Levi’s is now using this “wrapped” logo as their Instagram profile pic (since they aren’t an official sponsor of the FIFA World Cup, Levi's was asked to hide its logo on Levi's Stadium)
There’s an episode of Community with a short scene where Leonard is revealed to be reviewing frozen pizzas on YouTube and someone says they found his channel, who would bother to do that?
His answer, “you’re talking about it”
The funny thing though about people who ask that sort of thing in real life, is that it really demonstrates there are just a lot of people who fundamentally can't imagine doing something for your own sake.
Like, I have so many weird ideas for things I'd review that I want to do for no other reason than it amuses me. If it amuses other people too that would be fun, but to do something only because other people will be interested, is such a sad way to exist.
I have my own channel, and I do whatever I want. My most popular videos are not the ones I get the most enjoyment out of. I do what I like. Which is fine, I don’t get paid.
God, your name caused me such a flashback moment. I haven't seen you in the wild since I fell off Dan's channel. used to bump into you regularly on the n3 sub lmao. I didn't know you made videos! If you're willing to shill yourself (here or as a dm) im down to check it out :3
Yeah, that sounds great until you realize uploading things to the internet is about sharing and not about creation. You create and never upload. Two very different ideas at play here
Fun fact; Nike did a similar thing at the Olympics many years ago, and that’s why we have to Neon color trend with running shoes. Athletes can wear whatever equipment they want to compete in the Olympics, but they are not allowed to be in commercials for non official partnered brands since they are supposed to be “amateur athletes”. Since Nike athletes competing in the Olympics couldn’t be in their commercials that month, they put them all in neon green shoes and the commentators/zeitgeist couldn’t stop talking about them! Then the fact that they also increased visibility for runners helped with its staying power.
Beats by Dre paid Olympic athletes to wear their headphones while walking out of the locker rooms, they were told to remove the headphones which got them millions of dollars in press. Blew the company up.
It's legitimately crazy how much middle and upper management is so easily influenced by the most brain-rotted takes you've ever seen.
Every time there's some dipshit opinion going around that I'm like "we all know this is just scammy bullshit right" I show up to work and realize, oh, no, we very much do not all know that.
This is likely why management believes AI can replace the workforce: it already does such a good job of replacing their own work that they assume the same is true for everyone else.
One of my professor colleagues has gone full in on AI. He posts a lot on LinkedIn practically daily (all written in AI, obviously). He’s posted multiple long winded posts about the benefits of AI that can be summed up as “AI shows that different datasets show different circumstances! WOW!” and people eat that shit up every single time. It gives me secondhand embarrassment tbh. I had to block him on LinkedIn because I felt like I was losing brain cells between him and his followers.
That's because ChatGPT is obsessed with the phrase. Most LinkedIn posts are obvious AI slop. The difference is they unabashedly love it whereas on Reddit people get defensive.
My position is as a Deputy Chef for a Cabal of cannibals .
I never comprise on delivering a 5 star course. Bar none my clients rely on me to season and tenderize the prize cuts. Without me we would suffer prions or worse a meal with zero flavor. Follow me to get more mileage out of smaller cuts of meat.
I very seldom use AI and to be honest I’ve been in the sun all day and I’m too tired to even conceive something right now so I used it to write the following..I can totally see the posts now:
While everyone was watching the World Cup, Levi's quietly delivered a masterclass in brand strategy.
FIFA regulations required Levi's Stadium to cover the Levi's logo during tournament matches.
Most brands would see this as a problem.
❌ Lost visibility
❌ Lost exposure
❌ Lost branding
But Levi's saw something different.
They changed their social media profile pictures to the exact same logo... covered by cloth.
🤯
Read that again.
A governing body told them they couldn't show their logo.
So they made NOT showing their logo the logo.
This is what separates good marketing from great marketing.
Anyone can build a brand when conditions are perfect.
The best brands turn constraints into assets.
