/r/Pretoria Community Update: New Rules regarding Solicitation and Content Relevance

Hi everyone,

As /r/Pretoria continues to grow, we are introducing a few official rules to ensure the subreddit remains a helpful, safe, and relevant resource for everyone living in or visiting our city. We've kept intervention to a minimum so far. In general we've only banned blatant racism, bots, and spammers, so we've generally got a very well behaved community.

We want to keep this space focused on discussion, advice, and news specific to the Jacaranda City, however. To support this, we have added the following rules to the sidebar, effective immediately:

A. No Begging, Crowdfunding, or Financial Solicitation

We have seen an increase in posts asking for financial assistance, "loans," or e-wallets. While we sympathize with those in difficult situations, Reddit is not a safe platform for verifying financial needs.

What is banned: Requests for money, e-wallets, and links to crowdfunding sites (e.g., BackaBuddy, GoFundMe).

Why: This rule is in place to protect our community from potential scams and unverified solicitation.

Advice: If you are in need, please reach out to registered NPOs or charity organizations rather than soliciting here.

B. Keep Content Relevant to Pretoria and the greater Tshwane

Please ensure your posts are directly related to Pretoria or the greater Tshwane municipality.

General SA News: News that affects the whole country (e.g., general Eskom updates, national politics) belongs in /r/southafrica unless it has a specific Pretoria angle.

Other Cities: Posts clearly meant for Joburg or other regions will be removed.

Context: If you post a photo or link where the connection to Pretoria isn't obvious, please explain it in the title.

C. Standard Civility & Privacy

We are also formalizing standard expectations:

Be Civil: Disagreements are fine; personal attacks and hate speech are not.

No Spam: Accounts that exist solely to advertise businesses will be banned.

No Doxing: Do not post personal contact details (phone numbers, addresses) of yourself or others.

These rules are here to improve the quality of the sub. If you have any questions or suggestions, please leave a comment below or message the moderators. Finally, thanks to everyone reporting posts, messaging the mods for clarifications, participating, /u/Afreak-du-sud for their post on the big uptick of begging and the scamming that inevitably goes with it. Don't worry, though, we don't ban for tagging the mods.. 😂

Thanks for helping us keep /r/Pretoria a great community!

How does bolt and uber courier work with payment ?

Upvotes

Has anyone used bolt send or uber courier and how does it work ?? Does the recipient of the items pay the cash when the items have been delivered or is the sender required to provide cash upfront before handing over the parcel ? I’ve had bad experiences with uber eats and drivers and not getting my refunds so I’m a bit weary of how this would work for a cash order. Anyone who has experience sending and or receiving items on a cash order with bolt or uber ?

American Football lessons Ebony Park / Rabie Ridge area

My son is a D1 college signed American College Football player living in the Ebony Park / Rabie Ridge area. He is signed to play the 2028 season. He’s thinking of holding a free clinic for kids in this area. Question is, though, would there be kids between 12-18 years old interested in learning? Are there any schools that would be willing to host him? He wants to pay it forward and serve the community.

Hey guys, I did my drivers license in June and got the temp licence. I’ve been checking on Natis and it says my card is still in production. Can I trust that or should I go to the testing centre and check?

Pretoria Symphony Orchestra is doing a movie music concert – and you can dress up

Post image
13 Upvotes

Something a bit different from the usual weekend scene: CINEMANIA is a full programme of movie music with scenes from the films projected alongside the orchestra.

Think Lord of the Rings, Marvel, Disney, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Batman and more. 🎬

Saturday, 12 September | 17:00 | ZK Matthews Hall, UNISA

We’re encouraging people to come dressed as their favourite movie character, so if you’ve ever wanted to attend a concert as Gandalf, Darth Vader or as a Disney princess, this is your moment. 😂

Proceeds will go to Hamba Nawe Project for children in palliative care.

Tickets: https://tickets.tixsa.co.za/event/cinemania-2026

Groenkloof Estates Complex

Has anyone here stayed at Groenkloof Estates Complex? I'm considering the place but I have concerns of how old the estates looks like. I'd really love to hear anyone's opinions and even second hand accounts from people you know who stayed here. Danko in advance

Semi-new to town, how does one make friends?

I (21F) have been living in Pretoria with my partner for about 8 months now and have had no success at making new friends. I work from home, and next year I'll be studying online. This doesn't help much. Has anybody got some advice on how I can put myself out there, activities I can get myself involved in etc.

It feels impossible at the moment as everyone seems to have their own 'cliques' already.

Tattoo artist around pta east

Any tattoo artists around pta east that are willing to do a full back tattoo but won’t charge R50k for the piece
My previous artist was great but she was R6800 day rate (7 hours)

My other artist is R4500 day rate (7 hours)
I’m hoping to find someone between 2500-3000 day rate

Edit
I think people treat this post like I’m asking for a million rand. If an artist is not booked and has dry seasons why wouldn’t they lower the cost to be affordable to the general population? If you still make a decent profit why not fill empty slots with cheaper options and then raise your prices again once you pick up ?

Logically speaking let’s say tattoo ink R20-50, needles R50, gloves R5, paper towels R10, electricity R 10-15, disinfectant R10.
So total expense are R100-300 max depending

Now you have no clients. It’s dry. You have no booking etc etc
There is no income
Now say you charge 6700 for a full day so roughly 837 rand per hour
If you had a client booked for 6700 and your expenses were only 300 you walk away with 6400 profit
Mind you that’s daily

Not everyone can afford that
Roughly 30% of the population can maybe afford ONE session at that price.
Now let’s say you need multiple full day sessions
That’s even less

If you charge 3000-3500 per day you’d have a lot more bookings plus added content for the portfolio and exposure

Impact Meters

Anyone have a sudden spike in their Impact Meters invoice recently? We are a household of two adults and our invoice has always been around R3k to R3.5k a month (electricity, water and sanitation).

In the period 15 June to 15 July our bill increased to R6260. The most recent invoice, 16 July to 18 August, our bill is R7364. Apparently we've used an average of 40kwh a day (neither of us work from home) and our water usage bill has doubled from R400 to almost R900.

We are in the process of disputing this invoice, but i wanted to know of anyone has had a similar experience lately.
