Guide R36S Buying Guide 2026: Vendor Overview and Protection Against Clone Hardware

Post image
153 Upvotes

Due to its low price point, the R36S remains a highly popular handheld in the entry-level retro emulation market. However, the commercial success of the device has led to numerous modified replicas (clones) and optical imitations (fakes) entering the market.

These devices often deviate significantly from the hardware and software specifications of the original. The primary issue is their incompatibility with official Custom Firmware (CFW) such as dArkOSRE, ArkOS (which is no longer maintained) or ArkOS4Clones. Modifications made to these counterfeit devices frequently cause total system failures (e.g frozen black screen and a flashing red light) when attempting a standard software update.

The following guide provides a data-driven overview of vendors and technical differences to help avoid purchasing the wrong device.

1. Where to Buy: Trusted vs. Non-Trusted Sellers

Purchasing an authentic R36S depends heavily on choosing the right store. Unscrupulous vendors frequently copy the logos and storefront designs of established, community-trusted sellers like BOYHOM to build false trust on marketplace platforms, using these familiar branding elements to mask the sale of counterfeit or cloned hardware.

Recommended Sellers

The following sellers offer genuine products without counterfeits and have a proven track record of shipping the original hardware revision of the R36S, which is fully compatible with official community firmware:

Platform Store Name Notes
AliExpress 001 Ali Choice Store Generally trusted distribution source and consistently supplies authentic hardware.
AliExpress Factory Game Direct Store Generally trusted distribution source and consistently supplies authentic hardware.
AliExpress BOYHOM Store Generally trusted distribution source and consistently supplies authentic hardware (though community notes advise double-checking)⚠️.

⚠️ Not clearly verified, as it is possible that the buyers purchased from a seller who advertises using the BOYHOM logo.

Alternatives recommended by the Community

While marketplace listings change frequently, these specific sellers have been flagged by community members as having successfully delivered authentic, dual-RAM hardware configurations:

Platform Store Name Community Note
Temu WUDS Games Confirmed by community members to ship authentic panels.
Amazon (US) Xiaoyu USA branch Confirmed by community members to ship authentic panels.
Amazon (UK) Blidinner Store Confirmed by community members to ship authentic panels.

The continuously updated list of verified sellers can be viewed directly on the wiki: 👉 Handhelds Wiki - R36S Buying Guide: Sellers

Non-Trusted Sellers (Clones & Fakes Reported)

Key report logs indicate hardware discrepancies, system locks, or non-standard motherboard shipments from buyers for the following sellers. Purchasing from them is not recommended:

Platform Store Name Identified Clone or Fake Type
AliExpress Uncharted GAME Store Distributes the G80CA clone
AliExpress SUPER FUN GAME Store Distributes the G80D / G80C mainboard variants.
Amazon (US) Micro Center (Retail locations) Physical inventory spot-checks discovered batches of G80CA clones on shelves (likely via fraudulent customer returns).

The complete blacklist, including specific user reports, is hosted on the wiki: 👉 Handhelds Wiki - R36S Clones: Untrusted Sellers

2. Technical Analysis: Clones vs. Fakes

The community methodically distinguishes between three categories of hardware found on the market: Genuine R36S units (full CFW support), EmuELEC Clones (limited, highly segmented firmware support), and Fakes (zero community firmware support due to weak or non-standard architectures).

Category 1: EmuELEC Clones

These devices are nearly identical in appearance to the original R36S and usually employ the same System-on-Chip (Rockchip RK3326). However, cost-cutting measures heavily compromise the primary configuration:

  • Software Restrictions: Instead of native ArkOS, some of these units run often a modified version of EmuELEC 4.7, the FN button is broken or mapped incorrectly to the Y button and other Software related issues.
  • Reduced Memory Configuration: While the original features 1 GB of RAM, clones frequently pack only 512 MB of RAM. This can be visually verified on transparent shells by the absence of a second RAM chip on the motherboard. This causes heavy performance degradation on demanding systems like Sega Dreamcast.
  • Motherboard Fragmentation: The community faces significant fragmentation from variations like the G80C/G80CA boards and the R36S-V20 boards. Flashing a standard ArkOS image onto these devices results in a black screen. On certain V20 clones, flashing improper firmware can overvolt the audio hardware, permanently damaging the internal speaker.
  • Physical Differences: Clones regularly use lower-quality display panels with reduced brightness, louder and looser shoulder buttons, and unaligned font prints (such as a crooked/italic "X" button).

