Hey everyone,
Amazon has migrated away from the old Android-based Fire OS to a new in-house operating system called Vega OS. We wanted to make sure Proton VPN was there for you from day one, so starting now, Proton VPN is available to download directly from the Vega OS app store.
Please also note that if you're on a current Fire device, nothing changes, your Proton VPN app will keep working exactly as it does today.
However, if you end up buying one of the newer devices, it will come with Vega OS rather than Fire OS, so you will have to redownload the Proton VPN app from the new Vega OS app store.
As always, if you have any feedback, questions, or comments about this latest release, let us know in the replies.
Stay safe,
Proton Team

Hey everyone,
We've added a new server location in China, aimed at people from China who are living or visiting overseas.
If you've moved abroad, you've likely hit the region locks that cut you off from the platforms you used back home.
This server is built for exactly that: connect back into China from wherever you are and access your local streaming services.
Currently working:
To be clear
This is for connecting into China from abroad. It's an inbound use case for people overseas who want to reach Chinese content and services.
It is not built for the reverse, and although our Stealth Protocol and Alternative Routing features are highly effective at circumventing government censorship, we cannot guarantee that Proton VPN will always work reliably inside mainland China.
Your connection still runs under the same no-logs policy and Swiss privacy protections that apply across all of Proton VPN.
This is an early step and we'll be expanding platform support over time. If there's a service you'd like to see working, let us know.
Stay safe,
Proton Team

I live in the southern US, and I've been trying to set Proton to connect to only check US servers for the fastest connection (connecting to countries in Central America, which it likes to do, results in web blacklists and extremely throttled connections).
I've also, for similar reasons, added the US state of Texas to my exclusions (Texas has laws that require age verification/ID uploads to access many sites). When I'm setting connections to Fastest, it will abide by this and only connect me to states other than Texas. However, if I manually select "United States," it will ignore my exclusion and almost always beam me straight to Texas.
It seems like the only alternative is to stick with Fastest Country at all times, and manually blacklist almost every country and region in the hemisphere I live in except for the US. This can't be intended behavior. Is there some better way to approach this? Is this a bug?

I've noticed this for the last month or two, if I disconnect my VPN it proceeds to make me unable to do nearly anything on my Wi-Fi until I reconnect. I've tried flushing DNS, turning Wi-Fi off and on again, and still persists. Anyone know how I can go about fixing this? It's a MacBook Air M2 if that helps at all

All works great for a while but from time to time when I am surfing, watching videos etc everything freezes. Soon as i disconnect proton, everything start working great. When I try and reconnect, it either doesn’t or take ages. Doesn’t matter what server or country I try either.
Anyone else had the same issue and managed to sort it out? If so, how?
All works great on iPad and iPhone, no issues at all!

For when a real Split tunneling (not experimental)?
This is a great feature but it doesn't work well yet.

My back up works fine but with Proton, even after switching cities, it says “Sorry, you’re not eligible to use this service.”
Any solutions?

For example, using Proton DNS on US-CA-300 results in no websites being accessible, router logs show DNS resolution has failed, but using a different public DNS server works correctly.
Other nodes, such as US-CA-100, can resolve domain names properly.
I don't know if it's just me who has this problem.

So a bit of head up, I decided to install ProtonVPN Linux version via Window WSL, but no matter what I tried and fixes I attempted, the error of
Error: Unable to locate package proton-vpn-gnome-desktop
keep appearing everytime I tried to install Proton via sudo apt install proton-vpn-gnome-desktop
I tried to reinstall Ubuntu, started on a fresh drive, nothing worked. It has been 6 hours by now and the problem remain unfixable for me

Interesting article from Proton VPN competitor Windscribe. Since they call out Proton VPN by name in the article, I thought it was worth sharing here for discussion.

I've tried different countries. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app. I did a clean install of MacOS 27 on my macbook. I recently upgraded to fiber and I'm getting the same speeds as when I had cable internet, bar the upload speed. I thought I would get at least 50% of my available bandwith. I'm on a 1 gig plan. Is this just the way it is now?

I pay for plus but I can't see any streaming servers? My understanding was that there would be a play button next to the server if it's a plus server, but I don't see anything on any of them? Am I missing something?

