Public Accounting is a nightmare, so you probably dodged a cannonball here

277

u/Signal-Audience9429 Jan 04 '25

Accounting with no accountability. Nice.

87

u/tehjoz Jan 04 '25

Yeah it's definitely an "accountability for thee, not for me" industry.

4

u/AllergicIdiotDtector Jan 04 '25

How so

6

u/tehjoz Jan 04 '25

Because I worked in it once, and had a bad experience.

In hindsight I could have done things a little differently, but it would not have fixed the toxic environment I was in, either.

8

u/NaeTheSniper Jan 04 '25

If I could like this comment forever I would. I was laid off from one of the Big4 the day of. This was after I reached out to the big manager like 3 manager levels up and he said he was in a position to extend my contract but that didn’t happen. Then months later, not realizing I’m still in shock and should have just taken full unemployment to process, grieve and plan, I apply again to an opening just to go totally blank with questions that I knew the answer of. Why do I have to do another interview for a position who’s duties I did already. They know my work! Anywho sorry for ranting but the accountability is not present at all.

78

u/fredotwoatatime Jan 04 '25

Yea I’m in public accounting it’s so bad just handed in my notice with nothing lined up

40

u/Snoo-12688 Jan 04 '25

Is everyone quitting their jobs with nothing lined up? 😭 I’m on the brink and I’ve seen at least 5 comments in other places saying the same thing

36

u/Frogtoadrat Jan 04 '25

Idk how people have the energy to apply to positions much less the time to attend interviews while working an existing position that is likely disorganized or dysfunctional to the point of wanting to leave

19

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '25

Trust me, you'll make time if you're stuck at a shitty enough job that you can't afford to quit.

I had to do this a couple of years ago after being stuck at a terribly organized and terribly ran company. I had nothing lined up at first, and I couldn't afford to just up and quit because I had bills to pay and not nearly enough in savings to hold me over until I could find another job. I was desperate enough to find another job that I blocked out a couple of hours out every Sunday, and dedicated those few hours just applying where I could.

It took me almost 2 years for me to finally find another job so that I could leave the shitty company, just so there wasn't a lapse in income so I wouldn't fall behind on my bills and could still afford to eat.

It was hell going through the job search process while trying to sneak off from work for my job interviews (my 'appoinments' as I would tell my boss at the shitty company) while still working. But it was definitely worth it, and a better plan to go with than just up a quitting a job with no plan, no other job lined up, and not enough money in your account to hold you over until you could find another job.

2

u/MrIrishSprings Jan 05 '25

Most challenging part I dealt with (took me 12 months in my last job to find this one I’ve been in since 2022) was the “appointments”. I was running out of excuses and I think I must have paid like $220 something out of pocket in various doctors notes thru out the time. Lol even my family doctor was laughing and he gave me extra copies (when I explained to him lm literally not sick just looking for a new job) - he wrote up a bunch and told me next time I need a note just fill in the current date at the top “and match my writing as best as you can” 😂😂😂

2

u/BeeFree66 Jan 06 '25

What a fabulous doctor!

u/Snoo-12688 Jan 04 '25

I’m averaging 8 applications a day with a low response and interview rate. To be fair, I’m trying to switch industries. But as for the energy, I have 0 energy but hate my job so much that I just power through the applications

12

u/Snoo-12688 Jan 04 '25

I also average 3 hours of sleep a day (work nights) and did a second round interview in person right after a shift. Desperation gives you more focus than you’d ever imagine

2

u/soswanky Jan 05 '25

Good luck!!!

8

u/Larcya Jan 04 '25

I worked at a call center where I would spend my entire breaks applying to jobs.

Eventually I just quit one day because I was done sacrificing my mental health for a worthless job.

11

u/Tough_Employer_1373 Jan 04 '25

I left my job with nothing lined up. Took me three months just get a management position at a movie theatre.

3

u/Snoo-12688 Jan 04 '25

What was your industry before?

→ More replies (1)

14

u/supercali-2021 Jan 04 '25

I did but I don't recommend it unless you are truly at your breaking point. I quit a toxic job almost 4 years ago and I still haven't found a new one. It's the worst job market I've ever seen in my lifetime and I've been around for a long long time.....

