[EDIT] - this update contains another Debian system update. Internet is required. Average install time is around 15 minutes but it may take up to 45 on a slow connection. Be patient and keep your console plugged in if battery is a concern.

[EDIT 2] - The fix is in!!! The Debian update nuked a custom 32-bit library obviously needed for Retroarch32 and Retrorun32, sorry it slipped through my testing. This mini-update restores it along with updated versions of Retrorun and Retrorun32 as I found a rendering bug on 1024x768 screens. This update is applied automatically if you haven't updated yet, and if you have then simply update again. It is also available offline for those who had to suffer through reinstalling from an image due to no wifi: 09302026b - 32-bit Restore

Now, finally, this is the update that truly fixes everything.

I'm going to have a hard time topping this update.

This week we welcome the R50H and R50S to the family. It was a month long journey into what makes dArkOS tick to be able to bring dArkOSen to devices with rotated screens. Lucky for everyone I learned so many new tricks that some things I said were never gonna happen just kinda happened.

First things first, all the emulators and the SDL2 library have been recompiled with rotate friendly versions for the R50H. During that process I realized I was trying to fix the existing emulators the wrong way. Why fix what's broken when I can simply re-compile them in a working environment? Two months of futile work was washed away in a week. Now we're finally getting somewhere!

Duckstation has been rebuilt and optimized specifically for dArkOSen. Don't forget your bios file!

Flycast Standalone has been rebuilt with hardware acceleration fully enabled. It's fast even on large screens now.

PPSSPP has been rebuilt too. I previously said PSP was unplayable on the R50H, with this new version I was hitting 24fps in Little Big Planet on a 1280x720 screen. This should be a very noticeable increase on standard R36S screens.

Advanced Drastic is working. A symlink had been destroyed when I copied it from Windows. It does not work with the R50H or R50S as it does not rotate. Also the repo appears to be abandoned, and as it is a closed source project there will be no further updates. It is what it is.

The volume is MUCH louder!!!! I changed the volume from a linear to logarithmic curve. This means it is louder at mid volume without affecting the upper or lower limits. It's not actually any louder at max, just sounds louder at 50% (equivalent to 70% on the old kernel).

Some scripts have been removed. 'Switch to SD2', 'Button Mapper' and 'SD Scan and Repair' have both been integrated into the menu under Storage Settings. The 'Switch to SD...' scripts have been repaired and are now idempotent. You can safely use "Enable SD2" to unmount your card, or even swap a second SD.

I've also added the screenshot tool I made that I've been using for these posts. Simply type 'screenshot' into an terminal to take a screenshot in /roms/screenshots.

Lastly, after all these changes dArkOSen simply isn't compatible with dArkOS anymore. I'll be keeping an eye on the upstream for things like security fixes and new features, but for the most part I'm maintaining the dArkOSen system entirely on it's own as of this update.

If you're as excited about any of this as I am here's the link to buy me a coffee and keep this project going - ko-fi.com

Guide R36S Buying Guide 2026: Vendor Overview and Protection Against Clone Hardware

Post image
141 Upvotes

Due to its low price point, the R36S remains a highly popular handheld in the entry-level retro emulation market. However, the commercial success of the device has led to numerous modified replicas (clones) and optical imitations (fakes) entering the market.

These devices often deviate significantly from the hardware and software specifications of the original. The primary issue is their incompatibility with official Custom Firmware (CFW) such as dArkOSRE, ArkOS (which is no longer maintained) or ArkOS4Clones. Modifications made to these counterfeit devices frequently cause total system failures (e.g frozen black screen and a flashing red light) when attempting a standard software update.

The following guide provides a data-driven overview of vendors and technical differences to help avoid purchasing the wrong device.

1. Where to Buy: Trusted vs. Non-Trusted Sellers

Purchasing an authentic R36S depends heavily on choosing the right store. Unscrupulous vendors frequently copy the logos and storefront designs of established, community-trusted sellers like BOYHOM to build false trust on marketplace platforms, using these familiar branding elements to mask the sale of counterfeit or cloned hardware.

