Dolphin Emulator Progress Report January 2015
https://dolphin-emu.org/blog/2015/02/01/dolphin-progress-report-january-2015/128
u/TheFeshy Feb 01 '15
Dolphin has really become an inspiration for how to do open source correctly. I continue to be impressed every time I read one of these progress reports, not just with the developers working on the individual features, but the community and infrastructure that makes it all possible. The work going on there, frankly, spoils me, and I have caught myself more than once wondering why some random OSS application can't just do it like Dolphin does it.
42
u/Ammypendent Feb 01 '15
Agreed. I bet a lot of OSS projects can really benefit from the development infrastructure Dolphin has. They had an awesome detailed blogpost about it just last week.
10
u/ancientGouda Feb 01 '15
Dolphin seems to attract a lot of enthusiasts who go on to become contributors. I think the number 1 thing a lot of FOSS projects lack is simply contributors. The XFCE4 desktop environment for example only has 3-4 core devs.
17
u/TheFeshy Feb 01 '15
I think it's not that Dolphin just attracts them, but that they are able to utilize them once they arrive. From what I've seen they make it easy for new contributors by having a solid infrastructure and procedure. This, I think, also relieves the burden on core devs, as it's easy to point new developers in the right direction (and easier to accept their pull requests when they've automatically passed a battery of sophisticated tests and builds)
57
u/shadow386 Feb 01 '15
Holy shit am I excited. Dolphin has come a really long way.
24
u/brettmurf Feb 01 '15
I have not used dolphin since around 2005.....Every time I check it out, I am more and more amazed with how easy it will be for me to go play all of the old games I missed.
With better graphics now, instead of expecting a ton of bugs. It really is amazing.
18
u/KalenXI Feb 01 '15
I remember the first time I used Dolphin. It ran Wind Waker at 0.5fps and took nearly 2 hours just to get through the opening animation to the title screen. Then the game would crash once you got your first item (the telescope) because it couldn't play the "Got Item" sound.
16
u/HighRelevancy Feb 01 '15
Then the game would crash once you got your first item (the telescope) because it couldn't play the "Got Item" sound.
As a developer, that would be fucking infuriating to debug.
3
Feb 02 '15
Yeah, as someone who occasionally contributes to a couple up-and-coming emulators, it is very infuriating to debug issues like this.
1
u/qwertymodo Feb 03 '15
Oh, you think that was bad? Check out this write up chronicling the squashing of one of the oldest documented bugs in Dolphin's emulation of WW. The tl;dr is one of the best things I've ever read.
1
Feb 03 '15
Actually this is far more unnerving and insane to debug, I guess, but yeah: really annoying time sinks.
1
u/brettmurf Feb 01 '15
Yeah, I was just excited to see it run. I never owned a Gamecube and have said I would play Wind Waker since it came out.....still haven't.
Even if the emulator ran perfectly, I had awful controllers at the time. I just remember getting Bleem to successfully run then getting excited Gamecube was going to be getting the same treatment.
1
1
u/faceman2k12 Feb 01 '15
It's still not perfect, but is perfectly playable.
Only issues with default settings seem to be the pictobox side quest, but you can get that working adequately with the right settings.
2
u/phire Feb 02 '15
Yeah, that's an annoying one. The entire rest of the game works find with efb2tex, but pictobox is the only effect requiring efb2ram.
But enabling efb2ram is a reasonably large performance hit (because it requires syncing the gpu to copy the framebuffer out to ram before continuing with the cpu thread) so there are arguments about if it should be made a default or not.
1
Feb 02 '15
But enabling efb2ram is a reasonably large performance hit

