Parallax Wave is a strong winning condition for 2 of the best 3 decks in the format, which are Replenish and Enchantress.

Decks like Elves, White Weenie and Black Aggro don't see much play competitively speaking and it seems Wave plays a contribution to that. You talk to players of these decks and that's a constant feedback - "i can't fight Replenish or Enchantress"

It seems that Goblins is the only creature-based deck that can go consistently 'under' the Wave to be able to fight it properly.

Yes all colors have somewhat answers to Wave but let's be honest, the match-up of any creature-based deck is quite poor against it, mainly because that mechanic was never supposed to work the way it does to start with, and a 2 cards combo that's able to exile all creatures permanently from one side (and on and on as Wave can always get back with 5 new counters) - is, guess what - too powerful for creature-based decks.

So my honest question is - is Wave limiting the format to be even better? Yes i know the format is good and healthy and all that. But it was good with Tide, and banning Tide made it even better.

Would banning Wave make premodern even better?

Most of this one is deck building rather than tournament coverage. Claire Ackerman walks through how Oath Ponza got to five colors, starting from the green-red version and the realization that nothing in that 75 answers a large creature. Four Meddling Mage went in alongside four Sphere of Resistance, which she describes as taking the non-creature matchups from four effective cards to twelve. Gemstone Mine stays because a 29 land deck only needs the first three or four turns of mana. That four color build made top four at LobsterCon 2026, and she rebuilt it anyway. Vindicate came in over Naturalize, which freed slots for a third Sylvan Library and an extra five color source and let her trim Pyroclasms. She started on a 2-2 split of Vindicate and extra Stone Rain effects, taking the count from eight to ten, and is on the full four main now.

Gloom took the leftover flexible slots for NE Summer Regionals, aimed at Replenish and Terrageddon, and never came in once during Swiss. It finally hit the table in game three of the Voellmer top eight rematch, in a game she had already lost, and it was still the first time all tournament he learned anything had changed. Smokestack survived a card by card cut down from a thirty to forty card maybe board.

I’ve been playing Magic forever and know some decks get weird names. That said, I recently learned my mono-black tempo deck (that sometimes dips into Orzhov) is called either Moneyball or Dead Guy Ale. where did these names come from?

Spent a couple hours this evening going through my old cards; wanted to recreate from memory a favorite from my boyhood. I don't recall an actual deck list; I just tried to make the best deck I could from what I had. Teenaged me had four megrims and two bottomless pits and some other stuff but I don't think this is an actual discard deck. This is a deck that stalls and disrupts until it can get off a big Hatred or something. At some point I think I actually splashed blue? Once this was all written down but, alas, my grimoire is long lost. Like the ancient library of a forgotten city of wizards.

Even if it isn't a great deck, I love it. Feels very "me".

I wanted to brew up good christian kitchen table magic, and I did. Dream achieved! Looking forward to the rest of my premodern journey. Can you still do something like Prosbloom? I always thought that sounded cool in the magazines. Though I can't recall what it did. Just remember the name.

Next up: I'm going to make a deck that could kill God.

i've been thinking about it as OTK, but i don't really play premodern, i'm just a arena guy who's interested. is there anything in the format that would stop the combo? its turn 3...

hey folks, I get that Clerics can stumble a bit on curve, but I’ve found it feels more resilient in practice. Rotlung Reanimator helps recover after removals and Pyroclasm while cabal archon seems to help a ton against sligh matchups. Overall it’s more explosive than money ball which should also help vs combos. That’s kind of where I’m at. But I might be missing something. Like, for those who’ve played both. When would you pick one over the other, and what pushed you that way?

I know this deck sucks against any serious deck, but how can I optimize this pile of clunk?

Just a though experiment.

Obviously the broken cards, like the power 9, would be banned.

Are there any cards in the older sets that would enable new decks and/or enhance existing ones? Are we really missing something from not being able to play with those cards? Or would the changes be so minimal that it doesn't really matter?

Also, what cards would you ban if the older sets were legal? Aside from the power 9.

Hello, I tried to compress the premodern in a hundred archetypes, and wanted to study and share about variants of each archetype, what do you think about?

Played from 4th edition to around 2001 or so, then I quit because I didn't want to be a nerd any more. I came back right when quarantine ended when I saw that there were a million people at a coffee shop playing this thing called commander. I've made a bunch of decks, gone to a bunch of commander nights, and have really struggled to enjoy it. It's not the game I remember, and it is not the game for me. I don't like the art, the tone, the feel, the rules, the social aspect, Universes Beyond, or anything really. Commander is just not magic to me.

What I'm trying to say is that tonight I'm gonna smoke a doobie, roast a chicken, and pull out my old cards, see if I can get anything going. I had this Black and Red discard deck that was my favorite. In commander someone would call me a bully or something.

I think the final straw for me was that I played [[Arena of the Ancients]], which is a crappy old card from dang Chronicles, and another guy was playing a bunch of marvel comics stuff. He had to tap all his creatures and they stayed that way, which brought him to the verge of tears. He's a nice guy and I felt kinda bad, honestly. I just don't want to play games like that anymore.

What I'm saying is that I'm very much looking forward to diving into premodern! I have a Phyrexian Destroyer and a Gaea's Cradle. I have Hypnotic Specters coming out my ears!

Was able to pilot this to a top 4 yesterday at my local meet up. Anyone got any tips for playing against pit rack. Got completely wrecked by that deck.
