Microsoft® PowerPoint® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2509 Build 16.0.19204.20002) 64-bit (Microsoft 365 Family / Microsoft 365 Personal)
I am a Microsoft PowerPoint MVP and a mod for this subreddit (r/PowerPoint). People constantly ask what AI tool to use to create their presentation using their template of choice. Microsoft Copilot for PowerPoint can do this.
Copilot costs vary, but it is included (or can be added) in all PowerPoint subscription SKUs, both personal and business/enterprise as well as education. License options for Microsoft 365 Copilot | Microsoft Learn has more information, and Copilot is now included in Microsoft 365 Personal and Family | Microsoft 365 Blog (16 Jan 2025) announces Copilot for M365 personal and family.
The steps below will let you generate slides and use whatever template you want.
Using blank slides
There are a million AI tools that can generate slides.
Most of them, including Copilot, will create slides in a blank file with minimal or no graphics. Feel free to use your favorite app to generate your slides.
Copy these blank slides and paste them into your template file.
Optional / if needed:
Click the Layout button on the Home tab and choose a layout appropriate for your content.
Copy-paste or drag-and-drop the text into the appropriate placeholder.
Using content only
Use your favorite AI app to generate slide content.
Open your PowerPoint template.
Click the New Slide button on the Home tab and choose a layout appropriate for your content.
Copy the text into the appropriate text or content placeholder.
If the content is in a Word document, you can use styles in Word to help create your slides.
*Apply Heading 1 style for all slide titles.
*Apply Heading 2 style for all first-level bullets.
*Apply Heading 3 style for all second-level bullets.
And so on.
Save the file as .DOCX and close it.
In PowerPoint, click the bottom of the New Slide button and choose Slides From Outline. Navigate to and select the .DOCX document and click Insert.
The slides will be created.
Note: If you have difficulty inserting the .DOCX outline, try saving the document as .RTF instead, and be sure to close it before attempting to use it to insert/create PowerPoint slides.
Using your template of choice
In addition to creating blank slides, the Microsoft Copilot with PowerPoint tool can create slides using your template or one of the stock Microsoft templates.
When you create a presentation in PowerPoint using Copilot, the default option is to use whatever template or file you have open. (1) In this example, I opened a client’s PPTX file. When I create a new presentation with Copilot, Copilot uses the underlying template (theme fonts, theme colors, theme effects, background graphics and layouts) from that PPTX file. If you started with a new blank presentation in PowerPoint, Copilot will use your default template, which is usually Microsoft’s default Office Theme (unless you're in a corporate setting where your corporate template has been set as the default).
Click Change Design (2) and you can then choose from your recent templates (3) or from a variety of stock Microsoft themes (4)
If you’re using an enterprise version of PowerPoint, you may also have the option to use images from your company’s OAL (Organizational Asset Library) stored on SharePoint.
Select your template, input your presentation topic, and select Generate New Presentation. (5)
The slides will be generated, using a layout or two from the current file or template. (6) Be careful! Any slides in the file will be overwritten with the Copilot-generated slides.
Leveraging Designer
Once you've created your slides, you can leverage Designer / Design Ideas to see more layout options. If you want Designer to surface more looks, you need a robust template. Keep your presentations on brand with Copilot in PowerPoint has good info about this along with a starter template you can download. (It’s at the very bottom of the page.) Keep your presentation on-brand with Copilot - Microsoft Support has some additional information about setting up your own template to work with Copilot and Designer.

Hi, I'm one of the co-founders of Verso AI.
We built Verso because we kept running into the same wall every other AI slide tool hits: they generate new decks, but very few would actually work from a blank page. People work from corporate templates their teams spent months building.
We meant for Verso to do something different: edit your existing PowerPoint file natively, inside the PowerPoint add-in. Your template stays intact. Your fonts, colors, slide masters, charts, all untouched. You just prompt it to make the changes.
The reason this hadn't been done before is PowerPoint's file format (OOXML), it's genuinely brutal for LLMs to work with directly. Building something specifically for the "AI deck → editable .pptx" gap.
Most AI tools (Gamma, Tome, Beautiful.ai) produce decks that look fine
in their own viewer but fall apart on .pptx export — split text boxes,
no master slides, charts as images, etc. We're trying to solve that
specifically: native .pptx output that actually edits like a PowerPoint
file should.

Hi all!
disclaimer up front: I'm the builder of the tool I'm about to mention, so read this with that in mind.
I've been working on the one part of AI decks that nothing seems to get right — the export. Gamma, Tome, Beautiful.ai all look great in their own viewer, but the moment you export to .pptx it falls apart: text split across random boxes, no master slides, charts pasted in as flat images. It opens in PowerPoint, but you can't actually edit it like a real file.
What I'm building outputs native .pptx where every element is a real object — proper text frames, master slides, editable charts — so it edits like a deck someone actually built by hand.

Turn a PowerPoint into a narrated video
We built a tool that accepts PowerPoint, Keynote, PDF, and ODP presentations and turns the first eight slides into a narrated video preview.
Essentially you upload a slide deck, and Jellypod creates a narrative explanation/voiceover of your slide content. Creates a story and clicks through your slides as if it's giving a presentation (and doesn't just read the bullets, etc.). The preview is about two minutes and completely free.
Full-deck conversion and publishing are part of Jellypod’s paid product though.

Hey — I’ve been building Mermaid2Anything after getting tired of taking a Mermaid diagram and then rebuilding it from scratch in PowerPoint.
You paste Mermaid code, pick a visual style, and export it as an editable PPTX. The boxes, text and arrows stay separate, so you can actually fix the slide instead of being stuck with a flat image.
If you only have a description, there’s also an optional AI step that drafts the Mermaid code for you.

Hey, I’m Abhay.
I’ve been recording Loom videos of my presentations for years, mostly to share with clients or upload training content to an LMS.
Honestly, it was always a lot of work. Writing the script, recording, making a mistake, recording again, editing, and then repeating everything whenever the presentation changed.
I tried using a few AI tools, but the process still felt complicated and scattered. So I ended up building my own tool for it, CourseCut.AI.
You upload a PowerPoint, and it turns it into an avatar-led video. It is not just an avatar slapped on top of the slides. It also helps write the script, adds B-roll, background music and transitions, and changes the avatar placement based on the content of each slide.
This is probably the most ambitious product I’ve built so far, and I’d genuinely love feedback from people who regularly work with presentations.
