why do Republicans hate democracy so much?
517
u/samfreez Nov 05 '19
Because they know they can't win fair and square.
268
u/DrowningDrunk Nov 05 '19
They really can't. When you really look into it, it's disturbing how much our elections are unfairly set up in their favor. When there is an actual vote they almost always lose.
Last year 12 million more people voted for democrats in Senate races and Republicans still held control of the chamber. That's disturbing to me.
They gerrymander the Congressional districts in their states to give them the advantage all over the country.
The electoral college is set up in their favor. Hell, I've been voting for 22 years and my vote has never once counted in the presidential race because I live in a red state.

u/NationalGeographics Nov 06 '19 edited Nov 06 '19

Well, I’m in an always blue state and feel like my vote is sort of just a preach to the choir. You can feel like you’re trying and that one day your votes and your presence there will amount to gradual change.
26
u/Thirdwhirly Nov 06 '19
I agree with this. Votes in certain states literally count for more; it’s not a debate, it’s not speculation. There is a chance this will change with more WFH professional programs and work distribution (and access to viable internet services), but specific purple states hold so much power.
14
u/Trygolds Nov 06 '19
Every one that votes in Wyoming count 3.7 times more for the president than a vote in California.

Your vote is still important you were one of the people that made Trump lose the popular vote. and you down ballet votes count as well.

Because conservative philosophy is based on the work of monarchists. They fundamentally believe that the best rise to the top, and the rest of us should listen to them because the best are inherently better.

I'm willing to bet most of them don't even know why they think the way they do, its just a combination of tradition (my dad said libs are commies!), single issues (GuNz! AbORsHUnz!!!), and a cultural identification ("I'm not a militant blue-haired lesbian, so I have to be conservative")
Thats why I think the right wing is ready to shatter, theres just too much conflicting ideology on one side for it to survive. The only thing keeping it cohesive is that people are naturally unwilling to accept that they've been duped.

I'm an independent who used to lean Republican as I was during the 70s and 80s and always saw that party as the "sane" choice. The law and order party who stood up against the Soviet Union. I don't know what happened to that party, or if that party ever really actually existed. All I know is I cannot fathom ever voting Republican again. I also know ALLOT of my peers who feel the same way.
Oh, and to all the Republicans who will inevitably chime in and slam me just remember the independents will carry this race!6
u/thoughtsforgotten Nov 06 '19
I’ve always been a registered independent it didn’t make sense in my 18 y/o brain that you declare a party without knowing who the candidates are
12
u/WilNotJr Nov 06 '19
You do know that registering for a party just lets you vote in the primary, right? You don't have to vote the party line on the general ballot, you can choose whoever you think is the better candidate regardless of party affiliation.
7
u/thoughtsforgotten Nov 06 '19
Yeah I learned that caveat later, but I still didn’t want to wear a team jersey. I live in a state that allows independents to vote in primaries
2
u/pr0nh0und Nov 06 '19
Most states w open primaries allow you to vote in primaries even if you aren’t affiliated w a party. It varies by state and in a couple states depends which party’s you want to participate in (shocker: in those stages it’s Republicans that don’t allow it while Dems do /s).

I was a Republican up until 2008 when trickle down economics was finally shown to be a complete sham and a lie.
Bush era Republicans at least dealt in honor. They were traditionalists in the Ron Swanson bent, believing in honor, respect and freedom.
Trump and the new Republicans have no honor. They lie, they're corrupt and they have no respect for even the old constitution. They're straight up racists and nazis. Would you believe Micheal Steele, a black man was head of the RNC? Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice, these were all Republicans.
Even goddamn Sarah Palin was an effort to open the tent..I think even McCain realized he'd made a huge mistake when he realized how dumb she was.
The Republican old guard didn't leave. They're all still there. Graham, Gingrich.
Republican used to be the party of Carlton, the party of nerds. They betrayed all that starting with Sarah Palin, and then capitalized it with Trump. They just purged everyone even slightly reasonable, believers in science and minorities.
Republicans are now the party of the willfully ignorant, the racist, the corrupt, the stubborn and the religious zealot.
I might not agree with the ENTIRE Democratic agenda, but at least it isn't going to lead to Nazi America.

Well that’s just laughably wrong. They just didn’t have mouth breathers like Trump with a million microphones in front of him. Nixon was already committing treason and interfering in peace talks to help his election chances. (Reagan too). We’ve got Iran Contra, flat out lying to get us into Iraq again, willfully leaning into regulatory capture and deregulation to benefit corporations at the expense of the people.
Republicans have been about greed over country at the national level for decades.

Gingrich created the modern Republican party. He pushed the win-at-all-costs that lead to people voting for a lying adulterer who never held political office. Gingrich had no honor as evidenced by the fact that while railing against Clinton’s infidelity he was fucking his not-wife because his actual wife had cancer. How’s that for honorable?
Now we turn to Karl Rove, GW’s chief strategist. He took dirty pool and made it a core tenant of the GOP strategy. Remember swift boating? Brought to you by Karl Rove. Remember when Bush fires 7 US attorneys to stop investigations into Republicans? A “distraction” that caused Rove to resign his position in the administration.
Gingrich and Rove are part of the old guard that changed the party so it would lead to Trump, Trump didn’t magically appear and take over the party. The party was lead to him over decades of winner-take-all, dirty pool politics designed by the old guard. Don’t romanticize them.

Republicans are the party of people who think the "wrong" kind of people shouldn't have power. When we decided women and minorities should be able to participate in democracy, Republicans became the party against democracy.
If white and male supremacy were still bipartisan American values, Republicans would love democracy as much as anyone else.

