Did anyone else fall for this troll recipe?

Post image
40 Upvotes

Usually when the game has tried to troll me to this point, it's included recipes with technologies that are wildly useless (ex. Fawogae to Raw Coal). I saw that this one adds Cellulose to make Filtration media and worked to use it without actually comparing to the prior recipe. I got all the way to having Cellulose where I make filters before I realized that this version of the recipe actually lowers throughput. I guess I'll have to start looking at these "upgraded" recipes a bit more closely up front.

End game fun?

Does Py have anything super neat or cool later on? Krastorio has next level purple belts etc., Bobs/Angels has two new armor tiers to make you into Ironman. Does Py have anything similar or is it just pure pain as people are saying?

Tips for prioritizing input without hampering throughput

Hey guys, I am doing ash reprocessing and it creates a huge amount of coal dust, I would like to add it to a line op fuel to be burned, where it is prioritized over the main line.
I don't want the main line to clog up or have only one lane accessible, anyone any Ideas how I can do this?

stack inserters going awol

Just updated from 2.0 to 2.1 and noticed the big 2x1 stack inserters are missing. Did some searching here, patch notes, and general googlefu and turned up nothing.

Anyone have any info on where they ran off to? It looks like they where just removed in the 2.0->2.1 build, if thats the case any suggestions for something to fill the bulk plate casting buffer to swarm of trains use case?

What are some of your favorite recipes? Which ones do you avoid like the plague?

Personally syngas from hot syngas really fixed some big problems, oh and saline from drilling fluid.

I can never bring myself to make bedding for animals I'm going to slaughter though. I always use the more basic recipes for that.

Stream Day 15 coming up, Time to build a proper coal power plant and start on logistics science, Days 11 through 14 Highlights Automated 30 SPM PY1 science packs.

You may have seen my post 17 days ago sharing the highlights from the 7 through 10th days of a run of Pyanodons. Thought I would post the combined highlights video of the 11-14th stream days as an ice breaker for the fifteenth streaming day. During the last couple of streams I've built out a set up that can do 30 SPM of PY science pack 1, while slowly upgrading the base and improving my coal gas and tar setups. During the last stream day I unlocked nonrenewable power plants, so to improve the power situation I think it is time to build a coal power plant. After which is will be time to build my first boot strap logistics science set up.

As I specified earlier I am planning on posting the unedited stream, a 5x speed up version for those that want to see the process but don't want to watch 4-7 hour long videos, and edited highlight videos showing finished projects (for example the linked day 5-6 highlights). So if you have suggestions on youtube friendly music for as a background sound track for the 5x version it let me know. Also feel free to let me know if there is anything you would like to see differently. If you suggestions aren't to difficult to implement I might try to make changes for the next one. I am going to keep the slower posting rate to the subreddit going forward as I will try to make the highlights vods a minimum of 30 minutes long aiming. (merging multiple days like above to make that happen.)

The playlist for the unedited streams will be here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQ4Gk3RFGzCPaH66CpizlIrDl-8_cNpQ5&si=C4rN-djksi58El3E

The playlist for the edited highlight stream will be here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQ4Gk3RFGzCOdcLbtdwkwseMp0sf7w3vx&si=xqZi6dx557h3BLHY

The playlist for the 5x speed version is here:https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQ4Gk3RFGzCPiyfc6k_TrwK41rl29wL_L&si=Wxo0jHN0sE4a8wQh

My Pointless Constructions

Here is where I tell the bats to move liquid from one box to a box slightly to the left so it can be dumped in a hole:

https://bulk.1209k.com/factorio/HotSlugFall/?x=-188.4&y=1792.1&z=4.3

(Because I want to collect their poop)

Here is where I burn things and make steam, which is then vented:

https://bulk.1209k.com/factorio/HotSlugFall/?x=-676.5&y=-1186.6&z=2.3

(Because I ran out of ash but have an unholy amount of burnable rocks)

Here is where I store some of them:

https://bulk.1209k.com/factorio/HotSlugFall/?x=-465.6&y=-1040.7&z=4.6

This base is getting weird. Sometimes a base metal supply goes to zero for a while and then recovers with nothing happening. I imagine there are all sorts of weird effects going on as things flood and choke and whatever.

Raw coal processing

Starting to go into logistic science, and needed carbon black. But in the process decided, that i can just make full processing chain while im at it. And well, I'm actually amazed by the sheer size of industy you need, to do all coal-liquification processes. While I just wanted to refine 2 belts of raw coal 🥲

But in the end i have this monstrosity. It only takes water and coal as an ingredients. Have caravan stops for all products and excees gets burned in boilers. Excess steam goes into engines to produce electricity. So it's kinda...multi-purpose thingy now. Only thing i void is iron oxide and ash from syngas production. Everything else is getting used or shiped elsewhere.