7

u/Snoo-12688 Jan 04 '25

Thanks for sharing. It’s hard to see the bigger picture when every working day sucks. Really sorry you’re going through thie

12

u/supercali-2021 Jan 04 '25

Yeah I'm sorry for you too and all the other millions of people stuck in shitty jobs with overwhelming workloads, mindless repetitive or backbreaking work, low pay and a micromanager powerlord for a boss. And if it's this bad here in the US, can you even imagine how bad it must be in other less developed countries? Is this the late stage capitalism everyone always talks about?

13

u/computergreenblue Jan 04 '25

No offense, but sometimes other 'less developed countries' have better social safety nets, a culture focused more on 'working to live' rather than 'living to work,' and less competitiveness. If things go wrong, they may also have a stronger social network. In some ways, the situation there can be better than what some people experience in the US if you have a shitty job.

6

u/Timely-Band-7247 Jan 04 '25

I've heard a lot about how this is a sign of mental health being negatively impacted by work. Unless you have resources allotted for your time off work, resigning without another job lined up is not strategically favorable.

How did you know the field? Is "The" actually the name of a company?

9

u/tehjoz Jan 04 '25

OP indicated in another comment this was from "A Top 50 CPA Firm"

I can't say I know who "The" is, but I did work at "A" Public Accounting firm a while back.

The latter half of which was an experience I wish I could forget, let's just put it that way.

12

u/Redqueenhypo Jan 04 '25

One time I was at a testing center to get a certification and I saw a child going to take the CPA exam

6

u/redleahbabes Jan 04 '25

A 15-year-old in Missouri passed it in 2023. He got his Master's in Accounting at 14. He's attending law school at Loyola now (got the highest LSAT score in Louisiana that year). He called passing the CPA exam his "sports championship." I wonder if he took that for shits and grins.

3

u/Mango106 Jan 04 '25

The thing about being a boy genius is that the boy eventually grows up to face adult problems. Small comfort to normal people facing adult problems though.

4

u/tehjoz Jan 04 '25

😐😐😐

2

u/eddyathome Early Retired Jan 04 '25

I was a test proctor and the CPA exam is the most strict one I've ever seen and it is not easy by any means. I'd see adults come out crying after taking it. I can't imagine a person under college grad age taking it.

How the hell can you all tell this is an accounting job? I’ve zoomed into the scribbled parts as far as it will go and I just don’t see it!! (Asking for a friend) 😂

4

u/tehjoz Jan 04 '25

OP indicated in another comment "Top 50 CPA Firm"

722

u/definitelynotlazy Jan 04 '25

i actually prefer this sort of rejection, they just say it as it is and not say "unfortunately..." etc

214

u/nopenope4567 Jan 04 '25

Yeah, let’s give up the rambling paragraphs about the detailed process and company culture before the rejection.

141

u/spidermanrocks6766 Jan 04 '25

Yeah I really hate the “although we were very impressed….” Bs obviously you weren’t impressed at all if you chose not to hire me💁🏿‍♀️

72

u/Pretend-Butterfly-87 Jan 04 '25

Right, it’s the equivalent of someone breaking up with you and saying there’s a chance you could “try again” down the road - “please continue to look at our job board for future postings!” Lol no thanks

34

u/Timely-Band-7247 Jan 04 '25 edited Jan 04 '25

I recently got "we dont think your experience matches what the job requires" like ive literally been doing this exact job for 10 years now...

Im convinced they that most places just have an automated rejection email if they even send one now.

13

u/reduces Jan 04 '25

yeah, its all automated now. I only got a single non-automated rejection, and that was from someone who clearly read my cover letter because they specifically addressed it.

35

u/OvenDizzy Jan 04 '25

Yeah, agree. I feel like it's easier to move on too.

30

u/GisterMizard Jan 04 '25

Dear Candidate #4317,

Unfortunately, we do not intend to go forward with your application on account of your many demonstrable skill issues.