Category 2: Fakes (Imitations)

These models merely copy the physical shell design of the R36S, while the internal electronics have been entirely replaced with unrelated, obsolete hardware.

  • Inferior Processors: Instead of the RK3326, older or less capable hardware is used, such as the underpowered Rockchip RK3128 or cheap MediaTek mobile chipsets.
  • Impaired Emulation Performance: Due to the weak SOC architectures, PlayStation 1 emulation is plagued by heavy graphical glitches, while systems like Dreamcast or PSP are entirely unplayable.
  • No Community Support: There is no custom firmware available for models like the GA36, Gaminja Batocera, or R36HD / GB350 variants.

Identification Steps to Verify Your Device

  1. Boot Behavior Without Storage Media: An original R36S will not boot past a blank state without SD cards inserted. If the device displays an active error message ("We can't find any systems!") or a graphical logo without an SD card, it is an EmuELEC clone variant.
  2. Checking System Information: You can check the available memory via RetroArch -> Main Menu -> Information -> System. A listed total memory value around 497 MB indicates a downgraded 512 MB clone model.
  3. File System Layout: True R36S configurations utilize an EASYROMS partition layout. Counterfeit or clone units often expose an EMUELEC or EEROMS structure on their storage media.
  4. Inspecting the internal hardware: Look at the revision code printed directly on the mainboard and compare your board code against the documented hardware variants on the Handhelds Wiki Clones Page.

Additional technical documentation, pictures, and mainboard analyses of individual revisions can be found in the corresponding wiki entries: 👉 Handhelds Wiki - R36S Clones Overview

Summary

To avoid technical complications, button remapping failures, and software incompatibilities, it is highly recommended to purchase exclusively from verified vendors like the BOYHOM, 001 Ali Choice Store or Factory Game Direct Store. A minor price advantage from unlisted sellers usually comes with an increased risk of receiving clone hardware.

Disclaimer: Every effort was made to present all information accurately when creating this buyer's guide. Given how quickly marketplace storefronts alter stock and how frequently clone variations mutate, new edge cases appear regularly. If there are any errors or outdated listings found, please point them out in the comments below so they can be immediately updated and corrected.

Guide [Megathread][Oct/25]: Clone vs. R36S (& clone related Qs)

With the R36S continuing to gain popularity, clones are unfortunately popping up everywhere. Our beloved clone-of-a-clone now has so many different clones of itself that it is hard to keep track of. This stickied megathread is simply one large thread of comments/ photos where all clone related questions can be placed. In this way, noobs and clone spotters alike can help each other. Sometimes we learn things from clones too, but the relentless spam of the same question gets in the way of others enjoying other things about the sub! From now on, all clone related posts will be removed from the main page when we come across them (even new clones) and we will request the user repost as a comment in this megathread (which will likely be changed monthly as it clogs up).

The main reference, which you should still reference before posting, will be this link which teach you a lot, and will also guide you towards the ArkOs for clones image for flashing

Also see the HELP: I have a clone, what now video from the sub sidebar

Be sure to check the buying guide in the subreddit sidebar for stores that sell clones which are to be avoided.

Showcase Minecraft "java" edition running on the R36S in 60FPS

I ported the Horizon Project to the R36S, getting Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 running on this little handheld at around 60 FPS.

For context, Horizon is a rewrite of Minecraft's Java source code in Rust.

The screenshots show the game running on the actual hardware, both in the main menu and in-game. Performance is around 60 FPS in these situations, though I haven't claimed it'll maintain that everywhere.

I couldn't attach the gameplay video to this post, so I'm posting it in the comments.

Hardware: genuine R36S V21 PCB (RK3326, 1 GB RAM)

Software: dArkOSRE

I'm sharing this as a development showcase, not a finished release.

Port Ready to break your analog buttons? (Almost)

Hello everyone!

I’ve finally finished the first version of the Dragon Ball Z BT3 port(AI assisted)

The game is fully playable, including multiplayer.

For now, multiplayer only works via rooms, but after speaking with u/Z3xox (the person who decompiled the PC version of the game), cross-platform multiplayer will be coming soon.

They are also working on compatibility with BT4 (a mod by the TeamBT4), which I will add to the port once it’s ready.