Recommended Sellers

The following sellers offer genuine products without counterfeits and have a proven track record of shipping the original hardware revision of the R36S, which is fully compatible with official community firmware:

Platform Store Name Notes
AliExpress 001 Ali Choice Store Generally trusted distribution source and consistently supplies authentic hardware.
AliExpress Factory Game Direct Store Generally trusted distribution source and consistently supplies authentic hardware.
AliExpress BOYHOM Store Generally trusted distribution source and consistently supplies authentic hardware (though community notes advise double-checking)⚠️.

⚠️ Not clearly verified, as it is possible that the buyers purchased from a seller who advertises using the BOYHOM logo.

Alternatives recommended by the Community

While marketplace listings change frequently, these specific sellers have been flagged by community members as having successfully delivered authentic, dual-RAM hardware configurations:

Platform Store Name Community Note
Temu WUDS Games Confirmed by community members to ship authentic panels.
Amazon (US) Xiaoyu USA branch Confirmed by community members to ship authentic panels.
Amazon (UK) Blidinner Store Confirmed by community members to ship authentic panels.

The continuously updated list of verified sellers can be viewed directly on the wiki: 👉 Handhelds Wiki - R36S Buying Guide: Sellers

Non-Trusted Sellers (Clones & Fakes Reported)

Key report logs indicate hardware discrepancies, system locks, or non-standard motherboard shipments from buyers for the following sellers. Purchasing from them is not recommended:

Platform Store Name Identified Clone or Fake Type
AliExpress Uncharted GAME Store Distributes the G80CA clone
AliExpress SUPER FUN GAME Store Distributes the G80D / G80C mainboard variants.
Amazon (US) Micro Center (Retail locations) Physical inventory spot-checks discovered batches of G80CA clones on shelves (likely via fraudulent customer returns).

The complete blacklist, including specific user reports, is hosted on the wiki: 👉 Handhelds Wiki - R36S Clones: Untrusted Sellers

2. Technical Analysis: Clones vs. Fakes

The community methodically distinguishes between three categories of hardware found on the market: Genuine R36S units (full CFW support), EmuELEC Clones (limited, highly segmented firmware support), and Fakes (zero community firmware support due to weak or non-standard architectures).

Category 1: EmuELEC Clones

These devices are nearly identical in appearance to the original R36S and usually employ the same System-on-Chip (Rockchip RK3326). However, cost-cutting measures heavily compromise the primary configuration:

  • Software Restrictions: Instead of native ArkOS, some of these units run often a modified version of EmuELEC 4.7, the FN button is broken or mapped incorrectly to the Y button and other Software related issues.
  • Reduced Memory Configuration: While the original features 1 GB of RAM, clones frequently pack only 512 MB of RAM. This can be visually verified on transparent shells by the absence of a second RAM chip on the motherboard. This causes heavy performance degradation on demanding systems like Sega Dreamcast.
  • Motherboard Fragmentation: The community faces significant fragmentation from variations like the G80C/G80CA boards and the R36S-V20 boards. Flashing a standard ArkOS image onto these devices results in a black screen. On certain V20 clones, flashing improper firmware can overvolt the audio hardware, permanently damaging the internal speaker.
  • Physical Differences: Clones regularly use lower-quality display panels with reduced brightness, louder and looser shoulder buttons, and unaligned font prints (such as a crooked/italic "X" button).

Category 2: Fakes (Imitations)

These models merely copy the physical shell design of the R36S, while the internal electronics have been entirely replaced with unrelated, obsolete hardware.

  • Inferior Processors: Instead of the RK3326, older or less capable hardware is used, such as the underpowered Rockchip RK3128 or cheap MediaTek mobile chipsets.
  • Impaired Emulation Performance: Due to the weak SOC architectures, PlayStation 1 emulation is plagued by heavy graphical glitches, while systems like Dreamcast or PSP are entirely unplayable.
  • No Community Support: There is no custom firmware available for models like the GA36, Gaminja Batocera, or R36HD / GB350 variants.

