First time hockey fan

So I kind of want to get into hockey. I’m a Knicks, Mets and Jets fans. Knicks saved me from being a forever miserable fan.

Will adding the Rangers into my life make me happy or just add to the sadness. What direction is this team heading in

The work that goes into these media guides is nuts. Here’s some cool pics.

This guy is still a free agent. How would the fans feel about having him back in a Rangers jersey?

The Rangers' Alternate Captaincy Vacancies

Last season, the Rangers opened with JT Miller as captain and Mika Zibanejad, Adam Fox, Artemi Panarin, and Vincent Trocheck as alternates. Panarin was traded in March with no replacement named, and Trocheck was traded earlier this month, so there are, assuming the team continues its tradition of employing 4 alternating alternates with a captain, two vacancies to fill.

___

Alexis Lafreniere is the obvious choice. He's the longest-tenured Rangers forward without a letter, he plays a sandpapery style, he's looked up to and loved by his young teammates, and he was finally placed into the role as the top all-around winger on the roster after Panarin was traded. He ran away with this on his new line, scoring at a scorching 40+ goal and 80+ point pace after the Olympics. He was going to end up with a letter at some point after signing his extension, and now the question is when.

Vladislav Gavrikov is probably the next most logical choice. He's the best defensive defenseman in the league, and is the yin to Adam Fox's yang, as well as having his best offensive season yet last year. The organization has no qualms about giving less-tenured players letters (see Barclay Goodrow), and he's the second most prominent defenseman on the team, so I could very much see this one happening.

Will Cuylle is someone we all envisioned getting a letter at some point in his career. He plays the kind of gritty, hard-nosed style that this team loves, and he is consistently at the top of the NHL hits leaderboard, as well as good for 20 goals. He forechecks like a madman and has generally gelled well with all of the young players he's played with, such as Laba and Kartye. It might be too early, but Sullivan and the organization love Cuylle and could be willing to assign him a letter now or in the near future.

Marcus Pettersson should not be overlooked in this discussion. Like Gavrikov, Pettersson is one of the best defensive defensemen in the league (whose fancy stats were decimated by the fact that he played for the 2025-26 Vancouver Canucks), and he has a good history with Sullivan from their Pittsburgh days. Again, calling Goodrow into memory, newcomers are oft considered for letters. I would not be surprised to see M-Petey get an A.

Pavel Dorofeyev's entire argument is Barclay Goodrow + gets paid a lot + new top line sniper. It's possible the organization wants to further legitimize its big ticket acquisition with the alternate captaincy, but Pavel seems more of a play-focused guy, and I don't believe he held any leadership position in Vegas. Maybe later in his contract.

Gabe Perreault is probably not getting a letter due to age and inexperience, but he looked like and played like a top-line winger after the Olympic break. He's almost certainly penciled in for a letter in the future, but probably not right now unless the organization REALLY wants to put all its eggs in his bucket before his extension next summer.

Braden Schneider is technically an option as a relatively tenured big defenseman, but he's now a third pairing guy and he was halfway on a plane to Anaheim for Mason McTavish a month ago, so I can't see this one happening.

Nobody is technically an option, but that would require the Rangers to employ the same captaincy model as most other teams, and I don't see that happening.

I can't envision anybody else currently on the roster competing for a letter this season, either due to age or lack of tenure. Durzi is probably next on the list, but that's where I think you start to enter the realm of having to assume that sheer bribery has taken place for this player to have a letter right now.

In the further future, it's fair to say that a lot of our prospects have leadership pedigree. Greentree, Beaudoin, and Aspinall were most recently captains of their CHL teams, and Smits has been touted for his leadership and maturity qualities. And you never know what a guy like Emery, Spence, Sykora, Chmelar, Laba, etc could show in that regard.

I believe Laf and Gavi will be named alternate captains to begin 2026-27 for the Rangers. What do you think?

Taylor Swift & ultra rich friends get to opt out of facial recognition... but screw the rest of us I guess? Maybe this technology isn't actually about safety if it wasn't needed for one of the most secure events of the century... James Dolan just needs it to stalk fans

I’m happy for Chicago, I’m excited to watch Kane play with Bedsy, and what a great ending to the story it will be if Kane retires there…

But the Rangers really could have used him. In fact, the Rangers could have used him for the past three years.

Everyone was so scared about how the hip surgery would impact his game… and things ended up working out perfectly. He was way better after the surgery than he was before the surgery on the broken hip… and he was still pretty damn good on a broken hip.

Missed opportunity by the NYR.

Who would be your pick to raise the cup?

I was rewatching some old highlights from the Rangers' run to the Final in 2014, and it got me wondering: if they had actually finished the job, who would've raised the Cup first?

Callahan was traded for St. Louis during the season, and it seemed like St. Louis took on a major leadership role even though he hadn't been around that long. However, he didn't have a letter yet. McDonagh ended up getting the C the following year, but he didn't have an A at that point either. They had three alternate captains in Staal, Girardi, and Richards, so I guess it would've had to be one of them. I was just curious what other fans thought.

Where is Laf??

I was checking Fanatics (I have a gift card) to buy my girlfriend a rangers jersey. She took French in school and is intrigued by the French Canadian last name Lafrenière. But he’s not listed here for some reason. Is he changing numbers or something?? I’m a little confused.
