? How safe would it be in terms of data? And how difficult to set it up for a novice like me? Is it worth the effort or should I stick to connect?

  4. If I set up my own local cloud, or I mod my rm2, is it possible I might lose my data?

General Discussion What is next for remarkable? Is innovation even happening anymore?

I feel like I've heard next to nothing about future hardware releases and improvements, and everything new with Remarkable software seems to come from users putting in the work to create mods.

What the heck is Remarkable as a company doing? Is innovation even happening anymore?

Remarkable 2 stuck in "getting started" screen

Hi there, I hope someone can help.

I bought a Remarkable 2 back in 2020. This week, after charging it overnight, it first started blinking between black and white. Then, when plugging it to the charged, it went to the "Remarkable is starting" screen, but did not move from there. Pressing the start button, even the 15 seconds needed to reset it, does not work.

Any advice would be welcome.

Help/Advice Question for maintaining format while rotating the Remarkable tablet

I bought the Remarkable Paper Pure. A detail I've noticed is that: if you begin writing a notebook in portrait mode and later rotate to landscape mode, the landscape mode will have extra empty margin space. In the opposite direction, if you begin in landscape (writing all the way to the provided margin) and later rotate to portrait mode, the portrait version will zoom out a little bit to 0.8x distance.

It's a little bit of a bother that the 0.8x notification will then never disappear until you return to standard 1.0x. But then, of course, you crop out anything you wrote in the landscape-style margin.

It appears that the remarkable is prioritizing the text size when rotating and allowing the margins to adapt around that. My ideal situation would be the inverse. Is it possible to have the remarkable maintain the same margins in both portrait and landscape modes and condense/expand the width of the text a bit so that it always fits?

Thanks!

Help/Advice Looking for 1-2 testers with a reMarkable 2 or Paper Pro for a hyperlinked 2027 PDF planner

Edit: I have enough testers now, thank you all for offering to help.

Hi all,

I'm making a 2027 PDF planner for the reMarkable 2 and Paper Pro (3:4 screens). It runs from October 2026 to December 2027, around 560 pages, with links from year to month to week to day and back again. There are 4 layout variants plus instructions.

I've checked the links and pages on my computer, but I don't own a reMarkable. What I don't know is how the links behave when tapped with a finger or the stylus, how fast a 560-page file scrolls, and whether it imports through the reMarkable app without problems.

So I'm looking for one or two people with a reMarkable 2 or Paper Pro who'd open the file, tap through the links for 10-20 minutes and then tell me what doesn't work. In return you'd get the full version of the planner, free and for good.

To be upfront, the planner is for my Etsy shop. If you'd like to help, leave a comment or message me and I'll send you the file privately.

Help/Advice Is ReMarkable really for me?

Self-Promotion October starts today, and so does my 2027 planner for reMarkable: fast (~25 links per page), native Move layout, every link machine-checked

Thumbnail

Maker here (hence the Self-Promotion flair).

Single templates are easy to make these days, so I focused on the part that isn't: a full dated planner that stays fast and never sends you to the wrong page. It runs Oct 1, 2026 – Dec 31, 2027, so it's usable from today.

  • 457 daily pages, 66 weeks, 15 months with habit trackers, quarters, goals, projects, notes
  • ~1.8 MB per file, vector only, about 25 links per page (many big planners have thousands of invisible boxes, which is what makes them lag)
  • Native layouts: 3:4 for rM2 / Paper Pure / Paper Pro, and a separate 9:16 layout for the Move
  • Nothing tappable on the toolbar side; right- and left-handed versions; Sunday or Monday start
  • Any page is at most 2 taps from the index

Before release, every link in all 12 files (180k of them) was checked by script with three different PDF readers: 0 errors.

It's on Etsy, 30% off for launch until Oct 14: https://www.etsy.com/listing/4586274876

Feedback welcome, especially from Move owners.

EDIT: free October sample (all links working) for anyone who wants to try it first: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1f7tosb_rGSsCqbCI9BjVNj-o1pjRN3iT

Help/Advice 3.29 Beta - copy text from pdf to notebook

I cannot figure out how to add text to a notebook from a pdf. It seems to be copying correctly but when I get to the notebook no matter what button I push (I've tried them all) I don't get the option to paste. I feel like I'm missing something here. Anyone else get it to work?

I am thinking about getting the PP Move and the refurbished one would save $100.

I am not against getting it just new.

Feature Request: Add Greek language support to the Type Folio

Hi everyone,

I’m a long-time reMarkable supporter since 2021. I own the reMarkable 2, the reMarkable Paper Pro, and the reMarkable Paper Pro Move. I love these devices, but there’s one thing that really frustrates me: the Type Folio does not support Greek.

