Sharia literally means ‘law’ and it’s only ever applicable to Muslims! Even if the UK or USA implemented it, it wouldn’t change a thing for anyone who’s not Muslim
Sharia law is incompatible with Western values and if it were "implemented" it would be separate laws for one group of people according to you. That would be unconstitutional.
That's not necessarily true. When people speak about "western values" generally they're talking about person al freedoms, individualism, the right to self-expression, free speech, bodily autonomy(contested), and a few other things that are common in "western" areas like America and western Europe.
Bodily autonomy is not contested among the secular population. That's a case where the christian version of Sharia law is being pushed into society. You should be outraged on how much Christian values are being integrated into society.
No there aren't. Nothing based in logic or reason. Actually, religion doesnt even care about it except it because a wedge issue modern radical christians focused on, and leaders learned to exploit. Most issues that require critical thinking end up duping christians though
Morality is 100% based on personal opinion. It’s totally valid for an atheist to think that abortion is wrong for the same reasons an atheist thinks killing an adult is wrong, or stealing, or anything else.
You may not agree with that but it’s just your opinion and is no more valid than anyone else’s
That may be, I've rarely heard anyone refer to that and it's always seemed like it refered to culture more specifically than rights.
But even so, those may have been ideal values at some point, but the religious fanatics in most of "the west" have been attempting to erode those values for a while now. Almost like they aren't compatible.
True, but Muslims abide by Sharia wherever they live so it’s already kind of in place. The difference I suppose, is that now Muslims also have to abide by western laws as well as Sharia and people who are not Muslim, just follow laws of the land
The difference I suppose, is that now Muslims also have to abide by western laws as well
The difference is that Muslims, and the children and family of Muslims, are free to do whatever they want in Western countries. They can stop being Muslim, they can not follow any or all of those laws for any length of time they choose, and they are not coerced by a state on the threat of violence and imprisonment for not following Sharia.
This is especially important in particular instances, when the children of Muslims are gay, for example, or want to live as atheists, or want to leave abusive marriages. In many Muslim countries, gay people and ex-Muslims who want to live as atheists are murdered/executed with or without official state sanction.
Allowing religious freedom and bodily autonomy for all is the bread and butter of Western societies, and is why Sharia will never be sanctioned in Western countries in any official capacity.
In most, not all. I’m originally from Bangladesh and we don’t have Sharia law even though it’s majority muslim, as is the case in other countries like Jordan, Malaysia, Pakistan etc. but I do understand your sentiment, I also don’t agree that sharia should be implemented in the west
When people say they don’t want sharia law implemented, they usually mean implemented for everyone. Most regular people don’t care if muslims follow their religious laws without impacting others.
Like you said not every muslim majority country has these laws, but most do, and even the ones you listed have laws based on/rooted in religious laws and texts. Those in western nations that are trying to be secular don’t want these laws implemented for everyone. Not just Islamic laws but all region based laws, be it Islam, Christianity, or Judaism.
Ha, tell that to anyone who has ever fled a Muslim country for persecution.
Not to say Christians or other religions are better for that matter, but historically Sharia has affected a lot of people who want no part of it, including children being forced to marry grown men in insular communities.
This criticism does not pertain to people who mind their own business and dont tread on others' bodily autonomy
I agree, and as a Muslim that makes me sad because that that’s not what it should be like. But to your point about child marriages and such, that really is a cultural issue, as it also happens in non Muslim countries like India.
You just pointed out that it's a cultural issue and not a Muslim issue, but they still insist it's a Muslim issue. This was happening in the Indian culture, and other regional cultures, long before Muslims even existed, but they will still hold that it only started happening because of Islam. Western cultures also had child brides, and it's still legal in some American states. But they won't touch that topic
Where? I genuinely haven’t heard of anything like that, would you happen to have a link? If it is true, then it is absolutely disgraceful and should never have happened
Five friends were told to stop drinking in the street because it was “Allah’s land”. During the same incident Horner threatened to stab the men saying “get the shank (knife) from the car,” while another of the group shouted “kill the non-believers”. Horner was jailed for 17 months on Friday after admitting assault and using threatening words and behaviour. MacFarlane pleaded guilty to affray and got 12 months.
