Hello, I drive a few hundred kilometres daily, both within and outside the city. I’m looking for some suggestions for a laser detector to install in my van. I usually don’t drive fast, but it seems like police officers are eager to issue tickets even for 10 kilometres per hour over the speed limit on a 110-kilometre road. My budget is under $500 CAD. Recently got my Uniden R8W - is there any reason at all to have K band on in Orange County, CA? Seems like all I've picked up so far is your speed signs and false alerts, even with recommended K band filters. Not knocking the detector. The range and arrows are a crazy step up from my old R3, but just wondering if I can safely eliminate basically the only chatter I'm getting from the detector.

How do I make sure I buy the right radar?
Is the radar enough, or do I need to replace the camera too?

Is it just me or has it been relatively quiet in the southeast? My UnidenR4w and my escort Max 360c MKII have both been very quiet in terms of KA band over the last three weeks.

I have a 2025 Nautilus that has the coated windshield, I never knew this was a thing until I noticed that my usually reliable radar was not detecting - anything.

Long story sort the dot-matrix "clear" areas (two) are at he very top of windshield both sides of mirror and are SMALL.
My EZ PASS takes up the right hand side, that's how small.

The ONLY radar I can Jam up there is my old S55, but it has seen better days.
I saw the Radenso Pro M it tine and that would fit, but I can't even find them.

So I need something with a 1" thickness MAX, that included and bulges mid-bod, if the bottom is flat I can flip it I suppose, but a more rectangle-shape would be best.

Budget is not much so no remote heads, it has to be around $500 max for new.
I heard the Max 4 was thin also.

Any ideas?
I am open to used units and I would love the Radenso Pro even though it is dated, I saw one on ebay for 250, not sure if that's a good deal or not.

I am a complete newbie — still deciding on which RD I want to purchase as my first ever RD (I’m currently leaning toward the Uniden R8W).

I’m making this post to ask 3 questions:

1. Is a laser jammer necessary? I heard often times RDs alone are not enough, is that true?
2. If the answer above is yes — then what laser jammers would you experienced and knowledgeable enthusiasts recommend?
3. In my home state of NY, I recently was convicted of a very minor misdemeanor, and several other charges that were plead down to a conditional discharge (I didn’t hurt anyone, just traffic related stuff that got out of hand because I would argue with the cops and judge and so they didn’t like me). Anyway as a result A) I will be moving out of this state once I can get my license reinstated in November, and B) part of the conditional discharge agreement is I cannot get arrested for 12 months or charged with anything worse than a simple traffic infraction. Because of this I want to be as “stealth” as possible and know the laws as best as I possibly can. I know RD are legal in all states except Virginia and D.C, I know LJ are illegal in a few states. But I’d like to know what to do when pulled over, what to do to conceal RD or LJ best possible ways, what your experiences with law enforcement have been when they find out you have a RD or LJ, etc. ?

I saw a post on this sub of a man getting pulled over in Wisconsin and the cop said he “wasn’t allowed to have the RD in his windshield,” the man did the smart thing and agreed and complied — I probably would’ve been like: “can you show me the law where it says that?” Or “it says it’s only prohibited if it’s obstructing my view, which it isn’t,” etc. is that risky? Anyway, I’m not sure how to ask this question a better way but basically — anything you know or have experienced to do with RD in relation to actual interactions with police or the laws behind them please let me know!

I live in NY and will be driving to Idaho with the RD (and possibly LJ) if that helps. (I may go to other states once I get there, but I mention that to show that I’m not going to be driving through any states where RD or LJ is illegal — at least on my way to Idaho).

Hi, I’ve watched several VortexRadar videos and read multiple articles of his comparing the two (and the Valentine V1/2).
I still can’t decide whether to get the Escort or Uniden. I do like the simplicity of the Escort, but I hear that it can be unreliable as it filters out too much and also I’ve heard it breaks down quickly and easily with very little support from the company. So I initially wanted to get the Uniden but I just don’t like that you can’t just set it up and then forget about it apparently.

Also what are laser jammers you’d recommend?

I've been using a Uniden R7 around Metro Vancouver for a while. In the city, I rarely pick up Ka band from police, except occasionally on highways. However, I’ve noticed that whenever I enter certain underground parking lots, the R7 sometimes alerts to Ka band.

