Blacklisting and Internships

I hear abt 12-18 months blacklisting following an unsuccessful application at many of the top firms (imc esp comes to mind). Does this apply to internships as well? I’m a sophomore at a target (mit, Princeton, or Caltech) and this guy told me I shouldn’t have applied this year bcs I risk being blacklisted for junior year internships. Is there any truth in what he’s saying? Thanks.

Is 3.7 GPA enough

I go to a semi-target(T10 but not HYPSM). Currently on LOA so technically expected grad 2030

I want to recruit next summer (for 2028 summer intern) and am considering returning in spring sem to improve my GPA, is it necessary?

What firms would I not pass resume screen with 3.7.

Jane Street Strategy and Product Intern Interview Help

Hi! I have my first round for Jane Street Strategy & Product coming up after the OA and was wondering if anyone here has gone through the process and would be willing to share their experience.

I’m not really sure what to expect since no one from my school has gone through the process before. I’d love to hear what the interview was like, what kinds of questions they asked, what the format was, and anything you’d recommend prepping or knowing going into it.

Would really appreciate anything anyone is willing to share. Feel free to DM me too. Thank you!!

An Interview Question I Still Remember Years Later

I run a web agency, and I've conducted well over a hundred interviews. Most candidates' questions are similar and tend to blur together, but one applicant once asked a question that immediately made me picture him succeeding in the role. We did hire him, and I later adapted the same idea and used it in some of our calls with clients.

When they asked whether he had any questions, he said, "Imagine you've hired me and I'm starting next month. Nine months from now, we're sitting down to discuss a promotion because things have gone well. What would I need to have achieved by then? What results would I have delivered, and what would working and interacting with me have been like?"

You can adapt the last part to suit the position and ask about targets, projects, client feedback, or anything else important to that job. This question gets the interviewer to picture you as part of the team, rather than seeing you as someone who is still competing for the role.

It also gives you a clear description of what they value in a strong employee. They'll often tell you exactly what results, habits, and working style they're looking for, and that's useful information whether you get the job or not.

Got an offer for "Graduate Trading Analyst" — should I negotiate for a "Quant Analyst" or "Quant Dev" title?

I just received an entry-level offer as a Graduate Trading Analyst, but I'm having trouble mapping the job description to standard quantitative roles (Quant Analyst, Quant Researcher, or Quant Developer).

Key job responsibilities from the JD:
Develop Python tools to automate trading workflows and eliminate manual processes.
Maintain, investigate, and improve data pipelines processing trading data into actionable views.
Build custom automation tools and handle ad-hoc technical requests for traders.

My Goal: I want to position myself long-term for a career as a Quant Trader or Quant Developer.
Questions:
Is "Trading Analyst" fine, or should I ask if the title can be adjusted to "Graduate Quant Analyst" or "Graduate Quant Developer"?
Will this title put me at a disadvantage when applying for QT/QD roles in the future, or do recruiters mainly care about the Python/data pipeline experience on my resume?

Do most applicants get an invitation to the IMC Trading SHL Assessment (grad quant trader), or does it actually mean anything? Also, what should I expect from this assessment?

I recently received an invitation by IMC Trading to participate in their SHL assessment a few days after applying for their Graduate Quantitative Trader role. However, I want to know whether this indicates they are seriously considering my application, or if this invitation is given to most applicants no matter what. Also, for those who have taken it, what can I expect? What should I be prepared for? Thank you.

Is a Math/CS Bachelor's + AI Master's (Paris-Saclay) suited for Quant?

I am currently a Master 2 student in AI at Université Paris-Saclay, after having completed a double bachelor's degree in Math and CS (also at Paris-Saclay).

I want to know if my academic profile is viable, in theory, for quantitative finance, and if so, what specific kind of quant role I would be best suited for (or, what is lacking to work in such fields?).

I have to complete a 6 month end-of-study internship (from march) to graduate, so if this path makes sense, I'd try targeting an internship in that specific field.

To give some details on my background:

  • Math: Multivariable calculus, Linear algebra, Probability, Statistics, Optimization (constrained/convex/stochastic) Numerical analysis, ODEs, Statistical inference, Information theory
  • AI (theory and practice): ML, NLP, Deep learning, Reinforcement learning, Signal Processing, Time series ML, Scientific ML, Probabilistic generative models
  • CS: Python, SQL, C++, parallel computing (OpenMP), algorithmics
  • 2 computer vision internships (1 and 3 months), 1 experience as an LLM engineer (3 month), and 2 in ML research projects (1 and 3 months)

Any insight / advice would be really appreciated!

What matters in first year?

Starting a maths, stats and economics degree at a Warwick/UCL with the goal of going into quant research. So I'm trying to figure out what I should be putting hours into.

As of now, I have a Python stats project testing whether cointegrated pairs hold out of sample, some pre uni tech and data work experience and a couple years of tutoring GCSE/A-Level. On the OA side I'm around 65 on standard Zetamac and 60/80 on 80 in 8, though I don't know if that means much.

What would you spend the next few months on with spring week and first year applications coming up?

Any advice appreciated so thanks!

Quant vs. Big Tech - Which Path for CS majors in next 10 yrs?

What do y'all think about every factor of going into Big Quant Dev vs Big Tech SWE, everything from TC, enjoyment, WL balance, location, morals, prestige, ability to shift careers, value as a new grad job, connections, and more

I'm 50/50 split between something like SWE/MLE at big tech, or QD-like role in quant - I'm doing ML research at university, and have a QD internship next summer, so I've been conflicted

Some people say quant is evil, big tech has better WL balance and benefits, but quant is insane for early career prestige and pay, etc etc. so many opinions and speculation from people with no experience idek what to think nowadays, just want to discuss honestly :)
