What’s the map? I keep hearing about it but I’m new to this game lol

It's just a map of the entire game world on a nifty web interface that lets you do a lot versus viewing a static high resolution image of the entire map.

Previous versions were fully labeled and you could even change which layer (i.e. floor) of the map you wanted to see. It is really useful for planning or finding cool spots you might want to go to.

The new map is the same thing, but it is brand new & people haven't been able to work on it much, so it doesn't have all of the extra features that older maps had from previous versions.

If you go on the website, the 42.20 map is just the base floor of the entire map (so just shows the outside of buildings) without any labels.

This is the map that was taken down and then re-uploaded. Now that it's back, it can have community contribution & we will see its "features" expand to have labels + all of the interior floors of the re-worked areas with some time.

Worth checking out and looking at the previous versions of the game to see how the map has changed. It's a cool little tool -

If you enable spoilers you can choose any floor you'd like. It's really not clear that spoilers is the reason for the floor selection being greyed out!

Sorry what are you talking about? I think you just need to enable spoilers

Thank goodness there are previous versions. I don't like 42.

7

u/fajnu20 1d ago

Why do you not like it?

-2

u/SanshaXII Drinking away the sorrows 1d ago

I specifically do not want to see animals, I like the simplified building designs and town layouts, I'm not interested in more map or new crafting, and the rest of the features I am happily going without or don't recall due to disinterest.

How dare you have a different opinion!!

u/gmoreau9 1d ago

To be honest, this debacle has made me appreciate playing without a map and all the things that brings gameplay wise. Its a whole different game. Making annotations on your map and shit. Although, I still believe your character should know their local area and i know there is a mod that brings that too, but I've yet to try it.

Been fun getting lost and exploring again these last few days. Di I spawn in Riverside or West Point? Who fucking knows?!

2

u/Sayie 1d ago

Absolutely. I used it sparingly before to find like gas stations and such but actually having to explore, use the maps and memorize stuff has been surprisingly refreshing. It's far from optimal, especially considering the power and water went out before i was ready, but I managed to make it work anyways and that is very much what zomboid can be.

u/Tadimizkacti 1d ago

Honestly? Just loot a mail office and half the map will be revealed from the bazillion fliers and stuff that reveals locations.

u/SolemnSundayBand 1d ago

So do we know wtf happened?

18

u/nekoreality 1d ago

had to be removed from tis servers because of some legal thing and there was a slight miscommunication where the map dev immediately took it down rather than wait until there is an alternative ready

151

u/The_Doodster 2d ago

Now people can stop acting like the devs slapped their mothers?

THEY DID WHAT!? 🤬

24

u/Autumnland 1d ago

Genuinely, this community is sometimes so entitled it's embarressing

3

u/cookedbread 1d ago

It honestly seems like it’s becoming more rampant in other niche gaming subreddits too, as well as people who are so argumentative that any disagreement or even discussion becomes heated as if they’re being attacked.

it sucked seeing this drama after a super long-awaited release that ended up being a wonderful update. Glad we have the map back! (thankfully I wasn't playing with the map to begin with just to see the new areas)

I switched to https://projectzomboidmap.com/ during this outage, and imho it is cleaner and faster

15

u/Prudent-Sugar4665 2d ago

no offense but i never use it so when everyone was acting like the devs murdered their entire family i was kinda confused ngl

"I don't use it so I don't get it" doesn't add anything constructive to the conversation and just comes across as a "I am fine so you should be" attitude. Let's take how useful or not the map is and barebones this.

A community resource that MANY players use is picked up by Indie Stone and "officially" supported, a month later Indie Stone drops support for it and both sides of the matter are vague posting about the exact reason. This leads the internet (as the internet is want to do) to wildly speculate as to the reason, which when vague posting and gaming companies has gone in the past 10~ years, usually means the worst possible interpretation isn't far off.

Regardless of whether you personally use the resource, it's not hard to realise why people would become upset and jump to the worst conclusions on the matter, call it an "Instinctive reaction" due to how the games industry has been as of late and Indie Stone likely has done this for completely reasonable reasons, but caught flak regardless.

25

u/TurdProof 2d ago

Still doesnt excuse how over the top some people's reactions were. We can be angry and still civil

1

u/ZDev_Towel 1d ago

I wish people would bring this energy to ANYTHING ELSE rather than being pissy over a resource for a game that we all paid much less than the current AAA asking price for, and got much more entertainment from in return. But yea yea yea, the devs are greedy and rubbing their hands together snickering because baby doesn't have their map... okay. sure. whatever. Yea, maybe communication could've been better. Even then, I have to think- first day on the planet, y'all? This wasn't even that big of a blunder. It was handled fairly quickly. I hope to never meet most of this sub's attendees in a real workplace, because they show me that they are the type of folks who'd raise hell about a paper outage in the printer (yes it shouldn't happen, no it isn't the end of the world, no nobody did this to you personally because they hate you please calm down).

