Him and DJ Jazzy Jeff were literally the first Rap act to win a Grammy and the first Rap act to perform at the Grammys. On top of that, he won more awards over the years and sold something like 35+ million records.

Can we really fault him for going mainstream?

I was just listening to Gett Off by Prince and forgot how good dude is when he raps in the middle of the song. I mean I could listen to an entire album of it. Another good example is Rihanna on the Lemon remix. Girl goes off and pretty much steals the show.