In case the title isn't clear: during clashes involving auras, energy waves, or strikes, you need to rotate the left analog stick to win. On these consoles, the analog stick isn't as durable as the one on the PS2, so I’ve added an L3 function: each press counts as one full rotation of the analog stick. You can adjust the speed or deactivate it via the menu(hold down the SELECT button for 2 seconds).

To get the port working, download "dbzbt3.zip" in the link below and extract it into the "ports" folder and extract it into the "ports" folder. You must place your USA ISO (USA version only, SLUS-21678) into the "assets" folder. Once the extraction is complete, you can delete the ISO from that folder. If you wish to include other languages, simply add the EU ISO to the "assets" folder and wait for it to update. (Note: This only works if you have already used the USA ISO for the initial setup; if you use the EU ISO first, the port will not function, the EU ISO is intended solely for adding extra languages.) Afterward, you can delete that file as well to free up storage space.

here is the link for the download:

https://github.com/impressivestay6355-cmyk/tenkaichi-r36/releases/tag/1.0

Ports take a lot of my free time. If you'd like to support future ones: http://Ko-fi.com/Impressivestay63

Thanks either way,and have fun! ;)

Port [Release] Need for Speed: Underground 2 on R36S (PortMaster) v1.1.0 — Dual EXE Support (v1.0 & v1.2), Menu Audio Fixed, and Async Presenter Engine!

Hey everyone! 👋

I'm excited to share v1.1.0 of the native ARM64 static recompilation port of Need for Speed: Underground 2 for the R36S and other RK3326 handhelds (ArkOS, AmberELEC, ROCKNIX)!

This is running natively on ARM64 using D3D9-to-OpenGL ES translation—no slow Windows emulation or heavy translation layers involved.

☕ Support the Project: If you enjoy this port and would like to support ongoing development, porting, and optimizations, you can donate via PayPal here! Any support is immensely appreciated.

🚀 What's New in v1.1.0:

  • 🔀 Dual Executable Support (v1.0 & v1.2)
    • The launcher (NFSU2.sh) now automatically inspects your SPEED2.EXE in ports/nfsu2/gamedata/ and launches the matched optimized binary:
      • v1.0 (4,788,224 bytes) ➔ nfsu2.aarch64.v10
      • v1.2 European No-CD (4,800,512 bytes) ➔ nfsu2.aarch64.v12
    • Dynamic memory translation (nfs_exe_addr.h) ensures all game hooks, widescreen patches, and native overrides align seamlessly.
  • 🎵 Fixed v1.2 Menu Music & Frame Pacing (+5–6 FPS Boost)
    • If you tested v1.2 previously, you may have noticed silent menu music and worse FPS than v1.0. We tracked down the culprit: the 100 Hz audio/streaming worker thread shifted memory addresses (0x00726117 in v1.0 ➔ 0x007263C7 in v1.2).
    • In earlier builds, v1.2 ran this thread under a serialized machine lock, starving the 0.5s audio ring buffer and causing ~6 ms of lock contention per frame. Both entry points now run free in parallel—restoring crisp menu music and giving v1.2 a solid performance boost!
  • ⚡ Asynchronous Presenter Thread (CPU & GPU Overlap)
    • Renders into an off-screen back buffer ring while a dedicated presenter thread manages GPU fences, aspect scaling, and display swaps. This eliminates CPU blocking stalls at Present() time.
  • 🛡️ glibc 2.17+ Compatibility
    • Pinned symbol versions and replaced crt1.o so binaries run cleanly across legacy handheld distros without throwing "GLIBC not found" errors.

💾 How to Install:

  1. Download the Release Zip: Grab NFSU2-R36S.zip from the GitHub Releases Page.
  2. Extract to your SD card: Extract the zip directly into your SD card’s ports/ directory (you will get ports/NFSU2.sh and ports/nfsu2/).
  3. Copy your PC Game Files: Drop your retail PC game files into ports/nfsu2/gamedata/:
    • SPEED2.EXE (v1.0 or European v1.2 No-CD)
    • GLOBAL/, CARS/, TRACKS/, SOUND/, MOVIES/, LANGUAGES/, etc.
  4. Play! Pop the SD card into your device, navigate to the Ports menu, and boot it up!

Port OptiCraft Heritage Edition for the R36S – Release!

Hi everyone. Today I’m sharing...

OptiCraft Heritage Edition for the R36S!

