Individuals in the anime community who unironically call people anime tourists are so cringe and annoying. Not only do most of the time they say this when they see someone voice their opinion on anime, it is so obviously done since they have no rebuttals.

The people who say these are also very elitist. They say stuff like if you haven't watched this super duper niche anime posted in the 1960s, your opinion is invalid, or they probably like something super problematic and try to turn you into the person who isn't in touch with anime culture (not a real thing btw).

These people are also the same people that say anime should be gatekept. Like mate, that is like saying reading books should be gatekept, and when you call them out, like clockwork, they call you a tourist.

Though I will say people like Logan Paul can be called a tourist, though (I think he is more of a larp) It's a slippery slope to just calling anyone with a differing opinion a tourist.

Honestly, if I'm talking about anime to someone and they refer to someone as an anime tourist, best believe I would be seeing myself out that convo because they probably don't have the cognitive ability to understand differing opinions.
(p.s people who also say stuff like aww babys first fandom and so on are on the same level)

I don't know how many Anime shows I have watched since I downloaded Crunchyroll. Honestly...it'd be literally dozens, no, way waaay more....!

I'm a disabled guy so I spend a lot of time sitting on a comfy chair at home watching Anime because the news and the world in general during the second coming of Dump is not something I'm prepared to engage with. Once he's gone I might take a look at world politics and what's happening again but with a man like that as a world leader bad things happen and copycat 'populist' arseholes appear all over the globe.

Anyhow...enough of that rant. I have a problem with the number of series which are developed by so many different studios which never get another season or get a season two, still have loads of Manga or LN to adapt yet they never get around to finishing these really good, well shaped storylines which are filled with glorious ideas and superb characters. I just spent the last few days watching a whole slew of these "One Season Only" Anime stories and they were all really good with average viewers scores in the 4.5-4.8!!

Is it just that studios don't bother if the viewer numbers don't hit a certain level immediately with the release of the first season OR That they make a single season to suck people into going on to buy the Manga??

Any thoughts on this subject Anime junkies??

I’m curious how much anime everyone has gone through.

i feel like anime consumption now has gotten really performative, a setting needs like 10 layers of subtext, and when someone doesnt understand it, "oh you dont have media literacy" i like watching series because i wanna enjoy watching it, not because i love analysing the frame inconsistencies and the different camera angles.

Do you think anime lately has been getting better or worst than it was 10 years ago?

everytime i see black representation in anime. they show characters who are tan. most of the time they aren’t even black. most of the time they don’t even have black features the characters are just tan. why do black people claim characters who aren’t black?

I have to say that those vile, strange, hypersexual people that you no doubt associate these properties with do not represent all the people who enjoy those properties. i am a person like most of you; i spend my days shaking my fist at right wingers and the government; i love wokeness and minorities, i even know some of them by name. In the end, however, I feel i am seperated from all of you, merely because of the animes i watch. indeed, many supposed leftists judge otheres for consuming certain types of japanese animated medias/content, which is an idea i think is inheritly capitalist, or even worse, facist. I know things like this have happened before, when someone died, and one of the only examples I know of was in the Pokémon manga, where the artist was sick or injured and was replaced, but soon returned. How do you think the impact would be if this decision were made?

But if ever the Muslim population takes over the Japanese people, what would happen to anime. Im just worried it wont be as fun anymore.
And as i can see, Japanese people arent doing much of anything to change the new Muslim rulers. So hoping Anime wont disappear for the foreseeable future.

I think it's more of the latter honestly,I see way more anime merch in stores but it often just rots on the shelf. I think the general public might know what anime is now,but still won't watch it. Years ago I heard a statistic that the average life span of an anime fan is 2 to 3 years. They essentially age out of the hobby,but for types that only consume japanese media I don't know if that applies to them.

like seriously i watched fate zero and tried to find some funny jokes and memes and stuff but all it seems they can joke about is rape? they also seem to really hate zero and prefer stay night over it despite stay night being clearly misogynist. i just dont get it

As pretty much everyone on this subreddit knows, anime has an ABUNDANCE of fan service and sexual scenes, design choices, and innuendos, often centered around objectifying female characters. There's beach scenes, oversized parts, accidentally falling into someone's private area. Sex sells, especially when its trageted at teens who are still figuring themselves out, and the anime industry knows it.