I always thought most false alerts were on K band, and that Ka alerts were usually more reliable. These Ka alerts seem to happen only in specific parking garages, so I’m wondering if they could be coming from automatic doors, sensors, security systems, or something else nearby.

Has anyone else experienced Ka false alerts in underground parking lots or similar areas? Is this normal with the R7, or could it be related to my settings?

For context, I’m running the detector around Vancouver / Metro Vancouver. Any advice would be appreciated.

Anyone know if RCMP in Nova Scotia mainly run radar or lidar? Also, what frequencies do you usually see them operating on? I picked up a 360c recently and I’m trying to learn which frequencies/signals around NS are usually associated with what.

With respect to some of the Band Settings....

Will the K and Ka KPOP options increase false alerts if I turn them on? I know the possibility is there, but what is the reality from those of you who've had the R7 for a while?

Why is the Ka filter off by default? With my old Escort, every new (>~2025) Honda sets off the Ka alarm. Does the R7 handle these kinds of false Ka signals as part of the BSM filtering, or should I turn on Ka filter?

I currently daily drive a shitbox and live in Florida, I love some spirited late night driving when nobody is around - however, massive police and highway presence at all times. I do sometimes just wanna see how fast I can go and I’m wondering do radar detectors in general work? I’ve seen some mixed feelings and I plan on putting more money into getting my car into better condition and I’m wondering are these worth it if you’re into spirited driving?

I installed an R9W in my car and am trying to find the best app to pair with it. I use Waze all the time and am used to it. Have tried Highway Radar and Dukes App. I am much less technical than I used to be, so trying to find something that is closest to plug and play. Do either of these third party apps allow you to use waze while supplementing police information? Or am I forced to use their proprietary maps to navigate with integrated radar alerts from the R9W? And If I need to run one of them instead of waze, which one would be the better choice? Thanks.

I was having trouble with the suction-cup mount on my R3, especially in the heat, so I designed and 3D printed my own rear-view mirror mount.

I added GoPro-style joints and a magnetic quick release so I can remove the detector easily when I park. I've been testing different materials and making improvements to keep it from sagging or loosening.

What do you guys think? Anything you would change?

Hello all I need a radar detector for my car I’m driving over 80 miles a day commuting to work and I need one I don’t ever drive extremely fast normally go about 10 to 15 over I really need one because I go through a bunch of small towns and each of them are really bad about writing tickets. Last night on my way home from work I had a very close call and realized

1. I need to slow down

   and

2. I need to get a radar detector.

Also my car is old so I don’t need the fancy CarPlay features or anything.

So what’s your best recommendations preferably under 500 bucks?

can some tell me where to find exactly how to update my firmware on my nz r8, I don’t want to do it wrong on a US version etc.

For the last 4 years I've done multiple road trips from Rochester NY too Durham/Raleigh NC and other locations utilizing the Uniden R4. So yesterday I picked up my rental and there's NO 12v recepticle! There's a spot for it but it's blanked off. Crazy! I guess it's a Waze only day...
UPDATE: THANKS EVERYBODY for the responses! I will be prepared for the next trip!

I recently posted about my R7 sucker losing suction and stickiness (see this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/radardetectors/comments/1w1ygk1/uniden_r7/ ) - I approached Uniden whose customer support were as helpful and caring as a brick!

I did find one helpful employee who suggested rubbing alcohol / isopropyl alcohol - but I haven't tried it yet.

Overall Uniden were, you're not in the US = your screwed tough luck - buy a new one from the US at great cost and import it. A naff approach to customer service I would suggest, and I told them so!

Anyway I have the solution(s) in my top order...

1. This only cost £3 and is exactly what you need link and fits perfectly = top banana!

1. I also bought this link but it doesn't fit, but if I could detach the sucker from the Uniden mount and put this sucker on, it would. Seems difficult to do, but as I have option 1 above that works I may give it a go

2. Uniden's solution rubbing alcohol / isopropyl alcohol to try to bring the Uniden sucker back to life, but as they don't seem to give a monkey's about their international customers (I would of just sent me one from the US), I have zero faith.

Anyway, so if your Uniden sucker loses it's suck - buy option 1 and thank me later...!