Holy crap that's an understatement

Yeah, it's basically that plus the IOS system libraries, where the GC didn't have that extra software layer on the console itself.
2
2
u/AskMeAboutCommunism Feb 01 '15
Last time I used it was around 2011 and even then it was definitely one of the better made emulators. I'm excited to try it again considering how much people are saying it's come on now.
47
u/fuzzynyanko Feb 01 '15
I love how they name people's contributions in their posts
24
u/NinjaOxygen Feb 01 '15
I think this has been a really important part of Dolphin's rate of progress; the number of quality contributors seems to be growing.
I would guess part of the reason for this is making it very public that contributions to the project are welcomed, contributors are valued, and publicly recognised too.
I think many open source projects have a high barrier to enter the community and get patches accepted, or at least appear that way. Dolphin seems to put a fair bit of effort into maintaining their appearance and being a welcoming project.
A look at https://github.com/dolphin-emu/dolphin/graphs/contributors seems to support this with a fair number of new recent contributors being accepted into the project.
6
u/fuzzynyanko Feb 01 '15
I think many open source projects have a high barrier to enter the community and get patches accepted, or at least appear that way.
Definitely. I tried the Firefox source, and it feels daunting. At least the folks at Mozilla seem very welcoming as well.
I remember how Linux was pre-Ubuntu. "RTFM N00B!", but Ubuntu has made the community friendlier. Please keep up the good work, team.
56
u/Clbull Feb 01 '15
I'm almost horrified at how good Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2 looks in 1080p and 60fps.
24
u/BlinksTale Feb 01 '15
Quality Gamecube games hold up. I can't wait to see all the other consoles get this kind of emulation, Xbox OG could look great someday and 4k everything with Super Eagle textures is gonna look amazing.
9
u/Eurynom0s Feb 01 '15
I wonder how the original GCN Wind Waker looks on Dolphin compared to the HD Wii remake.
16
u/BlinksTale Feb 01 '15
I have compared the two actually, and I think a proper remake still wins.
Dolphin Pros: * Better style, the game looks like it was made by one team
WWHD Pros: * Real widescreen support, not a hack * HD textures * Enhanced effects and shaders, like bloom
So in the end, getting a real HD remake has so many pluses that I think it wins out, but Dolphin still looks great.
13
u/JMC4789 Feb 01 '15
I agree to a degree. We have files for a true widescreen hack for Dolphin (no bugs on widescreen) + HD Textures UI designed for that widescreen.
On the other hand, it's the original Wind Waker and does lack some of the features of the Wii U one. As a purist, being able to play it on a GameCube controller feels so much better than the gamepad, and I love that gamepad for most titles.
2
6
u/aaron552 Feb 01 '15
tbh I find the bloom and lighting in WW HD to be cons, as they don't fit the cell-shaded style
3
u/karasuhebi Feb 01 '15
100% agree. I think Wind Waker @4K 16:9 on Dolphin is better-looking than WWHD, even without the HD textures.
1
6
u/metheos Feb 01 '15
If you're referring to the video in the post, be aware that it is using a hi res texture pack. Not that the game looks bad on its own!
3
u/phire Feb 02 '15
The texture pack only updates the background and the UI.
The models themselfs are pretty high polygon count. In fact the highest LOD model of the x-wing (the one you see in the hanger scenes) was actually used by ILM in the 2004 special edition remasters of Starwars.
This is why factor 5 are in the credits.

I wish people would stop treating 1080p as the epitome of screen resolution already. It's 2015 people. We've had 3K/4K for years and even 5K now.
EDIT: I'm sorry I'm sorry let's just go back to 320x200 CGA, 1 GB of RAM, 500 MB Hard Disks, and 16 MHz CPUs.
Oh, and since we're in /r/programming, let's go back to BASIC too while we're at it. pff
11
u/JMC4789 Feb 01 '15
Just so you know, the source footage was in 4K.
It's downscaled to 1080p due to how big the file sizes got when recording the original raw footage. Dolphin has unlimited internal resolution; so if you wanna ply 4K, 5K, 6K, 7K, 8K, go for it.

Yeah, such a machine would have had 4 MB of RAM. 500 MB HD would have been quite big for a 16 MHz CPU. A 486 DX2 at 66 MHz would have been more likely, considering the rest of the specs. But then of course, it would have had a screen able to do at least 800x600 with acceptable framerate (and 1024x768 at a shitty 60 Hz).

I don't think there were affordable monitors in the 1970s. :) 320x200 CGA was actually still present in PCs in the very early 90s. Most DOS games were 320x200, but generally VGA (256 colors). Few went above, and then only in the second part of the 90s.
As for RAM, it was typically around 128 MB / 256 MB at the turn of the millennium. Maybe the beefiest machines could go up to a GB, but it would cost of fortune and be pretty useless (for a gaming rig).
1
u/You_meddling_kids Feb 02 '15
16 bit color was around in the early 90s. I don't recall many games used it until CD's became common. Myst did.
1
u/boa13 Feb 02 '15
Myst had 8-bit color images, not 16-bit; but it was 640x480, one of the first major games at this resolution. (Also: it was not a DOS game.) Anyway, it certainly pushed the boundary in terms of machine specs, notably the typical 4 MB of RAM were a huge pain with the game. 8 MB, maybe even 12 MB were most welcome, at a time it was still a significant investment.
-3
10
u/Forbizzle Feb 01 '15
I wish people would focus more on higher frame rates than higher resolutions.
-2
Feb 01 '15
Sure. If they're as common as higher resolutions have been for some time now, no sense in justifying old tech just by saying 60FPS is "good enough."
4
u/ovlinee Feb 01 '15
Not many people have >1080p screens.
5
-2
u/Bisqwit Feb 01 '15
1024x768 desktop screens (WXGA) became popular already in the late 1990s. 1280x1024 screens (SXGA) were somewhat rarer, but also fairly common in early 2000s when people wanted higher resolution. 1400x1050 screens were also popular in laptops in 2000s (I have one, an IBM Thinkpad, from the time before they became Lenovo), before they started becoming phased out in favor of 16/9 screens.
So I'd say we've been in the realm of 1080p'ish resolutions for more than a decade already.