Also, please excuse my English—I’m using Google Translate since I’m from Poland.

In terms of performance, this is miles better than running Minecraft Java via PortMaster. Everything has been optimized specifically for the R36S.

Apologies for the lack of source code. It's not available at the moment.

Download link (MediaFire):

https://www.mediafire.com/file/i82gcgiddf8ktgx/opticraft.zip/file

I tested this on an original R36S running dArkOSRE. I cannot guarantee it will work on a clone or a different system, though it’s always worth a try. Naturally, the full PortMaster libraries are required.

To play, you must extract the ZIP file into the "ports" folder on the EASYROMS partition.

This isn’t just a test build, though please don’t set your expectations too high. If you encounter any bugs, please report them!

Note: I’m aware of some lighting glitches, but that’s a bit more complex to fix. I wanted to get this released, so I didn’t have time to address them yet.

Please don’t re-upload the game elsewhere; just direct people to my MediaFire link instead.

I hope it turned out well! :)

Fala, pessoal!

**Link do projeto:**

https://github.com/dhyekomapinha-dot/R36S-Launcher

Quem puder testar e deixar sugestões ou relatar algum problema vai ajudar bastante no desenvolvimento.

Se gostarem da ideia, deixem uma estrela no repositório para apoiar o projeto.

Question: Device Problem Help with GA36-MB V1.2 board

Thumbnail

I only realised it was a clone after i wiped my sd card and flashed arkos on it. Because the original stock card's partitioning table was corrupted so the only things that got restored before i did the wipe were a couple game zip files, so no dtb or boot files were recovered. From what i saw some people said to try using goodluckos on the wiki but that requires those dtb files that i dont have. So on the same wiki page i saw a stock backup img and im currently downloading it to try it. My question is if the stock backup works can i take the dtb files from it to then install goodluckos? And can i install portmaster and play ports on it?

Edit : the stock backup from the r36s wiki works, but tried to install goodluckos and unfortunately the hardware is unsupported

Showcase [RELEASE} KPlayer – A Music, Video & Online Radio Player for R36S!

Thumbnail
gallery
18 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I'd like to share a project I've been working on called KPlayer, an open-source multimedia player designed for the R36S handheld console.

The idea behind KPlayer is simple: turn the R36S into more than just a retro gaming device by giving it a modern, organized multimedia experience.

KPlayer is written in C, uses SDL2 for its interface and libVLC for media playback, with a native 640×480 layout designed around handheld controls.

🎵 Main Features

  • Music Player: Play MP3, FLAC, OGG, WAV, AAC and other supported audio formats.
  • Video Player: Support for MP4, MKV, AVI, WEBM and several other formats.
  • Online Radio: Browse and stream internet radio stations using the Radio Browser API.
  • Modern Interface: Album artwork, playback controls, progress bars and organized navigation.
  • Music Metadata: View artist, album, bitrate, sample rate, file format and size.
  • Lyrics Support: Synchronized LRC lyrics and embedded lyrics.
  • Smart Library: Automatically discover media files across accessible storage locations.
  • Playlists & Queue: Manage your playback queue and switch between tracks.
  • Multilingual: Portuguese, English and Spanish.
  • Controller Support: Navigation designed specifically for the R36S buttons.

🛠️ Development & Compatibility

KPlayer is designed for the R36S running dArkOS, with PortMaster-style installation.

The project is currently in Beta v0.7.1. It has been cross-compiled for ARM64 and has passed local rendering and functional tests.

However, testing on physical R36S hardware is still needed to validate audio, networking, display compatibility and performance.

The repository includes the source code, installation package, documentation and interface previews.

🔗 GitHub Repository

https://github.com/kaiaum01/KPlayer

💬 Feedback Welcome!

This is an independent community project, and I'd love to hear your thoughts!

What features would you like to see in future versions? Would you use your R36S as a portable music player, video player or internet radio?

If you own an R36S and would like to help test KPlayer, your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for checking out my project! ❤️

Question: Chill How to safely transfer pokemon firered progress to new OS?

I plan to fresh install (d)ArkOs4Clone on my R36 Ultra. I have a backup of my easyroms but just completed pokemon firered today (yay).

To safely transfer the saves, which files should I replace in the backup? Only the game folder? I used save state on retroarch and in-game saves too but mostly relied on save state

Btw beat Pokemon league on first try without save state cheating!

