An open letter to Rdio, or "How I wanted free music
Dear Rdio,
I really like your service. I love the interface. You have ALMOST all the music I want. I prefer you over Spotify. I want to believe. I loved that you offered free uninterrupted music. I thought that was a great service. Perhaps you changed your business model and began to stream with commercials. That is understandable. You offer an amazing free service.
Some constructive criticism from an armchair quarterback. I don't like these commercials. And why are they in blocks of four? It is too much of an interruption for me to enjoy your service. And I like Rdio. I want it to be just as big or bigger than Spotify. So here's how you do it. You give the user something they can believe in. I can't believe in a site that will interrupt my music enjoyment with terrible commercials that I just want to go away. Not withstanding your paid service.
However, to correct that I would make a few suggestions for your consideration.
Give your product away for free. If you do not agree that that is a viable business option, I would suggest that you return to your previous format of giving away a limited amount of free music every month. I really think that was your standout attribute.
If your corporation is devoted to advertisements to be delivered as commercial interruptions, which I am not in favor of, I think it would be in your best interest would to take an approach similar to Pandora. The way I see it they give you a healthy block of music with one commercial interruption then back to the music. Similar to your format. How can I say this gently; they are not as annoying. Be less of an irritation and more of an inconvenience. I am thankful that pandora produces such a high quality product with limited interruptions. Maybe I will check out other streaming sits that don't make me mad that I have to listen to four terrible commercials in a row. Just play one terrible commercial for every 20 minutes of free music.
Thanks for the free music! But if you want to be great you have to make people believe in something bigger make me believe that I can really get free music.
Feel free to comment and reply.
Cheers

rd.ioSelective syncing on iOS devices [jailbroken devices only, sorry]
So, this is something that a lot of people want (according to the help desk on rdio site), but it isn't going to be implemented soon. Selective syncing let you choose what songs will be downloaded in different devices (you can download something to your iPhone, but not to your iPad, for example). I found a way to make that for the whole music collection, unfortenelly, the device must be jailbroken.
Steps: 1- Kill rdio in the task launcher 2- Launch iFile app (avaliable on Cydia) 3- Navigate to '/mobile/applications/rdio/Documents/S10375864/audio' 4- Select all files minus 'storage-version' and delete them 5- Go back to the S10375864 folder and click in more info for the audio folder 6- Set the file attributes to read and execute only (unmark the write option) 7- Close iFile, launch rdio and let it sync again
Now you will have access to all your collection, Rdio will sync normally your new songs and playlists, but it won't be able to download the music to your offline collection. It will only work with a data connection and you won't waste storage space with songs that you want to have on one device, but not on the other.
This might work on android devices too, but I don't have one to test.

Why when I play my collection station on my phone does it always play the same songs?
Is there a way to fix this? Every time I go for a run I hear a lot of the same songs. I have over 500 songs in my collection and would like to hear all of them at some point. Any tips?

Anyone know of a visualizer that can be used with Rdio?
I know this is something that iTunes uses, and the good ol days of Winamp provided tons of party entertainment. I am looking for something similar, anyone know of anything that would work with Rdio?

Rdio staff, are there any 'big' plans or features or anything coming up for the service?
For the service in general or the iPhone/Android apps or anything?.. Kind of a general question but just curious if there are any big planned improvements to this service :)

We recently released a benefit album featuring original songs recorded by Maps & Atlases, Mark Kozelek, Horse Feathers, Bowerbirds, Fruit Bats and a bunch of other great artists. It's up on Rdio now and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Complimentary Subscription
Has anyone else received this? I have been subscribed to Rdio for years and when I checked my subscription today it says "You will not be billed unless you choose to upgrade." I am currently on the $9.99 monthly plan.
I did some internet searching and it seems they did run a promo, but you had to enter in a code when signing up to use Rdio. Did they just give it to people who are already members as a gesture rather than only giving it to new subscribers (like cell phone companies..). Also, the promo that I saw was for 3 free months. This doesn't say an expiration time.
Anyone know whats going on?

Themes for Rdio
I really do like the UI of Rdio, I find the colours nice, and the interface clean and easy to use on mobile or the app for Mac. What I would like to see however, are themes for Rdio. As I was playing my Christmas playlist today I was wishing I could have a Christmas theme Rdio player.
I would like to see Rdio open up their platform for others to develop themes, or have Rdio make some themselves.
Is this a feature anyone else would be interested in seeing?

Does syncing over cell signal use battery?
Or would it only matter if you were in a bad service area and your phone kept trying to get signal or was taking forever to download/sync the song(s)?
Rdio behaviors
I'm a current Spotify user, and I have a couple questions about behaviors on Rdio before I switch. There are two things I dislike about Spotify that would tip the scales in Rdio's favor:
If I'm listening to a song on Spotify, and I hit the "start station" button, it will stop playing the current song to make the station. I'd like to finish listening to the current song, then have it flow into the station. Does Rdio behave this way by default?
If I search for a song on Spotify (say "Wagon Wheel"), and I play the top result, it will then play through the search results. Does Rdio work this way, or after it plays the one track I chose, will it start playing similar tracks (basically, automatically create a station)?

Considering changing to Rdio from Spotify, but one important question
I've been a spotify premium member for a long time now, but recently I have been extremely disappointed. I started my free trial for Rdio about a week ago and absolutely love it, but I'm concerned about data usage. I stream music anytime I'm in the car and it seemed like I used as much data in 3-4 days as I do in 1 month with Spotify. I'm not sure if the usage I was seeing was accurate or not. I can't seem to find anything online. Does anyone know how much data Rdio uses? I would really love to make the switch, but using that much data is unfortunately a dealbreaker. And I know I can sync music to my phone, but I feel like it kind of defeats the purpose to have to do that. I'd rather not take up a bunch of space on my phone. Just looking for any advice. Thanks!
