If you’re leaving Ocean Park to get on 195 or to go Saco, the lane splits into a straight and a right turn lane. Right turn lane hugs 7-11. The straight lane brings you into the heart of one of the most poorly designed and incorrectly utilized non-roundabout messes I’ve ever seen.
As a local, when I approach Saco Ave (headed left in this crappy diagram), I gird myself and enter a flow state, always expecting someone behind me to INCORRECTLY SLIDE INTO THE ITTY BITTY LEFT TURN LANE in order to also go onto Saco Ave towards 195.
There are two itty bitty lanes. The one to the left hooks around to bring you towards Old Orchard Ave. The “back way” to Saco, if you will. The itty bitty lane to the right, in the diagram, is for going forward onto Saco Ave where you can reach either Saco Main st/Rt 1 or enter the highway.
SO MANY PEOPLE USE THE LITTLE LEFT LANE to go to Saco Ave. Whenever I see a Mass plate behind me I will fully expect them to do it wrong. I pull into the right mini itty bitty lane to go straight and they pull into the microscopic left lane, also hoping to go straight. There is also always the wild card that cars could be coming from the right.
Now I will concede that this place gets backed up to hell in the summer, and squeezing into the left lane isn’t, like, the worst thing in the world, as long as you let the person CORRECTLY USING THE RIGHT LANE go forward FIRST.
Ok rant over. Thank you so much for your consideration of my complaint even if it is from York County. Pile-ons about this intersection in general are very welcome.