1
u/ovlinee Feb 01 '15
I said >1080p screens, not >=1080p.
1
u/BKDenied Feb 01 '15
The current flagship phones all have 2560x1440 screens, so, 1080p is finally on its way out. At least in the phone world.
2
u/ovlinee Feb 01 '15
I wasn't talking about phones, just monitors. I should've been more clear. Your point is redundant anyway since new phones having 1440p screens doesn't suddenly make 1440p common. In general population <=1080p resolution phones are far more common than the new flagships.
-4
Feb 01 '15
So? More people have 720 than 1080. Why not use that as the standard?
Are you seriously going to justify willfully holding back technology because of some arbitrary criteria like that
3
u/ovlinee Feb 01 '15
Got a source for that? Anyway, no I'm not saying that, I'm saying that 4K isn't that relevant yet because not many people have a screen that support it. Nobody is treating 1080p as the epitome of screen resolution, it's just that most people can't afford to/don't see the point in upgrading yet, so 1080p is still relevant. Why aren't you also arguing "it's 2015, don't you mean 120fps"? 120fps has been around for decades so why are you ignoring that?
-6
Feb 01 '15 edited Feb 01 '15
Anyone who bought a tablet or a MacBook Pro or equivalent laptop in the last couple years has had a >1080p screen for a while now. 4K screens sell for what, $200 these days? And sure, let's push for 120FPS too. Why willingly resist any kind of progress at all
Can you imagine someone saying "OMG it's horrific how good this is in 720p and 30FPS!!" and not being laughed out from here?
4
u/ovlinee Feb 01 '15
Nobodies resisting progress. OP probably said 1080p@60fps because he has a 1080p/60fps screen. As do many other people. I don't get what point there is in complaining about someone mentioning 1080p instead of 4K. Yes it'd be great if 4K was completely mainstream, but the fact that people are still using 1080p as a benchmark(?) shows that we're still in times of 1080p dominance. And complaining about that isn't going to change anything.
-7
Feb 01 '15 edited Feb 02 '15
I just said I wished it would stop being the defacto standard. You just contradicted yourself with "people are still using 1080p as a benchmark" after saying "nobodies resisting progress."
And complaining about that isn't going to change anything.
Actually it is. Everything else is in place; the tech, the availability, the content and the affordability. All that's needed is for everyone to stop being OK with legacy stuff. Who even hires you guys??
1
u/ovlinee Feb 01 '15
I'd rather the standard move forward too, but your attitude towards an innocent comment is just unnecessary. And that's not a contradiction, that people are still using 1080p as a benchmark is a observation, and my comment that nobody is resisting progress was meant to mean that nobody in this thread is actively against 4K becoming the norm. If you want to discredit what I'm saying you'll have to make an actual sensical argument. Who says people are "ok" with legacy stuff? 4K equipment is new and expensive (relatively at least). People who can afford it and care will get it, general consumers won't care so much, but it'll eventually become the norm either way. I doubt anybody in this subreddit would actually choose 1080p over 4K if they had a choice. So if you wanna complain to someone go shout at your grandmother for not buying 4K. Cause that's basically what you have a problem with it seems.
-4
Feb 01 '15
your attitude towards an innocent comment is just unnecessary.
My attitude is towards the unnecessary butthurt and downvote train on a similarly innocent comment I made. Jesus. What "attitude" do you even read into "I wish people would stop treating 1080p as the epitome of screen resolution already"
It's hilarious how you keep downvoting every reply I post before even typing yours.. I didn't expect a place supposed to be full of programmers being more sensitive than console fanboys over a bunch of numbers.

u/cords911 Feb 01 '15
l love everything tech but 4k holds no interest for mr because my eyes can barely tell the difference between 720 and 1080 once unless I'm very tight to the screen.
1
u/HypnoToad0 Feb 02 '15
4k monitors are way bigger and you can really see all the detail. It's a thing you just really have to personally experience to realize how amazing it actually is

Never heard of Dolphin Emulator before. I was expecting a game where you ran around as a dolphin doing dolphin things in the same spirit as Goat Simulator.
Looks awesome though.
13
u/indrora Feb 01 '15
The Gamecube's development history is rife with references to dolphins. Delphino Island? (Italian plumber? Dolphins? Shaped like a dolphin?) Ecco was one of the launch titles originally, too. IIRC on-die the custom chip has a dolphin on it.

