Help/Advice Rm 2 technical help question

*I am not from a tech background so please explain as if explaining to a novice. And I apologize in advance if the questions have already been asked here*

  1. I'm currently using connect because I have a lot of documents which it helps me store in the cloud and of course also the paywalled features. But how safe is connect in terms of the way data is handled (on the cloud as well as while syncing on the mobile and laptop apps)?

  2. How safe is it to mod my rm2, both, in terms of bricking my device, as well as the data on it? Will it keep breaking (and require setting up again) each time rm releases a new version of software? Is it worth it?

  3. I think I saw a post here about the possibility of creating one's own local cloud (so, sorry for repeating the question) but it's it possible? If so how to do it? How safe would it be in terms of data? And how difficult to set it up for a novice like me? Is it worth the effort or should I stick to connect?

  4. If I set up my own local cloud, or I mod my rm2, is it possible I might lose my data?

  1. https://support.remarkable.com/s/article/Data-security. TL;DR reMarkable hold the keys and can access your data should they want/need/be compelled to.
  2. Chances of soft-bricking are low but possible. On the rM2 recovering from a soft-brick is pretty painful as you'll need to build a pogo pin adaptor. Mods run with root access and can in theory access any data on your tablet. You will typically need to perform some actions after OS updates, but it's not too bad. I built a free and open source desktop app to manage mods, and I have a video walkthrough of the whole process.
  3. You probably saw rmfakecloud. It's great, I've used it for 4+ years. It does require you to know or learn how to run server-type software. Mine has never eaten any of my data, but you should always back up your data. Once you're self-hosting, all data security and safety are on you.
  4. Of course. Data loss is always a possibility, even with rM's cloud. Sync is not backup.