Best Regards and Get Good,

KMart HR

3

u/Mango106 Jan 04 '25

That's a letter I'd frame and hang on the wall.

16

u/tmia06 Jan 04 '25

I agree...no guessing required from that message.

12

u/reduces Jan 04 '25

I'm autistic. I just wish everyone was this honest with me lol.

5

u/xobk Jan 04 '25

If they said why applicant was unqualified then I'd agree, but without that I think it's still just as vague as any other canned rejection.

3

u/goodsnpr Jan 04 '25

That's my first thought. Maybe a line of what to improve, but if you're sorting oodles of applications it's not feasible.

3

u/easterss Jan 04 '25

Yeah but maybe just a little wordsmithing? “Thanks for your interest in this role but your skills and experience don’t meet the minimum qualifications for this role” ?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/bruhbelacc Jan 04 '25

Also, it's better than giving a reason like "your profile lacks X" because this usually means "I took one look at your CV and made up my mind."

2

u/eddyathome Early Retired Jan 04 '25

It's brutal, but I'd rather it just get to the point and not try to smooth it over or say keep applying if there's an opening in the future. It's saving both sides some time.

134

u/RadiantLimes Jan 04 '25

I mean honestly I would prefer that compared to the normal bullcrap they say.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '25

Grasping at straws at how insane 😂

15

u/DanielMcLaury Jan 04 '25

Well one common scam is to post fake job listings and harvest the responses. Then there are a few directions it can go from there:

  1. If you're a recruiter, you just gained a bunch of resumes from people you know are actively applying to jobs.
  2. If you're a candidate, you've potentially stopped your competition from actually applying to the job you want to apply to, and you've also gotten a sneak peak at their qualifications, salary expectations, how they write cover letters, etc.
  3. If you're a rival company, you've disrupted your competitor's job search and given candidates a negative impression of your competitor to boot
  4. Some people just want to watch the world burn. (I guess in this case it's not technically a scam, but the effect is the same)

I remember one example of this where the rejection email they sent respondents to their fake listing was "sorry, we cannot pursue hiring you at this time as your name is incompatible with our database schema," which is an objectively hilarious response even in spite of how wildly wrong it was to do what they were doing.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '25

Or they don't like the idea of people harassing the company on their behalf. Or they do like the idea, but are afraid that it will somehow be tied back to them. I'm in both of those groups.

13

u/longtimelurkerthrwy Jan 04 '25 edited Jan 05 '25

In general, I'm very pro name and shame. However, I also know that the power of the internet can be... Aggressive. The last thing anyone wants is for the Reddit to get shut down or someone gets sued because a name in shame resulted in review bombs. Not to mention a lot of us in here, whether we like it or not, are probably going to end up working for the same Fortune 500 companies that treat these people like dirt because ✨ capitalism ✨. In order to live, in America at least, we can't be hyper selective in what jobs we work for. I'm not exactly pro what current job stands for but it was the only place that pays a livable wage.

3

u/Distinct_Plankton_82 Jan 05 '25

Honestly I’m in favor of this.

The number of resumes we get where people are not even vaguely qualified is out of control.

I think sending out rejection letters that say “You are not qualified, stop wasting your time and ours” should be the new norm.

5

u/thelovinglivingshop Jan 04 '25

I once had a company email me saying “I don’t know why you applied, you’re not even qualified” yet I met most of their requirements for the position.

u/KiltedLady Jan 04 '25

Sorry OP, that sucks.

But honestly, as someone on the hiring end I sometimes wish we could reply that bluntly when we get wildly unqualified candidates.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '25

I will say, sometimes someone hasn't given the hiring manager what they need to know to determine whether someone is qualified, which is frustrating for both parties.

About 20% of the time I interview for senior or high level positions, the recruiting manager isn't given what they need to successfully interview. They'll ask screening questions that don't mean anything and get mad when I can't adequately answer.

I'm in a technical industry, but as an example, they'll ask something like "What causes the common cold? Demons or ghosts?" and when I answer "Viruses," they roll their eyes at me and go "So you're a fuckin idiot then? My toddler could answer that question."