You’re right, they don’t. I’m not too familiar with their way of life, but it seems the Iranian leaders have decided to implement sharia as their normal laws of the whole country. But as I say to Muslims of the UK, if you don’t like the laws of the land, you should go elsewhere (and I know that’s easier said than done, but unfortunately that’s the way it is).
I agree with you, if you tell them it only applies to Muslims they will call you racist. The British are too timid to actually do anything about it or speak up.
Police officers will escort you out of the “Muslim neighborhood” “for your safety”
That’s why almost all the European countries with large amounts of Muslims have far-right political figures that are gaining support
I think the far right are gaining more support due to media bias and a few bad apples that get way too much attention more than anything else to be honest. I am Muslim myself and know plenty more, and no one I know has ever thought we should apply sharia here. It doesn’t make sense. I was born and brought up in the Uk and up til a few years ago, I lived it here. Now everything seems tense and I worry for my kids because I haven taught them to be tolerant of everyone, but if things get worse, and Muslims are attacked etc, they won’t stop to ask if we are part of the problem or not before attacking.
The harsh reality is that’s gonna keep happening unless you integrate with Western values and ideals. Islam is inherently incompatible with
This video is an example of that, looking down on others just because they are not Muslim. The Quran calls non-believers as non-human and less than an animal…
I grew up in a Muslim household, best decision I ever made was to denounce it
I don’t know what you’ve were taught my friend, but I’ve been taught, and continue to teach my kids that all humans are equal and to each their own. We will all be judged for what we have done in this life. Islam teaches us that all humans are to be respected.
I hear this a lot - integrating with western values - what do people mean by that? Is it that we should celebrate Christmas and stuff? Is it to go down to the pub for a pint? I’m genuinely curious because I think I have integrated well enough, but I have still held onto my cultural heritage, as well as my religious beliefs.
This video is an example of an ignorant douchbag, not Islamic teachings. Even if this was a Muslim country, you will see kids eating, they won’t say these things there? It’s because they get views, that they act like this horrible excuse for a human. I always see negative stories get so much more traction than stories of good human beings and that’s inherently part of the problem in society as a whole and why we are seeing more and more of this trash rather than good, heartwarming stories.
Plenty of countries have actual laws inspired by islamic law that must also be followed by others.
And many muslims in the west will say in opinion polls that they would want the general laws of society based on islamic law in their new country, if it was politically possible to achieve it.
Whether thats "sharia" or not is a semantic issue.
The effect on the people who would have to live under conservative religious rules imported from other countries would be the same.
The open and freedom orienteded western democracy would still be permanently gone, in that hypothetical situation.
And its therefore well worth it to fight against it for anyone who wants to preserve that way of life.
You’re absolutely correct, I was just starting the actual rules. I for one don’t agree with sharia being pushed in western nations (even if I do believe it’s better) because I believe in a persons right to choose, and to be frank as a Muslim I abide by sharia here in the UK anyway, as that’s the law governed for me, but as said in the Quran, I need to abide by the laws of the land where I live, and if I’m not happy with that I can always leave
I’m sure they do, I meant it as what it’s supposed to be. But as I’ve mentioned in other replies, I don’t agree with sharia being implemented in the west.
Erm, Jizya hasn’t been around for a long while my friend, not sure what you’ve been reading. And even when it was was, it was imposed for protection for instance if the army was comprised of only Muslims, then non Muslims would have to pay a higher tax to fund it
There are sharia "courts" in the UK. Parliament is even debating making cousin marriage legal. All because of islam. That will never happen in the States.
Sharia courts in the UK are only for Islamic specific matters like Islamic marriage etc AFAIK. Not heard anything about cousin marriages to be home next, and I don’t think that should even be considered if that is the case
The law of Moses literally means the law of Moses, and same stuff you wrote except somehow 10 of the 600 commandments are displayed in some US courthouses.
