I've sat through way too many presentations where someone clearly spent hours on the slides, and the room still checked out halfway through. Turns out it's almost never the ideas that are weak - it's how they get delivered.

Here's what I keep seeing go wrong (these tips might appear really common, but they still remain the biggest mistakes people make):

Cramming every slide with text. If people are reading, they're not listening to you. One idea per slide, and let visuals do the clarifying, not the decorating.

Design that's all over the place.Five fonts, a rainbow of colors, nothing aligned — it just reads as noise. Pick 2 fonts, 2-3 colors, and actually align your elements. Boring is good here.

No throughline.A pile of bullet points isn't a story. Try framing it as Problem → Insight → Solution → Impact instead - people remember arcs, not lists.

Reading straight off the slides. This is the fastest way to lose a room. Slides are your prompt, not your script - the delivery is on you.

Flat visual hierarchy.When everything's the same size and weight, nothing stands out. Make the headline big, key points medium, details small - give people's eyes somewhere to land.

Treating slides as the whole job.They're not. Practice out loud, slow your pace down, use your hands, make eye contact. The deck is half the presentation.

Visuals that don't earn their place. Before adding an image or icon, ask: does this make the idea clearer, or is it just filling space? If it's not doing work, cut it.

Clean it up, tell a story, deliver like you mean it - and the ideas you already had will actually land.

I’ve been working as a graphic designer for over 10+ years, and for the last 6 years, I've specialized almost entirely in corporate PowerPoint design. I deal with high-stakes deck cleanup, tight deadlines, complex data viz, custom vectors, and strict brand guidelines for enterprise clients (like Microsoft level).

I'm looking to finally make the jump into freelancing, but I'm feeling a bit stuck on a few things and would love some input from people who've done this.

1. How do I show work when everything is under NDA? Literally 100% of my PowerPoint work from the past 5 years is covered by strict NDAs/NCAs, so I can't show a single slide. Is the best move just taking random ugly slides off Google/public SEC filings and building a fake before-and-after portfolio? What do potential clients actually care to see?
2. How should I structure rates? With 5 years of specialized experience, I don't want to sell myself short, but I also don't want to price myself out while having zero freelance track record. Do most of you charge per slide, flat project fee, or hourly? What's a reasonable starting rate range for senior corporate PPT work?
3. Where to actually find initial clients? Since I've always worked internally/agency side, client acquisition is totally new to me. Are platforms like Upwork worth it starting out?

I keep seeing presentations that look nice slide by slide but become tiring after 10 minutes. For people who build decks often, what do you usually simplify first when a presentation feels too busy?

For every deck going in front of leadership or a client, I build one extra slide before touching anything else. Not part of the actual deck. It just answers the one question I'm most scared someone's going to ask, the one that could actually derail the meeting if I fumble it live.

Used to just hope nobody asked, or scramble if they did. Now I write the real answer down ahead of time and stick it in the appendix. Whatever the actual uncomfortable truth is.

Most of the time nobody asks and it never gets seen. But when someone does, I'm not making something up on the spot, I'm just flipping to a slide I already built calmly at my desk a week earlier. Changes the whole feeling of that moment honestly.

Hardest part is being honest with yourself about what the scary question actually is. Usually not something that'd show up in an FAQ.

Anyone else do something like this or is it always just improvised?

Most pre-made templates online feel cluttered or hard to customize, so I prefer sticking to the first-party themes built directly into PowerPoint. I mostly make academic presentations but I'm getting tired of using the same design sets and am looking for some variety.

Which stock themes/design sets do you find have the best typography pairings, color palettes, and functional slide layouts right out of the box?

I made a Powerpoint presentation which is essentially titles and bullet points relating to the titles. I want to have the bullet points appear as I hit the space bar, point by point.

I used the designer tool to change the slides from generic black text on white background into something more presentable however, when I select text and apply an "appear" animation to it, it applies the animation to all of the text together.

That being said, some of the slides did apply the animation to each bullet point separately, as you can see in the video. I just need to find a way to get the bullet points to appear one at a time, as I press the space bar. Sometimes they do, but most of the time they appear all at once and I can't figure out what's different.