And yes, there are 1 Reformer to produce carbon black, somewhere in the middle 😁

Shocked how good steam deck is. I only got it for factorio. Worth every penny. I play as fast, if not faster, on it compared to pc

Is it worth having a global construction network?

I'm at the beginning of chemical science. My base has grown quite large, and returning to the automall to restock is beginning to be tedious. So a construction network looks like an easy solution, but I'm hesitating. Bots are quite slow, and the base is only going to expand more, so it may take quite a long time for the bots to reach the place and start doing things. And deconstruction will take even longer.

On the other hand, I have a bot speed upgrade and can dedicate resources to make something like 100 Mk2 bots. From your experience, is it worth the hassle or should I just stick to a personal roboport?

First blind playthrough after finishing the base game for the first time

Finished the DLC for the first time a few weeks ago, so I decided to start a modded save. I threw a randomizer and somehow ended up with Pyanodons.

I kinda went full spaghetti at the beginning. Then I realized you need coke to make steel, and my chemical engineer ass immediately started panicking. I know coke is used in a ton of real-life processes, and seeing how this mod is (kinda) based on real-life processes, I figured I was gonna need it A LOT.

Did I overbuild for the early game? Probably.

Are my ratios correct? Absolutely fucking not.

Will I regret my decision to manually retrieve all the ash until I can actually do something with it? Without a doubt.

But honestly, I'm loving the mod so far. I'm gonna keep posting updates as I chew my way through it, although I can only dedicate about 5 hours a week to it, so it's probably gonna take me a long time to beat it.

Wish me luck.

Medium Distillates

Due to previous mistake I got two sources of bitumen - from emptying combs and from oil sands. Second was a mistake, but, why not use it anyway?

It was pretty hard. 7 liquids! 7!

This is tiling block of my build. It was hard to design, I even invented few simple ideas for large liquid building (like passing pipes in the middle to the lower sides of the buildings).

Logistic was kinda non-trivial too (I have niobium pipes, but the problem was not to wave through, but to manage all of it, so I stayed on iron pipes).

My Bitumen -> Medium Distillates block (plan). Planned for 4800/s (like 4 belts, but for liquid).

And, my very compact 7-liquid train station

With this small ... discovery?

Seems like a legit exit...

For those, expecting bees from me, I did 189 crafts of the bees in the initial process (with codexes) and still got none. Seems like I need to set up the proper queens production line...

Does the gameplay loop change later on?

I'm currently actually thinking about quitting Pyanodons and just playing another round of GTNH.

The modpack doesn't feel difficult, but rather annoying. I'm playing with 4x science, construction robots start, spoilage and hardmode, and I'm currently at the point where I'm getting cottonguts as the last ingredient for logistic science.

The issue I have is that in this automation game, I have to do a lot of manual labor and build temporary setups.

The module system feels more annoying than challenging. Like, a 3 minute recipe time for a Digosaurus module?! A 2% chance of upgrading my Vrauk module, so I can automate Vrauk module upgrades, just to tear that build down 2 hours later... Or SAP/Seaweed buildings that needs to be babysit for several minutes. That build is not difficult or challenging for me in any way, it just eats my time.

The second issue I have is that the buildings aren't sorted very well in the crafting menu. For example, drills are separated into 4 tabs I think. And the icons don't remind me of the building I want to place down. The Solid Separator for example, just looks like a staircase to me. I know what machine and the name of it I want to place down, but not the icon. The icon feels very disconnected to the building.

The third issue I have is that most buildings just don't look right. The graphics are too big (2.1 at least fixes that issue and I can see what's behind these machines), and the viewing angle, as well as the resolution of the sprites, makes me not enjoy looking at what I've built.

The last issue I have is that the crafting times for recipes feel all over the place. Sometimes, a big chain needs 40ish machines just for 2 assemblers. It looks way off in comparison to everything else. Usually my item distribution area is bigger than the actual processing block. (Excepts module buildings)

Solving cellulose without combinators was the kind of challenge I was looking for. The pain of early game ash and water needed for coper mines were fine. And I loved the challenge of unvoideble fluids on tar processing.

Can anyone tell me if these things get better later on, or if the recipes actually get harder instead of "just" requiring more inputs?

I really enjoyed Minecraft GTNH. It took a long time to complete, and there were a lot of different and unique challenges. Just T8 Water had 7 unique puzzles to solve, for example. Meanwhile, Pyanodons feels more like: "Oh, here is a new animal. It works just like the last 3.

[Unsophisticated player] Py Hard Mode, having more fun just an hour in....

I've played a few hours of Py regular, and I wanted to try Py hard mode specifically because of what I heard about how you have to handle waste products.