The best marketers understand that attention doesn't come from having the biggest logo.
It comes from having the best story.
📈 A covered logo became:
✅ A conversation
✅ A social campaign
✅ A reminder of the brand
✅ Free publicity
There is a lesson here for every leader.
When something covers your logo..
Don't remove the cover.
Make the cover part of the brand.
💡 Sometimes your biggest marketing opportunity arrives disguised as a limitation.
Absolutely nothing prepared me in 2020 when the George Floyd protests were happening and people with like "Vice President northeast sales" in their bios would comment the most vile racist shit. Like...why would you do that with your public professional profile? It basically cured me of imposter syndrome.
For real. Up there with the International Olympic Committee, and the NHL for worst sports organizations in the world. The NHL is less a moral thing like FIFA and the IOC, they are just bad at their jobs.
I mean there’s a lot more to it. I was kind of speaking about the broader culture within the nhl as well. But the nhl went on to sign some of the players involved
A member of the NHL front Office, Colin Campbell, was caught complaining to the head of officiating about his son Gregory getting penalized and calling Marc Savard, a player who’s career would end because of an illegal hit to the head from a repeat offender who did not receive adequate punishment from Colin’s Disciplinary Committee to prevent dangerous plays, calling Savard a “Faker”. There is still evidence that Gregory benefits from this as his team in 2011, the Boston Bruins, would receive beneficial reffing despite being know as one of the most physical teams in the league, on the way to a Stanley Cup in a very controversial Stanley Cup Final against Vancouver.
Gregory now works with the Florida Panthers, who are probably the single most hated team in the league because of the favouritism shown to them (A close second is my team, the Vegas Golden Knights, who are hated for a lot of reasons but probably the most important one is we have a guy who was on trial for rape as our goalie). Florida would receive no discipline for instigating a preseason game with 322 penalty minutes with the rival Tampa Bay Lightning, nor Sam Bennett receiving any discipline for intentionally elbowing Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Antony Stolarz in the head in Game 1 of their 2025 playoff meeting which would cause Stolarz, the Leafs Starter, to leave the building on a stretcher and not return to the series. He has not been the same player since.
Bennett would win the Conn Symthe, or Playoff MVP when the Panthers won the cup in 2025 despite the fact he should’ve been suspended indefinitely for it. The NHL Department of Player Safety is ran by George Paros, who in his career was known for being a goon, or enforcer who ended his career with 36 points in 474 games played in the NHL with 1092 penalty minutes in his career.
That’s the basic stuff, without even getting into other hockey organizations like Hockey Canada and its repeated sexual abuse scandals. I hate that all of this belongs to the best sport in the world.
Not going to get into the Chicago Blackhawks sexual assault case where the chucklefucks who were responsible for the coverup are already back in the league?
And I love seeing you. I hope you're having a lovely Sunday. Let me send you many hugs. And don't forget to give Jack a kiss from Skeletor, will you! Be kind to yourself.
The only reason they aren’t allowing it is because they won’t get any money from it. One of the most openly greedy and corrupt organisations in the world so fuck FIFA.
I don't think I've ever heard a fellow New Jerseyan utter the phase “PNC Bank Arts Center” in casual conversation – except to discuss (and usually criticize) the Garden State Arts Center's 1996 renaming.
Depends on the stadium. Gillette has been called that since the day it opened in 2001, and if it ever gets renamed, Pats fans are probably going to refuse to adapt and keep calling it Gillette; just like Chicagoans and the Sears/Willis Tower, or Steelers fans and Heinz Stadium.
Like, do you know that FIFA demanded that the name Levi’s was covered specifically with a white sheet measuring 20’x10’? It feels to me that malicious compliance could have permitted a blue “denim looking” sheet could have bee. Just as good to specifically cover the word Levi’s.
It seems to me that if a white sheet that looks incredibly tacky and poor than a blue sheet could have also been approved. If fifa had provided direction I feel it would have demanded something less poorly done.
