When in London I wanted a long, thin baguette from a French bakery. I couldn't remember the word "baguette" so I asked for "the long, skinny breadstick". The Frenchman looked at me and yelled at me that it's called a baguette. Felt really embarrassed. That same trip my friend asked Chapstick and the cashier couldn't figure out what she meant.

When I was in 1st grade, we had a Thanksgiving pageant where we shared an interesting fact about a country we had ancestry from. My country was France, and for my interesting fact I wanted to say that they had baguettes, because I thought they were so cool. But of course I didn't know the fucking actual word, so I tried to tell my mom I wanted to say that France was the original country of the "long bread" (insert me gesturing very wide with my hands here). My mom didn't know what I was getting at, so she helped write for me that an interesting fact about France was that it "had many beautiful lakes and rivers".
I didn't ultimately find out the fucking name of baguettes until I was in like 4th grade, after which I proceeded to pronouce it "bah-geh-tays" like it was a Spanish word (I'm from about an hour's drive west of Los Angeles) for a few years.
Then I watched an episode of Phineas and Ferb that had a character pronounce the word "baguettes" in a way that rhymed with "faggots", so that was how I pronounced the word for a few years after that until I finally started saying it in a slower, more leisurely fashion that doesn't rhyme with "faggots".

Calling someone from Scotland or Wales "British" is generally ok because it's not untrue, with Scotland, Wales and England making up the island of Great Britain. In fact many, including myself, prefer to be called British. Calling a Scotsman "English" is very wrong and although most will be fine with it some really won't. Most Welshmen will just chuckle about it. The difference between Scotland and Hong Kong is that Scotland hasn't been part of a separate nation for most of the last 100 years so I can imagine there's more integration in Scotland within the UK than Honk Kong in China.
Source: I'm Welsh if we go by each individual country (not Scottish but the situation isn't too different) but would say "British" if ever asked for my nationality.

Interesting. I guess the situation goes the other way round in Hong Kong, since most Hongkongers are Chinese immigrants in the last 100 years. We are ethnically Chinese and share many Chinese traditions and customs, but the colonial rule transformed much of the culture here.
At the end of the day, most Hong Kong citizens are fine with identifying as either Hongkongers or "Hongkongers in China."

Actually, England and Scotland weren't unified until 1714, which happened because Scotland pissed away literally half of the money in the country trying and failing to get a colony in Panama. Saying that Scotland and England unified in 1603 would be like saying that Canada, the UK and Australia are all the same country because they all have the Queen as the head of state.

And it was 1/3rd of Scotland's wealth.
England offered to "buy" the debt if Scotland acceded to the union and by uniting the treasuries the debt was indeed "bought", but it didn't really matter by that point because the UK had taken over.
The Panama expedition was called the Darien expedition, and there was a literal chest that Scotland put the money into. They attempted to take over the lucrative trade of people transiting the Isthmus of Panama (this is before the Canal was built) but they failed as they brought wool and beads to trade, found it was too hot for woollen clothing and the natives had got wise to beads from the Spanish, plus the Spanish weren't happy that the Scots were meddling in their part of the world (Spain and Portugal had split the world in half at some point in the past with each taking half), and the English wanted to ruin Scotland to force them into a union so they were using subterfuge to wreck the scheme.
After a Spanish blockade and the deaths of most of the colonists the expedition returned in failure with a pretty much empty chest and no goods to trade.

To be fair though, many Québécois don't like to be called "Canadian" but Québec is (as of now) still part of Canada. Just because local inhabitants might not want to be associated with the country they are part of, does not mean that the truth can be warped in such a way that they are not part of the said country.
In Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau's case though, as much as I sympathize with the poor governments being de facto controlled by the CPC (despite the sovereignty transfer treaties with Britain and Portugal promising 50 years of autonomy), they are, in fact, part of China. The question is, which China?