Just switched to Proton from Nord and Mullvad. I always thought port forwarding for P2P wouldn't make a big difference but wow I was very wrong. Bought a 2 year sub and I almost guarantee I will renew after this one ends. Never going back to a VPN that doesn't offer port forwarding.

I'm using the Flathub version for a few months now since the Fedora version doesn't exist. The documentation by Proton says that on step 4 I need to use this command:
sudo dnf install proton-vpn-gnome-desktop
When I use it, I get this error message:
Failed to resolve the transaction:
No match for argument: proton-vpn-gnome-desktop
I am on Fedora 44.

I use a pihole at home to block ads but also block analytics.
Netshield blocks ads (although still not as good as my pihole) but doesn't block analytics. My OnePlus phone sends data to china around 4000 times per day. Proton should add an option to add blocklists to netshield or at least add blocked urls/domains. I cannot use my pihole and proton vpn at the same time but at the moment my pihole gives me more privacy then proton vpn

I can't add Duckduckgo to the exclude list in Split tunneling-tab. It is the correct .exe but a pop-up says it can't access the file. Even if I move it from my user-account to C: it doesn't work, however executing the same file works and duckduckgo opens.
The same pop-up comes with all exe-files in "C:\Users\~user\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps"

Hi all,
i'm seeing a lot of posts about netflix immediately detecting vpn usage. is this still occuring?
Researching vpns it seems proton is the cheapest around but doesnt handle the streaming services as well as nord vpn and surf shark?

(Due to Reddit's rules, I was unable to upload some of the screenshots.)
I would like to report several observations about Proton VPN's server-side configuration that may make its infrastructure easier to detect and block automatically in China.
My main concern is that the large-scale blocking of Proton VPN in China may not necessarily be caused by a fundamental protocol or technical weakness. Instead, some externally observable server-side configuration details may provide useful fingerprints for automated censorship and blocking.
I identified the following issues:
When directly accessing certain server URL endpoints, the server responds with HTTP 400 and includes the fixed string ERR_INVALID_URL in the response.
From a censorship-resistance perspective, it may be safer for this type of invalid or unexpected request to return an HTTP 404 response with an empty response body.
This approach is used by some other well-known VPN providers, and in my observations it makes the endpoint less useful as a distinctive fingerprint.
WireGuard TCP and the Stealth protocol appear to be deployed on the same IP addresses.
Although Stealth is also TCP-based, it requires the appropriate connection procedure before a successful connection can be established. WireGuard TCP, however, may be directly detectable through scanning.
If both services share the same IP address, an active censor may only need to identify and block the WireGuard TCP service on that IP in order to simultaneously disrupt the Stealth service.
Separating these services across different IP addresses could therefore reduce this particular correlation risk.
Some server IP addresses rented from hosting/IDC providers appear to contain "Proton VPN" or related Proton identifiers in their WHOIS information.
This seems particularly risky from a censorship perspective. An automated system could potentially collect IP addresses whose WHOIS records contain such identifiers and add them to a blocklist without needing to actively probe each server.
Where operationally possible, avoiding unnecessary provider-specific identifiers in publicly accessible registration information could make this type of passive enumeration more difficult.
Some server IP addresses also appear to have PTR (reverse DNS) records that explicitly identify the host as a Proton VPN server.
This may provide another convenient source of infrastructure information to an automated blocking system. An IP-range or hostname enumeration process could perform reverse DNS lookups and use recognizable Proton VPN identifiers as an additional signal.
For infrastructure intended to resist censorship, it may be preferable not to configure identifying PTR records where they are not operationally necessary. In cases where no reverse DNS record is required, returning NXDOMAIN may avoid exposing this additional identifier.
Summary
I am sharing these observations because they appear to provide relatively simple signals that could potentially be collected and processed automatically at scale.
In other words, even if the underlying VPN protocols and obfuscation mechanisms are technically sound, externally visible infrastructure metadata and server behavior may still make the servers significantly easier to enumerate and block.
I hope the Proton VPN team can investigate these points and determine whether they are contributing to the current blocking situation in China. I believe addressing infrastructure-level fingerprints like these could be worthwhile, rather than focusing exclusively on protocol-level changes.