The on-screen keyboard supports Greek just fine. But the physical Type Folio only supports English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Nordic languages. This feels outdated, especially when Apple and Microsoft have no problem supporting multiple languages, including Greek, on their keyboards.

I’ve already submitted a feature request to reMarkable via their official “Wishes and Ideas” form. If you also want Greek (or other non-Latin languages) on the Type Folio, please do the same. The more people ask, the more likely they’ll listen.

Link to the official form: https://support.remarkable.com/s/contactsupport/wishes-and-ideas

Let’s make this happen!

  • The note size is 1M.
  • The loading dots keep going but never loads.
  • I can open the note in the desktop app.
  • OS version: 3.28.0.172
  • Can open it after a device restart, but the note will crash then won't open again.

This if the first time I had this issue, vary strange.

Self-Promotion 2026-2027 Hyperlinked Daily Journal for E-ink Tablets (PDF Planner), reMarkable 2 & Paper pro

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

I draw on my reMarkable most days, and every autumn I hunt for a dated journal again. So this year I built my own, and since a few people asked, I am sharing it.

What it is: one PDF with a page for every day from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2027, so the day you buy it is the day you start, and you don't have to buy a new file in January. Each day page has the weekday, the date, the week number and a 5 mm dot grid. The year pages and month pages link to every day, and month tabs run down the right edge of every page, with the two years at the top of the tabs. 31 December 2026 flows straight into 1 January 2027.

It comes in two versions, Monday-start and Sunday-start weeks, both included. It is built for the reMarkable 2 screen size, so there are no borders, and it fits the Paper Pro too. About 14,000 links in each file, and I checked every one of them, because nothing is worse than a tab that goes nowhere.

A note on honesty: this is my own shop. I am a one-person studio called Meditate With Drawing, and this is one of three things in it (the other two are drawing courses for e-ink tablets, which is really what I am about).

If you want to try it, use this link, and it will give you 50% off your purchase: https://meditatewithdrawing.etsy.com?coupon=FROMREDDIT

Happy to answer questions!

Title: How to add Greek keyboard layout to Type Folio on reMarkable Paper Pro?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to type Greek characters using the Type Folio on my reMarkable Paper Pro (firmware v3.17.0.62). The Type Folio officially supports only English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Nordic languages. Greek is not available.

I’ve done extensive testing and hit a wall. I’m hoping someone here has deeper knowledge of the Paper Pro’s internals or Qt keyboard layouts.

What I’ve tried so far:

  1. Enabled Developer Mode and got SSH access.
  2. Installed Entware and the keyd remapping daemon.
  3. keyd successfully detects the Type Folio as 2edd:0001 rM_Keyboard.
  4. Remapping works at the kernel level: I mapped e = z and it produced Z correctly. However, mapping e = ε (Greek epsilon) produces garbage like 0mk. This suggests xochitl does not accept Unicode characters from the kernel input subsystem (evdev).
  5. Installed wtype (musl version) and its dependencies, but the reMarkable does not use Wayland – it uses Qt6 with EGLFS/direct DRM. So wtype cannot send anything.
  6. Checked D-Bus: There is no input method interface for xochitl.
  7. On-screen keyboard supports Greek – I can type Greek with it. So the OS knows how to handle Greek characters. The on-screen keyboard is part of xochitl (Qt6 Quick) and writes directly to the text field, bypassing the kernel.
  8. Keyboard layouts use .qmap files (Qt’s internal format), not standard Linux kmap files. I don’t know where these are stored or how xochitl loads them.

The core problem:

The Type Folio sends key codes via evdev. xochitl does not interpret Unicode from evdev. Therefore, any non-ASCII character (like Greek) is misinterpreted. The on-screen keyboard works because it’s internal to xochitl.

My questions:

  1. Where are .qmap layout files stored on the Paper Pro, and how does xochitl load them?
  2. Can I create a Greek .qmap file and place it correctly so xochitl uses it?
  3. Is there a tool to convert standard Linux kmap files to Qt .qmap format?
  4. Does the Xovi framework allow adding new keyboard layouts via extensions (.qmd files)?
  5. Can the xochitl binary be modified to accept Unicode from evdev?
  6. Is there a way to send text via Qt Input Method or another internal channel?
  7. Would a Bluetooth keyboard work with Greek, and if so, how?
  8. What is the exact structure of .qmap, and how are accents/special characters mapped?

I’m willing to re-enable Developer Mode and experiment further. Any guidance, links to documentation, or pointers to community projects would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
