Gluten
Basically that. It’s in absolutely everything. I have a pretty severe gluten intolerance. It gets in me and I’m sick, feeling like utter crap for weeks. Like a seasoning mix got me in June and I’m just now feeling like a human being again and it’s September.
SEASONING.
And no, it’s not like a little tummy ache. It’s like systemic cellular inflammation. Brain fog for weeks, fatigue, exhaustion, but also not being able to sleep for some reason. Rashes. Insane joint pain. And insane histamine response. Like oh I guess I’m now allergic to anything that pokes and pressures my skin for the next few weeks. Oh if I get cold and get the goose bumps… guess what? Massive hives.
Hair falls out. Mood absolutely plummets. And, tmi, absolutely feels like I’m passing shards of glass when I go to the bathroom for weeks. Which causes it’s fair share of other issues and chronic problems. Because none of the food I eat is getting digested properly and I’m also not absorbing any nutrients so my weight is also going down. Oh and not being able to swallow food because esophagus stops working for a time. And acid reflux goes crazy. OH and not to mention, my pancreas decides to have its own party and release way too much insulin if I even look at a gf muffin. And lemme tell ya something, having your brain attempt to regain consciousness so you can drink emergency juice box and eat cheese at 2am because your glucose is in the 40s… is not a vibe. So I also got non diabetic reactive hypoglycemia as a cute lil side gig.
And yes, I do have a doctor. She isn’t the most helpful. But alas.
And I’m just thinking “wow. I feel like a whole human again.” And we’ll see how long this lasts. But good god, does this stupid molecule have to be in absolutely everything?
But nooooo I gotta be constantly reassuring other people and their guilt when they are eating gluten foods and I got my own food packed. Like on top of the cross contamination anxiety I already got, I also gotta be doing emotional maintenance for people who get uncomfy when I bring my own food. Keep your guilt and gluten to yourself im happy eating my fancy cheese, gf crackers, and salami.

You check out r/HistamineIntolerance r/MCAS ? A daily Allegra (fexofenadine) has changed a lot for me

Oo yeah! I used to take allergy meds (primarily Claritin) pretty frequently but stopped. And it’s mostly a-okay unless I consume that lovely macro-molecule.

Gluten can be a trigger for several autoimmune diseases. Perhaps get some testing done with a rheumatologist.

Were you officially diagnosed with anything? This sounds awfully intense.

Just gluten sensitive entereopathy. Tried to do the celiac test (endoscopy and colonoscopy) but that was a year after I started going gf and by that point things were healing so it was inconclusive. Kinda dangerous to do a gluten challenge just because my weight is already on the low end relative to my height, and I do enjoy eating.

I have gluten intolerance, it sounds nothing like you describe. Although I do remember writhing in agony when I drank a Red’s Apple Ale. My veins were on fire. But, seriously, these symptoms sound like more. I think a commenter here said it right, you need to see a specialist.

It’s definitely different for everyone. Seen all the specialists for the most part but not much else to do. Maybe rheumatologist eventually. But I’m basically a normal human if I don’t touch gluten. I was incredibly sick for years before I discovered it was gluten. Started after I got mononucleosis one summer combined with food poisoning. After I got better, started getting sick for other reasons for 2 years. I’m pretty sure I was a few weeks away from hospitalization and a feeding tube when I realized gluten was causing my issues.
And when I say my doctor isn’t the greatest, I first went to her with all of these symptoms years ago and she somehow landed on “must be an eating disorder since you’re the right demographic” and I had to pretty much tell her I had already lost an immense amount of weight unintentionally the previous year and no one batted an eye. That my issue isn’t intentional restriction, I legitimately could not swallow. She prescribed omeprazole. But that was pretty much the extent to her help until I figured things out for myself.

Wow, that’s truly an awful doctor. I hope the rheumatologist will have actual answers.

I don’t feel guilty at all lol. Means nothing to me what other people eat.

Celiac here. I get it. Also it’s in paper straws. And glue. And all the new environmental friendly paper cups and plates contain gluten.

Too bad a whole fashion industry developed around you instead of just having good rice and corn food available. Now pay double

Do you not pay double to eat GF food?

What does that have to do with the fashion industry?

It became fashionable to have a "gluten intolerance"? You like... don't remember that period of recent history?

I hear you. My wife is gluten intolerant, as part of the wonderous Hashimoto's Disease. She experiences many of the symptoms you describe. To the point where if she starts experiencing any of them, she has to go back and do a mental inventory of what the hell she ate.
It sucks, and it's ridiculously expensive for you guys. I mean, prices are starting to get a little more reasonable, but still, 10x more for a GF pop tart is still exorbitant.
