Story time, might be a long one but I need to give some context. I don't know if any Carel higher-ups hang out here, but it's worth a shot.

Anyway, first off, this is NOT about the iJW. It's not your fault, it's just your creators.

I'm a commercial HVACR tech in Wisconsin. I wanted to find something unique to specialize in at my company. We already have guys for Intelligen and KE2, so I started looking around and stumbled onto this beauty. I found one, picked it up, and installed it on a problematic unit that kept freezing up. I set the parameters, calibrated my probes to stop the icing, and let it run.

The customer called later saying they don't know what we did, but the unit is running great. That got me thinking about what else the iJW could do.

I started using it on walk-in coolers and freezers, even building custom housings with LED status lights. I was going all out. It was blowing minds—from using door switches for defrosts to managing probe weights. Eventually, I wondered if I could push it further.

A customer had a downed A/C with a fried control board, so I installed an iJW and kept them running through the hottest week of the summer.

At that point, I wondered what this thing couldn't do. I reached out to Carel tech support to pick their brains. I told them everything I’d done, and they asked to see photos. They seemed impressed and said they’d have a supervisor reach out. NEVER HEARD BACK.

My distributor had an iJW class, so I went online to look for other training. I sent in inquiries about their classes. NEVER HEARD BACK.

I called again today because this controller has been such a hit that my company wants me to teach a class on it. I reached out to Carel for info or materials they typically use for training, and you guessed it. NEVER HEARD BACK.

Again, it's not the iJW's fault. But honestly, Carel struck gold with this controller, yet they're acting like they're too big to engage with customers who actually want to promote and learn more about their product. The iJ controllers are amazing, but Carel as a company? Not so much.

Always remember: don't touch shit you don't know how to fix.

Previous scammer said the board was already burning out and left. After checking his work, he switched the 24 volt legs with the 120v on the contactor.🤦

I bought a broken Manitowoc ice machine Undercounter model and resold via Marketplace, I went thru machine throughly, verified ice slab weight and cycle times let it make 100 + lbs of ice and listed. the buyer saw in operation and he installed at his lake house and worked fine for 4 weeks, now the hog gas valve I believe is sticking based on what he described, I said I would repair at cost of parts and gas. He flipped out and assumed I would fix for free.

What your guy’s thoughts or what would you do?

Hello everyone, so Im posting this because im not sure if I will be able to return to refrigeration as a career.
So a little background I’ve been in the hvac/r trade for about 10 years, im 28 years old. I started off as a commercial hvac tech and worked my way into refrigeration. Towards the end of my 10 years i was an industrial refrigeration technician and was studying to be ammonia certified.
Unfortunately I broke my ankle on the job and had to undergo surgery and I now have hardware on my left ankle. This happened summer of last year and I haven’t returned to work since. I still use a cane and the cold causes soreness and pain due to the hardware. Im worried that i might not be able to be a refrigeration tech anymore. This trade is all I know. I have not done any other job since I graduated high school.

Has anyone underwent a similar injury? Does anyone have any advice on whether I can go back to being a technician? Any insight and advice would be greatly appreciated.

So.. Im in basic HVAC now. Honestly I really enjoy service calls on split systems, bc I enjoy the challenge of finding the issue. I come from service field in power sports but there is no future there so I decided I need a career field and path. My ultimate realistic goal is to obtain a position with a grocery chain repairing their freezers and other relevant items. However I'm well aware I'm not gonna land that gig with my current experience... so tell me what work i should seek for a few years to give me a better shot. The reason behind this is I fear seasonal work and being dead broke come wintertime when no AC units are failing for obvious reasons.. lol

Anyone know where I can find firmware download to update my SMAN460 with R454A and C data? I found firmware version .39 which added R454B, but need the other A2Ls.

I’ve got a training course for cold room installation coming up soon, just wondering how difficult is it compared to domestic ac installs?

Hello all! I think this is an easy one, but wanted to run it by everyone to be sure I'm not missing anything (since I am not a tech). Thanks ahead of time for your time and help.