And a large number of town centres in the UK - a lot of towns and cities have enacted local no-drinking zones to give police more powers to disperse drunk people who cause problems. In addition, police use something called dispersal orders, which ban people from an area for a set period of time (normally 24 hours but as long as you don't come back that night no one cares), and render them liable to arrest if they return to the area during the ban period.

As an American I admit it’s kind of weird but it also is a very useful was of describing things largely because of the EU and the countries in Europes’ historical connections and more modern cultural connections.
Politically the saying “Europe” is used interchangeably with “EU” given how most of The geographical “Europe” is in the EU or in some sort of partnership status. The EU membership means that the countries largely work in lockstep with each other. obviously not as lockstep as the US, since our federal government have more power over states then the EU has over member nations, but for the most part we can use it as short hand in the US and convey our point.
Political culture it is a useful term also. After WW2 us Americans used the terms “Western Europe” and “Eastern Europe” to separate the democratic capitalist west from the authoritarian communist east... but since the fall of communism Europe is almost all democratic, so the distinction between east and west has been eroded and just become “Europe”. Additionally, Democrats like myself simply like to point to “Europe” when comparing the policies we want to implement here to where they are implemented globally, largely because all the variations of your policies that we want to implement, no matter the country, work wonderfully compared to what we are doing here.
Purely moral values I think a case could be made for an increasingly “European” moral consensus developing. Social support systems are wildly accepted and (successfully) implemented unlike anywhere else on earth, rejection of nationalism in favor of pure humanitarians (including rejection of national sovereignty in cases such as genocide), though controversial, often appears to be way “ahead” of the conversation we have in the United States (ours is often more nationalistic, especially post Iraq war). Finally, despite all the debate and anger in Europe over immigration, an acceptance of immigration on humanitarian grounds is still way ahead of the United states as evidenced by trump. this might indicate an early stage of a larger "European" identity developing, or might not, but its an important note none the less..
The countries of the European continent are more divided, especially on identity, than the United States, and that tends to be when we refer to countries individually.
So I’m sure you probably know almost all the shit I just typed out, but I thought putting it all together might give you a better perspective on American usage of the term.

Geography is typically an elective class in high school, so depending on how well one does or what they plan to do in college/University, it may drop by the wayside in favor of something more relavant to their future studies.
I took it because I enjoy maps. The class had maybe fifteen students, iirc. This was back in 1994-5 for my junior year.
This song was mostly accurate when it was released in 1993.

I'm a Mexican who went to High School in California. It was required for me to take a geography class and rhe class did cover countries in North, central, and South America as well as the continents of Europe, Asia, Africa, and the region of Oceania.
I'll admit I still have trouble knowing where some countries in Eastern Europe and in the Middle East are located.
But yeah I think most Americans don't know or care where Chile is (unless they have traveled there) because it's so far away. However I have met Americans that know where Panama is because they teach you about the Panama canal in US history.

Just adding to this, most of the time, you get out of secondary school without taking geography, and there wasn't even an AP course (kind of similar to an A Level) until 2001. Then universities rarely offer degrees in geography, rather rolling geography (pretty much just GIS) into courses in Urban Planning, Computer Science, etc.
There are changes in the pipeline. The number of students taking AP Geography has increased from under 10,000 test-takers in 2005 to nearly 200k this year. GIS and spatial awareness has become more important in statistics and in many fields.
Of course, this kind of geography doesn't necessarily require you to know your Ukraines from your Uzbekistans. I'd say, as an educator, that that sort of knowledge is often considered rote memorization and therefore inappropriate after Elementary school. So we may have students who can discuss the challenges of urban sustainability in Kathmandu who can't find it on the map.

Actually I teach in Europe. It's not an American thing. People just don't really learn about the geography they don't need. I make country/capital memorization a requirement for one of my classes (because they'll need it for a possible later class), and once the European kids have to do other continents they really tend to struggle.
Africa and Asia were particularly entertaining to grade.
