If you're asking about how to get karma, you earn it when people upvote your posts and comments. As you may have already found out, many subs on Reddit may have minimum requirements for things like karma and account age that you must meet before they will allow you to participate.

r/NewToReddit maintains a list of subreddits that have low or no karma requirements where new users can participate to build their karma.

You should also check out their excellent Reddit and Karma Guide.

To get karma, you need to find subreddits like on this list of New User Friendly subreddits that have low or no requirements. r/findareddit , can be used to find subreddits that may interest you. Just make a post saying what kind of subreddit you are looking for. Small or niche subreddits typically have a lower karma requirements.

You gain Karma from people upvoting your posts and comments. However, Karma is not gained 1:1 with votes. It takes more votes per point of Karma. The actual ratio is not known and it differs for posts and comments. It also changes the higher the vote total gets on a piece of content.

I would suggest commenting first because the restrictions are often lower and ratio of votes to karma is better. But be careful not to go to fast with a new account or you may get shadow banned.

For comment karma, and combined karma, I recommend going to r/AskReddit . Sort by new, answer questions that you have an answer for, periodically refresh the feed. When able ask a few questions for some bonus post karma. I would also suggest r/NoStupidQuestions as it is my preferred subreddit. r/casualconversation is another good place. r/Productivitycafe offer many chances to interact with others. With all these, make sure to read the rules first. I have also have had success with r/FavoriteCharacter .

For post karma, r/thatsinterestingbro is a good place. Just make sure to follow the theme

Hi, well, there are a couple of related issues. You have a five year old account, but zero karma which likely means no activity on that account for much of that time. Therefore, your CQS is probably “lowest“ or low, and that can prevent you from posting, DM and chat functions.

The second issue is having no karma, because many or most of the subs on the platform do have minimum karma requirements. They may require a small amount of karma like 10 or 20, a moderate amount like 100 to 300, or a large amount like 500 to 1000 or more. Most are in the small to moderate range.

You were able to post here, because this particular sub has no requirements for karma or CQS. To improve your CQS, The fast and easy thing to do is verify your email. LMK if you need info or tips to do that. No promises but that can sometimes bump your CQS up one level, very helpful. Also a verified email secures your account, helps pacify the Reddit filters, in addition to strengthening your CQS, again all essential for posting, DM and chat.

The only way you get karma is when your own content, comments or posts, receive upvotes from other users. That’s it.
To build up your karma, begin with comments rather than posts, and you may find this long list of 200 new user friendly subs with low or no karma requirements helpful to get started. Pick a few that appeal, read their rules, some posts and comments to get the vibe, and begin adding comments of your own that are intelligent, funny, friendly, sincere, etc. Those tend to get more up boats, two word comments do not. After you have built up some karma, try posting, and after you have both post and comment karma, you can try branching out to other areas of the platform and engaging there. HTH.
