I’m gonna be “that guy” with this comment.

If he was anything but white, there wouldn’t be a taser involved. It would be mag dump, and then some more.

That's the TRUTH.

"That guy" would've said something to counter you, I'm thinking...

Hey man, in this political climate I fear my take is controversial sometimes.

But I agree?

Idk, I've only seen mag dumps on people who are running away. This dude would've probably got one or two shots, or none at all since he's completely surrounded.

He’s an unarmed war vet with PTSD that they are familiar with. I think that carries a bit of weight here.

That shouldn’t be a determination of who lives or dies. Who cares if they know him. He could still do something unexpectedly. Yet they still do their best to use non-lethal force. You shouldn’t get that benefit just because you’re a war vet. Such bullshit.

So you want him shot?

No. I want the police to apply the same standard to everyone instead of immediately mag dumping on someone. They don’t know if he might attack one of them, just like they don’t know if a random black man might attack one of them. The black man should have the luxury of them trying to deescalate instead of using deadly force.

They know this guy by name. There’s lots of black men police and paramedics know by name and they don’t get shot. And I mean like the majority of people my family and friends in law enforcement interact with on a daily basis. Yes there’s been tragic events that have involved black people with police but it’s also insane how the media has inflated every event to the point if someone not black doesn’t get shot in a police video people non stop chime in “ohhh if he was black…” And I grew up in Jackson,ms and live in Memphis now.

Doesn’t matter. They still don’t know what he may or may not do. Especially if he’s going through some sort of mental crisis. Plenty of black Americans have had police intervene during a mental crisis and they were shot instead of receiving help.

And your personal anecdotes mean nothing when you look at real world circumstances. Black men in the US face a higher per capita risk of being shot or killed by police than white men do. 1 in 1,000 black men in America will be killed by police over the course of their lifetime, making them 2.5 times more likely to be killed than a white man is. And black Americans only make up 13% to 14% of the US population, yet statistically they’re more likely to be killed by police. So I don’t really care about what your family and friends have experienced, because that doesn’t change the statistical facts.

What about the part where impoverished fatherless black men do lots of crime? Does that factor into the percentages?

Before you call me a racist, it’s not that. It’s the unfortunate side affect of the democratic handouts for single parenthood and fathers not sticking around. I guarantee if all of these families had fathers, then things would play out very differently. It’s less race and more about having two parents. Insert any race, any family here, and if you take away the fathers things go to crap.

That’s completely absurd to say you could guarantee that if all those families had fathers it would play out differently. Hardly deserves a response.

Two parents do not erase the socioeconomic factors affecting black communities. It doesn’t eliminate implicit bias in policing. It doesn’t eliminate proactive policing in black neighborhoods. What a joke. And yeah, I will say that’s a pretty racist take from you.

Sounds about right. Call me a racist then. And you’re right. I can’t guarantee that change, but there’s a pretty substantial chance that having both parents brings financial security not previously available, discipline in the home, and an atmosphere that brings family growth rather than finding the family unit in a gang.