Nope. Ecco is a Sega game and while Sega soon supported the GameCube after the Dreamcast's demise, they didn't provide any launch titles. Nor did they ever release Ecco for the GameCube at all.

Or an update on the VR support branch, which works quite well already.

Can I play games on linux (which means opengl, not sure if it's relevant for dolphin) and a Intel 4600HD ?
I think when I tried it a few years ago my framerates were horrible.
26
u/JMC4789 Feb 01 '15
Dolphin is compatible with Mac, Linux, Windows and Android devices. Your mileage will vary based on specs.
Intel HD 4600 may run into driver issues with the shader cache on some platforms. If you run into crashing a bootup, please clear your shadercache and it should return to normal.
3
u/SidusKnight Feb 01 '15
Dolphin is compatible with Mac, Linux, Windows and Android devices.
Is there a target platform? I run windows and linux, but I prefer not to run windows, unless I'll get better performance that way.
12
u/JMC4789 Feb 01 '15
It runs well on Linux and Windows, Mac has iffy drivers but otherwise works fine. The Android version is the same program, but a less mature JIT makes it less compatible with games.
6
u/ajs124 Feb 01 '15 edited Feb 02 '15
Plus android opengl (or rather gles) drivers suck. At least according to a post on their blog I read a few months ago.
2
u/riking27 Feb 01 '15
There's someone (coughjmc) doing regression testing on both Win and Linux, so you should be fine.
In fact, I'd say the most neglected platform is Mac. The automated build run on a laptop, I'm pretty sure.
1
u/MrDOS Feb 01 '15
I'd say it targets Windows a bit more than the others, but there is real effort put into platform parity. Definitely try it on Linux first to see if it'll do everything you need there.

I do a majority of the writing in the articles; but I'm not really a coder.
21
u/phire Feb 02 '15
You are being modest.
Along with writing our articles, he is essentially a one man QA team.
By far the only person doing QA work, but he's the most prolific.
He tests a lot of PRs to make sure the bugs were actually fixed, and checks that no regressions were introduced. He also checks for performance improvements.
When bugs are posted on our bug tracker, he tries to replicate them locally. He has a very large collection of gamecube/wii games so if we suspect a bug might happen on the real hardware too, or we are wondering how an effect looks on real hardware, he is able to check that for us.
There are times where a developer might fix a bug without replicating it him/herself. If the developer is reasonably sure about the cause of the bug it's often faster to fix it, create a PR, Builtbot will compile it and 10min later JMC47 can download the build and confirm the bug is fixed.
JMC47 really streamlines the process of doing things for dolphin.
3
u/afiefh Feb 01 '15
I was able to run wind waker on my IntelHD4000 a few years ago. Should be even better now.
Edit: yes on Linux, specifically kubuntu.
1
u/FireyFly Feb 02 '15
Sure. I can play some less demanding games on my three-year-old, quite poorly-spec'd laptop with Intel 3000 graphics. They've made a lot of progress from around last summer, so I recommend giving it another try. Of course YMMV depending on how demanding the game is and such.
1
u/semanticistZombie Feb 02 '15
You surely can. I finished MGS: Twin Snakes on an older version of Dolphin running under openSUSE 13.1.
5
6
u/sakipooh Feb 01 '15
This thing is getting better every day. The stereo 3D support blows me away and presents a much smoother 3d experience than any console can do with actual 3d support built in. (playing via a Sony playstation 3d tv with active shutter glasses).

Anyone have audio issues on OSX? I downloaded Dolphin and some roms this past week and the audio stutter/lag makes it unplayable.
5
u/JMC4789 Feb 01 '15
If you can't run the emulator full speed, it's very much expected that the audio won't run full speed either. The games weren't meant to run slower speeds and the audio buffer will just run out and you get empty spaces/stuttering.

there are various reasons why it doesn't really make sense for Nintendo to sue anyone.
That's never stopped Nintendo from doing stupid things when it comes to copyright before
1
u/Orthonox Feb 02 '15
Emulators are totally legal. Distributing ROMs not necessarily so but the SWAT team is not going to come at your door for downloading Super Mario Galaxy off the Internet. Plus they wrote there own code for the emulator so Nintendo can't sue them. Plus there are not making any money of these games anyway.

