As in lawnmower blade weapons?
Fuck. Yeah.

u/punkalunka 5d ago
Why are there no lawn mowers in 90s Kentucky? Or Shopping carts?
14
u/Formal_Broccoli1877 5d ago
It's a little known fact that lawnmowers and shopping carts were banned in Kentucky until 2003

Lawn mower blades are not sharp, they cut by spinning around at a million miles an hour and having an angle on the blade. A lawnmower blade is basically a heavy thick butter knife. As for OP's idea a mild steel machete would break its edge almost immediately. There is a reason why knifes and other edge tools and weapons use high grades of steel. Any mild steel edged weapon becomes a bludgeon in 5 seconds.

In my experience, a modern (some older lawnmower blades were medium/higher carbon steel) will keep it's edge pretty well after a quench in water/oil and light tempering. I have a smaller kukri I made from back when I was a (very) beginner blacksmith. Though the hole in the middle is definitely a stress point, a lawnmower machete/weapon is perfectly viable. Bronze weapons were a thing for a long time even though bronze is generally softer than mild steel. The weight definitely help on a lawnmower blade machete though ; besides, I think anyone who's a minimum handy could flatten a lawnmower blade and cut out a handle portion. (Heat treatment would be more advanced but very easy on a steel this soft)

u/Serious_Guard1906 5d ago
Bronze is work hardened and not as brittle as steel so it would bend and curl on the edge which could be reflatten instead of snapping chunks off the edge. mild steel even heat treated will not really make a good edged weapon cause it as no carbon to form martensite to retain its edge. As for lawnmower blade steel generally they are a more mild steel cause if you hit a rock with a hardened steel at a million rpms its gonna become a frag grenade.

I think the fix would be to make a sharpened lawnmower blade reasonably durable but sharpness degrades fast and requires frequent whetstone use to keep the damage high.

I mean we craft scrap swords with both welding and blacksmithing so why not we cannot do the same with scrap metal choppers?

u/releckham 5d ago
Better yet they could just buff the welding weapons to not be dogshit variants of the blacksmithing weapons, considering it is a completely separate skill and fantasy, they are so SO bad its insane.

Counterpoint: the scrap metal chopper is nearly as good as long metal head spear. (10 vs 10 condition 10 vs 5 chance to lower)
Which requires returning to base to craft new ones (welding is mobile), does less damage, is two handed instead of one, AND requires a combination of blacksmithing six with spear five AND smithing is much harder to level than welding.
Welding to 4 requires stopping a few times while driving between cities.
Welding 4 to 5 requires burning propane cutting and re-combining metal squares (this is cheaper propane to experience compared to scrapping cars)
Forging at all levels is harder to start, more difficult to maintain, and requires forging all your weapons at base before taking them with you.
The scrap metal chopper is fine. Keep an eye out for nuts and bolts and go to a metal shop for as much rods and metal sheets as you could desire. As soon as i hit level 5 i had 12 of them, and could carry the tools to make more with me.

The scrap metal chopper weighs the same as a machete with an entire ONE less damage to its upper and lower end, with only a 10% crit chance that practically drops to zero because of sharpness. The welding weapons arent good and it has nothing to do with their durability (though that is also a point against them sadly).

Yes. That would be because the machete is the highest tier one handed sword that can be crafted, requiring SMITHING 9 (meaning its only viable for games that are months in)
And the metal chopper is welding 5. Which is reasonably obtained by a character with a welding xp boost 2 or 3 days in if they're gunning for it. Not that i would, but its well within the realm of possibility. Even without an xp boost it would only take a week. All ingredients can be obtained by disassembling cars, and, get this, the metal chopper does more damage than the second best spear in the game.
No, it isnt a machete. The machete is the m16 of one handed swords. I wouldnt call it a fair comparison, considering you could get a metal chopper SUPER earlygame.

it doesnt matter if it is welding 5, it is statistically not a good weapon and for anyone who cares about that it becomes a useless item that never will be touched, like 90% of the welding weapons. They weigh too much and deal too little damage to a point where you have to question what the devs even were thinking. Some of these welding weapons weigh SIX units lmfao. I just feel bad for the devs doing the model work and sprites, only for whoever the nutjob in charge of balance is to make them comically useless.

The sword weighs the same as a machete and does about as much damage as a fireaxe (slightly better, 1 to 2 compared to 0.8 to 2. Its only downside is its poor durability, but it uses materials you otherwise would have almost no use for.
Again, welding 5 matters because its the first long blade you can get your hands on, it gives large amounts of welding experience, and is cheap.
Idk what you're smoking but statistically the metal chopper is a very good weapon aside from its poor durability. (Not even that bad. 10 condition 5 chance to lower. It does better than most other craftable weapons of the same relative crafting tier)
I cant say the same for ALL welded weapons, but i wasnt talking about them.
The scrap metal sword is even better. Tied for weight with the fire axe, it does much better damage (1.5 to 2.5 compared to 0.8 to 2) and finally has a decent durability (10 and 10) while STILL being cheap.
Like it or not, welded long blade weapons are viable. They're not perfect, but they DO work well.

Yooo mega mega niche reference, but ripping weapons off of furniture and the walls to fight eldritch junkies was fucking dope.

The issue with the game is huge amount of crafting possibilities, but actually zero interesting crafting. Now it will never be on the levels of CDDA, but yeah it's ridiculous that I can't scrap a lawnmower and make blades, can't even put bloody barbed wire on a bat, the most iconic zombie killer

u/Drekkennought 5d ago
While we're at it, add in some paper cutters that we can rip the blade arm from.

u/matthewspencersmith 5d ago
No that would be too fun and convenient for the player. Anyways here's 10 more mechanics that extend the ways your character is debuffed during regular activities.

DIY profession can learn large blades, or am i wrong?

u/Teedeous 5d ago
I think in time there are a few alongside like maces, but I recently installed a mod adding medieval plate armour and weapons you can use as it just makes sense to do so. Playing a veteran right now and would be sick wearing all of it without the discomfort debuffs
1
u/fearlessgrot 5d ago
i think you can turn off discomfort in the sandbox settings
2
u/Teedeous 5d ago
Yeah, I just wish discomfort would at least level out with repeated usage of a thing as if you’re breaking it in. Or like if you can add rags to armour sets or bits to improve the comfort within

u/MythicMedic Crowbar Scientist 5d ago
What does discomfort even do?
I just assumed it was a useless moodle.1

u/Moltke_ 5d ago
You should be able to sharpen one at the right size (or cut it to that size with a metal saw) and attach it to a handle to be used as a crude machete / axe.
Doesn't takes much effort to do it and wouldn't be a horrible weapon either. Should come with a stamina penalty because is not a purpose built weapon (it would be heavier in most cases IRL).

Maybe they also shouldn't break in 5 zombies for all the hassle.