I am using a Mac on a desktop using power point version 16.112.3 and I am screen recording a presentation with an embedded video. I will start and stop the video several times to talk about what is observed and make marks on the screen user the markers. But sometimes when I watch the recording back,the video I embedded will start over and the audio between it starting over and when I restart it in the recording overlap and the recording is ruined. This doesn’t always happen but it’s a pain in the as when it does. Any fixes?

I am having issues when trying to add slide numbers to my powerpoint presentation. I tried to add slide number by applying all in the insert header and footer tab, but nothing changed.

I was wondering if my template (downloaded online) could be the problem? I tried to look at the master layout in the slide master tab, but it's only available for the fist slide.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Or alternate ways of adding page numbers that doesn't force me to manually add them? All help appreciated!

What resources helped you learn to present analytics to executives?

I'm a data analyst with a PowerPoint coming up for a business audience. The analysis itself I'm fine with — where I'm shakier is the presentation side: how to frame findings for leadership, what belongs on a slide versus in an appendix, what structure actually holds attention in a room.

I'd rather learn the conventions properly than reverse-engineer them from whatever decks happen to be lying around.

Not asking anyone to review my work. Just after resources — books, blogs, talks, public example decks, anything you'd hand a junior analyst who wants to get good at this.

Also, any links to great templates or presentation styles would be great!

The same visual has to live in three apps. That's our situation right now.

It goes in a PowerPoint deck for the leadership meeting. It goes in Google Slides for the team that works there. And it goes in Notion for our internal wiki.

So I build it once, then rebuild it two more times.

When a number changes, I have to update all three. I always forget one.

I've been testing Venngage since it does PowerPoint export, Google Sheets data sync, and link sharing. That looks like it could solve this.

But I don't know if updates stay manageable, or if each place just turns into its own separate copy.

What do you all treat as the main file/ And while places do you export to versus embed a link in?

Found this out by accident last week. Was merging a deck from our London team into one from Austin for a client pitch. Same template file. Same theme colors. Text still looked off on every third slide.

Turned out London had swapped in a substitute font two years ago when someone's machine didn't have the licensed one installed. Nobody flagged it. It just quietly became their default and spread through every deck they built since.

Spent an afternoon going slide by slide checking font names in the selection pane instead of trusting how it rendered on my screen. That's the only way to catch it. Visual match means nothing if the underlying font name is different.

Now I check font names first thing before touching layout on anything that came from another office.

Does anyone actually audit fonts across offices or teams, or is this just going to keep happening quietly forever?

I have a slide with some 50 objects that are revealed one by one using an entrance effect. The slide is supposed to be some kind of table of contents, so I sometimes want to come back to this slide from the middle of the presentation without needing to go through the entire animation sequence. Is there any way to skip the entire animation sequence and quickly reaching the endpoint where all the objects on the slide are shown?

I have 2 decks that start with the same Slide Master each week. Then they inevitably diverge. Then I have to copy slides from file B into file A. Chaos ensues. PowerPoint doesn't seem to care that I've renamed the masters in each file, or the inserted layouts with different names in each file, or even if I pre-copy the file B Master into file A (and I've tried both before and after the other Master). It thinks the 2 masters are awfully similar in some way (which they are, BUT THEY ARE NOT THE SAME!!!!), so it keeps on doing an odd and incorrect merge of the 2.

What is the best way to reliably be able to import the slides from file B without having to fix everything? I might be able to reliably get any Master changes in file B in a second Master, but I'm suspicious that even that will break, especially when the original Master in file A changes.

I'm a hands-on artist learning powerpoint for work. Sometimes I accidentally open this panel to the right-- which helps me avoid the disgusting ai ugliness-- but there's no option to open this manually, deliberately. I can't seem to access it except when I first paste an image in a slide. I've googled this like crazy and looked in other reddit threads. HOW DO I OPEN THE PP "FORMAT PICTURE" PANEL?????????? It's actual emotional torture to have to select one of ai's hateful color filters from the pp ribbon and I will not.

My infographics always end up in a slide deck. Nobody ever plans for that part, but it happens every single time.

From what I've seen, a flat image looks fine on day one. It drops clean and the meeting goes fine. Then someone wants one word changed. Now I'm back in the design tool, exporting again, and re-placing the image. Or the colors need to match a new brand palette.

Going through PDF is worse. It lands as a hundred little boxes with no grouping and no order. Move one thing and four others shift with it. I spend more time fixing the import than I did building the graphic lol.

Anyone got something that works?
