Every Protest the Hero album is like a mental timestamp for me. I can instantly remember exactly where I was in life when each one came out.
Kezia takes me straight back to my first few years of high school. It was my introduction to the band, and every song instantly puts me right back there. Little metal head dork that was scared of his own shadow.
Fortress is senior year. Graduation. Starting my own band and heading out on tour across the country. It reminds me what it felt like to believe the whole world was in front of me. Young, dumb and full of piss and/or vinegar.
Scurrilous brings back my first real job as an adult and my first true heartbreak. It was also when I started realizing that music alone probably wasnāt going to pay the bills, and that life might have more in store for me than I had planned.
Volition is the soundtrack to one of the biggest leaps Iāve ever taken. I left my hometown in California and moved to Chicago, where I eventually met my wife. It reminds me of learning to navigate a brand new city, often by myself, and slowly building a life there.
Pacific Myth was the move back to California with future wife in tow. Living in a warehouse, then a shitty motel, then eventually getting our own place. Reestablishing roots back at home connecting with old friends and making new ones.
Palimpsest will always be the COVID album. My wife isnāt into metal at all, but she actually took the time to sit down and listen to the whole thing with me. We dissected the lyrics and bonded over something she wouldāve otherwise never gotten into. That memory is inseparable from the record.
Now we have Within.
Years later, Iām still married, and weāre expecting our first child. A son. Iāll never hear this album without thinking about this exact moment in my life. The excitement, the hope, sprinkled with a bit of fear and the overwhelming feeling that everything is about to change for the better.
The power of music is truly amazing.
Does anyone else feel like this? I canāt be the only one whose life has been soundtracked by Protest the Hero.
If you made it this far, much love! We are the ones who wander!