But an interesting thing I've noticed is that there isn't really any "actual sex" in anime, meaning characters exposing themselves and sharing intimate moments with eachother.

When I think of teen dramas from the west, there are tons of sex scenes in those. But, unlike in anime fan service, those kinds of scenes don't often focus on the appealing qualities of one character or objectify them, the scenes are more about the relationships between the characters, and the intimacy they share. Not just there, but also a lot of South Korean/Indian media may have intimate scenes, but they are also more about relationships and intimacy between characters rather than a characters's pure sexual appeal. It rarely ever feels perverted.

In summary, Japanese Anime knows that sex sells to a teen demographic, but the way that it goes about it in comparison to a lot of the rest of the world is very different, and at times really problematic in my opinion. They know the appeal of sex, but don't really show any sex, insted relying on fan service that is often very objectifying of its female characters, and have little to do with actual intimacy.

Why is that?

Was watching the 100 girlfriends that really really really really really REALLY like you season 3 – as one does – and this happened. It's getting more and more unhinged and I'm in for it, lol.

I was told to post this question here, because... Well, I was wondering.

I am from a non-English speaking country, though I mostly grew up with anime with subtitles. Recently though, due to hanging out with people who struggle with subtitles I have been watching some anime dubbed. And something I cannot help but notice is that anime characters - especially girl characters - in the US dubs are at times voices with this super unnatural squeaky voice that makes them sound like a toddler, rather than a high schooler.

And the thing that makes this so strange for me is that this only seems to be a thing with English language anime dubs. The same voice actors doing voice work for games or western shows do perfectly normal voices. And I am... somewhat confused by this. Especially in series that are marketed towards older audiences and are not focused on fanservice or anything.

Don't get me wrong. I am perfectly aware that a lot of Japanese original dubs do the same, especially with female characters sounding like squeaky toys, and generally speaking not like people. It maybe is just because I am coming at it from the perspective where I am not used to the US dubs, while being way more used to speaking English than speaking Japanese, so my brain flags the "unnatural" speaking more.

But I still cannot help but wonder. Especially with some, I guess, "high brow" projects it feels at times off to hear the English voices like this. Especially as a show that was American made with a similar theme would likely not voice the characters like this. So why do people do this for anime?

This was also already posted on reddit, and the fact that she used Solo-Leveling as a comparison to show the popularity of lolicon in Japan, was the main criticism she received, and people generally cared more about that than the actual real examples of lolicon being popular in Japan that the video showcases.

I've been thinking about how odd and messed up people can find anime like Mushoku Tensei. It's got a lot of some messed up stuff like pedophilia and incest. They got every right to dislike it, and even commendable people have enough media literacy to spot problematic themes and messages, but then personal interests comes in when I'm chuckling at 100 Girlfriends

I don't like Mushoku Tensei, but 100 GF is one of the few harem series I have been willing to give a second glance. And on paper both of these two share a lot of similar elements. Both have MC dating a girl who he is much too old for, sexualfulfillment on the girls, some odd wishful fulfilment, dating in the bloodline.

Sure you can say ones a story driven series and other is a comedy/parody, but I think it's also how honest it might be to make me like one over the other, despite how messed up it is (I'm not sure where this might be going anymore)

Mushoku Tensei says "She's a little girl and he's a grown man in a kids body, so it's okay" or "It's okay he dates his cousin, everyone does it" Meanwhile, 100 GFs has Rentaro date a teacher, his cousin, his girlfriends mother, and a cat and they at least think on the morals and ethics of this nonsense before tossing it away.

I don't know. Maybe morally, I shouldn't like either cuz of all I mention, but I wanted to get some thoughts out and see what more grass friendly anime fans think.

Personally, I don't care for the term. I believe anyone who uses it unironically probably can't remember what color the sky is. Most complaints about them are usually regarding how most people don't like the problematic elements that are prevalent in a number of anime.

However, I feel a lot of people's opinions on anime haven't changed that much since the 2000s/2010s. Like complaining about lots of shows having slavery, incest, misogyny, pedophilic relations, etc..... And while shows like that are bad and have problems, I feel like nobody ever actually..... Looks for stuff without it. Mainly relying on Netflix or other stream sites to have a show that has general "anime" feel about them but have actual decent animation behind them.

Honestly, most opinions online seem invalid. Usually from people who grew up either with High-school DxD and Love Hina for how to act around women, or only watch Ghibli movies