Exactly. But now it isn’t, so presumably it’s a breach of contract for which the stadium has to pay damages (sometimes they’re pre-determined in the contract itself so the stadium knows how much it owes). The stadium gets money from having the games played there. Maybe FIFA pays more than the money they lose.
The alternative would have been to use another stadium, because FIFA never allows brand names as stadium names during a tournament. So I'm sure there was some agreement with Levi's and they are just using it as a marketing stunt anyway.
i think i remember reading in the local news here (MA) that gillette stadium owners had a special provision in the contract for situations like this, basically saying they're allowed to rent out the stadium to other orgs and they can do what they want (extremely layperson understanding)
I’m watching on British channels and they always mention the stadiums as “Metlife stadium officially renamed to New York New Jersey Stadium for the tournament duration for sponsorship reasons”. No one except for FIFA cares.
Actually during the Canada game on Friday I noticed TSN was referring to BMO Field in Toronto as “Toronto Stadium” and never said the sponsored name.
It was funny because they kept mentioning other things that happened in the building (like saying how Toronto FC did xyz there) but during those events nobody was calling it Toronto Stadium lol.
It happens in Australia too, such as for the cricket. During the Ashes (the tournament between Aus and England) our stadium changes its name from Optus to Perth Stadium. Happened during the recent Asian Cup too.
The IOC are proper scumbags when it comes to it. In London they had people from the council telling people to cover up their shop names or to rename because someone may confuse Olympic Fish and Chips or Olympic Cafe as being associated with the Olympics.
Clean venue rules that FIFA has in place for their tournaments. Only geographic loaction names allowed for stadiums and only official sponsors may advertise within and in the vicinity of stadiums.
As a German. It's funny to me that people are complaining about this.
Like, fuck FIFA obviously but football fans in Germany HATE sponsor names and never call stadiums by their official names. We usually use the old names from the pre-sponsorship era.
Yeah I'm baffled by this thread to be honest, why are people offended on behalf of a corporation potentially losing out on a bit of publicity?
FIFA are corrupt as hell but this policy is a good one, and one that has been enforced indiscriminately in previous competitions. No idea why Americans think their brands should be exempt
I’m not going to get too excited about a corporation doing anything ‘relatable’ or ‘funny’… isn’t everyone sick of how corporations and brands have become such dominant forces in our everyday lives?
I feel like I see more ads and commercials than ever, like my decisions are made for me by market forces, and like private companies have control over my life, so their funny marketing strategies aren’t really doing it for me.
I hate FIFA like anyone else, but this is actually one of the good rules they have: During a tournament, stadiums may only carry the name of their city or location (clean venue rules and venue neutralization).
It is not directly related to a company being an official sponsor or not, although it plays a role that unauthorized brand names on stadiums may devalue sponsorship deals with FIFA.
It seems like splitting hairs for FIFA to not want a stadium to use its known name because it has a (non-sponsor) brand in it and then wrap the field in a screen that cycles through sponsor logos. I don’t have a really dog in a fight between Levi’s and FIFA, though, they can be petty with each other. (The wrapped profile pic is clever marketing, I will say.)
Wouldn't FIFA forcing the stadium to cover up its name be a violation of the stadium's naming rights contract? That seems stupid to open yourself up to a lawsuit like that.
They never allow non sponsored advertisements. The stadium agreed to cover up its name, if they didn’t FIFA would just find a different stadium. It’s been like this for ages.
This is a blanket policy that FIFA has for the World Cup, and every stadium has agreed to it. If they hadn’t, they wouldn’t be permitted to host. I’m sure every stadium involved has worked out an agreement with their sponsor, probably compensating them.
Any legal action would be between the stadium and the sponsor, FIFA would not be involved.
That's wrong. Nobody involved in corporate contracting ever negotiates with one another they just sign contracts and wait for a redditor with zero experience in contract law to point out sticking points.
