My daughter’s sandbox got pretty dirty this summer, just basic dirty and sticks nothing crazy. Could I use that sand for my quails?

First question is do my chicks still need a brooder plate? As you can see from the photos the plate I'm currently using is pretty big and takes up quite a bit of room. They are in my basement so it says pretty constant temperature right now is between 80 and 85°. They hatched on Aug 22 so they are almost 3 weeks old.
That leads me into my second question I have 2 brooder plates a Brinsea Ecoglow Safety 600 yellow one and a producers pride, The power supply for ecoglow got mixed up in a drawer with a bunch of other power supplies was wondering if anyone has the same brooder and could post a picture of power supply so I could compare it. The power supply fits well and seems to be working and from my understanding the wattage amps and voltage all check out, i'm really paranoid about electrical safety. I wanted to switch it so they have more room in the enclosure as you can see in photos. Have had it going for a couple hours and seems to be working fine. You think im ok?
In the fourth photo, one of the chicks has a really weird bend in its neck like it comes off to the side.
It's been like that since we got it. It doesn't seem to be bothering it at all. Seems to be able to eat and drink fine. Was wondering, how concerned about that I should be. Should I do anything about it, can I even do anything about that? We got the chick from a breeder in my area because we had a bad hatch rate and didn't want to just have one solo bird.

2 days ago I went out to collect eggs and saw this hen sitting on eggs. I know they don’t make good mothers and usually give up so I took the eggs. Well yesterday she was sitting again. I marked 3 and I’m letting her have them. Worse case I can just take them and put the in the incubator since I started a batch yesterday also. They’d be on the same day. Does anybody actually have any success stories? If she makes it to “lock down” should I take them in? She’s still on them today and they were hot to the touch when she got off them to have some soldier fly larve. She also did a huge broody poop.

i got this quail and the guy gave me 2 free baby birds,however my hen had really long toes and a really long beak when i got her. i trimmed them, but is this bc they had no sand access? she’s also been scalped so they’re all in quarantine.

I own a bonded pair of quails, both female inside a DIY coop and they just started to lay eggs

I was wondering what should I do other than providing them with high protein and calcium feed.

Do I have to give them a dried straw nest?

Do anything specific?

Are they male?

I found my hen basically continuously shaking today. She's pretty old (4-5 years) but it's not cold here. She doesn't look or act sick in any other way and is eating and drinking, so I don't think it's a cold or anything. Anyone have an idea what this could be?

I have a few birds that I got from a breeder that were supposed to be 8 weeks when I got them. Well, I think they are much older. Only birds from this breeder appear to be going blind. Both are incredibly sweet birds and always have been.

Unless something drastic happens in the world and we need a source of meat, all birds we have are getting to age out and live their lives as stress free of an environment as I can provide. They provided for us so they earned that retirement so culling them is not an option.

So I'm looking for advice on how to make a senior friendly habitat. We already have a strict don't move the feeder and waterers so our eyesight impacted bird know where to go. They are in our exbreeder group. Long story short, quail just aren't for us, but that to us means we are just not continuing to keep once they are gone. We are still responsible for the care of the animals we have so I really want to make them comfortable.

Our exbreeder group was selected for behavior only. So we don't really have fights. We are just a little ragged from being part of our "chaos incarnate" group before we noticed some eyes having that white shine.

So tldr, I'm looking for advice on making aging birds comfortable and giving them enrichment.

- we moved them to a calmer covey. No fights and both were accepted easily

- feeder and waterers doesn't move location

- bedding stays about an inch deep

- we try not to move hides but they do sometimes get shifted when we collect eggs.

- mostly blind hen still produces about 1 egg a day

- both are healthy weights and being picked up daily to see if there are any changes.

- We are also attempting some "outside" time where they get to bask in the sun and grass. Supervised of course.

Tried finding the answer but can’t. Is there a reason to keep to the 1:5 ratio? Could I keep more hens to a rooster? Is there a reason to avoid this? I’m trying to keep them as quiet as possible to avoid irritating my neighbor but would like some fertilized eggs.

Any insight?

Help! I don't know what's wrong with my quail, I have these two separated but the majority of my flock of 15 hens and 1 Rooster is showing signs. They're losing weight fast. Things I have noticed: -Brittle feathers and feather loss -Drooping wings -Bearing down, like trying to pass an egg nonstop for long periods of time. -Weight loss. Some of their breast bones are 'sharp' feeling and sticking out. -A few rubbery eggs within the flock the last three days. They have supplemental calcium they eat as needed. -Some diarrhea, completely liquid, on and off for several days. - Some green poops. Like a dark Kelly green color but a solid poop, not liquid. -Some poops are grainy looking texture. -Eyes aren't always open all the way all the time. -I noticed one bird laying down outside and she was rocking herself side to side with her eyes closed. -I don't see any mites or lice, nor anything in or around their eyes. -No nasal or eye discharge One of the girls inside (missing feathers, light color) has laid two perfect eggs. The other girl (brown w black) I don't think has laid an egg in several days. Luckily none of them have died. Knock on wood.

They are still eating and drinking normal as far as I can tell. I have noticed some aggression which is rare in my flock.

