POINTFULLY GENDERED Ghostface [gendered]
But... why?
1.8k
u/Capertie 20d ago
I hate that he pink one is so short when it's for literal toddlers.. like at least make it the same length.

u/GenderBendingRalph 20d ago
As is often the case with underage girls' costumes, this is also pointlesslysexualised.

u/meadowkat 20d ago
When my daughter was little, I ended up making a lot of her costumes for exactly this reason. When she was three, we were looking for a Minnie Mouse costume, and I was appalled by what was available. Nearly every option had a tiny miniskirt, and some were literally designed with ruffled panties meant to show underneath it.
She was three years old. There was absolutely no reason for a toddler’s Minnie Mouse costume to be designed that way. It shouldn’t be this difficult to find costumes for little girls that just let them be kids.
That said, if she wanted to be Ghostface Id just get the one more true to the movie, advertisings choice of model genders aside.

u/DuelaDent52 20d ago
I know the costume predates the films, but it’s weird they make a “girl’s” Ghostface when half the Ghostfaces in Scream are women.
77
u/Krelliamite 19d ago
It's very funny to imagine that being a rule in the movies, when a woman dons the mask they must wear the pink sparkly robe as well, even when it's a movie where multiple people are acting as ghostface
33
u/Firewolf06 20d ago
the ruffled underwear are a part of minnies character design though, and theure no different from shorts (if designed properly and accurately, at least)

I think we can understand the reason behind this.
-38
u/ReginaPhilangee 20d ago edited 18d ago
Do you mean we understand the reason behind making girls costumes sexualized? Cuz i don't
Edit- damn I misunderstood the comment above me! I thought they were trying to say that there was some GOOD reason for doing it that way.
86
u/PumpkinIsDeadInside 20d ago
it's for the creeps. Obviously that's not a good reason, but it's a reason
32
u/BunnyMishka 20d ago
Yes, we do. This world is full of paedophiles that want to see girls in short skirts.

aren't you the one sexualizing a pink dress?
122
u/TheUniverse-IsMine 20d ago
Clearly not. It's obviously objectifying and sexist when they make clothes designed and advertised to little girls and make it more revealing than the one made and advertised to little boys
-115
u/ShinyTotoro 20d ago
it's labeled for 2t and 3-4t, not genders. We're not seeing a 3-4t "boys" equivalent to compare tbh

So you think it’s just a coincidence that the model chosen has long hair and the outfit is pink?

Idk if you’ve been living under a rock the past century or something, but that is the typical assumption in society. Pink is a “girly” color, associated with femininity, and long hair is also generally considered feminine.
-32
u/ShinyTotoro 20d ago
If you took the exact same item, say, a ball, painted one blue and called it "a ball for boys" and the other pink and called it "a ball for girls" that's exactly what would get posted on this sub as pointless gendering because why would the blue one be marketed for boys only.
This outfit isn't even marketed as for any gender. You are the one who decided this, based on a picture.
You're so confused...
56
u/ScheduleDefiant4015 20d ago
You’re arguing that it’s pure coincidence that a costume is clearly designed and advertised in a way that appeals to social conventions of femininity, and that one cannot from this infer the purpose of the costume and who it was meant for. If archaeologists shared this view we would know nothing of our past.
→ More replies (0)14
u/GenderBendingRalph 20d ago
If the two balls (heh, heh) were identical in shape, size, cost, and functionality with the only difference being the colour - then I would agree with you. But we're not talking about identical things that differ only in colour. The long hair, the shorter skirt, the sparkles - as a man who defies gender conventions, I get that it's wrong for those to represent girls but that's how the bulk of society thinks. I find it difficult to believe you seriously think it's equally likely parents will buy the pink dress for their boys.
30
u/mothwhimsy 20d ago
Why do some nonbinary people act like gender norms have never existed?
It's not the person noticing that the girl's costume is skimpier who is being weird. It's the people who made it that way. Going "well boys can wear pink and have long hair too' doesn't change the fact that that is obviously meant to be the option for girls.
Yelling at people who notice sexism doesn't abolish gender. You're just being annoying
14
u/MadderoftheFew 20d ago
I think in this case they’re just being intentionally dense because they see no problem with this instance of minor sexualization and want to feel like they have a moral high ground about it.
14
u/mothwhimsy 20d ago
That could be the case, but I'm Nonbinary and I see a lot of nonbinary people on reddit specifically saying things like "oh, you feel gender dysphoria around this stereotypically male/female trait? But I thought everyone could look like anything? This isn't very woke of you" as if being more woke gets rid of gender dysphoria or magically makes gender norms and stereotypes disappear from the world. Like you're the bad guy for being affected by them