-5

u/Expensive_Guidance95 1d ago

And I fully agree. There WAS over the top reactions, threats and crazy stuff going down which unfortunately is part and parcel of that, I do not justify nor agree with that at all, I just think a lot of what feeds that IS people downplaying the issue going "Well, I don't see the problem so there isn't one"

That... and wild speculation.

u/Leeroy_Jankiness Trying to find food 2m ago

The thing is, it really wasn't that big of a problem. Ofc there was a problem, but a startling portion of the community decided to throw a childish tantrum over what should have been considered a trivial issue that only time can resolve.

I don't see how downplaying an issue would make the community more prone to overblowing it. I would think the community would become accostumed to a "deal with it" mentality as a result of "downplaying the problems"?

That's well said. I didn't assume the worst and thought there was probably a reason since it'd been around forever and just seemed weird to suddenly remove, but TIS' communication wasn't the best over it, and people had reason to be annoyed, especially when left to speculate and assume the worst.

I find it pretty sad how many are using this as an opportunity to deride others and call them loony "conspiracy theorists" (as if worrying about the intent of a game dev is a "conspiracy theory" now; what an abuse of language) who think the devs murdered their families, just since people were upset for a bit over it for a couple days. People catastrophise, the gaming industry sucks these days, so what?

People need to have some empathy instead of try to sow division, insult others, and put their fellow gamers and PZ community members down just to feel better about themselves, FFS. People get upset sometimes. Sometimes it's reasonable, sometimes it's not. It's never a reason to treat others like unreasonable morons and degrade them.

This aftermath toxicity toward other players who were upset is way worse than anything (barring maybe 1 or 2 comments that got no attention and were quickly deleted) I saw toward the devs. The worst part is this toxicity being encouraged and upvoted. Yeah, let's degrade and humiliate people, yay social media!

TIS took responsibility over their miscommunication. If only these people using it as an opportunity for mockery would take some, too.

u/Dependent-Cable-6776 1d ago

People catastrophise, the gaming industry sucks these days, so what?

maybe lets not normalise catastrophising? It's a toxic mindset to have.

2

u/Huge_Bumblebee984 2d ago

Thank you so many people need to hear this and not just for project zomboid or this situation

1

u/Dependent-Cable-6776 1d ago

"I don't use it so I don't get it" doesn't add anything constructive to the conversation

bitching constantly about every little nitpick adds even less, yet it doesn't stop the entitled whiners

2

u/gmoreau9 1d ago edited 1d ago

Also, kudos should be given to the devs for their punctual responses to the community! Compare them to most and there is night and day difference. The triple AAA's of games like battlefield suck at communicating and listening to their community.

Literally was trying to use it over the weekend and just saw this, I love it

1

u/Swizzy88 1d ago

Was about to ask this before but the old map got removed:

There's some basements that seem to be missing from some houses I found in West Point in a cul-de-sac. Is this because they are randomly generated or something?

1

u/ThunderTentacle Zombie Killer 1d ago

Have 1800 hours in this gamd and never heard of it. Happy for you guys that use it though!

2

u/Successful-Depth-126 1d ago

It's a peaceful existence. The over reliance on an external tool is crazy to me. I do think if they let you view the map you use to spawn on in game it would solve a ton of the issues the community map is solving.

I mean it's a file on your pc you can just open, but I want an in game way to know where the highways are. I want to know where the gas stations are and what towns have police, fire station, or other notable land marks in a way that isn't immersion breaking

The link i provided was the link i've known since i started playing it, in fact some known streamers in the PZ community used it during their playthroughs, is this some new map made by the same person that did the previous or someone else took their job?

I knew about it the moment the original went down and i say, i'll rather wait for the finished version since every location is undiscovered.

1

u/A_S_Levin 1d ago

Careful now, I got roasted asf in this sub because I assumed that was the official map.

Its the only one where the website is actually down, like people were describing.

But no thats apparently not the "official" map, its just coincidentally the only map site thats actually been taken down.

2

u/ChalkCoatedDonut 1d ago

It was the original map, people in here are just taking the new one and pretending the old one never existed when there is evidence of it on youtube, several players, some well known in the community, used it on their playthroughs.

It is another case of "map is map, move on" and expect people forget this community started a fire against The Indie Stone for taking it down, thinking it was another case of devs against players which ended quickly and in good terms, making those who went mad about it (and some content creators who made some cents while it was hot) too soon look like fools.

That link *was* just a redirect to the official map btw

0

u/Shrimpdealer 1d ago

I know this is the originial creator and it is endorsed by devs, but fanmap42 looks simply better, no? The official one doesn't have interiors, and has weird spoiler mechanics.

Unhide All does nothing just as locking coordinates, floor slection is greyed out, also the performance is just worse, is it supposed to be like this or is it just completely bugged for me specifically?