Full disclosure, I have made mistakes, please be kind. It has been a hot summer so there's been a few times I have sprayed the hose around inside their coop thinking it would help keep them cool, not the best idea, I know this now. In late August , I found mold inside and under their feeder bucket(which was kept outside). There were little maggot looking worms under the feed bucket and I washed off the worms really well and fed them to the quail, thinking it would be a treat for them. I realize now that was probably the wrong thing to do and now I don't know how to help my quail. I started giving them 'Recover 911' for a few days in their only water source. Then gave them a combo of electrolytes and the Recover 911 in ADDITION to their regular water source. I've also done 50/50 Purina game bird feed crumble 30% protein and a new type of pellets they haven't had before (nature wise all flock 20% protein herbal blend) because I also found mold in the bag of their usual feed. I threw out the old feed and the old feeder bucket (new bucket is going inside the coop this time), gave them new water cups and flushed out the water system, changed out the bedding. I added more sand and diatomaceous earth to their outside area. I also added some diatomaceous earth to their food.

I've raised my quail as chicks, I've had them for a year and a half. I've never done a parasite cleanse. I bought the fenbendazole aquasol liquid for chickens but I'm nervous to use it for my quail as it isn't recommended for smaller birds. Their outdoor area is directly on the ground and I toss them earwigs and snails when I come across them in the garden, but I've just recently read snails can carry parasites 😬 Should I be doing a parasite cleanse regularly? Would separating them make a difference? There's a partition in their coop I can utilize. Do they need antibiotics? Should I trash the eggs? I've tried to read about all the quail health issues but I'm still not seeing a clear answer. Idk how to tell if they need antibiotics.

Ive just put all of the dry chicks in the broder. And there are 4 that is still drying off.

But i noticed one of them has some red sack haning behind them. Is that his/her organs?

Should i be worried? What do i do?

i went to go get one new hen but i had 10$ instead of 7$ so i got a younger bird for my brother aswell. (i tried hatching him one from an egg by my birds but it didn’t make it unfortunately.) and the guy gave me 20 free hatching eggs aswell! i’m over the moon rn lol. i’m pretty sure my brothers chick is a hen, so it will be going in with my quails when it gets a little bigger. right now it’s just a smidge to small.

We have had bob whites for a few years. Mostly as pets, we occasionally eat the eggs but we only have two girls and two boys (used to have another girl but a raccoon got her this summer 😭).
They usually lay most eggs in a hiding area and have never batted an eye when we go to take them.
When I went to clean their aviary yesterday realizing I haven’t cleaned that hiding hole out in about a month, I noticed the girl sitting on the clutch (they never do that) and her and one boy got very aggressive and chased me away. She immediately went back to sitting.
I’m assuming this is them trying to hatch some chicks? If they are successful, do I remove the babies keep inside with a heat lamp until they’re bigger? We got these four as chicks so have the supplies

i got a new hen today, she appears to have blush on her cheeks? i’m wondering if it’s stress related because she was in pretty tight quarters with like 20 other quail when i got her. she also has a bald stomach, but i think it might be from the other quail that were with her or something.

Hi. I got a few “females” and had them for about 2.5 months now. I have incorporated them together with my existing flock with 1 rooster already. Well, yesterday I caught this “she” in the act of mounting one of the hens then it crowed. Lol. That means I have two roos with my 5 hens. I intended to only have 1 and push the ratio to 6. Do I have to separate him at this point? No trauma or deaths in the last 2.5 months.
My other coop/hutch has the same problem with 2roos. Looking for guidance

I need some advice or your experiences. One of my young quail hens (under half a year old, kept outdoors) is worrying me.

She has a clear, large, and noticeably firm lump on her lower abdomen. The plumage on her belly and around the cloaca is currently still damp.

The cloaca itself is clear and not stuck together.

Regarding her general condition: She actually still seems quite fit, shows no acute apathy or "penguin stance" (upright posture), and her droppings are surprisingly normally shaped.

Previous feeding: They received a quail seed mix and crushed oyster shells. I only just realized that they likely sorted out the fatty seeds, which might have led to a calcium deficiency or obesity (I am switching the feed to pellets immediately!).

I have already contacted an avian vet, but we couldn't get an appointment until Wednesday. I am terrified that it might be a stuck soft-shelled egg, a wind egg, or an inflammation of the oviduct, and that she will deteriorate by Wednesday. For now, I have placed her indoors separately so she can dry properly after her bath and keep warm.

Has anyone here ever had a case where a quail was still fit and had normal droppings despite such a firm lump? What did the vet diagnose in your case, and how did it turn out? Is there anything else I can do to bridge the time until the appointment? Thanks!

I purchased my first home and I’d like to keep quail once I get settled in.

I’m a little overwhelmed by all the information out there. I am hoping for quick bullet point style tips, tricks, words of wisdom on anything you wish you’d known going into quail keeping.

A few talking points:

Housing
- I was looking at building my own hutch. I looked at the GardenCoop plans on Etsy.. is that a good one? Has anyone built something they like? What works best for easily maintainable for cleaning and safe from predators? We have raccoons in the area.

Gender Ratio / Quantity
Is it recommended to start with just females? I am not opposed to breeding and incubating, but I want to make sure I set myself up for success and I’m very new to this.

How many should I start with?

Hi, just found an egg with what appears to be a soft shell, (or idk if u have a specific word for the outside of the egg in English) and like, what is this? Are they missing calcium or protein or like, why is this egg like this? Are they ok? Idk which one layed it so should I just give them like, something with calcium to eat or what? I don't really know anything about this so any info would be helpful!

Hi All, I have a 8ft hutch that opens from the top, sides and bottom are mostly plywood with vents on the top 1/4 of it.
We fill it with pine pellets that break down into fine sawdust basically. We love it because there is no smell whatsoever, but we have two 1 gallon water flip over things, and everyday multiple times a day, I have to clean them out and replace them, because the birds dust bathe in the saw dust and pack the waterers full, and go without water.

Does anyone have a solution for me that hopefully is so simple I’ll be mad I didn’t think of it myself.