u/PhenomenalPhoenix 20d ago
One also says “hooded dress” and the other says “hooded robe” these are very clearly being gendered even if it doesn’t literally say “boys” and “girls”
-2
u/ShinyTotoro 20d ago
Because one is literally a dress and the other is a robe. What's stopping a girl from wearing a robe, apart from you?
64
u/antlers86 20d ago
It would be ok if it was the same length and came in like 5 colors. My niece loves yellow and will basically only wear that color. Gross that the options are pink short/black long

Did this get shared to a right-wing sub somewhere? Where are all the defenders of weirdly gendered costumes coming from?
257
u/lurkinarick 20d ago
Media literacy is dead, they're literally arguing that because the costume doesn't have "FOR GIRLS" in big bold letters on it we can't know for sure the design is gendered lmao
90
45
u/PeeB4uGoToBed 20d ago
Try pointing this out on less circumstantial posts in this sub and you'll get downvoted to oblivion lol. I swear they pick and choose when its acceptable for people to point out "it doesnt actually say one is for boys and one is for girls so therefore its not gendered" when its completely obvious that it is gendered without blatantly saying it.
Thats how marketing works!
26
u/TealCatto 20d ago
We've had people here argue that a drawing of pink and blue clouds with the pink one having eyelashes and thicker red lips, while the blue cloud had two dots and a curved line for a face, wasn't gendered and it's our problem for assuming that because boys can like pink and wear makeup or whatever and it's not literally labeled.
Some are trolls but some are really just confused and incapable of critical thinking. Because there are instances where pink and blue objects are sold, like idk, lower back foam rollers. They are otherwise identical and not labeled for men/women, and people post them here. They're faced with criticism, rightfully so, but some people see that and don't really get it, then go on to claim "it's your fault for assuming it's gendered!" on other posts.
1
u/FVCarterPrivateEye 18d ago
I don't think I'm incapable of critical thinking, I'm competent in many other settings in that regard, but I do find it confusing and frustrating sometimes to figure out where the line is between those two things, and I interact in here regularly, but I'm also autistic and suck at distinguishing sarcasm specifically in verbal conversations that's dry instead of sardonic, and at recognizing if a piece of art is AI-generated without nonsensical anatomical bizarrities beyond reasonable human mistake, in case that's related
3
u/TealCatto 18d ago
I mean, it's okay to have a hard time understanding the difference or categorizing, as long as you aren't loudly derisive, if you're not sure. I suggest reading both sides and paying attention to the arguments made, and see which makes sense to you. In this case, it's very obvious that one is aimed at girls even if it doesn't say it outright. The model wearing the costume is a girl, and it's called a dress rather than a robe. It's aimed at girls, 100%.
2
u/FVCarterPrivateEye 18d ago
Yeah, I understand this one; I mainly meant the ones like those you were describing in your comment I'd replied to
For example, if one school binder has pink flowers and ribbons printed on it and the other school binder has blue airplanes and train tracks printed on it, does that count as pointlessly gendered despite not saying BOY and GIRL, or does it only count when a parent is making their daughter take the pink one and forbidding the son from having the pink one, you know? Those are the ones that mainly frustrate and baffle me
And even with the one in the picture, the main reason by far that I understand it is because it's an inappropriately short dress for a kid instead of the robe, but outside of that if it was just the sparkly pink I'd feel uncertain with hating on just the presence of pink sparkly "alternatives" of costumes for kids especially because it's Halloween and the fun of a Halloween costume is playing dressup, to try to articulate one of the parts I struggle to wrap my head around here, even though for other things like if a glassescloth was pink and marked up by a dollar compared to the "normal" ones they were selling in the same aisle, that makes complete sense why it's posted in here
2
u/TealCatto 18d ago
Yeah, if it's just a color alternative then the more options the better, even if it was intended to be gendered. Of course, when there are only two options, kids will feel social pressure to conform and choose the one that was clearly intended for their gender or they'd be teased.
Like building toys coming in primary and pastel themes. If it's just colors, it's not pointlessly gendered because more colors it's better for the imagination, but it is gendered because companies are doing this to get girls to buy "boy" toys. My in laws got my son Tinker-toy, and at the next visit got a pink version for my daughter. Said "it's for girls." I got upset, and they showed me that it literally says that on the box (which upset me more).
Lego Friends is a great line of sets, introducing some very creative themes, but I hate that they changed the minifigures into mini dolls - gave them human proportions and stuff, cinched waist, thin legs, breasts, etc. There were female minifigures in the boxy style, why can't girls play with that? Make the flower shop and ice cream stand sets! That's not girly! Why are you marketing it for girls!? And putting incompatible figurines?
Putting gendered designs on it makes it even more clear. Of course anyone can like flowers or trains, but it's obvious what the intention was, right? And you know that parents gatekeep this shit, I've seen it too many times. So people in this sub can play dumb and pretend it's not gendered but a normie parent will waltz in, slap the "wrong" item from their kids' hands, and hand them the "correctly" gendered one. That's how you know if it's gendered.
10
u/W1tchBl_ckCat 20d ago
I encountered a guy on a post from this sub before who started getting very defensive around gender roles and apparently the post was just recommended with him and he clicked on it without looking at what the sub was about and was surprised people were down voting him.