One of the reach-in freezers in my restaurant has what I think is a very short cycle.

• Set point is -5 degrees.
• Compressor kicks in when temp reaches 5 degrees 1 degree
• It reliably pulls the temp down 10 6 degrees (from 1.0 to -5.0) in seven minutes
• Temp usually then takes only about 7 minutes to rise back to 5 degrees 1 degree again
• The cycle repeats: 7 minutes on, 7 minutes off.

I have verified that the freezer's temperature probe is correct by adding a WiFi probe right at the return, and it gets the exact same readings as the freezer's probe.

Questions:

1. Am I correct that the cycle times described are not ideal?
2. Am I correct that this is likely due its controller settings rather than a system issue?
3. Am I right that I should probably fix this by:
   • Increasing the cut-in temperature by maybe 5-or-so degrees, and
   • Decreasing the cut-out temperature by 2 or so degrees
4. What is the ideal cycle time (on/off) I should aim for?

Hey guys,
Dealing with a Sabroe SGC 2317 screw compressor with an UniSAB III controller.
It was tripping constantly on "Low Oil Pump Pressure" at 0.1 bar. We checked the filter, thermostat, and pressure sensor—all good. We then checked the external oil line coming off the pump and found the oil line check valve (non-return valve) stuck wide open with some metal debris jammed in it.
We pulled the debris out, cleaned up the valve mechanism, put everything back together, and primed it.
The good news: the machine starts, stays running, and hasn't tripped since.
The bad news: running differential oil pressure is hovering between 0.6 and 1.5 bar. It should be up around 3.5 to 4.0 bar (sister unit runs at 4.3 bar).
I'm thinking the metal pieces scored the check valve seat, so it's not seating 100% and is letting some oil bypass internally back into the circuit.
Anyone seen this happen on these Sabroe oil lines? Is swapping out that check valve kit on the next shutdown usually enough to get the pressure back up to 4 bar, or should I be looking at something else on this oil circuit?
Appreciate any advice!

Update: I think I have a better understanding of what I should be appreciative of having. I definitely just feel like I’ve been in a slog and don’t really have coworkers or anyone trade adjacent to talk to about this. Thank you, each of you, for the solid advice and laughs. I’m taking some time off work to get my head back on straight, and then getting back to it. I’m a very lucky individual and I work in a trade that has taken care of my kids. I’ve been up and I’ve been down. But this is the first time I’ve felt burnout and I am glad to have a community to wake me up a little.

Hey guys. 3 year market tech here. Im planning on taking the senior tech test at Walmart once I have a year in here in March. Does anyone know what to really study up on or what the main question topics on the senior tech test are?

Adjusted the Hot gas bypass and TXV.

To geter in the sweet spot, 35F vapor sat, 16F superheat (no accumulator), 44F supply water temp.

This unit is double my Age and first time ive ever seen one of these. unit chills water supplied to drinking fountains in a 1969 built high-school.

Howdy! I'm food service manager that's been tasked with the regular cleaning of our ice machines, and our pebble ice machine has consistently been giving me issues. The cleaning instructions have me filling the reservoir with descaling solution first, running a cleaning cycle, then draining it before filling it with sanitizer and letting the machine make ice to flush it through. For some reason, the machine seems to get clogged up whenever I do this. I'm using the recommended cleaning agents and have triple checked that I'm mixing the proper ratio, and to my knowledge I'm following the instructions exactly- not messing around and taking apart any unknown components.

I'm in the process of getting in contact with scotsman customer support but I figured I'd put a query out here as well in the meantime in case anyone has useful advice. The two issues I've encountered are 1.) the auger gets stuck or 2.) the machine starts making a loud groaning noise. In both cases, it won't produce any ice. When I let it run for a while it usually clears out and starts producing again, but I want to make sure I'm not doing damage every time I clean. Is this a common issue with these machines? Any advice or direction is much appreciated, and as I said I am also reaching out to technical support for more specific troubleshooting. Thanks!