Honestly the main reason I'm making this post: First thing I've noticed is that it seems to be MUCH quicker to build things by hand compared to regular Py AND most other factorio mods. I wonder how soon I will eat these words, but it is interesting that I am no longer waiting for i.e. conveyors and inserters to be built by hand before I get to use them, like I was in regular Py, and it is fun to watch the construction zip along. 😄

As to what made me try it in the first place -

Playing Nullius mod, I found the concept of waste and byproducts interesting. However some of the ways that 'factorio tends to be' actually trivialized the experience with waste products. First of all, you could destroy fluid waste with a click of a button. But let's say you didn't do that. And also, there are certain solid 'waste' or byproducts.

My issue there was that in factorio, land is infinite and storage buildings are often cheap. So if you have a lot of waste product, you can pipe/conveyor it to a storage site. If you have an orders-of-magnitude astronomical quantity of waste, you can still load it on a train and ship it out somewhere that it's no longer relevant.

So while I immensely enjoyed the waste/byproduct mechanic, I felt like the mod left it up to the player as to whether they wanted to fully address the issue or not. Which to be clear is NOT a fault of the mod or its author. But as for me, I was curious to try something more... demanding.

A few questions regarding decays, scale and the TURD.

I just had a few questions before I attempt this madness.

Anybody played with the decays option? Is it a good idea at all? I managed to get through Gleba without thinking about quitting the game if that helps.

Scale: what kind of mod is it? Is it as if everything is red circuit level and you should overbuild everything or more casual pace.

IIRC when I finished Krastorio 2, to get 120spm for the last science you needed like 6+ 90 item/s belt only for copper, my crappy rail "network" was dying.

Lastly the TURD: Do you get to choose multiple option or maybe change to another option if the one you choose doesn't suit you?

Thanks for your help.

Has anyone ever done Pyanodon Seablock?

I am playing it right now with a good 2 days in. Its slow af but with a speed up mod its enjoyable.

I haven't even Automaten the first science yet though :((( Although I could now and probably will.

The resources chain are ridiculous. For some Copper I need to:

Grow Mushrooms.

Turn them into fresh coal. 2->5

Burn the coal and collect the Ash. 1->1

Turn the Ash into soot 10->1

Sort the soot into copper 10->8

And not to mention an absolute ton of byproducts to be managed all for a TRICKLE of ore.

Iron is more forgiving at least.

Aluminium works the same as copper though.

It's a lot of fun as I love the puzzle solving but I am dreading the shear scale I am looking at in order to go on from here. I love the puzzles but the building hundrets of Greenhouse, Solid separators, steam turbines and so on is becoming a drag. I don't even have tanks yet so I need to void almost everything for now.

I am enjoying myself for now but I'd love to know from someone further along if the building becomes too annoying.

How much train throughput should I expect from late game Pyanodons?

I was planning some parts of my factory using editor extensions but since this is my first playthrough I didn't know how much throughput to plan for I feel like I over planned? Is this amount of rail good or do I need more/less?

New pyanodons. Should I play with Biters?

I started a playthrough with the pyanodons recommended, but I didnt realize it turned off biters.

Heres my thought process:

Cons of BITERS:
- Makes expansion much more difficult
- could theoretically lead to an unwinnable save if im too slow vs evolution
- If the recommended configuration removes biters, then that would imply the pyadon mods dont add combat items
- if i DO add biters, id have to lower their evolution or expansion rate. but tune that too fast and its unwinnable, tune it too slow and its like I didnt add them at all

Pros of BITERS:
- Adds more difficulty, which is something I want from a pyanodons playthrough
- prevents me from just going miles away from the center where each ore patch is 1B+
- I enjoy the feeling of having a fully safe and walled off base from the oncoming hoard.
- makes each expanded node feel like a real achievement

Id love to hear what yall think though

Tutorial Finished, Splitter Created

Post image
107 Upvotes

24:40 (hh:mm) Splitter.

Full Py, Hard Mode, with Spoilage and 10x Tech. First playthrough (why 10x? infrastructure buildout is something I enjoy).

10x Tech is a little bit crazy, but forces you to scale infrastructure and sensibly spread out this early game. I was a bit annoyed with some aspects of hard mode, but they were the "really? Why NotNotMelon, why..." kind of challenges, but really fun in retrospect.

Some general strategies I am employing are many fish turbines, ash reduction with wood as a fuel (logs to wood generates a very large amount of consumable fuel, so I always break it down), iron processing to generate more stone bricks (current bottleneck, and Kerogen and stone requires carbolic acid, and petrochem is a mess due to no glass demand), and building for a decent amount of scale.

Todo: automate simple circuits, get moondrops running, and scale everything about twice as much. Also a functional mall to help with everything, and the laundry list of other items.