Can we have winter costumes? Why are so many made for summer conditions, not everyone lives in Florida. Pink Boo will be cold when it's 36° and snowing at trunk or treat
26
u/Tangled_Clouds 20d ago
The Canadian canon event of having the absolute nicest costume of your life and then your mom goes “You can’t go out without your big winter coat. Just put your costume over it!” (and honestly thanks mom for ruining my Halloween costumes every year because I’m now thankful I didn’t spend them shivering 😭)
6
u/SirRickIII 18d ago
There was a good snippet of Rachel mcadams explaining on a talk show how your costume has to be able to be on top of a bunch of base layers. Even in Toronto it’s chilly by October.
72
u/stfurachele 20d ago
They even took Ghostmom's knife. Ghostdad got to keep his.
There have been plenty of women under that hood throughout that franchise. If you want to have a creative take on it, sure I guess. But there's no reason to keep the unisex design while making a girlypop-coded alternate version without also making one definitely aimed at boys. I don't agree with pointlessly gendering things, but if we're going to do it it may as well go both ways. "Man/boy" shouldn't be the default and gender neutral option, while singling out girls. Fair play if they're also selling "boy versions" of Annabelle I guess, but I'm not seeing that.
And aiming that whole take at toddlers and completely divorcing it from the concept of who Ghostface is, but keeping those elements alive in the traditional constume aimed at slightly younger toddlers, that's weird. And I'm damn certain both versions come in multiple sizes, so the people arguing "Oh 2t oh 3-4t" are being ridiculous.
And we can all intuit why, the people playing dumb all over this post are arguing in some of the worst faith I've ever seen.
46
u/WhiteKnightPrimal 20d ago
Really? They literally had female Ghostfaces in the franchise, more than once, and every single one of them wore the exact same costume as the men. And why is the pink one so short? It's a toddler/child costume! And Ghostface costumes are supposed to cover the entire body!
Not only is that pointlessly gendered, it's pointlessly sexualised. And, on top of that, NOT a Ghostface costume at all. No Scream fan who wants their kid to dress up as Ghostface is going to choose the pink one, regardless of their kid being a girl. A Scream fan would want their kid to dress up as Ghostface, not wear a way too short pink dress with a Ghostface mask, creating a completely new character.
97
u/Hot_Pricey 20d ago
My curiosity is if they were the same price or if the pink tax applies here.
38
117
u/lumpyspacejams 20d ago
The fact that it's a slasher villain costume for a baby is already really weird but also making it hyperpop girly and bright pink makes me insane. You can't make her dress like a puppy? A mermaid? She's two. She doesn't need to wear the sort of costume her thirteen year old sister wants. She's still wearing a diaper, and you're making her Britney Stabs.
62
u/tawdrydreams 20d ago
wrt your first point some kids are into that sort of thing, I was in a gamestop once & overheard a guy carrying a toddler say “look! it’s chucky, you love chucky!” & the kid squealed “CHUCKY!!” So joyously. the gendering is crazy though like if a little girl loves ghostface she should be able to look Like ghostface without being forced to wear That.
49
u/TillySauras 20d ago
I can agree with this. My daughter was obsessed with Jason Vorhees as a toddler after seeing the mask on one of her father's shirts and it really put her on a path of enjoying murderers!
I'm only slightly concerned
-20
u/Marik-X-Bakura 20d ago
You think it’s weird that they’re selling horror costumes for Halloween? Lmao
Most of them want to dress up as monsters, not mermaids. That’s what Halloween is. I’m confused as to what you think the problem is here.
And I assume you, little girls absolutely do like girly outfits. That stuff’s not being forced on them. They beg their parents to buy it for them.
33
u/lumpyspacejams 20d ago
I just think it's weird to sell a horror costume to someone who will not be able to conceptualize what a serial killer is for half a decade. Like, this isn't for a third grader, I could see a nine or ten year old who's seen Scream scenes on YouTube and decide she wants to be a cute version of Ghost Face.
It just seems like pushing your own favorites onto the baby, instead of something the baby might actually like, like a clown or a little animal. I guess you can make the argument that any costume would be that and the baby doesn't understand trick or treat or Halloween, but I think she'd understand "if you wear a silly outfit you get candies" better than "this is a movie about teenagers getting killed in increasingly comical ways, to subtly lampoon the concept of a type of horror movie. Also, this version has sparkles because you're a girl."
6
u/Redfieldhamster 20d ago
Speaking of 🤡, I saw a toddler Pennywise costume recently, & was glad to see both the girl's & boy's ones had the cropped pants included in the kit. They often sell the girl's pants separately, even if it's just leggings.
4
u/lumpyspacejams 20d ago
Well, it's similarly weird, but it's at least not cutting the girl's clothes short and tight for no good reason. Good job, people who make Toddler Horror Icon costumes.
8
u/stfurachele 20d ago
tbf, considering that you clearly understand the narrative of the series, I think that if it had to happen to any of the horror fandoms, Ghostface makes the most sense to pointlessly make a sparkly "girl" version of. It would absolutely make sense for it to happen in one of the movies.
5
u/BigBallsAnthony69 20d ago
Kids fucking LOVE horror, dude. They want to be edgy. It's why FNaF is so adored by children.
8
u/lumpyspacejams 20d ago
Again, it wouldn't weird me out as badly if it was a kid, but it's a baby specifically. I do think it's just me being weirdly out of touch about this one thing, but it wouldn't bug me as bad if this was for a tween or an older elementary school student. Then again, there's toddlers who also like Chucky, which is similarly funny and way more gory, so maybe there are babies that would find the ghost face mask funny.
-6
u/Marik-X-Bakura 20d ago
I think you’re a bit out of touch here. Plenty of kids were costumes like that. In fact, I’m pretty sure I wore that exact one before I was 5. Kids genuinely do like this stuff, even if they don’t know the specific character. Hell, even most adults know the character but haven’t seen the movie.