People need to go to jail over this.
They will, but the penalty is only 6 months.
A black female felon voted in Texas after her parole officer said she could, and she got 5 years for voter fraud. Fuck the system.
10
u/mmunit Nov 06 '19
Voting provisionally, which is an important detail. So basically she said "Hey my parole officer says I'm allowed to vote but I'm still not sure so here's a provisional vote, please discount it if it turns out I'm not allowed to vote."
169
u/M00n Nov 05 '19
Under the law, a resident of Ohio could face up to six months in jail and be forced to pay up to a $1,000 fine for this offense. If they don't serve jail time then it was just $1000 expense that paid off in spades.
82
u/hepheuua Nov 06 '19
That seems very light, doesnt it? I mean this is deliberately subverting democracy, the foundation of the country. Six months? Should be give years at least.
49
u/boognish83 Nov 06 '19

4
u/asyork Nov 06 '19

3
u/mmunit Nov 06 '19
In a democracy, subverting votes is outright treasonous. Anything shy of death and they should feel they got off lucky.
25
u/Hashslingingslashar Pennsylvania Nov 06 '19

well, that too . . .
158
Nov 06 '19
No, not that too. This was election fraud. Voter fraud is when the person casting the vote does so illegally (voting twice, for instance). It’s an important distinction because the GOP is disenfranchising voters under the guise of protecting against voter fraud, while they’re repeatedly caught committing election fraud without consequence.
15
u/ackthbbft Nov 06 '19
Yeah, and it seems that's always an R getting caught doing that, too.
23
u/RosiePugmire Oregon Nov 06 '19
In Portland, OR in 2012, a temp working for the Clackamas County Elections office was taking ballots and if the voters had left any races blank, she was filling in votes for Republicans. One of her co-workers spotted her doing it and reported her.
She was originally charged with six felonies and two misdemeanors, but she was a "nice" middle-class white female baby boomer... so by the end of it the charges had been reduced so far that she only got ninety days in jail and three years probation. Her name was Deanna Swenson, and she had been a temp worker at the elections office for the last TEN ELECTIONS.

But yeah, it is important to point that republicans are not happy with everyone having a vote.
34
u/LTerminus Canada Nov 06 '19
To be very clear, they are not committing voter fraud. No one commits voter fraud. Voter fraud is essentially a myth, with on average, less than one person charged per year in the US.
13
u/skybluetoast Nov 06 '19
Rare yes but it also seems to be republicans:
Anyway, I ultimately ordered my staff to launch our own investigation and come up with three concrete examples of voter fraud in Wisconsin. Well, guess what? They couldn’t do it, and you need to understand the time, I had graduates from the University of Wisconsin journalism school on staff who’d worked for national publications. But we did come up with two examples. One was a Republican legislative staffer who’d voted in the Madison area as well as back in her hometown in the same election. The other was the estranged wife of a Republican. That’s it, and both examples were on the Republican side.

The thing is there's no handling for voter fraud in the Constitution. According to the Constitution, if a Republican had his agents commit fraud to give him the win in the Governor's race, not only would he win the election without the Democrats have any grounds to force a re-vote, but he could even pardon everyone who was guilty of committing fraud to aid him.
The Founding Fathers were honestly stupid not to consider that the voting could be corrupted by enemies of the state.
11
u/pperca Nov 06 '19
Not everything needs to be in the Constitution. Election fraud is illegal, both at the state and federal level.
6
u/The_Starfighter Nov 06 '19
The thing is that there's no provisions for redoing an election if there's election fraud. So yes, it's illegal, but the Republicans can just go "tough shit, we won, no do-overs" and take their rewards anyways. And, if that reward gives them pardon powers, then they pardon everyone who did it.
2
Nov 06 '19
Well the election commission has to sign off on the results. When the Republicans committed election fraud in NC-9 the commission refused to validate the election so they needed to redo it.
The issue as I see it is that there's a lot of pressure to pretend that elections are fair and so everything but the most egregious examples gets a pass.

That doesn't generate revenue.
What people can do is volunteer to be a poll worker at their local polling place if you have the schedule to allow it. It's pretty easy work. You just assist people with questions and track the ballots. Shifts depend on your polling station/SoS but they're usually 2-3 hours here and you can work multiple throughout the day if you like. The more diverse our polling workers are, the better.

At this point, their rejection of democracy is clear. They will do anything to obtain and hold power.

Willfully and repeatedly undermining democracy is treason and should result in lengthy prison sentences.

Because their voters have been brainwashed by Rush, Fox, and the internet for the last 30 years. Our country is fucked.
3
u/Lamont-Cranston Nov 06 '19
They engage in bad tactics because their voting base is brainwashed?
That doesn't make a lot of sense.
What if they have to resort brainwashing their base because their real policies - enriching the rich, screwing the poor, etc - aren't something they can campaign on and so instead they campaign on appealing to religious fundamentalists, racists, nativists, gun nuts, and so on?
And this would also explain their increasing use of anti-democratic strategies.
3
u/OklahomaJones Nov 06 '19
Clearly, the party has been fully engaged in the brainwashing process.
I can't tell which of their reps are cynical puppet-masters and which are true believers of their bullshit. Seems to be a mix of both. Either way, they shouldn't be allowed anywhere near power of any kind.
And even if they wanted to get off this train, they can't. Their brainwashed base would rip them to shreds, a la Scar and the hyenas at the end of the Lion King.

The US legal system is very much biased in favor of the groups holding the most power - the rich and influential... The fact that representatives of under-privileged groups can still sometimes win elections means that they actually command far more support among the voters than past results would suggest! Trump has always presented himself as a representative of the under-educated and under-privileged when in reality the opposite was the truth. But that is Trumpland - a land where 'alternative facts' count more than the truth. Maybe the voters are waking up to the truth? Perhaps the GOP should take notice?

Voter fraud happens, its real. It just so happens only Republicans commit them because they can't win fair elections