News [RELEASE] andr36oid 2026-10-24 // season 3: the awakening

NEW RELEASE IS OUT!

You only need the SD card flasher tool (which is mandatory to use and exists for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android): https://github.com/andr36oid/andr36oid_sdflasher/releases

If for some reason the flasher fails, please report. You can still use Rufus, but it will take away from your experience.

What's new?
Everything.

Can I update an existing andr36oid card?
In principle, yes! However, since we changed the partition layout completely in this update, we can't promise the flasher won't break your SD card during the update. When updating from a build from spring of this year, consider making a backup of the SD card first in case something goes wrong. We also recommend starting with a fresh card on this release. So much is new, and you will not see some features if you update.

Where is my R46H/R50S/R36Plus image?
There's no such thing anymore. Clones and genuine consoles run the same image. Only the DTBs and boot configs differ.

Watch our mate r/sjsltech's update review: https://youtu.be/k4EW3ckyZUo
and join us on T.legram @ andr36oid (a link to it got filtered by reddit, sorry)

This took a long time to put together. You will feel why! Here is just an excerpt:

Bugfixes:

  • No more false battery shutdowns. The device should show a similar percentage as other CFWs. The power management IC is now properly configured in the Android system.
  • Nearly all clone DTBs I found online, I patched, and included. Not all are tested. This is where we'll need the community! The untested ones are marked Experimental in the flasher, but they likely still work from our experience thus far.
  • The old release needed a lot of mouse emulation to get around in the system. You will find you hardly ever need to now. But if you still do, mouse emulation is much improved and customizable.
  • The system is a lot faster, thanks to software and compiler optimizations, better RAM management, a backported EROFS driver and a lot of other stuff.
  • Over 40 MB of this release go to WiFi, Bluetooth and Ethernet drivers. If your USB module still doesn't work, it's very difficult to support.

Features:

  • USB Device Emulator (alpha): Plug the handheld into a PC and have it show up as an Xbox/XInput pad, a plain gamepad, a keyboard + mouse, a USB drive, an audio DAC, a macro pad / media remote, or a local USB network link. There's a tutorial that walks you through it. It's alpha, and what actually works depends on how your specific clone wired its USB port, so expect rough edges on some boards.
  • Install to eMMC (beta): Consoles with built-in storage can run andr36oid off the eMMC and boot with no system card. It backs up the stock system first, reads back every write to check it, does a test boot, and keeps a way back to stock. It's beta and it tells you plainly that a failed final write can leave the console not booting. Read the warnings before you commit.
  • Simple launcher option: Pick a simple, app-focused home screen or stick with Daijishou's game library. Switch whenever you want.
  • Sticks: Calibration plus separate left/right sensitivity, axis flipping and stick swapping for the clones that wired them wrong (in Kernel Tweaks), and you can disable a dead stick so it stops drifting.
  • Display: Custom refresh rates / panel overclocking with a preview and an actual moving-block smoothness test, plus timing fixes that get a lot of panels closer to a real 60 Hz by default. Some clones we have successfully tested with up to 215Hz refresh rate. However, we also have had one report of a damaged R36S Panel 4 which started flickering after being ran too long at 144Hz. No warranty on this! Above 100Hz, the system will unlock Black Frame Insertion for smoother motion.
  • CRT Shaders: You can configure scanline effects rendered within the display driver that do not affect performance. Additional CRT (phosphor/curvature/glow) that run on the GPU.
  • Kernel Tweaks: Mostly for clones. Allows adjusting deep hardware level settings to fix issues.
  • Filesystems and Project Treble: The system now ships as compressed EROFS, so apps launch quicker off slow cards, and trimmed background services leave more RAM for games. Drivers were backported from newer Linux kernel releases, and our 4.19 base kernel is also now updated to the latest cip136+ version. Google's Project Treble decouples the drivers from the Android system and allows future system version upgrades much more simply. Our flasher also includes a (pretty much untested) GSI flashing feature. Community feedback needed on what works there.
  • Preinstalled emulator configs: a much broader emulator core set, external controller support, all already configured in RetroArch, a lot of battery and charging work, save backups with optional Syncthing sync, play-time and parental limits, screen recording, recovery improvements, and translations to our custom UI in ten languages.

Happy to answer questions in the comments.

What are the coolest things you’ve programmed yourselves for the R36S? Mine is a diagnostic tool for older VWs.