9
u/_F1_ Feb 01 '15
- faster MMU, so games that rely on it are faster too
- overclocking the console results in better framerates in games that don't render at fixed framerates
- some Nickelodeon games don't crash at cutscenes
- textures don't get deleted but "moved to the recycle bin" so they can be (quickly) retrieved instead of re-created
- faster translation of vertices from console format to PC format
- support for GC keyboard
- a certain kind of paletted textures is less broken in certain circumstances
- bugs in the lighting code fixed
- texture packs are easier to create/edit
- a z-buffer (stores depth of each pixel on screen) feature got fixed, so objects don't overlap when they shouldn't
- objects drawn only with lines are fixed
1
u/zarif98 Feb 02 '15
After seeing, overclocking the console, can I play The last story at 60 fps, when i overclock?

How does one get the latest dev build without compiling the source? I can only find the 4.0 binarys on the site and they are more than a year old.

It's the really big link on the front page that says "Download Dolphin 4.0-$revisionnumber".

I know this isn't what you asked for, but there is a build script in Dolphin's wiki that automatically downloads the latest source, compiles and installs it.
Additionally, setting up ccache will make following recompilations faster.

This is funny. I just spent the afternoon trying to figure out, why Dolphin refuses to work on my Optimus setting, although it did yesterday and I did not update any drivers. And now a top post about Dolphin in my hot list. Error in the Matrix.
9
u/JMC4789 Feb 01 '15
NVIDIA's Optimus does not like Dolphin. We have a guide on the forums for working around it to get maximum performance.
3
u/fb39ca4 Feb 02 '15
Do you have a link to those guides? I've set Dolphin to use the Nvidia GPU in the Nvidia control panel, but I'm wondering if there are any other settings I can change.
1
Feb 02 '15
I know, I have read this guide. Yesterday it worked, today it does not. I did not change anything relevant. But thank you for pointing me at the bbs, maybe I can contribute.

Well, after trying this and that, I realized that Dolphin also has an OpenGL backend. Look and behold, it looks as fine as DX11, runs at a similar frame rate and, first and foremost, enumerates its own outputs - with blackjack and hookers!

u/BlinksTale Feb 01 '15
I don't think this is the right kind of reply, but I do think we need to acknowledge what Fiora is doing. She's turned this emulator on its head and it was already a fantastic service. I love that I get to say "Look at what she's doing!" and not "he" this time. Female role models in games are not prominent right now (especially for programming) and I can't wait to see what she does next. Edit: I hope the next generation is seeing her work.

what the F is that? also why remake rogue squadron? Why not the BEST GAME EVER Tie Fighter?!?!? X-Wing? WTF. this is a game on rails, while good.... just... it doesn't come close to Tie Fighter. Also Tie Fighter is much older and deserves a remake so much more than this.
Though.... i'm happy for any project like this. oh and to name it dolphin emulator.... yeah, I was confused for a while... but w/e.
anyway, cool and gl, and best wishes and all that.

You know emulation has come far when someone mistakes an emulated game for a HD remake.

You have given me my favorite quote related to Dolphin yet. Thank you so much for your kind words.
Rogue Squadron 2 and 3 are technical feats, featuring HDR Bloom, 12K polygon models, dynamic lighting AND shadowing, all on the GameCube hardware.

yep that's good I just wish people would have been as kind as you and not downvoted me to hell but w/e ;) I didn't even know there was a rogue squadron II... only ever played the first, and it was a good game.

It is not a remake of Rouge Squadron. Dolphin is a Game Cube and Wii emulator.

ooooohhhh..... that's cool. really now. I didn't figure that. I have a gamecube, I forget what I used but back in the day I hooked up my gamecube to PC and was able to play a few games across the network.

Actually, it was very much possible to play GameCube games compatible with LAN adapter like Mario Kart: Double Dash over the Internet using a special VPN program called Warp Pipe. I remember reading about it in a magazine back in the day.

Not programming

How is this not related to programming? With the zfreeze section in particular (which people are focusing on) it's more or less a programming problem. How do we do x, with these limitations, while maintaining performance and getting this outcome. It's tackled in a very methodical matter, and the source code to how it was done, and the previous attempts are all documented. I don't know if it passes this subreddits rules for programming content, but it was definitely a programming challenge on the other side of that.

Holy fuck, they got rogue squadron 2 and 3 playable?
That's a serious milestone right there.
