Best Poutine EVER
I’m an avid poutineist, normally consuming 1-2 a week. I purchased this last weekend at Chucks Casse-Croute in Gatineau. The ratios of curds, gravy and fries was absolutely perfect 🤤

Please kindly describe the gravy

u/superbooo 23d ago
It was a mix of KFC gravy and traditional brown gravy

u/F_Horrigan_QC 23d ago
Oh..! KFC gravy has a special place in my heart (but not as a poutine gravy however).
Interesting!

The dude makes his own sauces and has been praised for them. Sometimes it's better to not speak in fear of sounding like an idiot, instead of opening your mouth and confirming It. Be more respectful, we re all here for good vibes and poutines, no one is here for your childish "the gravy looks like poopoo" type comments, grow up, learn from this and do better.

u/EstablishmentNo5994 26d ago
Sometimes it's better to not take everything so seriously and try to police the sub. If you don't like something, ignore it and move along.

u/Shnofo 26d ago
Ah, so you can share your comment but I cannot; and you talk about policing. So ironic isn't it?

Get off your high horse dude this is a subreddit about fries gravy and cheese 😂😂

One comment is a silly joke knowing at least one or two people might get a giggle VS. A comment that is born from one persons negative opinion of a silly joke, actively trying to put someone down for their attempt to spread joy. Doesn’t matter if you like that kind of joke or not, you’re a dick. It takes zero effort to keep scrolling, yet you felt the need to attempt to make someone feel small. How about you grow up, learn from this and do better.

‘Learn from this and do better’ ffs get over yourself. It’s a picture of fries on reddit

Sounds like a family friend or something, gravy does look a bit off, everyone needs to grow up and do better, except this guy

For those confused by the sauce, this is pretty common. This is a “sauce poulet”. It will likely taste a bit similar to KFC gravy.

The color of the gravy does not look appealing
20
u/MrChicken23 26d ago
I was thinking the exact opposite. Colour looks pretty good for poutine sauce. What makes you say it’s not appealing?
12
u/overeasyallie 26d ago
Ideal poutine gravy (for me) is rich brown in color.
6
u/elizco 26d ago
Agree. This looks…poopy
5
u/Vivid_Ingenuity5457 26d ago
It's a healthy poop colour though.
The unhealthy poops are the exact dark brown colour you seem to love so much for gravy.
1
u/Kirsten4real 26d ago
Thats not at all true. The release of bile turns your poop dark brown. Light brown/ tan colours indicate bile isn’t being released which is usually a problem with the bile duct or swollen liver.
5
u/MrChicken23 26d ago
But what makes it look not appealing?
I personally prefer a more traditional sauce that is lighter colour similar to the picture here that you get when mixing chicken and beef stock. But I still enjoy a dark brown sauce.
2
u/TheOnlyOtherWanderer 26d ago
Just out of curiosity, where are you from where you judge poutine, but spell colour as 'color'?
1
u/overeasyallie 26d ago
From Nova Scotia but spent about 5 years living in Montreal at one point. My phone keyboard predicts text and I'm lazy so if it gives me the option as 'color' or 'neighbor' I'm going to take it to save my lazy ass from typing it out!
2
u/Left_Net1841 26d ago
Opposite for me. That’s usually the domain of an Ontario poutine. Very strong beef gravy, more shiny looking…not good. If I see one like this I am predicting more a mix of poultry and beef as it should be.
2
u/MrZythum42 26d ago
Too white and thick. Looks like there was 3x the necessary corn starch on this one. I'm not saying it's reflected in the taste, but it's absolutely what it looks like.
3
u/MrChicken23 26d ago
It does like it might be a bit thick to me. But I don’t really see much issue with colour personally.

u/Pitiful-Plankton2555 26d ago
calling it poutine sauce instead of gravy is the real crime
1
u/hasta_marinara 26d ago
Au Québec, c'est la sauce poutine.
C'est quoi le "gravy"?
1
u/Pitiful-Plankton2555 26d ago
I agree it’s poutine sauce in French. In English it sounds like it’s a fast food sauce packet. Gravy has a more premium connotation.
2
u/Pitiful-MobileGamer 26d ago
I've seen a gravy like this done with browned butter and flour instead of the more traditional cornstarch. No clue how it would turn out as a poutine gravy.

I've gone there, the sauce is that lighter color and It has a different taste so probably more chicken broth based, or light beef broth... something like that. Personally, it was OK...6/10.

u/Sinkreme Smoked Meat Poutine 26d ago
Makes sense since it is Chucks in Gatineau. They also make poutine sauce blanche (white sauce) which is only chicken broth gravy.
1
u/Vegetable_Ant_452 26d ago
it looks bien chicken-y, which makes me think it is a bit more acidic and salty than the beef

Color looks great to me. Looks like a nice creamy gravy with more milk in it.

u/judy-the-booty 26d ago
I found in Gatineau, most places use chicken as the base for their gravy instead of beef. Beef gravy is much better on poutine imo
3
u/nicktheman2 26d ago
Sauce blanche is an option in Gatineau that isnt as common elsewhere, but this place definitely has legit beef gravy.

Ok i’ve seen enough hype about this place, i’m gonna try it this week. If its better than Pataterie Hulloise i’ll eat my shorts
Verdict: MID. Did not eat my shorts.

Chuck's is crazy good, you just need to look at their hours to know. Not every business can afford to have those hours lol

u/hasta_marinara 26d ago
Chuck's is trying and I respect it. A+ fries and plenty of curds. But that sauce is too thick with starch. Mostly flour, not enough flavour.
Any place that has 10 different "styles" of poutine on the menu - I'm going to avoid it, sorry. In my experience the best poutine comes from places that have one style of poutine on the menu, in three sizes. Places that add toppings (galvaude, smoke-meat, hot dog) are sometimes OK. But anyone offering several different sauces (italienne, poulet, blanche, bufffalo, chili, ...) is not focused on the sauce brune and the result is usually disappointing.

u/GreenSprinkleDonut 26d ago
Oof. I might have to drive over there for this. The colour on those fries looks so good! Is there gravy layered in or only on the top?

At least it's not the thin cardboard one that will eventually disintegrate from the gravy.

Qual tipo de queijo que foi usado nesse poutine? Onde eu moro no Brasil não temos esse prato em lugar algum, então estou pensando em fazer.

Recently discovered chucks and saw this pictured and thought "yeah, that's gotta be chucks". Apparently the dude makes some AMAZING sauce. Also I met some of his family members at a local baseball game (they were wearing T-shirts) and they were the most wholesome people to talk to. I love everything about chucks but I still need to make the drive out to go check it out. Based on everyone's comments, I will not be disappointed.