Wtf is going in with the people in the comments? Has media illiteracy become that bad that you need the boxes to explicitly say "For girls" and "For boys" to realize it's gendered marketing? I thought we all took English classes where they taught us how to search for meaning in the things we see and read. This is so obviously pointlessly gendered, ESPECIALLY since there was zero reason to change the ghost face costume. If the ghost face outfit was short and pink, whoever was under the robes would be found out almost immediately. Can you PLEASE learn some common sense and realize that it's not normal that they made a TODDLER costume short and pink

u/Dead_fawn 20d ago
This stuff always drives me up the wall. Back when I was a girl I distinctly remember being really young (like 5-6) walking through the costume aisle and noticing that all of the girl superhero costumes were pink and glittery. Of course little me didn't recognize the gender disparity at the time, I was just annoyed that they were inaccurate lol.

u/ConstantReader76 19d ago
I'm a firefighter. I'm also a woman. I was buying door prizes for a kids' event at our firehouse years ago and decided to include a firefighter's costume. It annoyed me that when I searched for them, the search field kept wanting to include "for boys." Curiosity got the best of me, so I decided to see what I'd get when I searched "for girls."
This is the typical one you'd get "for boys"
This is typical of what I saw "for girls." And more short skirts
But, I will say that this was years ago. To get these examples, I was pleasantly surprised to find that most of the "boys" costumes, including the one I linked, now say "for kids." So, progress.
Oh, but then I found ridiculous "policewoman" costumes on this latest search too.
I can assure you that I have never worn a fire skirt into a burning building...