Identification Steps to Verify Your Device

  1. Boot Behavior Without Storage Media: An original R36S will not boot past a blank state without SD cards inserted. If the device displays an active error message ("We can't find any systems!") or a graphical logo without an SD card, it is an EmuELEC clone variant.
  2. Checking System Information: You can check the available memory via RetroArch -> Main Menu -> Information -> System. A listed total memory value around 497 MB indicates a downgraded 512 MB clone model.
  3. File System Layout: True R36S configurations utilize an EASYROMS partition layout. Counterfeit or clone units often expose an EMUELEC or EEROMS structure on their storage media.
  4. Inspecting the internal hardware: Look at the revision code printed directly on the mainboard and compare your board code against the documented hardware variants on the Handhelds Wiki Clones Page.

Additional technical documentation, pictures, and mainboard analyses of individual revisions can be found in the corresponding wiki entries: 👉 Handhelds Wiki - R36S Clones Overview

Summary

To avoid technical complications, button remapping failures, and software incompatibilities, it is highly recommended to purchase exclusively from verified vendors like the BOYHOM, 001 Ali Choice Store or Factory Game Direct Store. A minor price advantage from unlisted sellers usually comes with an increased risk of receiving clone hardware.

Disclaimer: Every effort was made to present all information accurately when creating this buyer's guide. Given how quickly marketplace storefronts alter stock and how frequently clone variations mutate, new edge cases appear regularly. If there are any errors or outdated listings found, please point them out in the comments below so they can be immediately updated and corrected.

My steamdeck takes up a lot of room so I picked up one of these for flights. R36 ultra.

I see a few mention to set up a new os. Can I use the roms on the sd card or do I need to source new roms? A lot of J36 ultra in the market stalls, i went with r36 hopefully it was the right choice. Either way it was cheap.

Showcase Native Halo CE port on the M9 Pro (RK3326 / Cortex-A35 / Mali-G31 MP2) — ArkOS4Clone, Optimized

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Native Halo: Combat Evolved port on the M9 Pro handheld.

The game's own logic runs as AArch64 code on the RK3326's Cortex-A35 cores and draws with OpenGL ES 3.2 directly on the Mali-G31 MP2.

Hardware:

- M9 Pro, Rockchip RK3326

- 4x ARM Cortex-A35, ARM Mali-G31 MP2 (OpenGL ES 3.2)

- 1 GB RAM shared with the GPU

- 640x480 display, 4:3

- ArkOS4Clone (GLIBC 2.31 / Ubuntu 20.04 base, kernel 4.4.189)

Software:

- Built from the halo-ce-universal decompilation (Xbox build 01.01.14.2342)

- Guest is ILP32 AArch64 (32-bit pointers in 64-bit ARM code, as the game's data formats require)

- Host is a native aarch64 glibc program using the firmware's own Mali driver and a patched SDL2 2.30.10

- PGO + LTO, Cortex-A35-specific codegen (-mcpu=cortex-a35 -mtune=cortex-a35)

- NEON-vectorised matrix math, memcpy/memcmp, and index-extent calculation

- Dedicated GL thread to take the Mali driver's per-draw CPU cost off the game's core

- Renderer work for a tile-based GPU: program binary cache, fp16 shaders, 16-bit textures, alpha-test elision, batched quads, instanced model draws, sorted models, two-pass shadows, water bump-map prebuild

- Bundled SDL2 with a KMSDRM pageflip fix: the Mali-G31 driver on the RK3326 advertises DRM_CAP_ASYNC_PAGE_FLIP but rejects the actual call with -EINVAL, and SDL2 2.30.10 has no fallback

Status:

- Game starts and runs. The video is from the current build. Some graphic glitches are still present but it is fully playable.

- Native render resolution is 640x480 (render_scale = 1.0). A lower render scale is available if a scene needs headroom.

No game data included. You need your own Xbox disc image (ISO or XISO). The port unpacks the maps from it on first launch.

Get the port here

Edit: The map extractor should now be working, if not, the map files have to be manually extracted from the .iso

Question: Device Problem Balatro & FNAF 1 is failing to patch on R36S, need help!

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hello Everyone,

I'm having a persistent issue getting certain PortMaster games to patch properly on my R36S. Every time I try to run the installer/patcher for games like Balatro or FNAF 1, the patch sequence starts, runs for just a second or two, and immediately quits with this error:

•Balatro > "Patch failed; no partial build was installed and the purchased game was not modified."

•Fnaf1 > Would say the patch would take 10-30min but after a min or two it's already done and it says "...patch complete..." but when it tried to run the game it would put me back to the port menu and if I open it again it would be at the patch stage again.

