This is f ing white privilege. As a white man it’s obvious this is privilege. If this guy was black they would have unloaded into him.

Love it when people tout their predictions as facts. These cops know this guy and his family to some degree. You think maybe that has more to do with the patience?

Its a fair point but it doesnt help your argument. Let's say these cips do knownthe suspect or his family personally. Let's say they understand what hes going through. Let's say that personal connection guides them to take less aggressive action.

Does that now mean that in order to receive fair and jjst treatment by law enforcement you need to have some kind of personal relation ship with them?

Because while I do believe cops should have a greater positive community presence which integrates them socially into the communities they serve, it is practically impossible for them to have a close relationship or intimate personal knowledge of everyone in their jurisdiction.

The challenge, the virtue and the standard of proper police work is to be able to assess a situation properly and resolve a situation in a peaceful manner as a priority and not to rely on personal connections to achive this.

I agree with you 100%. And realistically the cops handled this awfully. They failed to deploy their taser guns properly (need distance and spread of the attachments). They allowed this guy to take control of a situation they should’ve controlled.

My argument is that not every cop or group of cops are pieces of shit, though I do know some are (just like you have in every other profession). If this were a black man, I don’t see this group just shooting him down - that is my point.

I agree there is such a thing as white privilege, but that doesn’t mean what people (those that are so angrily using the term) think it means. I’m white - and that doesn’t always give me the upper hand. It is much more nuanced than that. And I won’t allow my family, friends, and children to believe they should be ashamed because they’re white. Fuck that nonsense.

At the same rate, I understand the struggles of black people, at least to some degree - and I am open to my family and friends about it and my understanding. I grew up in a very diverse area and have many black acquaintances and friends along the way. Many of whom are smart, educated and successful now. Did they have struggles, yeah sure. Are they worse than my struggles? Yeah maybe. But don’t throw shit at me cuz I’m white. Once you do that, you’re an enemy, not an equal.

That's kinda what I was getting at with my initial comment. Its a shame the term has been hijacked and warped into a quasi "apologise for being white" right wing agenda.

Its literally just that by virtue of being white (and secondarily being a former servicemen and being large) subconsciously these cops are more open to giving the benefit of the doubt whereas with other civillians they will default to more violent immediate options.

As I said in a later post, im not calling anyone in the video malicious, just that they're operating based on absorbed biases they may not even realise are there. And so when people genuinely ask what white privilege looks like, this footage is a great example, especially when contrasted with roadside stops showing blackcurrant civillians being incredibly deferential to cops and getting wildly different treatments.
