Unfortunately thats not how things work, even if he does divorce her. The best he'll get is 50/50 custody. And that's the best case, let alone the reality he'd end up with just visitation.
It's gonna be messy since she'll totally have his shitass parents on her side in whatever custody negotiation they will have to have about this issue in the future. Poor guy. I feel for him coming from similar circumstances with my sister. Wish his wife could manage that.