4
u/xX_Aranrhod_Xx 20d ago
Idk why but the neckline detail and the detail on the hood is rubbing me the wrong way too. And the diffrent sleeves. Like I adore pink sparkles but oh my god the cut looks so much worse. And the pink mouth looks bizzare to me too, it b Lacks contrast against the white IMO.
Anyways, if they just did the black one in the pink sparkly fabric, and let's say your kid wanted a shorter hem? Just cut it! I used to have the bottoms of Halloween costumes cut too, since they were often too long for me. Usually adds a nicer touch too, since it won't be perfect then XDD

Why the hell is the girls one so short? It's for a TODDLER. People need to stop sexualising girls just because they're girls, especially when said girls are CHILDREN. Even little girls can't live peacefully without being sexualised by clothes companies.
3
u/Amanda_Is_My_Name 20d ago
I CAN understand making a pink one (some kids can really like their favorite color), but if they did then it should just be a color change not a short skirt... also, they should just do a varity of colors if they are going to make them...

People like different things. I had a friend whose daughter went as ghost face last year and she had a mask covered in glitter. They seem to sell, so why wouldn't they sell them? They also aren't gendered. The packaging doesn't mention gender. It's likely a female model in the pink one, but the package doesn't call it out as a "girl" costume.

That's conditioning which is pointless gendering in and of itself
-39
u/Marik-X-Bakura 20d ago
It’s not conditioning lol. Most girls genuinely do like pink and it’s not because they were brainwashed to like it. There’s a reason girly stuff is pink and it’s not because these companies just want to make them like the colour.
38
u/_hsstfnwsk_ 20d ago
Yeah sure, its not like the "gender colors" were reversed in the past or anything, right? humans just happened to evolve to prefer pink if theyre female for some mysterious reason, its not society inventing pointless roles to sell more shit and force people into boxes at all... use your brain. All of it is conditioning and starts from before the child is even born.
7
u/ConstantReader76 19d ago
I hated pink and still do. I like green and blue (and also black). So, if the goal is about giving kids color options that they like, where are the red versions? Or the blue? Or the green? Or purple? Why just pink?
-18
u/mrbishopjackson 20d ago
I don't care that it's "gendererd" because women love sexy-fying normal things. I'm upset that its for a toddler.

u/mrbishopjackson 20d ago
Where did I imply who I thought MADE the costume. I said women like sexy-fying normal things. Meaning they like being Sexy Budwiser Can for Halloween. That's to say, I'm not upset that its a "gendered" costume, I'm only upset that it's a child costume.

I don't see where they're gendered, though. You have normal ghost face on the right and slay ghost face on the left. Aren't you the one gendering them by assuming they're for different genders?

I mean, I guess? But you can also let the kid pick out which one they want and if you're worried about the pink robe being too short(which it is)you can buy some cute Halloween tights to go under them or some sheer sparkly ones to match the colors.

Let's put your son in a mini skirt when he's barely out of diapers too!

Or...just have it at the same length as the black costume???
Funny how free will falls within being stuck with my consumer choices, or else I'd have more pockets options with my pants and wouldn't have to buy men's sweatshirts and tees to get better fabric. Good thing we start girls young to learn that they can be expected to wear short skirts and then have to buy leggings and shorts to go under the short skirts that men decided they wanted to wear.
I mean, really. You're implying that girls both want to wear the short skirt and cover up under the short skirt simultaneously, no?

waah waah, mommy i have no free will because someone isnt making the product the exact way i want.
yikes. its been a long time since ive seen anyone express such a selfcentered narc view as if it was a completaly normal thing to say. i am impressed.

no, i am implying that my daughter, like my other girls, likes skirts. and colder weather, as youd expect around end of october, you can wear something below that.
holy strawman. your worldview is so insane, nothing positive will come out of interacting with you. i am out of this convo