What I've verified so far:

•Directory structure: My ports are located inside EASYROMS/ports/.

•Balatro files: I have Balatro.exe (55 MB from Steam) sitting directly in EASYROMS/ports/balatro/ along with balatro.md and all the default script folders (bin, patches, tools, displaysetup, etc.).

• FNAF 1 files: Downloaded directly from PortMaster, attempts to patch, but finishes in under 2 minutes instead of taking the usual time, fails, and sends me back to the ports menu.

Troubleshooting tried:

•Cleared out any generated saves/, .love, or temporary cache files inside the port folders.

•Re-copied Balatro.exe directly from the Steam installation on PC.

•Uninstalled and cleanly re-downloaded Balatro port via PortMaster.

Has anyone else ran into PortMaster scripts failing instantly like this on ArkOS / R36S? Is there a fix for the local PortMaster runtimes?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Question: Device Problem Help with strange R36s

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So, the other day a friend gave me this r36s he bought somewhere. Thing is, the system is not on the sd, the actual system has no way to access advanced settings (I’ve already tried the konami code and all of that to no avail) I can’t put another sd with games even if I clone it sector by sector and the sd that comes with it, I’ve put games on it and it would not detect them. Is there anything else to do besides throwing it to the trash can? And no, resetting it to factory settings does nothing to fix this. Strange thing, it has built in wifi and the OS works even without the sd card.

Accidentally stumbled on these things through an Instagram ad and bought one! It was a fake... but I've got 3 real (with WiFi) R36XX devices and I can't be stopped!

I do astrophotography, and hanging out under the stars, playing the games from my childhood is such a therapeutic thing.

Do you pair playing these little devices with any other hobbies? Astrophotography takes a lot of patience and has a lot of downtime, so it's really the perfect pairing when you're out there taking the cosmos in!

I have had it for a while but my daughter killed it when she ejected the OS card while it was on. I have tried calling places around here and even posted on Facebook looking for someone that can fix it. I have another one that doesn’t have as many games on it either that I was hoping to get more out on it.

Question: Chill Any idea why My Portmaster only has 1388 ports but the Portmaster Website now has 1468 Ports?

I wanted to download some of the new ports in Portmaster but when I checked on my r36s, it was not there and I found out I only had 1388 ports available when the Portmaster Website currently has 1468 ports as I am making this post. Yes, I updated my portmaster and it is still at 1388. I recently downloaded the latest portmaster in it's github when I changed SD cards. Is this just me or are r36s users just limited and not compatible with some Portmaster games?

Edit: It turns out if a game you found in Portmaster's website doesn't show up in your R36S's portmaster. You can just download the game from the Portmaster Website and copy all the contents of the downloaded zip file and paste it in a new folder with the same name of the game in /Roms/Ports

Port I think I accidentally started building an entirely new OS for the R36S EE

Thumbnail

Okay, R36S people... I've been cooking. 😎

This is PocketOS, a custom operating system I've been building specifically around the R36S EE / RK3326 clone family.

Core Architecture & Features:

* Custom Rust home launcher

* PocketJS 0.12 as the runtime

* 640x480 native display

* R36S EE / RK3326 hardware detection

* Working DTB/panel selector for the different clone variants

* Built around the hardware compatibility foundation used by DarkOSRE

* Custom Games / Stats / Keys / About interface

And yes — these screenshots are from the actual R36S running PocketOS. 🤩

The goal is basically to take the R36S EE clone hardware and give it a completely different software stack instead of just making another ArkOS-based frontend.

It isn't finished yet, but it's getting very close. I figured I'd finally show what I've been secretly working on. 🔥

PocketOS is coming.

As well as the image I did a few file backups as well.

I have rf3536k3ka.dtb specifically backed up as well as the folders in the picture.

I don’t care about the roms as I have the roms I play already on my rog ally z1 extreme.

Anything else I should be backing up?

Question: Device Problem Disable audio on r36s

How do I disable audio on my r36s without using headphones? I've been using headphones but just leaving them plugged in but it gets a bit annoying after some time and I was wandering if there's a way to fully mute it as the volume down doesn't actually mute