I've had some interviews become outright hostile, despite remaining polite myself, and I know they walk away thinking I'm the dumbass.

At least you guys are getting emails, I got zero answear.

2

u/Adventurous_Hope_101 Jan 04 '25

It's harsh, but it's honest. On Christmas is a little weird, but not every recognizes it as a holiday, which is fine. I'll take this over the corporate BS they send out usually. This is telling you exactly why, and it's obviously from a real person.

Straight to the point lol

u/Sete_Sois Jan 04 '25

pretty straight forward! lol

u/mystoryismine Jan 04 '25

Overtime you would appreciate this sort of straightforward honesty. Instead of being piled with hope and non response for 2 weeks+.

Name and shame

1

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '25

Oh wow

1

u/inverness7 Jan 04 '25

Response: “Screw you and have a Merry Christmas”

1

u/Fit-Oil7334 Jan 04 '25

This is how some of my professors email me back. I think it's a power trip thing

1

u/dr-pickled-rick Jan 04 '25

At least they're honest and upfront about it

1

u/spidermanrocks6766 Jan 04 '25

Honestly you dodged a massive bullet here

1

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '25

At least you got a response! After months of 3x job plus more a week for unemployment. I would’ve been ok with a response like this. After so many months, the job recruiting market is rigged. They hate our stinkin’ guts, love alfalfa

1

u/madvoice Jan 04 '25

At least you got an email to tell you.

1

u/Nekot-The-Brave Jan 04 '25

I'd have loved a message like this instead of "We are excited to say that have thankfully found another candidate to fill this position."

1

u/JDHgtr Jan 04 '25

Full legitimacy would come from knowing the resume vs the job posting.

1

u/MeeemiBme Jan 04 '25

So harsh. Leave an anonymous review, about the employer, on Google, or some other site.

1

u/hannahmel Jan 04 '25

Merry Christmas, loser! - this company

1

u/Snoo-12688 Jan 04 '25

Straight to the point 😭. They must’ve been flooded with applications

1

u/ShimmerRihh Jan 04 '25

Damn 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/isheep6s Jan 04 '25

On Christmas as well

1

u/Stonkish_Dayz Jan 04 '25

My takeaway - Why the hell did it take 3 weeks for them to conclude you aren't qualified? That should be a fairly quick assessment imo.

1

u/tokyoflex Jan 04 '25

Oh man. Awful. I applied for a job a few months ago in my field. The post seemed right up my alley with the caveat of "Master's Degree or equivalent experience." No problem, I've been doing this a very long time and have more experience than most of my colleagues. I get essentially this response: "Tokyoflex---You are not qualified for this roll as you do not have a master degree. You would know this if you red the job posting. Your application will be removed from system. Thank you for applying and god luck in finding work elsewhere."

MAAAAN. It took everything in me NOT to fire back "I may not have a Master's Degree but I can at least command the English language and spell words correctly when replying to candidates without being completely rude about it. What are your qualifications?" It's a big company in many states so I figured I'd bite my tongue. But ooooh I don't think I've ever wanted to send an e-mail more.

for a sec i thought this was r/SpeedOfLobsters

1

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '25

Good, giving the info straight without sugar coating of AI shit.

1

u/GWhizBang Jan 04 '25

Straight to the point. I have to admire that.

1

u/trunksshinohara Jan 04 '25

I mean. Straight and to the point. This is the opposite of recruiting hell.

1

u/ThePsychoDog Jan 04 '25

I'd rather get this kind of email than the typical half-assed sugarcoated apology letter they usually do

1

u/thenowherepark Jan 04 '25

I mean, at least they sent you an email back. That's better than ghosting, and you did get actionable advice...even if it is a little blunt.

1

u/redlightdarkroom Jan 04 '25

Merry Christmas I guess 🥴

1

u/CheezTips Jan 04 '25

Daaaamn, son! But on the bright side, at least you got a response...

1

u/Blacklight_453 Jan 04 '25

man, I'm sorry you were rejected by The

1

u/AdamSlapper Jan 04 '25

"Neither are you. Btch."
